“ LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH ” - A NO-KILL SHELTER
Volunteers share the compassion that we have for
companion animals and through this work meet
like-minded people to share and laugh with.
Friendships are formed with other people as well
as the animals you care for. Indeed sometimes it
gets people thinking about lasting relationships
with the dogs or cats and adoption results.
Tovah has captured some of happy expressions
on our dogs’ faces when they have been out with
some of our volunteers. It shows the impact
volunteering has. We had a brief chat with some of
them and the reasons why they get involved. They
all do varied things and each enjoys what they are
doing. There is no age limit.
Bas has been coming for a few years taking the
larger, stronger, high energy dogs for a good work
out! It relieves the tensions of the dogs that build
up from living in a shelter environment. They love
the special time he offers and the pleasures that it
brings – rolling on grass, splashing in creeks,
digging in sand, all far away from the bustle of
shelter life. It helps them relax and behave better.
Becky one of our long standing volunteers has
th
just run a 10 annual fundraiser from her home

volunteers! Simply amazing. Thank you Becky

While Monika is the heart, our volunteers are the life blood of DoggieRescue and it is impossible to describe in
words the difference that they make so we have done it with photos. Look at the expressions! The whole demeanour
of a dog changes with a little love, attention, some one on one affection, a roll on the grass and a good run or brisk
walk. Wagging tails. Shining eyes. Smiles and sloppy tongues. For these dogs who have been neglected, ignored
and abandoned, if not abused, these moments in their life at the shelter are priceless in their rehabilitation.

responsibility of having a life to care for. As
most stories go with adoptions, we took a
little time to settle in and get used to each
other but I have to say, honestly, every sin-
gle time I look at her, I fall in love all over
again. She has brought me so much joy and
love, I just can’t describe it.
SHE IS MY SHADOW, ALWAYS FOLLOWING
ME, BY MY SIDE. She boops me with her
little nose on my leg when I’m getting her
breakfast and dinner ready. When I get out
of the shower, I see that she has left her
favourite toy for me in the doorway. Some-
times, if I’m lucky, two of her favourite toys.
(photo at left). She hangs out with me
watching TV, snuggles every night right up
close in bed with me, pressing her fuzzy bum
on my arm. She is a little pat bandit, greeting
everyone she sees, offering her softness to
be patted.
BY 2014 I DECIDED THAT IT WOULD BE
NICE FOR HONEY TO HAVE COMPANY.
Honey was alone whilst I was at work, so I

Dear Honey! Dear Honey!
Dear Honey! ear Honey!
Yesterday was 12 years since I adopted this precious angel
from your rescue centre. I wanted to say thank you for saving
her and trusting me to give her a good life.
HER NAME WAS HEATHER WHEN SHE WAS AT YOUR CENTRE, BUT
I CHANGED IT TO HONEY. I came to your centre on 9/9/07 to adopt
a fur baby. I was given a few dogs to walk and she was one of them.
When she was handed to me she was a skinny pile of fluffy bones
and was just so sad. I took her for a slow little walk and gave her
back. I just couldn’t decide who to take home. I went over to the
door way that was barricaded with a baby gate and a bunch of dogs “ The three of us are a very happy
were behind it all barking at me excitedly, and there was Honey, at family, walking every day and saying
the back of the group, quiet, not barking, just looking at me. My hi to all the doggos and humans. ”
heart melted for her and I just knew she was the one.

HONEY HAS SEEN MANY OTHER RESCUED ANIMALS
COME AND GO FROM MY HOME OVER THE YEARS.
Once, when we had ducklings, Honey would walk around
the home with a line of quacking little ducklings pad pad
padding behind her, following her around as if she were
their mom. She would also steal their peas if they weren’t
quick enough catching them rolling along the floor.
So, Monika, thank you, from the bottom of my heart,
for saving Honey, and in turn me. She has taught me
so much, has been there for me through everything
(and there’s been a lot), brought me immeasurable
joy and unconditional love. Thank you!!

Hi Fans,
Here are my “SUMMER SAFETY TIPS
FOR DOGS” just in time ‘cause the
weather is HEATING up:)
Follow my advice for a safe and happy
Summer for you and your bestie….
• Pets need lots of WATER— Every pet MUST have
access to lots of clean, cool water in the hot months. During
Summer your dog will drink more water than usual so it is a
good idea to have more than one container/bucket of water in
case one is knocked over. A great way to keep your

ice cubes in my mouth) or to give him a splash with the hose.
• Dogs NEED shade— If your dog is left outside during the day
he will need lots of shade areas/trees. If your yard is all
concrete he will need access to a veranda. Kid’s wading pools
make a great area for your pet to cool off in! - I love mine!

die in a short time from heat exhaustion. HEATSTROKE is an
emergency! If your dog has become heat stressed cover with
a cool, wet towel. He needs to go to the vet — NOW!!!
• NEVER walk your dog on a hot day! Dogs look forward to
exercise but make sure that you do it either very early in the
morning or wait until the sun goes down. Also if you feel the
heat from the concrete footpaths and roads on a hot day
imagine how hot it is on the unprotected pads of your dog’s
feet! Young and older dogs feel the heat more. Also over-
weight dogs, short nosed dogs like Pugs, Boxers etc, dogs
with thick dark coats, dehydrated dogs and sick dogs!
• Doggies do get SUNBURNT too! Can you believe it, they do!
White or light coloured dogs need sunscreen (available from
pet supply stores or from your vet ) on their nose and the tips
of their ears as they can easily sunburn and sunburn hurts.
• Pools can be DANGEROUS for dogs— NEVER leave your
doggie unsupervised in/near a pool. What if he falls in and

Four legged friends are the
BEST workout buddies!
I have always really enjoyed keeping fit in the great outdoors,
whether that be going for a hike with friends, doing water sports,
or even just kicking the footy around. But I discovered years ago
that my perfect workout buddy is a four legged one – no offence to
my two-legged mates! This is because they are always excited,
always available, and always rearing to go. And most importantly,
they experience such pure, unadulterated joy from being active.
My first four-legged workout buddy: In 2011 we welcomed
an active German Shepherd into our lives. Sammy became my best
four-legged friend, and you could say that we were truly a bonded pair!
We enjoyed each other’s company exploring the outdoors, and staying
fit and healthy in the process. We often ran on beautiful bush trails,
spent days at dog-friendly beaches from Wollongong to the Central
coast, and played ball at countless off-leash dog parks.
Sammy was always keen for exercise! Even when I was tired or
grumpy after a bad day at the office, she, tail wagging madly, would
stare at me with a look that said, "What are we doing tonight, Dad?"
She was like one, big, hairy stress reliever! Her enthusiasm was
infectious and instantly recharged me.
Sammy is still my best friend. I wear her ashes in a small cylinder around
my neck, and she accompanies me everywhere I go, including to Written by: Bas de Leeuw
Monika’s every Friday afternoon.
Running with rescue dogs is super fun : I still
love staying active, which means volunteering at Monika’s is
a fantastic way to get the blood pumping while helping
rescue dogs. They are incredibly keen to get out for a brisk
walk or a run, and I can’t help but be touched by their
excitement as they hammer along, tongues flopping out,
enjoying the world beyond their kennels. Afterwards, they’ll
happily sit by my side and gratefully accept a drink, pat and a
massage. And yes, occasionally they give me a sloppy kiss!
A little story about some of Monika’s running
buddies waiting to meet you at Ingleside
ATTICUS is a sweet 2 year old Labrador x Mastiff who loves
a brisk walk, especially off road! If there’s a mud puddle,
lookout, he’s going to plonk in it! As a precaution, he wears a
muzzle because he can be reactive to other dogs. When we
relax we read together DoggieRescue magazine—he likes to
look at his photos! Sponsor: “ Good Luck!” Julie McCann

In a nutshell, active dogs help
us lead a happy, healthy life
If you adopt an active dog, you’ll be
blessed with hours of pure enjoyment
as you walk, run, hike, throw balls and
play tug of war. It’s such a fun way to
keep fit, and you’ll have a keen, loyal,
appreciative workout buddy.
If you are not in a position to adopt,
please consider volunteering to walk
an active dog at Monika’s. Not only
will you enjoy the experience, but
you’ll be giving a beautiful dog some
much-needed exercise, as well as
some important time out of their
kennel. As a bonus, you’ll get your
heart pumping from fitness AND fun!

Interview with Rex Howard, Sunday 29 Sept, at his residence
“ HEY BABY, WANNA GET UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH ME?” REX (aka Junior)
If I wasn’t me I’d like to be: a food taster at a 5 star When I heard I was to star in DoggieRescue
steak house so I could eat all day and never have to magazine I: looked up my calendar of running events,
prowl around the dinner table begging for what I know ball chasing and the chewing of my toy collection to see
I deserve when I could be available for this interview
My happiest moments are: when I am squashed into Food that makes me drool is: anything with the aroma

favourite running mate knowing he is working hard on My nickname is : “Beast”, reflecting the warped humour
the computer to buy more food and chewing toys of my co-dwelling sub-species
NOVEMBER 2019 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 33
I thought I would: let you know how difficult it is
being spoiled and loved by 6 people at home. I
don’t get enough “me time” of just lying on the
patio in the sun
It took a while but : I finally have this gang of
inferior same-residence sub-species dwellers
doing what I want (mostly)
My tail wags most when : I am released off
lead at the park and 5-10 of my buddies are there
ready to share their personal scent of the day
I often wonder : how my co-dwelling sub-
species cope with such inferior hearing and
smell. The way they deal with their sensory
deficiencies is quite impressive
It is a well known fact I have: a quadrupedal
mouth and love to eat at all times! I am the
bottomless pit of eating and expect a share of
my co-dweller’s dinner plates at all times
My favourite place in the world is: on the end
of the bed of the smallest co-dweller (most
nights) or the older mated pair whose bed gives
me more space (Sunday morning)
My greatest achievement is: keeping the
co-dwellers convinced that my want is their need
You should adopt a rescue dog because:
a dog like myself can rescue most families HI THERE! YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW ME—I’M STEVIE
I am so excited: when the co-dwellers say WONDER BUT YOU CAN CALL ME STEVIE! I was rescued by
“walk” and change shoes and clothes. Then I Monika early this year, after I was abandoned because the
know they mean it people who bought me from a pet shop discovered I had a
disability. You see, I have a condition called “hydrocephalus”
- commonly known as “water on the brain”. I’m on
medication to help reduce the fluid in my body. I circle to the
left at times, and my vision is poor, but I can see with my
heart. I can’t negotiate stairs, so I need a home where
someone is home with me and can keep me safe. I promise
to give you unconditional love in return!
I was sad that my first family didn’t want me, but I know there
must be a family out there that will love me for me. Monika
and the kennel hands who look after me say I’m a special
boy and all love me so I’m lucky to be here until my forever
family comes. I am even taken out on trips - I went to the
beach today and walked in sand! That stuff is messy lol!
I will always be a disability pup who needs extra care to keep
me clean and accept me with all my quirks. I’m still a bright
playful guy who loves people and life.
