Dear Readers,

We have started the year with some amazing
adoptions with 47 dogs and 12 cats being adopted
in the last 30 days. About 45% of dog adoptions
were mature dogs. I am so excited to find people
out there who care about our little mature fellows
and appreciate how much pleasure and joy they
bring to a family without having all the “teething
problems” associated with younger pets.

These dogs and cats are with their family for Roses are red, violets are blue,

happiness and laughter to share! So come with your

of course be available as well.

Little Betty, our Maltese girl who is featured with me, was
one of the lucky mature ladies who now has a forever
home this Valentine’s Day. We have many other gentle,
easy mature dogs who are ideal for new pet owners.

I went out to rescue a dog that day, to give him a really good life.
To take him away from the life that he led and free him from trouble and strife!

I thought I would do him a favour and be a good person to him...
And go do my bit for the county, I didn’t go out on a whim.

But what do you think really did happen the day that I did my good deed?
I discovered a love that I’d dreamed of and fulfilled in myself a strong need.

I now have a dog that I care for, I see things that I need to see.
That lovely dog that I rescued….really ended up rescuing ME!

My beautiful little Mighty adopted Hello Fans,
coming up to ten years ago this April!
At 14 years of age he is now on heart I did a very naughty thing ( I can’t tell you,
medication and hasn't got much longer left, it was really gross ) but both Mum and
but he will forever be my first baby. Candy Dad were so angry with me. They didn’t
shout at me in fact they went quiet….That
“ TUESDAY ” was when I knew I had been really bad
and that they would not love me anymore.

I ran away from home. I ran and I ran and...I ran. I ran until I was
well and truly lost. I was so very frightened. Then I ran across a road
and a car almost hit me. The driver yelled out his car at me “Stupid
dog!” I started to whine...and shake, my tail was between my legs. I
wanted to go home. I wanted my Mum and Dad but they no longer
loved me. I had no home. The next thing I knew a lady had kneeled
down and put her hand on my collar. She read my tag as she gently
patted and talked quietly to me. I heard her say “I have found a little
dog called Chippy. Yes, I will stay with him until you can get here!”
She was talking to Mum or Dad on her phone!!!

It seemed no time at all until Mum and Dad arrived in their car. Dad
scooped me up into his arms and they were BOTH crying. After
thanking the lady, we got into the car and went home. Yes H.O.M.E.
You see just because Mum and Dad got angry with me did not mean
they no longer loved me, I know that now. Parents sometimes get
angry ( especially if doggies do a big wee wee in the middle of their
bed ) and upset but if they did not, why how would we ever learn
right from wrong? I have learnt my lesson and I will never, ever run
away again—how could I ever have doubted how loved and special I
am? I am the very best and most loved doggie in the world— I know
‘cause my Mummy just told me!!! C/U Chips

I wish I had a
family to love

dogs, people, food and smells. It is SCARY
but when they cuddle up together these
dogs have each other and that is what love
is all about. That strong bond nothing can
break. When dogs come into Doggie
Rescue’s care as a pair we don’t separate
them. While this is the decent thing to do it
also inhibits their adoption chances. TWO
dogs are so much harder and do take far
longer to rehome than ONE!

SO, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF
ADOPTING A BONDED PAIR?

• The bonus with adopting a pair of bonded Angelique and Bert

‘hang out’ together whilst you work
during the day and snuggle together at
night. It is a fact too that, if you can, it is
far better to be a two dog family as dogs
benefit from the companionship of
another dog. So adopting a pair is really
a win, win situation for both the doggies
and their human family.

ONE LONELY HEART SEARCHING… 1

Hello Readers,

You want a puppy? Aw, come on. Aren’t you a little more
discriminating? Pets, like fine wine, improve with age.
When I think about all the dumb things I did as a puppy, I
just want to howl with embarrassment! But now I’m older
and wiser. I may be a little slower, but I’m also smarter and
calmer and less likely to drive you crazy. I’m ready to be
your friend and bed-mate, to share long walks and
evenings in front of the fire. I’ll romp like a puppy some-
times, but not all the time. Believe me, that’s something
you’ll appreciate at three in the morning. So go check out
the puppies, and then, when you’re ready for a mature
relationship, come back to me. It took me seven years to
get this sweet and I’ve got a lot of love to give. Please
consider adopting me. Love from Axle.

On these 2 pages we have 20 ‘mature doggies’, some of whom have been waiting a long time for a home!

“ Finn is truly WE FELL IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT WITH

him!” Hiranya By Hiranya Anderson

Hello Readers, Hiranya (with ex foster girl
Star) & Anika and Finn
We thought we already had an
enriched life, and then our beloved Mr.
Finn galloped in and turned it upside
down with laughter and mayhem. We
cannot imagine life without Finn whom
we have a variety of names for –
Finnegan, Finston, Mr McFinnus and
so on. He laughs back and wags his
tail in glee whenever we address him
thus. He knows he is loved and
adored.

I first met Finn after a stint of
Volunteering at Doggie Rescue in
August 2014. Macquarie University
allows Staff 2 volunteering days per
year and I chose to do it at DR. I spent
the day there assisting with admin
work and walking the dogs. As a result
of that wonderful experience I decided
to foster and asked to meet the
saddest ‘long termer’ there. The lovely
lass who was harnessing the dogs
brought out Finn. She said Finn was
depressed as his kennel buddies kept
getting adopted and he kept getting left
behind. He was reluctant to walk and
was sad. So I cuddled and chatted with
him for awhile and then carried him
and encouraged him on a little walk.
After my daughter Anika met him we
decided he was the dog we
wanted to foster.

I love, you trust—It’s a great combination

WHEN KITTENS ARE Featuring Dr.
Deidre Clack
HAVING KITTENS from...

Cats breed seasonally in the warmer months of the year The Cottage
between November and April (which is known as the ‘kitten Animal Hospital
season’) inundating pounds and shelters with pregnant 16 Ross St,
cats, or mothers with tiny kittens, many of whom are PARRAMATTA.
newborn. As pounds reach capacity and rescuers strive to NSW. 2150
save as many as possible from the euthanasia awaiting
them the emotional stress is simply overwhelming. Ph: 9890 7220

www.cottageanimalhospital.com

The saddest of all abandonments are the kittens who
are dumped pregnant or with their kittens. Some
female kittens can come on heat at just 4 months and
give birth as young as 7 months. A kitten that age is
neither physically nor mentally prepared to give birth,
let alone be a mother and not only can their life can be
endangered, they are adding another 4-8 kittens to the
millions of unwanted cats who need homes.

Blacktown Animal Holding Facility recently had this little
tabby girl brought in. Her age was assessed as 6-8
months and she had a one day old kitten. Originally
she had given birth to two kittens but she was unable to
cope with the stress of birth/newborn kittens and one of
her babies died. Sadly this happens with some scared
young mums and a luckily the pound volunteers were
able to find a surrogate mother for her surviving kitten.

Did you know? One female cat can have up to 40
kittens a year leaving little wonder why over 17,000
cats /kittens are euthanized annually in NSW alone by
pounds and the RSPCA, with only 3% of the total of
impounded cats/kittens being claimed by their owners.

If we are to stem the flood of unwanted kittens, who are born only to die a few weeks later because there are
not enough homes for them, we need to promote desexing. Every additional cat desexed has a direct and
positive impact which results in less unwanted kittens. Need advice on desexing your pet? Please call us.

THE Cottage Animal Hospital is a venture set up and run by Dr. Deirdre
Clack BVSc (hons) and Monika’s DoggieRescue.
