Easter hazards for
your cat

Easter is a joyful time for many of us as it brings together
friends and family and provides an opportunity to enjoy
special food and festivities. However, the very decorations
and edibles that gives Easter its special flavour can prove
very hazardous to our cat companions.

Below are some threats that all cat owners need to be aware Written by: Madeline Burton
of to ensure that everyone has a happy Easter, including
family, friends and our pets.

Easter lilies are deadly

Lilies are highly popular in Australia as gifts and in flower
arrangements. This means they appear in many homes where
cats are also present. What many people do not realise is that
a number of lily plants are highly toxic to cats and can lead to
kidney failure and death. This includes Asian, Day, Easter,
Glory, Japanese Show, Peace, Red, Rubrum, Stargazer, Tiger
and Wood lilies.

While the exact toxic substance that damages a cat’s kidneys
has not been identified, every part of a lily, including the flower,
is highly poisonous. So much so that even a very small amount
of a petal or leaf can lead to acute kidney failure. As many of
us know the pollen from an Easter lily is copious and very
sticky which means it can easily attach itself to a cat’s fur or
paws. The cat then swallows the pollen as it grooms itself. The
toxicity is such that cats can even be poisoned by drinking the
water from a vase in which the flowers have been kept. A cat’s
nervous and gastro-intestinal systems may also be affected.

Cats seem to be the only domestic pet who are vulnerable to
the toxin. Daffodils, Tulips & Hyacinths are also toxic to pets so
ensure that they are kept well away from cats.

If you suspect that your cat has eaten any part of the lily plant you must contact your
veterinarian immediately as it is a medical emergency. Given the extreme toxicity of these plants
and the devastating consequences, it is recommended that lilies are kept out of homes with cats.

gastro-intestinal system.

Ensure that any items like hats or baskets are kept well
away from cats. If you hold an Easter egg hunt, ensure
that cats and other pets do not have access to the area.
You should also check that all eggs have been found
before allowing your cat to return to the hunt area.

may be trapped inside your cat’s body. This could cause
Linear foreign body is the term used to describe a
particularly dangerous threat to pets. In cats, the most major injury or trauma.
common linear foreign bodies are string, carpet, and
plastic. Many people play and interact with their cats by
using items such as string, yarn or ribbon. This can
provide your cat with physical and mental exercise and
allow them to exercise their hunting instincts. However,
they should never be left to play unsupervised with
these items as if they are eaten they can become
tangled in your cat’s bowels or stomach, causing
internal damage.

Often the string-like body will catch on the tongue
as the cat swallows while the rest of the foreign body
will attempt to move through the intestinal tract.

Easter grass is soft plastic cut into narrow strips so that it resembles grass although it
does come in a rainbow of colours. Easter grass is often used to line Easter baskets or
decorate people’s homes over the Easter period. The bright colours and the appealing

crunching sound made by this plastic grass is very attractive to cats.

Easter Outfits

Yes pets can look cute dressed as ‘bunnies’ or with their ‘Easter
Parade’ hats on but dressing up is not natural for cats and they
can become very stressed and that’s just not fun!

Opportunity knocks

While this article highlights some potentially serious Easter
threats, I’d like to end by saying that Easter is also a time of
great opportunity for cats to do what so many of them love the
best which is to spend more time with their owners. Happy
Easter to all.
