Dear Readers,

Everyone who meets Grayson (pictured with me

and engaging with people! He charms everyone off their
feet! Why is he here? Grayson is lucky to be alive. He was
dragging himself around after a suspected car accident,
surviving on dog biscuits from the family who found him.
He came in with nerve damage and incontinence. He
stayed at our vets to see if he would regain some control
as nerves heal slowly but unfortunately this did not

BEING A KITTY WRANGLER AT

MONIKA'S DOGGIERESCUE by Amelia Spence

I have been volunteering at Monika’s DoggieRescue
most Fridays in the cat section for seven months. When
volunteering with the cats there are several tasks which
I regularly perform, include cleaning the cat rooms (for
example, sweeping and wiping down the tables), kitty
litter changes and general tidying up. I also occasionally
assist with customer service responsibilities. Now, to the
fun stuff: I get to cuddle the cats as well as play with
them. I also photograph the cats and post on Doggie
Rescue’s Facebook page, which helps to showcase the
rescue cats.

My first visit to DoggieRescue

I first visited Monika’s DoggieRescue as a dog walker.
As time went on, Monika started to branch out and
rescue cats as well. My husband and I had come one
day to walk the dogs and we noticed the cat section,
which is where we met our cat Feta, now known as
Cinnamon. I first started volunteering at Monika’s Doggie
Rescue after inspiration struck!

My husband and I had been feeding a stray cat every
night and were concerned for its welfare and were
seeking advice. We contacted the former volunteer kitty
coordinator, Deb Rouse, who assisted us in gaining the
trust of the stray and gave us tips on trapping and the
procedure when you rescue a kitty of the street. Once Learning Behavioural Techniques
the kitty had been rescued, Deb came to our home and
filled us with knowledge regarding training techniques,
socialisation and tips on how to gain kitty’s trust. I was During my time at Monika’s DoggieRescue Deb
so awe-inspired by her dedication to cats that I felt I too taught me a great deal about cats, including

known as the little lion technique. Cats are approached

hand is nice and there is no need to fear.

Other techniques include : Using a toy or a brush at It is extremely rewarding having worked on a cat that

signs of distress occur then you would stop the session.

As every volunteer does, I
have a few kittys who I call
my favourites.

Logan ( pictured with me at left ) is a big fluffy
ginger cat who enjoys being the centre of
attention, and boy don’t you know it! Levi is
Logan’s sister ( with him at right ) and she is
bonded to Logan. Levi is quieter than Logan but
still just as cute. She is a sweet cat who loves a
pat and enjoys having a rest rather than being
in the action like king Logan!

Last but certainly not least is Angelica,
affectionately known as Angie. Poor
Angie was rescued from a hoarding
situation and thus hasn’t had much
interaction with people. Although, that
is slowly changing as kitty wrangles
employ the little lion techniques Deb
has trained us in.

Angie is now licking food off my
fingers, and learning hands aren’t
scary.. but with timid cats it’s often one
step forward two steps back, but don’t
worry Angie, you’ve come to a
wonderful non-kill charity, you have
all the time in the world.

“ I believe all cats deserve a second
chance at life, even the particularly
scared ones. It is also nice getting
to know the other volunteers and
kennel hands who work with the
cats and dogs. I am particularly
grateful to the former Doggie
Rescue Kitty Co-Ordinator Deb for
all she has taught me.” Amelia

We met Amelia mid January 2017. At this time we
were preparing for our wedding and my soon to be
husband was heading off to the farm every few weeks
and I was feeling a bit lonely as I am from Belgium.

Pleased to
meet you!
When we brought her Amelia home, she spent the
first 2 days hiding under the bath tub before finally
venturing out to join us. To make her feel
comfortable, we didn’t only buy her a scratching
pole, we bought her “the Cat-Mahal”.

Since then, as you will see by the photos, Amelia has
adapted to the apartment and to her life with us very
well. She is the ruler of our bed, wherever she wants
to sleep she will do so.

We couldn’t imagine our life without her, we love her
very much. Sarah and Byron McDonald

• FEATURE Rabbit behaviour through play By Vivienne Chan

Play time,

all the time!

When you visit a pet shop that sells toys, you may
find that there are multiple colour variations of a
particular kong toy for dogs and a lot of different
sized scratching towers for cats. But why are
there little to no toys for rabbits? Is it because
rabbits don't like to play?

The answer is no, rabbits LOVE to play.
The lack of rabbit friendly toys is due to common
misunderstandings over rabbit behaviour and the
fear of rabbits chewing up and swallowing something SNOWFLAKE Chinchilla Agouti Coat 2.6kgs Female
