Margy’s nurturing as she lovingly licks her face,
ears and body and Winnie’s eyes gradually

Pam came from the pound under Duty of Care,
meaning she was not in a fit condition to remain
in a pound environment.

Pam was in pain from an injured, very infected
eye. She has now had specialist eye surgery
where the lower lid has been repaired and the
glands in the eye have been tucked in. It was an
intricate operation and Pam is currently on a
cocktail of eye creams, antibiotics and strong
pain management. Her lower eyelid had
adhered to bone.

Rescue $2,800.

A Foster Carer Co-ordinator is the first line of
contact between a foster carer and the Doggie
Rescue organisation… and I've had that role for
over 9 years now.

failed to count those carers who had fostered 3 or 4 times...plus,
in the first year, as fosters were adopted, I didn't keep them on
record. I was still learning. So, I think the actual count would be
closer to 170.

How could we manage without all these selfless
foster carers? It has dragged from my memory all
those little furry faces....Little Thriller, following a heart
operation, was fostered by a friend (suffering breast
cancer but with a strength that allowed her to work for
Doggie Rescue). Every time he had an appointment at
the shelter, he would shake and drool and refuse to leave
his foster mum. Then, one day, it all changed, he had
decided it was time to go and find his forever home.
Sadly, my friend died a few months later.... It was as if
Thriller knew he had to move on. How ? We'll never know.

Bundy Then there are the wonderful carers who choose to

Dear Monika & team,

Nearly four weeks ago, my family was blessed to adopt Roxy from your
shelter. Last Friday, we had Roxy put down at Elanora Vet. During the
time we had her, a mast cell tumour grew in her lower abdomen, from
undetectable at first, to the size of a rockmelon by Thursday last week.
On Thursday she was in terrible, heartbreaking pain, we got the test
results Friday morning, by then the tumour had started to turn her skin
black and she could no longer sit.

I'm writing this to let you know, because Roxy was the most special and
beautiful dog we had ever met, that while she was with us, she was
loved. Loved more than I had thought possible. She was so happy. She
loved our big backyard with lots of grass, she would prance around it
and loved rolling on her back. She would bury her bones and dig them
back up again. Bones were her favourite! She got a big bone nearly
every day, and for the time she ate it, she was in bliss.

Today I lay to rest my little man and best friend
of 8 years, Rocco (ex Bowie). Rocco and I came
into each others' lives in January 2007 at the
Ingleside shelter (I still remember the moment I
first saw him in the cage amongst a sea of other
little dogs - it was love at first sight), and he never
left my side for the remainder of our time
together. He was the most amazing little guy and
we shared so many adventures. Sadly, he
suffered rapid heart failure and went to sleep on
23 March after a short illness.

SQUIRTLE’S BACKGROUND: Squirtle came Doggie
Rescue as a puppy and he is now going on 4 years of
age. He grew up only knowing the dog shelter as his
home. When he was desexed our vet noticed that it
was hard to stop the bleeding post-surgery. After a
number of tests he was diagnosed with haemophilia.
His cleft palette is another indicator of his issue.

Squirtle’s blood was tested at Melbourne University
which confirmed that he had a genuine blood clotting
problem- he was Factor V111 deficient . This made
him a classic haemophiliac. Our vets say he can live
a normal life but it would always be handy to have
some fresh frozen plasma around as this contains a
lot of the factor V111 clotting chemical that he would
need. Our vets have this at hand if there is ever a
need. A minor bruise for him could be a substantial
problem and cause excessive bleeding. When this
is not happening he is the happiest of dogs.

Squirtle is a fun loving dog who plays with soft gentle
dogs. After spending almost his whole life at our
shelter, Squirtle found a foster home with a family
that help and volunteer with us. This is their story….

who are ‘not perfect.’ Did you know that at
DoggieRescue we have many doggies who
have disabilities - from being blind or deaf,
to not being able to get around so much
with arthritis. We even have doggies
looking for homes who have NO TEETH
because their last owner never had their
teeth checked out by a vet, there is nothing
worse than a having toothache so a doggie
needs to have his teeth cared for.

A DAY IN THE LIFE!

THE FIVE PART SERIES ABOUT WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS DO. By Ashley Blair

CUSTOMER SERVICE ROLE: Our customer service team consists of
hard working, passionate and outgoing volunteers who work at the
forefront of Doggie Rescue. It’s safe to say that there is never a dull
moment on the job here: our volunteers constantly meet new people
and (of course) are surrounded by our loveable and highly entertaining
demountable dogs (AKA ‘Monika’s tribe’ - Suzi & Mikey pictured). The
customer service volunteer role can be broken up into 4 general sections:

a registered charity, DoggieRescue has
seen over 11,600 dogs, 324 cats (and a
number of rabbits, ferrets & other
assorted animals) adopted by caring
families not only in Sydney but also
interstate and some now living overseas.

The number of volunteers has grown
from a handful to hundreds who donate
their time and resources to ensure
Monika’s dream can continue. And what
a dream it is! To reduce significantly, the
number of dogs destroyed in council
pounds across Sydney. This is done not
only through our adoption and fostering
processes, but through the vital help of
our group of dedicated volunteers.

PHONE DUTIES: On a daily basis, we receive countless
phone calls from customers with concerns ranging from the
adoption process all the way to happy customers telling us
how their furry family member is settling in their new home!
This job requires you to be switched on and ready to solve
some challenging situations and questions.

since doubled in size and are all suckling well.
So for the next few months both Poppy and her bonded sister Gwen
will be off the adoption list until Poppy’s bubs are weaned.

NSW alone. DoggieRescue is dedicated to saving these precious lives. Operating
as a charity for 19 years we have rescued over 11,000 dogs from council pounds.
DoggieRescue is dedicated to saving precious lives. These dogs receive immediate
medical care, are de-sexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped and await a loving family at our shelter,
“Doggie Wood” at Ingleside. We are a “no-kill” shelter. Our commitment to these dogs is for the rest of
their lives. Our running costs are considerable and increasing. We receive no government funding and
rely exclusively on donations. In this economic climate our need for support has never been greater….
