FOR LOGAN & LEVI

FIV+ IS NO BARRIER!

By Deb Rouse

Do you know what the biggest myth is
about FIV?: that it is highly contagious...
not true if you have friendly cats, and then
the risk is low for blood to blood transfer .

Logan Another common myth for FIV Cats is that
they will often be ill, from www.fivcats.com
Levi is definitely the “the virus is extremely slow acting, and takes
braver one, and Logan many years before it has any noticeable effect,
the snuggle pot…. and in reality often never reaches that point,
FIV cats will not suffer any more illness than
Levi uninfected cats”.

Logan and his bonded sister Levi were rescued from a
pound together and both have FIV which is not
holding them back at all. They act like most cats
and just need a relatively quite family home to
help keep their immunity up. Logan and Levi should be
kept indoors and in an enclosed outside area to keep
them safe from other kitties and animals (they are
currently a bit scared of birds). We are happy to
discuss FIV and their needs but first let me tell you
about them...

MEET LEVI:

Are you looking for an inquisitive and social new
friend, who comes with a cuddly brother? Are you
prepared for cats that just like to "hang out" with you
for most of the day and sleep on your bed at night?

Levi is a very young black and white 1yo lady, brave
at heart and likes being with people and involved
with whatever they are doing including lounging
or pottering on the balcony, cleaning the house,
watching telly, or playing with cat toys!

Levi and her brother Logan are very bonded
and need a secure environment where they
can relax and let their personalities shine...

JUNE 2017 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE 5

They are both positive that FIV is no barrier to living a long and happy life!

Logan loves to chase toys
and balls and loves cuddle
time at least once
each evening.

MEET LOGAN:

Are you looking for a big cuddly sook, who will look to you for
guidance and comes with an intelligent and friendly sister? Are
you prepared for cats that just like to "hang out" with you for most
of the day and sleep on your bed at night?

Logan is a very young 1yo ginger and white "boy", very soft
natured and initially may hold back, until his brave sister leads the
way…He and Levi are bonded and he seeks guidance from Levi
and his two-legged leader (you) on what is safe to do. They like
being with people and involved with whatever they are doing
including lounging or pottering on the balcony, cleaning the house,
watching telly, or playing with cat toys! Logan and Levi love to
play with toys together, and are comfortable spending hours alone
but prefer the company of people.

We are still learning more about their personalities
from their devoted foster carer who says “ Levi is
extremely playful with a very loud purr. Levi and
Logan love to play with toys together, and are
comfortable spending hours alone but prefer the
company of people.”

So what else do they get up to? Turn the page….

Showing just how “normal” and caring they can be, Logan & Levi our FIV positive pair of kitties
are really enjoying a temporary carer, their "kind fearless leader" of their little tribe. So far they
have adjusted well in a normal home, and the photos show:

a) how to lounge around, especially together & with a remote
to the telly ( WHAT FUN )!

b) how sweet it is cuddling in someone’s arms. Logan snuggles
up to his ‘foster mum’.

These two will provide much
love to their new family for a
very long time.

the Cat Adoption Questionnaire and email it to

BECAUSE LOVE STORIES SHOULD

Do you have a big kind heart and willing to take on two softies that just want to be loved? Toby may be hearing

AS KITTENS rescued by RESCUE CAT PROJECT. At just
5 months old ( see photo at left ) they were
adopted together by a family who were so
excited to be giving them a loving home.
Sadly just a few months later they were found
in a country pound just by chance by a
volunteer from Doggie Rescue who was
rescuing a dog. They had been on death row
there for about 8 weeks and time was running
out. Why they were abandoned again we
have limited information, except perhaps due
to a marriage breakdown.

And so their second journey began
at DoggieRescue, that was in 2016.

“ We have two of the biggest softest boys seeking a new forever home. We
can vouch that they enjoy the company of people, are playful and then often
become big-lounge lizards. They both have big characters, Pinocchio is the
cool-alpha male, and Jiminy the sweet ever-so-slightly-younger-one, eager to
please and not be left out – they will definitely keep you entertained.”

Fast forward to 2017 and the boys are strongly bonded to one
another, on cool days they will curl up together, or when feeling
social, will curl up with lots of other kitties too. Jiminy sometimes
squeezes into a hammock with another DR kitty little Mary.

From their behaviour they have told us that they:

• like being with people, they would take over the office if we let them
• enjoy playtime, the red laser toy literally gets Pinocchio to do back flips!
• love a good meal, yep they are “big boys” but easy to please
• are happiest sleeping in a hammock or soft bedding (fleeces)
• can’t get enough fresh cardboard boxes (the best present for them)

Being such sweet natured cats they deserve another chance with a loving
family. Both show gratitude when they are patted and admired, and will happily
sit on your lap (yep each one does manage to squeeze on a person’s lap) while
you continue to pat and tell them how beautiful they are. Your lap is fine, they
don’t need a pedestal. They are both under 2 years of age, and starting to
mature, with siestas during the day becoming a prime activity. They also love
to watch the birds in the trees or the crawly things in the grass – we would love
them to have an enclosed outdoor space besides being part of your family with
a cosy bed at night.

Sponsors: Pinocchio: “ In loving memory of Joey & Rosie!” Pat Broderick &
Big Joey & Jiminy: “ Somewhere a loving home waits!” Lesley Cansdell & Titch

As much as we all at DoggieRescue love them, Pinocchio & Jiminy need, and
deserve a home of their very own. Can you give this story a happy ending?

• FEATURE A RABBIT HAS HIS SAY ABOUT BUNNY FACTS & FICTION...

Midnight's

Myth Busters!

With the help of Vivienne Chan

Good day, Midnight here to bust some of the most
common myths that are spread amongst the human kind
about us rabbits. In this issue's Midnight Myth Busters, I
would like to share some of my favourite myths around
the theme of our rabbit diet.

MYTH 1: Carrots make up the majority of
a rabbit's diet

REALITY: Despite the common depictions of
cartoon rabbits munching on a bunch of carrots,
this is far from the truth of what makes a
balanced rabbit diet. An adult rabbit diet should
consist of a minimum of 70% hay (e.g. pasture
hay, oaten hay, meadow hay), 20% fresh leafy
vegetables (eg. kale, celery leaves, spinach leaves,

bok choy) and 10% fruit and other treats (e.g. banana,
strawberries, carrots ). Pellets can also be offered in small
qualities but not recommended daily due to the high salt
content. Rabbits should always have access to clean drinking
water - a water dish or drink bottle both do the job well.

Did somebody MYTH 2: Only pet store bought treats are
says treats? good for rabbits

REALITY: Majority of the treats available at pet stores are highly
processed, contain food colouring and are designed to be visually
appealing to the consumer purchasing them. There are a lot of
alternatives to pet store bought treats that you may find at your local
grocer such as sultanas, unprocessed oats, dried papaya and dried
pineapple. All treats should be given in small quantities and do not
have additives, sweeteners or added sugar to them. Fresh fruit and
herbs are also considered a treat to rabbits, this may include
blueberries, apple, mint, parsley and coriander.

JUNE 2017 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE 19

MYTH 3: Rabbits eat only ‘till
they are full

REALITY: Rabbits love to eat and obesity is one of the Nugget & Piper munching and crunching
most common issues with domesticated rabbits. If a rabbit on veggies and fruit. When asked Nugget
eats an unlimited amount of pellets or treats, they may exclaimed “ We just love eating!”
develop bladder stones, kidney stones, diarrhoea or in
serious cases, gastrointestinal stasis (gut stasis or GI stasis). MYTH 4: Rabbits only need to
GI stasis can be a fatal condition for rabbits where their be fed once every 24 hours

digestive system slows
down or completely
stops, this is often
prevented
through a healthy
balanced diet
and daily exercise.

REALITY: Rabbits are constant grazers
and will not eat a "provided meal" in one
go unlike cats or dogs. Rabbits should
have access to unlimited hay (a rabbit
cannot have too much hay) and be given
fresh greens twice a day, usually in the
morning and evening. It is not okay to
leave a rabbit with a larger amount of food
and go away for a weekend unlike cats,
this is because if a rabbit stops eating or
pooping for more than a 12 hour period,
this signals a medical emergency and
requires veterinary treatment.

Hope you've found these myths interesting and I look forward to busting myths on rabbit care next month. If you have
a myth you'd like me to bust, please write to me at [email protected] "Attn: Midnight's Myth Busters".
