16 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE Khaleesi came into the shelter in May 2016 from Wyong pound. In those days the shelter was mostly full of foxies and white fluffies, so Khaleesi was one of the larger doggies at the \"me. I was doing volunteer feeding 2016 and that’s when I first met her. FEATURE : LONG TERM DOGS AT DOGGIERESCUE Wrien by: ZELDA ROSE “ KHALEESI ”DOGGIERESCUE’S LONGEST RESIDENT This granny Khaleesi has been at the shelter for 10 years! You can tell by her name as it’s from Game of Thrones which was popular, about 10 years ago). Khaleesi has had many names over the years. From K, Leesi to Lulu which the kennel hands tend to call her. I do remember one ofthem calling her The White Terror! Khaleesi is congenitally deaf, and as a result of life in the shelter, she came to not like strangers, unfortunately. Despite this Khaleesi has many friends who have grown to love her. Her longest buddies areJanelle, Nat, Caz, Lesley and myself. As well as the majority of kennel hands, including Jackie who has won her over in a matter of months. Only recently we discovered that Peter the lawn mowing man is also friends with her.
MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE .COM E-MAGAZINE 175. 6. A few months ago Khaleesi was diagnosed with a synovial myxosarcoma. She has had an amputation of her front right leg from the elbow down in the hopes of containing the cancer. Khaleesi still has the same energy as the young teenager I first saw attempting to rip some wrought iron panel off the wall of a kennel. She is a pocket rocket with staffy energy in bounds. She can still outwalk any dog at the shelter and needs to be reminded that she has cancer. It does not hold her back. Our amazing Doggie Rescue volunteer Janelle ( pictured with her ) is fostering her after her operation and she is doing really well. Fingers crossed Khaleesi has many more happy years at DoggieRescue, or even beffler in a home with someone who loves and understands her and whom she shares a bond with. 18 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE P O S T C A R D We catch up with … “ HELLY ” aka Bon ita GORGEOUS COVER MUMMY MAY 2025 Written by : MadelineBonita is now named Helly, although she does sll get called Bonita somemes as a nickname, but mostly gets called by her nicknames Jerry or Jeremy (don’t ask, don’t know how we got there ). She settled in much quicker than I expected when I first adopted her given how much of a timid little girl she was, and now her quirky personality has fully come out and she has gained so much confidence experiencing new things. She was the perfect addition to our family. She’s bonded the closest with my other rescue Chihuahua X Dinky (black and white longhair), which has been cute to watch as Dinky had never been too affectionate with other dogs but accepted Helly instantly wanting to cuddle up to her all the time and now seeks her out as well to cuddle. Dinky in return has taught Helly everything she knows about being cheeky and barking at people who walk past the house and any noises in the backyard.
MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 19 Blizzard Her favourite thing in the world is getting chest and back scratches and you’re not allowed to stop otherwise she paws at you until you start again. She is very demanding! She of course sleeps in bed with me and her sisters at night and loves to tuck herself under my arm to sleep or burrows down to my feet in true chihuahua form. I think her other favourite thing is also the electric blanket. She also loves FOOD. Anythingand everything. Another favourite is sunbaking with her sisters Eevee, Dinky and Nelly the cat (but does not love wearing sunscreen and her spf shirts) and doing zoomie laps of the backyard. She is a good girl for her bath times and skincare routine, and gets the zoomies every time after she’s moisturised. Helly comes to work with me at Blue Mountains Pet Resort in Blackheath most days and hangs out with me and runs amuck with the boarding dogs in the kennels and has made some friends along the way. She is still figuring out how to play and gaining confidence interacting with new dogs but is always happy to just hang out, but every now and then she finds a dog that she clicks with. After adopting her the first dog she ever played with was a border collie at work named Mack who she developed a MAJOR crush on. It was love at first sight, as soon as she saw him through a fence she started crying to go play with him. Thank you for the update on one of her babies inlast month’s issue! It’s so cute to see and he really does look just like her. Madeline & Helly Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers! Love my electric blanket Sunbaking Halloween was scary
20 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE MOTHER’S DAY FEATURE Article by: MARIO BASSI DR KENNEL HAND 20 “Autumn” A Mother’s Heart Ready for Its Next Chapter As May brings the warmth of Mother’s Day, it invites us to reflect on the strength and devo on that define motherhood. At DoggieRescue, that spirit shines through in Autumn, a gentle Siberian Husky. We believe she once raisedher daughter Denali, who is also at the shelter, by her side. While Staffy crosses may be the most visible dogs at the shelter, Husky crosses have quietly become one of our largest groups. After a large-scale rescue from a hoarding situation in late 2021, DoggieRescue became home to many huskies who had known nothing but survival. Autumn was one of them. Her early life was marked by hardship. She lived in filth, competed for scarce food, and had little to no human interaction. She arrived without understanding routine, home life, or even how to walk on a lead. Yet, over time, something deeply moving has emerged. Sponsors: “In loving memory of Squirtle!” Nikie & Jeroen & In memory of Otto & ex DR Rohan!” Gail Starke
MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE 21 Photos: Kim , Lesley & Abbey At around 10 years old, Autumn carries a calm, grounding presence. There is a quiet wisdom about her. Her softness speaks of resilience rather than fear. She moves through the shelter with gentle steadiness, taking in the world at her own pace. Most of our Huskies share their space with another dog, moving between kennels and day yards each morning and evening. While some pairs struggle to match each other’s pace, Autumn and Denali stand out. Together, they are perfectly synchronized, moving as one. They are calm, balanced, and in tune, as if they are gently pulling an invisible sled. Autumn is smaller than a typical Husky, weighing around 12.5 kg, and walks beautifully on a loose lead. She remains calm around cars, other dogs, and people. Walkers often describe her as gentle, affectionate, and easy to handle. She has also mastered the art of winning treats by lifting her gaze with a sweet, soft yet determined look that is hard to resist. Autumn can be sensitive to sudden movement and noise, so she would do best in a home with children aged 12 or older. Despite this, she has done incredibly well at public events and in a home environment, enjoying treats, indoor zoomies, and the simple comfort of being inside. She travels well and tends to adapt to new experiences. Autumn is a quiet soul with so much love to give. This Mother’s Day, she reminds us of resilience, nurture, and the enduring strength of a mother’s heart. Now, she is ready for her next chapter, a home where she can finally be cared for.

24 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE IN FOCUS LONG TERM DOGS Written by: Michelle Elliott (below) WILL YOU TAKE A CHANCE ON ALVIN? Sweet lible Alvin is one of our long termers, who has spent most of his life at the shelter. A favourite amongst KH’s and volunteers, just one look at his cufie pie face will melt your heart. A very handsome boy, Kelpie x Staffy, and the first dog listed on our website – it’s unbelievable he hasn’t been adopted yet. But one of the main reasons Alvin has been overlooked for so many years, is that he needs someone with rescue experience. Alvin arrived almost 6 years ago amidst the chaos of Covid and lock-down, as a very scared and nervous doggie who was only 12 months old. It was obvious he hadn’t been exposed to much in his life, and was potentially yelled at a lot prior to coming to the shelter, as everything scared him – new people, new places, loud noises – so the shelter was a terrifying place for him. In his yard, he would do endless excited circles, almost like a circus animal. So stressed he could not stop moving. Even walks were not a happy place for him and he would constantly put the breaks on and react to almost anything. It was so sad. I know Alvin’s forever home is out there somewhere, so hopefully someone will take a chance on Lible Al soon. Six years is too long to be livingin a shelter, he is so deserving of some real comfort, security and joy in his life.
MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 25 Luckily he was friendly with other dogs and we were able to pair him up with a lovely doggie called Piper. She helped calm him and give him confidence and he finally began enjoying walks whenthey went out together, and he even learned to likewalking on his own. He slowly began coming out of his shell with people, watching Piper interact with humans, showing him they could be trusted. It was so beautiful watching them play together, it’s amazing the healing that animals can provide other animals. But gorgeous Piper was adopted a few years ago, and even though Alvin has had other doggie friends over the years, none of them have had the same effect as Piper and Alvin is back to doing circles in his yard, even when he has a friend. He is becoming more stressed, and really not coping with shelter life. It’s beyond heartbreaking. Alvin is still nervous with strangers and he can be a little reactive when you first meet him, but behind the barking is a very nervous, scared boy who has had avery rough life. And it really doesn’t take long for Alvin to warm up to you – once he has met you a few timesand you begin to win his trust, wow are you rewarded! Alvin is the most affectionate, cuddly boy who loves scratches, pats and nuzzling into you. He is incredibly sweet, walks well on lead and knows basic commands such as sit and drop, and responds best to slow, gentle handling. He loves to walk and even run, is great in the car and would suit a single person or couple. He could be the only dog in the household, or potentially live with another dog. “ We say he needs rescue experience as Alvin needs someone who will be pafient with him, someone who is willing to come to the shelter a number of fimes to meet him and build a relafionship with him.” Alvin can sometimes still be reactive on lead, so he needs someone who can handle this behaviour, and continue to build his confidence in new places. But if someone would take a chance on Alvin, he is the type of dog that would blossom outside of the shelter. I’ve taken him out on numerous occasions, and once he is in a safe space with someone he trusts, he is an absolute joy and would be the perfect companion. Sponsor:“ Happy forever home soon sweetheart!” Janelle & Ed

30 30 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE Celebrang the Unsung Heroes: The Love and Strength of Mother Cats this Mother’s Day FEATURE ARTICLE The First Moments: An Unbreakable Bond From the moment a mother cat gives birth (typically between 1 to 10 kittens depending upon her breed, age and overall health), she instantly forms an unbreakable bond with her kittens. This bond, full of tenderness and devotion, is the cornerstone of their survival and wellbeing. A mother cat’s protective instincts are as strong as they come and she works tirelessly to ensure that each of her kittens is safe, healthy and nurtured. As soon as the kittens are born, the mother cat takes immediate charge, gently licking each one to clean them and stimulate their breathing. She nurses them with her warm body, keeping them close and providing nourishment. The act of nursing is not just about feeding—it’s a moment of deep connection, a time when the kittens feel safe and loved, hearing the rhythmic purring of their mother as they curl up beside her. Mother's Day is the perfect time to celebrate the women who shape our world—those whose love, dedication, and strength go above and beyond. While we often think of our own mothers and the nurturing they provide, there’s a special group of mothers whose love is just as boundless and just as remarkable: the mothers of the feline world. In honour of Mothers’ Day, let’s celebrate the loving mother cats who give their all to raise their precious kittens. The Selflessness of Mother Cats Mother cats are some of the most selfless creatures on earth. Their entire focus is on the wellbeing of their kittens. While the first few weeks are critical, her care doesn’t stop there. As the kittens grow, the mother continues to teach them the essential life skills they need. She shows them how to groom themselves, how to hunt, and how to interact with the world around them and if she is a pet in a human household she will teach them how to use the kitty litter! These lessons ensure the kittens will grow up to be healthy, confident cats—ready to face the world on their own. What’s truly remarkable is how mother cats often do all of this with little or no help. In the wild, they are responsible for everything: from feeding to defending their little ones from potential predators. Even in the comfort of a home, foster home, pound or rescue shelter, the maternal instinct remains just as strong. And while the mother cat may not always seek affection or attention for herself, she is often the centre of the kittens’ world offering a steady, calm presence during their formative days.
MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 31By Antonette DiorioCAT ADOPTION OFFICER Antonette has her Certificate II in Animal Care and Certificate III in Captive Animals. The Unseen Sacrifices Motherhood, for any species, is full of sacrifices. For mother cats, this can sometimes mean enduring hardships for the sake of their kittens. Many stray or feral cats face difficult conditions, including limited food and shelter, but they never falter in their commitment to their young. “ Their determinaon and resilience are nothing short of awe-inspiring. A Mother cat will go to incredible lengths to keep their kiffiens safe, even in the face of adversity.” When a mother cat is rescued from the streets, it’s o$en a biffiersweet moment. The mother may have been struggling for months, enduring harsh weather, hunger, and uncertainty. Yet, in spite of it all, she keeps moving forward—because she knows her kittens depend on her. And even after they are weaned, she continues to be their protector, guiding them as they navigate the challenges of growing up. Honoring the Mother Cats As we celebrate Mother’s Day this year, let’s take a moment to honour the mother cats who may not always receive the recognition they deserve. Whether they’re strays, shelter cats, or beloved pets, these mums are superheroes in their own right. They give everything they have to raise their kittens, and their quiet, fierce love is an inspiration to us all. If you’ve ever adopted a kitten, you’ve likely seen a glimpse of the care and love the mother gave. But let’s not forget the mothers who still need help. Many rescue organizations, like Monika’s DoggieRescue, are working tirelessly to support mother cats, offering food, shelter, and veterinary care to ensure that they—and their kittens—can have the best start possible. These organizations make a huge difference in the lives of so many cats, and they’re always in need of support.

34 MAY 2026 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E- MAGAZINE “Dezzy became our handyman\/ mascot on social media and he always brought in the help we needed. As he grew older, he soffiened, he was not as feisty as before but whenever there was a man around, he would not stop barking un l they were long gone. Slowly his hearing declined and his anxiety lessened.” Monika “ Although Dezzy never found a forever home his family was DoggieRescue. This is where he was at his happiest and most content…”This side of heaven is a special place called “ Rainbow Bridge” where all animals are restored to health and happiness... Vale “Dezzy” 2011-202615 YEARS “There will never be another Dezzy. We will hold him close to our hearts…” Monika Dezzy came in May 2013, back in the day when we were full of fluffy white dogs and he was the last of that era. He was only 2 years old and we tried many times, more than six times in fact, to find him a home but each time he was returned. He was a quirky character but we all grew to love him. Dezzy was happy and never wanted to leave us. It just took a while for us to figure this out! He considered each adoption as a short holiday and was always very pleased when he came back. He had a lot of people wrapped around his little paws, who gave him special grooming, special chicken tit bits or took him for outings and weekend stays. In April he did not want to eat and he was lethargic. Our vets found some tumour in the small intestine and a liver that did not look great. Despite being in poor condition, they did a biopsy. During his stay in hospital, he declined. Many people came to visit him whilst in hospital and a small group gathered to farewell him to a better world across Rainbow Bridge.

A broken boy, who came You were not easy company You bit, and growled You barked and howled You even tried to run away When you didn’t want to play And with great pa$ence did we try To keep your happiness at high, To teach you how to love and trust Our gentle tolerance, a must And slowly you began to thaw Your head in laps, a loving paw, Each sign of love a gracious feat The hurt and pain, you did defeat And in good $me, you came to be The most loyal, loving boy to me And I your mamma, so very proud You became the favourite of the crowd. Now my shadow has gone and le And I am standing here, bere Your li(le footsteps are no more Nor your head, peeking past the door When in my arms, you lay so deep And dried to your final sleep I kissed and stroked your li(le head, Whispered, “I love you, always, darling Ned”.
