JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 5 Joey Walter Charlie After 5 years at DoggieRescue, I’m sure Hugo was asking: Who is this guy? What does he want? Can I trust him? MAY 2025 : long term DR resident Hugo finally found his happy ending with Gianni & Danielle Over the past year, Hugo has settled into his new life and routine and is enjoying retirement. He loves (and expects) his morning belly rub, three daily walks, and car outings. He knows his place, is protective of his mum and I, and walks on a loose lead (including at a recent local Dogs Day Out event). He still has an interest in cats and turkeys, isn’t reactive toward other dogs, and breaks into an uncontrollable butt wiggle when over-excited. Getting to this point hasn’t been a linear path. Hugo is sensitive and strong-willed. He needs boundaries and firm leadership, because if you give him a little, he likes to “ There are other long-term dogs like Hugo at DoggieRescue wai&ng to be adopted. If a similar approach is taken, these dogs can also find a forever home.” Giannitake a lot. There have been challenges and compromises, but through consistency, patience, and understanding, he’s developing into a far more balanced and confident dog. Watching him navigate the world has been a worthwhile journey in itself. Hugo still has his quirks, but that’s part of who he is. He is a beautiful boy who provides endless love andaffection. With a little extra time, patience, and attention, there are a few other long-termers who would no doubt offer that same depth of connection and companionship. Gianni In the December 2025 edi&on, I shared a li-le about adop&ng long-term DoggieRescue resident Hugo. Twelve months have passed since his adop&on, and I would like to share an update. HUGO HAS JUST CELEBRATED HIS 1ST ‘GOTCHA’ DAY

8 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE In our land of possessions it’s ‘out with the old’ and ‘in with the new’ and with Op– shops full to overflowing with thrown away goods you never know what bargain that you will find! The saddest thing though is that we treat our pets just the same. A pet is ‘not for life’ but ‘unfl we get sick of it’ or ‘unfl it’s health deteriorates from no vet treatment’ . Pounds fill to capacity with unwanted pets, dumped for many varied reasons and shelters shudder with the weight and the worry of just how many are able to be saved. Most are young, under 3 years of age, but there are also many ‘pre-loved’ elderly pets abandoned . Most of the older dogs come to us a)er years of shocking neglect and lives lived in pain through no vet treatment. Like Sally and her sister Be-y below and Pepe on p9. SALLY & BETTY’S STORY These sweet grannies, who we believe are sisters, had an owner who reportedly could not wait for them to die. He went camping and left them alone. They were terribly matted and had to be shaved at the pound. Both girls have poor vision and their hearing is not great, but they are the gentlest sweetest dogs. They have lived a life of neglect and are just so appreciative of some care and affection. They are easy to handle. How tragic for them to pass away without ever knowing the love and comfort that a kind family can bring. They deserve to be special to someone. 8 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE Maltese x Shih Tzu 12yrs 5kgs Females Sponsor: “ In loving memory of my sponsor dogs Buddy & Dezzy” Barbara The background of this photo has been Ai generated

10 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. EMBERS’ STORY OF ABUSE... Embers is just the sweetest dog and came from the pound terribly underweight and limping. She had burnt patches of fur, consistent with intentional injury. X rays revealed she has a crushed fracture of the ischiatic arch and the pelvis had been separated at the midline symphysis, and she also had a fracture of the right femoral head. She has been cage rested to heal the pelvic fracture for a couple of months at our vets and at the end of last year had bilateral femoral head excision with a specialist surgeon to repair to top of the femur. Embers has been such a good patient throughout these procedures, and she has won the hearts of the vet nursing staff. She is now having acupuncture, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to improve has mobility and muscle strength. This brave girl surely deserves the kindest and most loving of homes. 14 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE SCOTT CORBET JARRAH’S STORY Jarrah is a sweet boy who just craves love and is happy spending time with humans and it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. Jarrah is the dog who is most different onsite to offsite. Offsite he walks calmly on a lead, he wags his tail at all dogs and people, he is happy and sweet. He doesn’t get stressed with people or other dogs and is generally a happy obedient and sweet dog. Jarrah loves cuddles he loves snuggling and is alsohappy to sit quietly by your feet. He is sweet obedient calm and quiet and walks on loose lead. Jarrah is very stressed in the shelter and has been waing almost 5 years for a home Jarrah Kelpie x Staffy 5yrs 25.8kgs Male Sponsor Jarrah and help him t find a home Many of the younger dogs especially who arrive from pounds to DoggieRescue have not been socialized as puppies and have lived isolated lives in backyards without much dog or even human interacffion. When they are finally dumped into pounds, then a shelter ( if they are lucky )...these dogs are stressed beyond belief. With their carers they are affecffionate, friendly and loving but with strangers they showfear, some are even afraid of other dogs. Just such a dog was Hugo who was with DoggieRescue for some years but his new family showed commitment and paffience. They gave him ffime to adjust to them. Hugo has just had his 1st ‘Gotcha Day’ with Gianni & Danielle his forever family, and he is a very loved boy. See page 5 Hugo’s story shows how love and commitment can change these dogs lives.
JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 15 Blizzard COVER BOY MONTY’S STORY We don’t know Monty’s background only that he came into our care terrified of people. His brother ( last month’s cover Byron ) is just as scared. Monty is a very insecure dog who needs a very experienced rescuer to help him develop his confidence and he also needs another calm dog as his guide. In his foster home he gravitates to older quieter female dogs ( like our sweet loving Holly who is mother to all!) and usually snuggles up with them or on the foster carer's bed. Monty is wary of the human touch and it takes time to be able to pat him. He is very food motivated which would help greatly with his training. When he is out in the garden he hides in thick bushes for protection but will come when you call. However, he keeps his distance and walks behind you. At present Monty does not allow you to pick him up. Every single abandoned dog has it’s own story to tell. At DoggieRescue we all work hard to give each and every dog in our care a happy ending but it takes ffime to find the right family willing to commit. Some dogs are easy, but the broken dogs take longer and need a family who understands what each dog mentally has been through. A LITTLE PATIENCE, A DASH OF EMPATHY AND A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE CAN TURN THESE SECOND HAND DOGS... INTO FIRST CLASS PETS! JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE .COM E-MAGAZINE 175. 6. “ I very much hope Khaleesi finds her 'happy ever aer' soon as she has waited so long.” Janelle Hi Everyone, I'm happy to report that Khaleesi's recovery is going remarkably well. She sleeps a lot which is very good for her and she's very happy and bouncy and hungry when she wakes up. She seems very settled so far. I'm slowly increasing her exercise (although it's hard to stop her from running!) She thinks she's ready to go back to normal already. This setback is not going to stop her!! She has been such a good girl. Khaleesi and my husband Ed really like each other too. We are taking it slowly but the signs there are very good. We've started playing a game with her in the courtyard and she gets very excited ( fondly reminiscent of Dougie a long term DR doggie who I had fostered then adopted. Dougie has now passed on ) The look on her face is just beautifulIt’s going so well that I asked Monika if we could extend the foster time longer than the 3 weeks initially planned and we'll see how it goes. Khaleesi is an amazing, very brave little girl whois not going to let losing a leg stop her to living life to the fullest. Janelle Khaleesi with Janelle
18 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE P O S T C A R D We catch up with … “ HOMER ” the m agnificen t!Slowly Homer was able to life his head and eat morecomfortably. The exercise above helped his to regain his balance and gradually build strength in his limbs. Back in me...October 2020 Homer, a boxer x came into DoggieRescue’s care stumbling over on his front legs and after an MRI it was revealed that he had a arachnoid cyst with a diverticulum and syringomyelia. Leaving a dog in this condition means a very short life span and less and less ability to move. At that time Homer was only a young active dog some 12 months old. We wanted to give him a chance in life. We were quoted $6,000-$9,000 ( discounted) for the operation and final cost of surgery for Homer was $9,300. “ It was the biggest step DoggieRescue had taken in terms of surgery. Homer needed neurosurgery. Indeed I did not even know the veterinary neurosurgeons existed in Sydney!” Monika On 19th January 2021 Homer’s surgery arrived. After 3.5 hours the intricate surgery went well and he was over t he first hurdle but it was a long road ahead for his rehabilitation and recovery. Homer was discharged from the vets on a stretcher. Whilst he could eat and drink, and do normal bodily functions, Homer could not get up. In fact he could not even lift his head. It took his body some time to gain strength and mobility after such invasive surgery. During surgery he lost a lot of CSF ( spinal) fluid and this took some time for the body to produce. Thanks to DoggieRescue supporters we were able to raise the funds and Homers amazing recovery and hislove of life have seen all our prayers answered for this very special boy. HOMER WAS ADOPTED DECEMBER 2021 BY REBECCA & DARREN

14 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE My name is Scott Corbett, and I’m the creator of 4EverTails, a project dedicated to telling the stories of shelter dogs through photography and video. For the past year and a half I’ve been volunteering in Chicago shelters, working to capture dogs outside of their kennel environment so their real personalities—often goofy, loving, and full of life—can shine through and help them find the right home. Whenever I travel, I make a point to visit local rescues to learn about animal welfare in different communities. During my trip to Australia, I had the chance to visit Monika’s DoggieRescue, where I met several incredible dogs, including two huskies rescued from a hoarding situation called Denali and Autumn, and a beautiful American Staffy x called Basil. In Chicago, American Staffies often face unfair stereotypes, and it was striking to see how similar challenges exist across the world. My goal with 4EverTails is to help challenge those perceptions and show that these dogs are loyal, loving companions worthy of a second chance. I have included some photos of the dogs that I took. Vising Monika’s rescue and hearing her story was incredibly inspiring—it’s a reminder that while these challenges exist everywhere, so do the passionate people fighng every day to give dogs the futures they deserve. 30 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE By Antonette DiorioCAT ADOPTION OFFICER Antonette has her Certificate II in Animal Care and Certificate III in Captive Animals. FEATURE Article W H A T W A S T H A T Y O U S A I D ?Understanding Your Cat!Cats have developed an elaborate communication system with hundreds of vocalizations to tell humans what they want or need. And those of us that know our cats well will recognize some of these vocalizations: for example, we all know the meow that says, “get up and get me my breakfast!” If you watch what your cat is doing when he\/she meows, you may be able to distinguish which meows are associated with which requests (or protests). Some common meows can include: • Short meow: Standard greetings • Multiple meows: Excited greetings • Mid-pitch meow: Plea for something like food, or water • Drawn-out mrrroooow: A demand for something • Low pitch MRRRooooowww: A complaint, or displeasure or fight • Lower than mid pitch MEEOOOOOOwww: Begging, for something such as food. • High-pitch RRRROWW!: Anger, pain, or being fearful • Chatter (rapid teeth-chattering): Excitement, frustration • Chirrup (a cross between a meow and a purr with rising inflection): Friendly greeting sound, often used by a mother cat to call to her kittens • Purr: Invites close contact or attention Featured Kitty above: Mystery White\/Grey 8yrs 2.6kgs Female Sponsor: “ Sending you lots of love!” Nat & Penny I learnt another word today…. ‘homeless’ 30
JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 31 Cats are always learning how to communicate with the person\/s they have chosen to journey through life with and we can influence this. The more you communicatewith or talk to your cat, the faster he or she will learn. They say cats can learn about 25 to 35 words. Here are some hints on how to communicate and talk to your cat: • If you blink slowly when making eye contact with your cat, she will usually respond by blinking back(She’s saying she loves you too) or she’ll come over to you to be stroked. • Use a slightly raised tone of voice to indicate friendliness and a lowered tone of voice to indicate displeasure or assertion. • Develop a “command tone” to use with your cat when he or she is doing something that you consider to be wrong. Use a voice that comes naturally to you and can be replicated easily, but that is also distinct from your everyday talking voice. If you use this voice sparingly but seriously, your cat will learn to associate the voice with the idea that he or she is displeasing you and this will likely change your cat’s behaviour. Your cat wants to please you. • Make a quick and sharp hiss or spit sound as a “no” command. This is similar to the sound made by cats when they say “no.” • Repetition helps cats learn i.e. repeat the same word. For example, say sleep or bed, each time you go to bed. Eventually, your cat will begin to associate the repetitive word sound with your actions and may even get to the bedroom before you. Try this with other words e.g. toy, dinner, treat, walk (if you walk them on a lead). My cats know the word bath and when I realised they were running away when I said it, I stopped. Tsar particularly doesn’t like being bathed. Be consistent. A common blunder many cat owners make is to say “no” and pet the cat at the same time. This is very confusing to the cat. So for example, if you want your cat to go away, a firm “later” and gentlepush, without showing affection, will let the cat know that her presence is not desired at this time. Most cats will try two to three times to invade a person’s space, often from different directions (e.g. when you’re working on your computer). When saying “later”, be patient, it might take them a while to obey. It goes without saying that researchers have shown that cats don’t communicate with other cats the waythey do with us humans, but even though cats probably think us humans are a bit slow at understanding them, communication is possible if we are patient. 34 JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE This side of heaven is a special place called “ Rainbow Bridge” where all animals are restored to health and happiness... Vale “Milo” “ Somemes the dog you rescue… ends up rescuing you.” Mario Tribute to Milo - My Soul Dog By Mario Bassi DR Kennel Hand & Milo’s Dad Usually, I write about long-term dogs at the shelter who are still searching for their forever homes. This time, I would like to write about Milo - a Staffy Ridgeback cross rescue who found her forever home three times, with the rainbow bridge becoming her third and final home. Milo was first adopted over 12 years ago by my wife’s late friend. She was a strong-minded and powerful dog, highly reactive to dogs and cars, with an intense prey drive. At the time, I had always loved dogs and grown up around them, but I had little understanding of rescue dogs or dogs with special needs. When my wife’s friend became weaker through illness, I started helping by walking Milo. Initially, she growled at me and made it very clear that trust needed to be earned. But Milo was incredibly intelligent. She quickly realised that this new guy could provide two of her favourite things in life - long walks and endless tennis ball throws in the backyard. Over the next ten years, we built an extraordinary bond. With our backyards connected and the gate always open, Milo slowly gained a second forever home, especially after the passing of my wife’s friend seven years ago. During COVID, Milo became even more deeply connected to our lives. She started sleeping on the armchair opposite our bed. One cold winter night, I woke to find her staring at me. As soon as I moved, she climbed under the blanket and claimed her permanent place beside us. From that moment on, I became more of a guest in my own bed.
JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE 35 “ The pain is immense, but so is the gratude.” MILO 2012– 2026 Although Milo remained dog-reactive, she had one special friend: Arthur, the Labrador puppy next door. Arthur adored Milo so much that he repeatedly escaped his yard just to visit her. I worried at first that Milo might not accept him, but instead he seemed to awaken a maternal side in her. Despite eventually becoming almost twice her size, Arthur was always treated as her little boy. Milo changed the direction of my life. Through her, I discovered the world of rescue dogs and dogs with special needs, which led me to volunteer and work hands-on at Monika’s, alongside creating Mighty Paws Dog Walking with a focus on one-on-one care for dogs requiring extra understanding and patience.“ Before her departure, Milo also sent me on one final mission: Milo’s Mission. I believe she sll has more to teach me through that mission, and I hope to share more about it in the near future.” Just before Mother ‘s Day Milo crossed the rainbow bridge following a rapid decline caused by a suspected heart tumour. JUNE 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 37 Joey Walter Charlie Dear Monika, Nyx has started to settle in after 3 weeks. We went to the local vet after 4 days as she was not eating, drinking, peeing or pooing. They said it was anxiety. Those problems worked themselves out. She started sleeping in our bedroom in her bed after a week. We saw the Cottage Vet after 2 weeks and they said not to worry about the eating as she could do with losing another 2kg. Things are going much better than we thought they would. She runs away from Niki and I and then comes back to check on us except when it is time to put the harness on and go for a walk. She is very good on lead and has 3 long walks a day. She has made lots of human and doggy friends on her walks. We can leave her alone in the house for a few hours and she is no problem. She needs time to learn to like us. We know that she will be another delightful dog.
