CELEBRATIONS!

Valentine & Cupid recently turned one and in
honour of the big event ( what could be more
eventful than your very first birthday?)
invitations went out for a super, duper
exciting birthday bash for two of Doggie
Rescue’s most popular boys!

The invitations went out. We were all
counting down the days to Saturday 15th
February, 2020. The birthday cakes were
donated—thank you to WOOF GATEAUX
and the scene was set for plenty of
doggies kisses and wagging tails.

Their admirers came from far and wide to
wish them well and give them treats. As the
excitement built the cakes were brought
out—they looked amazing. Two cakes with
even their names on a bone on the top of
each. The tongues came out, yum! Yum!
Besides treats, walks and cuddles everyone
was asking “ What else can we give?” “What
would these two special boys like?” So we
asked Jen to ask the boys themselves.

INTERVIEW WITH CUPID

Happy Birthday Sweet Boy! Did you enjoy
your cake? It was delicious! At first I wasn't
sure but when I found the treat on top I knew I
was onto a good thing!

What’s your birthday wish? I'm looking for a
calm home, I want someone who will take their
time with me. I'm the quieter of the two of us
and I'd like my family to take me under their
wing and show me the world. New things make
me a little nervous because I've never known
anything outside the shelter environment since
I was a few weeks old but if I trust you and we
build a bond I will follow you anywhere!

What’s your birthday wish? I want a family that will take me on
adventures! I want to be part of your family, wanna go to a cafe?
Lets go! Wanna go bush walking? Lets go! But slowly cause I'm
not such a fan of rushing these things I like to stop and smell
every flower along the way. You have to enjoy the little things in
life! Oh, and I'd like my own chair, anyone who has ever seen me
at the shelter or at an event knows I LOVE to sit in chairs!

Stephanie Peacock: If we had a garden I would
take him in a heartbeat!

very soon both of these sweet boys find their

Why Volunteering for
CUSTOMER SERVICE

is so much fun!

The ‘Customer Service Volunteer’ is an important role at Doggie
Rescue as they are the first people visitors see, and the first to
explain how DoggieRescue works. For the many visitors, especially
since any one of them could be a future furever home for our many
doggies, your smiling face and helpful advice is vitally important.

Many people have queries about adoption and fostering, so we have
an important role to explain how the process works, and why its so
successful. It’s a great opportunity to help people learn about the In between we help people register and

What makes a great customer service
volunteer? Our volunteers should have
some customer service experience, a bit
of computer experience, have patience
plus a huge passion for helping doggies
(and kitties and bunnies and guinea pigs),
and enjoy chatting with people. Volunteers
must be over 18, and would need a car to
be able to get the shelter as it's difficult to
access by public transport. We make sure
you are buddied up with an experienced
volunteer for your first few shifts so you
get good support and training.

SHY/FEARFUL DOGS DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES

TO CARE FOR A FEARFUL DOG?
Comments by : Luis De Florio
DR Kennel Manager
https://youtu.be/ksAM6V4Noso 1.
Some dogs who come from the
pound can be shy or even timid
due to the lack of early socialization
to different people, animals, places
and things during their important
puppyhood stage.

In a kennel environment with other
strange dogs, unfamiliar smells and
unknown people, their shyness is
compounded into STRESS which can
turn to FEAR. Many overcome this
within a few days, some never
overcome it. The saddest cases are
dogs who are shy or fearful through
emotional trauma, physical abuse
( sometimes unknowingly by children
who have been left unsupervised with
a young puppy ) or because of no
social interaction at all. These are
dogs who have been left alone, some-
times for long periods of time, without
any human or canine companionship.

The dogs in this group are at times so
fearful that they can be aggressive,
head shy or even in the worst cases,
fear biters. It is for these dogs
especially that a loving, secure home
is absolutely vital.

Unfortunately it’s the dogs 1. Daisy: Wolfhound x 3yrs 24.8kgs Female

Tabitha is a great dog to do Luis & Tabitha love
doggie training with! She loves their one-on-one
to learn new things and in true time together
working dog breed style she
thrives on goal-directed
attention. Tabby requires some
special handling as it takes time
to gain her trust. She needs to
be able to rely on her human
handlers to take control of
situations confidently to help her
gain confidence when meeting
new people and around stressful
situations. For this reason,
Tabby particularly values a
human that she can trust to do
this and she will reward you with

5. Dusty Kelpie x Corgi 11yrs 18kgs Male

Dusty has a complicated psychology but part of that
may be due to his intelligence. He chases his tail when
he gets worked up, which is often, because he has any
number of sounds he doesn't like. He has strong
opinions in general and can be assertive in getting his
own way so he swings between being reactive without
meaning to be and acting very deliberately.

Luckily he loves his food and will go to great lengths
for it. You can train him until he's full and he'll maintain
maximum enthusiasm. When training or out on walks
he's quite calm and collected and not bothered by
distractions. While Dusty is not a friendly dog per se,
(you don't want to get between him and food), he has
a good nature leaning towards cheeky with ways and
means of scamming you out of treats. He's the Kelpie
brains crossed with the temperament of a particularly
wilful strain of Corgi. It's been very interesting and
rewarding to know him. 5.

These dogs need a person with experience building relationships with dogs like this. The person needs
to have in depth understanding of what the dog requires & previous experience rehabilitating traumatised
dogs. The challenges are there but with time, patience and love ( like Zack below ) the rewards are many!

Recently Mitch Finn put this remark on Google about
Monika’s DoggieRescue…

“ I adopted my best friend, Zack from Monika. Given Zack's
specific needs, I had to meet him a number of times and answer
lots of questions. But what surprised me the most was that rather
then a focus on finding a dog for a person, the focus was on
finding the right person for that dog. Adopting a dog is not an
impetuous decision, and the thorough process ensures
placement stability post adoption. Great work everyone!” Mitch

Zack, a long term boy, wanted a person who was willing to work
with his special needs and Mitch fitted the criteria perfectly. A
couple of months after his adoption this once scared boy with
trust issues now loves wrestling and playing fetch. He especially
loves licking Mitch’s ear when he is asleep. Zack is a lucky boy

Hi Monika & everyone who loved me at DoggieRescue, I celebrated my 6th birthday last week by going to the beach
for the first time and I absolutely LOVED it ! I had a blast frolicking in the water and playing with all the other dogs,
and then resting in the sand. I want you to know I have some doggie friends now, love my walks in our quiet, friendly
neighbourhood and Mum says I am even quite the guard dog! I also enjoy going for drives and getting out and about.
Thank you so caring me for all those years until I found my forever family. They just adore me! Love & licks, Ember

Benji with his big brother Indy
A DELIGHTFUL
LITTLE BOY CALLED

“ BENJI ”

By Claudia Bianchi

Seven years ago, my partner John and
I were broken hearted after losing our
Shih Tzu Tommy (who was my first
rescue puppy). His little adopted brother
Indy was not coping as he had never
been without his big brother and some-
how 3 weeks later we were at MDR
meeting Benji! Looking back, I think “ On a summer day, Indy and I walked into MDR to see how he
Tommy sent me Benji. would react with another dog. Part of me did think it was too
soon to adopt another puppy and part of me also knew that Indy
was not coping with being alone.” Claudia

The moment I met Benji he touched my heart and actually broke it
a little bit more than it already was as he seemed so scared. I will
forever remember his sad looking eyes. When Indy met Benji he
wiggled his tail for the first time since losing his big brother Tommy
and I knew right then that Benji would become our little boy.

Benji came home, and initially he was scared of everything, even his
own shadow! He was however curious and eager to learn and little
by little, with positive based conditioning and lots of love, he began
to trust us and enjoy life. Benji did also have a great teacher in Indy
who assisted in the day-to-day requirements like how to go outside to
pee! Benji had a big brother.

I remember so many firsts “ Benji will forever be my
and his uncanny reaction to delightful little boy and
events; like the first time we like a lot of adopted
were at the beach and a wave dogs, we didn’t just
broke near him, initially he rescue Benji, he also
would get startled and scared helped rescue us.”
then look for reassurance and
once I told him it was “OK” he
would break into his delightful
wiggle, and that wiggle has
never stopped.

Benji integrated into our
family which evolved into a
three-dog residence after
permanently adopting a
family Chihuahua x called
Trixie and life has been one
marvellous adventure with
what I call my “Rat Pack”.

Sadly, we lost our Indy last
year and once again we
opened our hearts and home
to another rescue and this
time Benji is the big brother!!

GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN — “LUNAR & MUFFIN”

Dear Monika,

We have said goodbye to two dogs from
DoggieRescue. Muffin ( the old Shih Tzu)
who we lost about 3 years ago and Lunar,
the black Terrier x, who went to Doggie
Heaven in February. We had her for about
8 years and she was a wonderful part of
our family. Definitely marched to her own
drummer, and a real escape artist ( only
slowed down recently when her hearing
and eyesight became impaired), but a real
character whose memory we will cherish.

Thank you for the wonderful work you
do and the dogs who you save to enrich
our lives and homes….

Kind regards,
Judy and Mick Lynch

AN INTERVIEW

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be : a
nurse or a clown. And I'd make a great
Therapy Dog, I love giving cuddles.

I thought I would : be hunting in the
Bush but I absolutely love swimming in
Pittwater.

When I heard I was to star in
Doggie Rescue magazine I: started
thinking about a career in commercials
so I can buy lots of toys to destroy.

It took a while but : I have pretty
much stopped my impulse to jump up on
people out of excitement. Except for
mum, she loves my hugs!

I was renamed Sachi because:
my humans used to have a boy dog
named Beau before me. Sachi means

Food that makes me drool
is : sausage rolls and corn chips.

My tail wags most when : I see all
my doggy friends in the dog parks.

MARCH 2020 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 33

My happiest moments are : tucking in
to sleep with mum and dad at night, and
when my humans pick up my blue lead to
go on long walks and adventures.

I often wonder : how I have such wild
dreams when I am so young

My nickname is : Sweet Girl.

My favourite place in the world is :
lounging in the cool grass in the garden,
listening to all the different bird sounds.

My greatest achievement is : learning
how to swim, it was nerve wracking but I
watched my friends at Bayview chase their
sticks and decided to give it a go. Fun!

You should adopt a rescue dog
because : They are not all the same, and
they appreciate being loved when they
realise what love and kindness really is

If I impersonated a famous star I’d be :
Margot Robbie.

Training my humans has been fun
because: They seem to now actually
know dog signals, and can tell when I am
tired, have to go outside and when I want
to play.

My favourite position on the
lounge is: either comfortably in the lap
of one of my 5 humans, or when it’s really
humid I like to be stretched out on my
side, extended like a giraffe.
