These oldies need our compassion and care the most
and I feel we must try and unshackle the self-centred
thinking about the pain we will feel when we lose them
and reach out to them in their time of need and give
them pleasure and happiness in their remaining years.

To draw attention to some of these grandmas and
grandpas we have commenced a fundraiser on ‘Every
Day Hero’ ( see details on page 19 ) with Hutch our
Grandpa Boy our 16yo who was to be euthanized at the
pound. This little man has no life threatening illness – he
is just old. So many of our mature dogs are like this and
are just looking for a warm cosy bed, some good food
and a little compassion and usually some medication to
keep them going. Is that too much to ask?

Our handsome cover boy Vin Diesel (8yo) has been
with us a while. He has learnt to play with toys and
balls by himself to keep himself entertained. He has
had to adjust to loneliness and make the best of it, but
with his bright personality and contagious smile, surely
he will win someone’s heart and find his human mate?
He is true to his breed, clever, busy, active and quick to
learn. Jack Russell’s are always there for the moment.
Come and meet him at Doggiewood.

This issue is also packed with stories of young people Pugsley Shih Tzu 10yrs Male Sponsor: “Sending lots of

U
My name is Juliette Byak and I am 15 years old.

N I tried to raise as much money as I could for

Crash Bandicoot

Breed: Pomeranian x Italian Greyhound Where is my
Age: 1-2yrs Weight: 5kgs Sex: Male forever family?

Hello Readers,

It’s no exaggeration to say dear little Crash Bandicoot
could easily be the life of the party. With his lust for life,
he will charm his way into the hearts of all who have the
pleasure of knowing him. He loves playing with other
dogs, he is after all himself, an exuberant young dog,
longing to do young doggie things. When chasing a ball
his slim, sleek body is a joy to behold.

Crash’s passion though is jumping, and jumping HIGH.
How wonderful he would be on an agility course, I can
picture him now, taking first prize. Secure fencing for this
small athlete is a must! If you are seeking a calm, sweet

Crash is pictured with Kennel hand Cara natured, loving, active, handsome doggie, look into those
eyes, Crash ticks all the boxes.

I have found that he loves everyone but is not needy of
attention. He is happy to settle away from the bustle of
people and other dogs, and sleep peacefully after his
meal. He would love a family willing to take him for long
walks and encourage his athletic pursuits. The rewards
would be the extreme pleasure of gaining his love and
devotion, what could be more precious.

Wishing you love and the family you deserve gorgeous

with Greg
& Riley

MEET RILEY

We ask DR Volunteer Greg Ross about
one of his DR favourites Riley…

What is Riley like? Riley is a no fuss
dog always in the back ground and shy of
those he doesn't know. But I can assure
you if you are a patient, gentle and
understanding person this guy will repay
you back in love and loyalty. I have seen
this on many occasions at the shelter
when he greets those he knows.

Riley’s greatest loves are? Riley loves
to chase a thrown ball and I would
imagine he would suit an active person.
He also loves the water.

What sort of family would suit him?
He is a great little mate and would make
some family a very faithful, loving pet, he
just needs a little time to get to know you
for his true, gentle personality and the
loving dog I know, to shine through. So a
family with patience and empathy. Also
an active family who likes to walk or run.

hypocrisy of claiming we love animals as we chow down

has been forced to reveal evidence of animal cruelty in
the live animal export trade, this time to Vietnam. In their
report they stated the following (and this might be the

this would happen to Australian animals exported to the
region. Yet we are constantly told by the industry and
parliamentarians that there are rules in place to prevent
such abuse.

These rules, known as the Exporter Supply Chain
Assurance System (ESCAS), simply do not work. Yet trying
to get an admission of this fact from the industry and their
acolyte politicians is impossible, in spite of the industry’s
own admission that the behaviour described above,
happened not once, not twice, but thousands of times over.

JULY 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 13

It was not until March 2015 after two years and thousands of sledge hammered Australian
cattle later that the industry, so devoted to live exports, recognised that there was a serious
problem. And what was their response? An end to the live export trade? Well….no, it was a
six point plan. A plan which in effect is a one-point plan. To see the reasons why go to:

begets violence against other human beings.

However, juxtaposed against this horror, is the glimmer
of hope for animal welfare advocates, at least in NSW,
with the election to the Upper House of State parliament in
March, of Mark Pearson from The Animal Justice Party.
Putting aside the vision of an animal friendly MP sitting
alongside members of The Shooters and Fishers Party,
Mr Pearson now has the opportunity and responsibility to
make a difference in NSW in animal welfare.

Mr Pearson, a former executive director of Animal
Liberation Australia, will oppose a planned crackdown on
activists who break into farms to secretly film suspected

kangaroo meat trade and seek a ban on battery egg
farming. He is also an advocate of action against puppy

Hi Fans,

Christmas in July Christmas is my favourite time of the year
is such fun... and if you are like me and can’t wait until
December here are my tips to celebrate
a really cool Chrissie in July….

Can I have 1. Get Mum to bring out all your
a party? Christmas decorations and don’t
forget the tree - how about a pot
plant or even a Gum tree branch!

2. Help Mum to bake some extra
yummy shortbread or ginger bread
biscuits or a Christmas pudding with
custard.

3. Add twinkling Christmas lights.
4. Invite some friends (& their doggies).

Set the theme by playing your favorite Chrissie carols. Add
the warmth of a fire or glowing heater. I love Christmas...
5. Have a ‘secret Santa’ theme & each guest brings a gift to put
under the tree. (don’t forget a gift for your doggie too.)

Hello Readers,

Argus AKA Freud is going great. He has
been swimming and loves his home. He eats
everything (except red capsicum) and is very
protective to his home & pack ( that's us ).
Last time at the beach we all had fish &
chips after a long walk and swim. He loves
raw chicken bones and rice and premium
Hills tinned food. He 100% toilet trained now.

Argus gets excited to see us but is calming a
little, in other words is slowly overcoming his
separation anxiety. He tried to bite my friend
and also our vet but is realizing this is not a
good option. He is being trained in the
former and our vet is bigger & tougher than
him and has drugs and muzzles. Mary takes
him for 1 hour walks & he enjoys his large
backyard. He also likes to bark at passersby
and exert his authority over his property. We
love him.

POST CARD A BIG THANK YOU TO
TEISHA & JESS
FROM EMMA

Hello Readers,
It's been almost 2 months since Emma has come to live with us
and she has settled in so well. On Mothers Day we all went for a
drive to the Leura VIP Doggie Store and Emma chose a new big
comfy bed for herself. She was so gorgeous - we got a few
different beds for her to try and she just sniffed them. Then we put
the one she chose on the floor and she jumped in it and lay down
for a cuddle - LOL - so that's the one she got! We also got her
some new toys which she loves. We all look forward to getting our
DR magazine each month. Lots of love, Naomi & Ken & Emma

DESEXING YOUR KITTY -

HELP FOR THOSE IN NEED!

Compiled by Deborah Rouse

There are many benefits for desexing your kitty – the major reason is to reduce the mass annual killing of cats in
pounds, shelters and at vets across Australia each year.

The most commonly referenced number is 250,000 for cats and dogs euthanized (unnecessarily killed) across
Australia each year.

Australia should be ashamed, as the UK rate is about a tenth of ours - 25,000, for a nation that has a population
ten times the size of ours! What is going on?

• It is an urban myth that a female cat should be allowed to have one litter.
• It is also an urban myth that a male cat’s testicles are somehow connected to its owner’s, although

psychologically should perhaps be recognised... but still treated ;)

Desexing is the most powerful step you can take to decrease the number of kitties killed each year, and
make an impact on the number that find themselves in pounds and shelters through no fault of their own.

Yes there is some discomfort for your kitty – and you will need to organise, deliver, pick up and keep an eye on
your recovering pet.

If you are not able to afford the costs, don’t put it off:

• shop around – the costs vary from vet to vet, some vets will offer discounts to regular clients,
those clients they know are in need, and also if you have rescued the animal (apologies to these
champion vets who are so kind in offering discounts, and who are making their $ contribution to
animal welfare – also you must be comfortable with any vet you choose who will responsibly look
after your furr-child)

• also contact the National Desexing Network, an Australian national organisation
http://www.ndn.org.au/
