2 JULY 2015 RESCUECATS E-MAGAZINE

Dear Friends,

This recently appeared in Southern Highland News...

WINGECARRIBEE Shire Council has formally adopted a
revised euthanasia policy for animals at its Moss Vale
shelter. Clr Larry Whipper said "I think it's important we
have this minimal euthanasia policy in place. What it does
is set the foundation for whoever operates the shelter, and
ensures compassionate care of our companion animals out
there." Clr Whipper noted that some of the public
submissions had been incorporated into the policy. "I'm
sure it will give a sense of security to a lot of animal-lovers
in the community," he said.

The council had first adopted a draft euthanasia policy in
September 2013, the policy now sets the conditions for the
minimal euthanasia and maximum rehoming of shelter
animals. It clarifies that shelter animals can be euthanised
only on recommendation by a veterinarian, and limits the
circumstances in which euthanasia may occur.
Respondents also said no animal should be euthanised
purely because the shelter lacked space.

AN ARMFUL OF PURRFECTION!!!! Way to go Wingecarribee! We wish that other facilities
Meet handsome Roger again on page 6 would take note. If one shelter can do it - so can others.

Dear Readers,

It is that time again. We are often asked "How can I help the kitties and RCP". The truth is that the
single thing that you can do to help the kitties is to follow us and to share us with those you know….

Have no shame, if you see a colleague at work with an iDevice, simply say, "Hey I bet you like
googling cute cat photos, did you know about RescueCat Project (RCP)"... It is a great conversation
icebreaker. Or, if you always wanted to say hi to your gorgeous co-worker and show your sharing
side, introduce yourself and offer to share a well kept secret ... the cutest kitties can be found on RCP...

DESEXING YOUR KITTY -

HELP FOR THOSE IN NEED!

Compiled by Deborah Rouse

There are many benefits for desexing your kitty – the major reason is to reduce the mass annual killing of cats in
pounds, shelters and at vets across Australia each year.

The most commonly referenced number is 250,000 for cats and dogs euthanized (unnecessarily killed) across
Australia each year.

Australia should be ashamed, as the UK rate is about a tenth of ours - 25,000, for a nation that has a population
ten times the size of ours! What is going on?

• It is an urban myth that a female cat should be allowed to have one litter.
• It is also an urban myth that a male cat’s testicles are somehow connected to its owner’s, although

psychologically should perhaps be recognised... but still treated ;)

Desexing is the most powerful step you can take to decrease the number of kitties killed each year, and
make an impact on the number that find themselves in pounds and shelters through no fault of their own.

Yes there is some discomfort for your kitty – and you will need to organise, deliver, pick up and keep an eye on
your recovering pet.

If you are not able to afford the costs, don’t put it off:

• shop around – the costs vary from vet to vet, some vets will offer discounts to regular clients,
those clients they know are in need, and also if you have rescued the animal (apologies to these
champion vets who are so kind in offering discounts, and who are making their $ contribution to
animal welfare – also you must be comfortable with any vet you choose who will responsibly look
after your furr-child)

• also contact the National Desexing Network, an Australian national organisation
http://www.ndn.org.au/
