changes in her behaviour and personality.
Particularly that Snow seems to have
developed a bit of doggie dementia which
has been upsetting. But, each new need
has been adapted to through modifications
to our home, changes to the way that we
handle Snow and of course changes in
what we expect of our darling granny dog.

ONE OF THE EXCITING CHANGES WE HAVE
MADE RECENTLY...Is to get a Snow Mobile

into action so that we can go on more
adventures. Snow has had chronic pain
from arthritis and hip dysplasia since we
first brought her home which she has
always been medicated for but it has only
been lately that we have felt it has impacted
significantly on her quality of life. It started
to become a battle between boredom and
pain for our darling girl as she has not been
able to comfortably walk far enough from
home to get to have some proper fun. We
have been filling the gaps with enrichment
and training but sometimes a girl just has to
get down to the park to enjoy the sun.

Happy “Gotcha Day”
Dear Snow!

We can hardly believe our luck that we still have Snow in “ Snow was returned to DR after 6+

WHEN WE FIRST BROUGHT SNOW HOME IN 2012 WE THOUGHT
SHE MIGHT GET 3 OR 4 GOOD YEARS. Now, at the grand age of
14 Snow continues to fill our hearts and our home with love and we
couldn’t be happier. We feel so lucky to have had her in our lives
for so long.

came to be.” Jess

Perhaps because we have a love of the sea and
boats I’ve often compared this slippery slope that
we seem to be on to being in a sinking ship. Each
new change in Snow is like a new leak which is
met swiftly with a plug as we alter her environment
and our behaviour to meet her needs. We know
that eventually we will run out of plugs and
inevitably this ship is going to sink…

But so long as Snow is happy and has a good
quality of life we will keep each other afloat
until it is time to sail off into the sunset.

POSTCARD FROM BODHI

Hey Guys...I just thought you might like
to see me again after all this time! My
name is Bodhi and I was rescued from
Monika’s DoggieRescue in 2001. I was
1 year old then and had been hit by a
car, my front leg was damaged and I
needed a pin and screws installed. That’s
many years ago now…

I am still going well, a bit deaf and a bit
dotty but I love a walk on the beach and
a run around the park next door with my
brothers (Ralph 12 and Pancakes 4).

We've travelled the entire East Coast of
Australia together ( see top photo ) and
my favourite things in the whole world are
Liver Snacks from Aldi and my mummy.
I’m a good old boy ( says Mummy) and
we are all hoping I can live well for at
least another year. I’m so glad I was
rescued from Monikas for I’ve had a
wondrous life to this ripe old age of 19.

2. MEG ( health issues )

Monika : I recently put my hand up to take an old Maltese x
from Campbelltown pound. She had a lot of medical issues over
and above rotten teeth and loss of hair. She was very lethargic. I
saw she wasn't well and felt that there was something else going
on with her and thought she potentially could have Cushing’s
disease.

Cushing’s disease is common in Maltese dogs, usually caused
by a tumour on the adrenal gland which creates too much
adrenalin in the body. The dogs can end up with a pot belly, a lot
of hair loss and often drink a lot of fluids. Dogs with this disease
need to be kept on medication. We sent her to our vets at The
Cottage Animal Hospital to be assessed. As it turned out the
diagnosis was not Cushing’s... she had diabetes. Diabetic dogs,
like humans, need lifelong daily injections.

Once Meg’s condition was stabilised in the vet clinic she came
home with us - she has to have blood tests twice a day and
injections twice a day to keep her well managed.

Meg is 10 years old and such a little sweetheart. We are
hopeful the right person or family will come along and get
many years pleasure from Meg. She is our cover girl.

3. FUDGE ( behavioural ) I have other dogs and he learned quickly he had to

4. MERRY ( behavioural )

Monika: Merry would snap and growl so I fostered her for a period.
I finally found an applicant I thought would be good so Merry was
adopted. After a short period of time the family phoned, she had nipped
the wife a couple of times and they had lost confidence. I took Merry
back as a foster at my home for a long time. Waited and waited. Then a
capable couple experienced with rescue dogs applied. They initially
had good success with Merry. But after some months the wife called me
and said “ Merry has settled in well but she has bitten a couple of visitors
- can we make an appointment to bring her back”. Unlike some rescue
groups and pounds there is no surrender fee if a dog is returned .

The wife then rang me again and said " I have changed my mind, we
love Merry, she has many positive traits we want to give it another go!"
I suggested they needed to set up a training program and seek some
professional help. Merry is now making good progress with a planned
working program to correct her issues. She is still not perfect but is
making headway because her adopted family care and are
persevering...

5. CHARLIE ( behavioural ) Meaghan, Charlie’s sponsor for many years, says “ As much as
he will always be remembered as a cheeky unpredictable boy,

Charlie was adopted, very early on when we did
not know him well, and was soon returned after

sent me to hospital with a bite wound after I tried
to rescue a live rat out of his mouth.

Charlie mellowed with time like a good wine but
he chose his favourite people and these he

I took her home on my birthday and it was the greatest present I

cuddly, playful, social and even a little cheeky. She has a best

OUT THERE - Meet our gorgeous Staffy x girl Khaleesi! She’s
about 2-3 years old and hasn’t had the best start to her life. She
has been with us for over a year now and early on during that time
we had discovered that she is mostly, if not fully deaf. Although this
is very unfortunate, it doesn’t stop her from learning tricks! She
knows how to sit perfectly with the right hand gesture and she
knows the cue for when to give a big kiss on your face!

Despite being deaf she is an extremely affectionate dog, with
unfortunately not much doggie socialisation under her belt. So she
would be most suited to a home where she is the only dog and can
keep all of the affection to herself. She would need a home with a
decent sized garden so she will be able to get all of her energy out,
and would be well suited to a part time worker.

Our new family member...Samson is absolutely brilliant

Samson’s greatest loves are...He loves cuddles, helping
me put the washing out, walks, meal and treat time but
MOST of all he loves his family.
What do I love the most about Samson? I love walking
