‘LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH’ - A NO KILL SHELTER
By Monika Biernacki OAM
Dear Readers,
The February issue is always our
Valentine issue and our gorgeous little
Hansel and Gretel feature on our cover
page. What a pair of cuties! They
certainly are in love with each other and
with trepidation worry what lies ahead.
Granny Rosa is helping me write this
editorial. Isn’t she cute with those floppy
ears – listening into everything! She is
trying very hard to find that special
person on Valentine’s Day.
Our January adoptions have not been as
high as in former years but we are still
working hard – indeed harder than ever
to find the right matches. Medium and
large dogs are no longer as popular and
the post Covid wave of dumping dogs
continues. Whilst we have smaller dogs Monika with Rosa
they are usually mature ones who have
been neglected in the past and needing
special people to take them under their “ Happy Valen ne’s Day to all our volunteers and
wings and nurse them. supporters and thank you for being there for all the pets -
-- and Rosa blows you all special doggy kisses!” Monika
Some of our long-term dogs have received poems or special
messages from some of our sponsors and volunteers for
Valentine’s Day. How good is that? They are shared on the following
pages next to their professional photos taken by Kevin from
Unleashed Northern Beaches. So touching!
We have a beautiful postcard from Tommy adopted at almost 16
years, into a family of 5 other small old dogs. The love and joy these
dogs bring to their humans is really heart-warming. We have a few
oldies who would be very happy to be part of such a family!
We also revisit Dahlia, a long-term girl who was adopted by a very
committed couple who continue to change their lives to accommo-
date her. How many people can honestly say they have done this for
their dog?
Corinne has featured some of our dateless boys who are scrambling
Tommy with Daddy to get some attention and love and some very kissable girls as well.

Dearest Dougie,
I’ve often ended my days at the
shelter with a lovely, leisurely stroll
Having survived the midday swelter,
the heat having taken its toll
With you, dear Dougie, by my side,
I feel a sense of peace
You’re happy enough with me as

decrease.
I so admire your poise and grace,
and the tenderness you’ve shown.
As we’ve cuddled in a shady place,

Dear Leonardo, you are a big, beautiful boofhead
You lean on me as if I were your own personal dog bed
It's you I adore, as you wave your paw
Even though you are only after a treat,

While I give you a cuddle and pat your soft fur,
your sighs of contentment make my eyes blur
With tears for you and your homeless state,
if only someone would take you on a date

Hello everyone, I've been volunteering at Monika's Doggie Rescue for almost
6 years now, 2 – 3 days a week in a variety of roles including; harnessing, dog
walking, enrichment and kennel hand duties. I love spending time at the shelter and
find it extremely enjoyable and rewarding. Each month it will be my pleasure to tell
you about some of the beautiful dogs patiently waiting for their forever homes.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO
TESS—THE GIRL I ADORE!
BY JANELLE HOLLIS
DR Volunteer
As it’s Valen ne’s Day this month, I’d like to
introduce you to a beau ful girl who holds a special
place in my heart. He name is Tessa (affec onately
known as ‘Tessie’) and she’s an 8 year old Sharpei
Kelpie cross. She’s one of the longer term dogs
pa ently wai ng for her forever home.
Tessie and I have been going out together at least twice
a week for around 3 years now. She’s great company and
we go for lovely walks and drives together. I always look
forward to spending time with her and enjoy every minute.
We always go for a drive in the car on our outings, and
I’ll often get some lovely, sneaky kisses on my face
whenever she sees the opportunity. During the ride, she
loves sticking her head out of the car window so she can
feel the wind in her face. Seeing her little ears flapping in
the wind is adorable and gives me so much joy.
However, getting to know Tessie can take a little time.
She isn’t really a 'love at first sight' kind of girl. She has
been hurt and let down in the past and likes to take things
slowly. Understandably, she needs to feel comfortable
and confident that you’re someone she can trust. Once
she feels comfortable and lets her guard down, her sweet
and funny character shines through.
Tessie needs an experienced person who is willing to
take the time to establish and maintain a good
relationship with her. I really believe having empathy
for her feelings, talking to her, and being patient to move
forward at her own pace, goes a long way towards
building her trust. And of course, lots and lots of love!
In the right home where she feels loved, safe and secure,
I think this loyal and affectionate little girl will flourish.
FEBRUARY 2023 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 27
• Apart from yummy treats,
one of Tessie’s favourite
things is water. She’s a real
water baby and loves sitting
in puddles (particularly muddy
ones!) As soon as she sees
a puddle, she’s in it!
Thankfully she also loves a
dip in the nice clean creek
and gets very excited
playing with the water spray
from the garden hose.
HERE IS MY VALENTINE’S DAY POEM FOR TESS
My darling Tess, the girl I adore
I wish, oh I wish, I could offer you more
Your coat so black and ears so small
You're my sweetheart, quirks and all
What happens tomorrow, who can say
And we can't wish our lives away
So lets go out and enjoy the sun
Forget our cares and have some fun!

SPOTLIGHT ON : LONG TERM DOGS WRITTEN BY : DAVID DR VOLUNTEER
PEANUT’S LOOKING FOR LOVE!
Volunteer David writes
about his little mate
called Peanut. A long
term dog who at just two
years of age has spent
a lot of his life at Doggie
Rescue shelter.
1. 2. 3. 4.
Peanut finds most of his enjoyment in an environment
within nature, one that is less stimulating, such as a
bush walk or quiet beach. He absolutely loves going
out for his walks to sniff the new smells. He also
routinely enjoys finding spots in the shade to roll on
his back and sit with you. He is very easy to teach
and will sit, shake hands and loves his treats!
To me, walking with Peanut is a great way to be in the
present moment and connect with your senses. He
has a great ability to really meet you there in that
space of mindfulness and enjoy the safety of the walk
and nature’s environment. He is such a gentle dog.
5. 6. 7. 8.
He would suit an environment where he can feel safe,
without too much stimulation. Ideally I see Peanut as
a warm hearted dog who is seeking a place to rest,
feel safe long term and for someone to understand
him and his needs. Peanut is incredibly loyal and
would make a great long term buddy and loving
companion.
