First of all—DON’T PANIC!!!
If your cat has gone missing what
you’ll need is a plan of action.

When people go missing, rescue teams aren’t
sent out to wander aimlessly and hope they
strike it lucky. They form a search plan based
on known details and a profile of the lost
person’s behaviour. Finding a lost cat is no
different, so before starting your search, read
the following info and build a profile of your cat
to determine what its behaviour is likely to be.
Your search strategy will depend largely on
whether your cat is an indoor-only cat, or has
access to the outdoors some or all of the time.

If your cat is an indoor-only cat... If you’re searching for an outdoor cat?

When an indoor-only cat escapes into the unfamiliar When an outdoor cat disappears, it generally means

Dear people who surrender their pets, or whose pets become lost
and they never look for them...

Congratulations on your new job, your new marriage, your new baby, or your new apartment. Surely whatever it is
that has changed in your life is going to make you extremely happy. Too bad your lifelong companion and furry
friend through thick and thin won’t be there to experience it with you.“ The pound will find him a new home..” you
say to your friends.

Because you decided to surrender your
pet to a pound he will spend his days
alone, cowering in the corner of a cold
steel two-by-two-foot cage. While you’re
cooing at your baby (remember when
your cat was your baby?) or cuddling
your partner (remember how cute it used
to be when your cat shared a pillow with
you?), your cat will be huddled in a litter
box out of fear and uncertainty,
desperately wondering when you’ll come
back for him. Perhaps he became lost
and you never even looked for him?

The pound workers will pet him a little
when they have time, but there are so
many other cats in the same situation
and there just isn’t enough time to go around. Some people might come in to adopt a cat, but they’ll walk right by
yours because he’s timid and scared—even though he was so sweet in your home, where he felt safe.

Volunteers in the community will work tirelessly to network your cat’s picture on Facebook and Twitter, along with
his sad story about the person who heartlessly dumped him and how he deserves to get out and have a second
chance in life. They will lose sleep worrying over your cat and spend hours trying to get him out of the pound and
hope that a rescue group has enough room to fit him in, and even offer their own money to help with costs.
Of course it’s not your cat’s fault that he’s there. He is a great cat, but even the greatest cats don’t always make it
out of a pound alive. If he’s lucky, your cat will find a new home with someone who felt sorry for him, and with that,
is a better person than you’ll ever be. If your cat is lucky enough to find a new home, it will be his forever home—
unlike the home you gave him, which lasted only until circumstances changed and he wasn’t a priority anymore.
But if he’s not one of the lucky few, he’ll never know another home. Or even another day .. And if we fail to get him
out in time, we’ll cry as though he were our own but you will have moved on and never even think of what
happened to the pet you left behind who loved and trusted you. Or the cat who was lost but never found because
you never even rang the pound to see if he was there—did you?

Why are rabbits ears so long?

A rabbit’s ears serve two functions.
• First – they help the animal to monitor it’s environment and detect
predators. Their ears can be rotated 270 degrees to help detect the source
of a sound, and can revolve independently to monitor different noises.

• Second, they assist in thermoregulation. A rabbit’s ears contain an
extensive network of blood vessels that provide a large surface area for
heat exchange. These vessels swell (vasodilation) when the rabbit is hot
to help them cool down, and contract (vasoconstriction) when it is cool to
conserve heat. Below you can see Lovebug’s ears and the vessels in By Tricia Curran
them. What a great little model!

‘Ears some other interesting facts….

• Did you know you should NEVER lift a rabbit by
its ears? Handling in this manner is not only cruel
as a rabbits ears are very sensitive but can injure
the ear permanently. When lifting a rabbit place
one hand under its front legs and the other under
its bottom and then lift.

• Lop eared bunnies ears are not as effective at
cooling as ears that stand up straight and for this
reason you do not see wild rabbits with lop ears.
The owners of lop eared rabbits need to be extra
careful with their rabbit’s exposure to heat.

• A rabbit will get to know its own name and react
when it hears you say it. If you want to train your
rabbit it is advisable to always call your rabbit by
the same name and avoid confusing nicknames.

Please remember rabbits are not cheap, easy starter
pets for children but have complex needs. More
