• Feline FEATURE FOCUSING ON CAT ENCLOSURES PART 1

Upgrading Doggie Rescue
outdoor cat enclosures

At the shelter we are establishing new outside enclosures for many
of our kitties to share.

We were very grateful to a previous donation of small wired sections of an outdoor cat Written by
enclosure which we merged together. This was used often. One day ten kitties were in Deb Rouse
different sections of what was a small structure but offered different platforms and a
maze of routes for the kitties to use. The use by so many kitties concurrently was the

best recommendation from the kitties that clearly told us how much

they appreciated being outside and safe.

Outdoor enclosures offer

stimulation and enrichment

in a safe environment

“ Pinocchio enjoying the Winter sunshine”
The best thing about outdoor cat enclosures
is that your kitties can be safe from other
animals. Other benefits include: access to
sunlight and fresh air, views to watch the
birds and other animals, with cat walkways
and platforms providing an area to exercise
(“stretch their legs”) and choices to be made
by the kitties including “space” from one
another or even room for cuddles for two or
more kitties. See the enclosure starting to
take shape below.

While many people believe that
cats should enjoy nature, we need

to ensure this is achieved in a

responsible way and that the cats
will not become bored in a

prison-like structure.

AUGUST 2017 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E- MAGAZINE 9

Progress of upgrades of
cat enclosures

We are still in our first steps of construction for the
replacement or “renovations” for room sized enclosures for
multiple grown cats to socialise together and with people. If
you visit the shelter you will see the new kitty sections – the
external structures will soon be completed. Once secure the
kitties are allowed use, though we have lots more to
do on the internal fittings.

The internal “fittings” will include:

• platforms on multiple levels – cats love being in a tree

and the options a tree gives them, we will provide many
vertical levels in our enclosures to mimic trees

• multiple walkways – multiple or what is termed

“alternate paths” so that the cats can choose their way,
and if needed choose to be with or to avoid other cats

Meet & Greet sessions reality thanks to the very kind generosity of our
sponsors and the help of our many volunteers
To enable people to get up close to our kitties, we will be who are:
offering bookable sessions, similar to a cat café. Some of our
kitties can’t get enough pats, and some just want to “hang • WILLEM : CLICK HERE FOR WEBSITE
out” with people. The meet & greet sessions will be managed
in a responsible way to ensure our kitties have the choice to (http://www.cubbiesandcabins.com.au/)
be with people or, if they want, they may retire for their who gave up his time, expertise and products
midday siesta. More information will be provided soon. to help our kitties ( see below ),

Where’s

WHY DID YOU my mum?

ABANDON ME?

PCC360

For the thousands of cats and kittens
abandoned to pounds each year only 3%
are claimed. Those lucky enough to go to
a rescue group survive but the remainder
are euthanized. Whether you live or die is
a lottery and can depend on the amount of
cats in the pound, the time of year the
pets are abandoned, with Christmas and
school holidays peak periods, but lately it
seems that shelters are always full.

So many cats are owned by uncaring
owners, they are not desexed, allowed to
roam, their lives held cheap. They are
dumped/ abandoned or lost and their
family never cares to look for them. Many
are surrendered. So cats come into the
pound, unloved, unwanted, some are
pregnant or with a litter of kittens... and
they die. All that is left to show that they
ever lived is an impounding number on a
council register. It is so sad.
