• “ LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH ” - A NO-KILL SHELTER

Dear Readers

Everyone who meets Grayson (p41) is Monika & Grayson
enthralled by him – dapper, demure, enjoy a cuddle
so cuddly and engaging with people!
He charms everyone off their feet!
Why is he here? Grayson is lucky to
be alive. He was dragging himself
around after a suspected car accident,
surviving on dog biscuits from the
family who found him. He came in with
nerve damage and incontinence. He
stayed at our vets to see if he would
regain some control as nerves heal
slowly but unfortunately this did not
happen. We needed to amputate part
of his tail to stop him dragging it and
stop the urine scalding. Grayson has
recovered well but is looking for a
committed family willing to put nappies
on him and ensure he stays clean.
Other than that he is just the sweetest
cat. You could not ask for better!

In this issue we have announced our winners for the 2019 calendar,
which will be out soon. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you all

• • • feature “ SCARLET ” SEARCHING FOR A FOSTER HOME

SCARLET

A BRAVE GIRL DEFYING THE ODDS

BACKGROUND 31ST AUGUST DoggieRescue was
contacted by a pound with a 9 year old ‘RESCUE ONLY’
Boxer cross with a swelling on one foot. The reports from
the pound were that this dog had a beautiful nature and
adored hugs. We decided to give her a chance and Scarlet
( as we called her ) was rescued.

SCARLET’S PROGNOSIS She went immediately to our
vet who on examination found Scarlet was underweight and
reluctant to sit. She was found to have some major arthritic
changes in her spine that gave her pain. We biopsied the
mass on her foot and results were the worst we could have
expected. She had osteosarcoma, an aggressive, very
painful cancer that spreads quickly through the body and
can result in spontaneous fractures at the site. The
prognosis was that if we did nothing Scarlet might have just
a few short, painful weeks or months to live but with total
leg amputation and chemo she might get up to 12 months
on average, perhaps even more of pain free life. Living at
the shelter in a kennel situation we could not even consider
any options that might give her more time. We started
desperately to look for a caring foster home but each day
the foot grew more painful and the tumour larger.

SURGERY: 1ST OCTOBER Scarlet had little
time left with the way the tumour was growing.
We had no foster home for her as yet but we
needed to act quickly before it was too late.
Everyone who has met her says what a
gorgeous loving dog she is and deserves a
chance. We could not let her go and to give her
any chance amputation was the only option.

Scarlet is pictured at The Cottage Animal Hospital with vet nurse
Courtney after her big operation and this brave girl is still smiling!

NOVEMBER 2018 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 15

I first met Scarlet while volunteering at DoggieRescue
and immediately fell in love with her. While I could not
adopt or foster her I decided I would become one of
her sponsors.

When my husband Richard and I visited Scarlet after
her operation at The Cottage Animal Hospital at
Parramatta in October we realized how courageous
she is. Tail wagging, she hobbled towards us in the
consultation room -– familiar faces in a strange
environment: so happy despite the disability of losing
a leg. After a cuddle she nosed the pocket where she
knows I keep her treats and after she settled I gave
her a brush. The vet nurses told us Scarlet adapted
remarkably well to her new way of walking and quickly
wanted to go outside to the toilet which she can
manage unassisted. She also demonstrated at
hospital that she could get on with cats! We already
knew she loved people and other dogs and is not
bothered by cars. Scarlet is remarkable for all that she “ Scarlet is adorable and her love and positive
has been through.
spirit will reward you immeasurably if you open
Sponsors: Antonette and Richard Brisland your heart to her. Please consider fostering her.”

CLICK HERE TO SEE VIDEO ON SCARLET’S PROGRESS
CHEMO STARTED FRIDAY 12TH OCTOBER
Scarlet commenced chemotherapy at Collaroy Vet
Hospital. She experienced the same side effects
as humans undergoing this treatment and is
managing it bravely.

THE SEARCH FOR A FOSTER HOME What
Scarlet needs is a home where someone is around
a lot of the time and she might need help to get out
for toilet breaks. A flat area is best for her. She
needs someone who is comfortable lifting 20kg
and preferably with a nursing or medical back-
ground to be able to monitor her demeanour and
recognise when things are not right. Regular vet
trips to a northern beaches vet are also needed.

If you can provide Foster Care to Scarlet in
a home with a yard, please fill out the form at
http://www.doggierescue.com/forms.htm
or phone Monika on 0429 044 484 for more
details on Scarlet.

Unable to foster Scarlet but like to help? Please consider making a donation toward her surgery and
chemo costs. Thank you from Scarlet and Monika https://give.everydayhero.com/au/monika-8

could go for a quiet sniff. Old dogs ( every doggie ) loves to go for

then, some dogs always like to play no matter what their age.
Perhaps not running around the yard barking and jumping with a
soccer ball but gentle games with a squeaky toy or a soft ball.

Why not sit on the lounge with your doggie while you play with a

WE RESCUED LUPIN, By Nicole & Dave Warner

AND SHE RESCUED
US RIGHT BACK!

Hello Readers,

Lupin came in to our lives 3 years ago
when we went to DoggieRescue to find
a loving, older dog. We have experience
in rescues and always seek older dogs
because we know it can be harder for
them to be placed. All dogs deserve an
equal chance to have a loving, forever
family.

Lupin won us over as she was
demonstrative, loving and tried so hard.
The fact that she was 10 years old and
toothless, sealed the deal.

From day one she slept with

our son and is perfect! Toilet “ When we adopt an animal it's about them, not us…
trained, energetic, loving and a
wonderful family member and to rescue a dog you heal their broken heart and many

MEET ‘ CHEEKY PEEKY ’

19 YEARS YOUNG! Cheeky &
bestie Tonks

Back in 2004 I was a volunteer at Doggie
Rescue. .and I met ‘Piki’… a sad dog with
a skin condition that got bullied. I called
him Peeky and so Cheeky Peeky it was…

Through his medical records we found out he
was 5 years old...so next February he will be
20 year of age. He has the qualities of a
gentleman. I had my final child and Cheeky
welcomed him and protected him and to this
day does a 'head count' of family members.

“ This boy is an Angel and you could
offer us 20 million dollars and it
would be no deal. I'm so grateful to
Monika for seeing the beauty in the
discarded in society.” Nicole

When you are looking to add a new fur kid
to your family why not give a homeless
senior dog a chance, they have so much
love to give..

Like Mother, Like
Daughter – Indigo
& Snowflake

I remember the Saturday Indigo
arrived at Doggie Rescue, Indigo
was heavily pregnant, and unsure
of where she was. She was bathed,
processed and put into foster care so
she would have a safe space to have
her pups. Six puppies arrived at the
beginning of July: Chilly (the only male),
Mittens, Beanie, Stormy, Raindrop and
our last girl Snowflake. We watched
them grow into playful little puppies who PHOTOS BY:
delighted everyone who saw them and TOVAH LEVITAS
one by one they were adopted.

Indigo has been a fantastic mother and is now very bonded to little
Snowflake, so we would like to see them find a home together. It’s time
for Indigo to find a family who will adore her and teach her how to be a
young dog. She wants cuddles, love and to play. If you have space in
your heart for two sweet girls, they will love you back tenfold.

These girls need a home with a yard
as they love to run around together,
they would be good with older kids
who will play with them. Please
consider this bonded pair for your
new family members, we would love
to see them settled in a home together.

• ADOPTION UPDATE FEATURE WHERE IS MADDEN NOW? By Trevor Connell

“ MADDEN ”

THE SWEETEST HEARTMELTER
I HAVE EVER MET!

BACKGROUND: My wife and I
have lost our old red Kelpie Akira
( 16 years ) last year through our
own decision regarding quality of
life. I had adopted her at 1year
after her horrible previous owner
beat her and left her for dead. At
the end she was fading away quite
quickly and rather than watch her
degrade beyond help we assisted
her to the rainbow bridge.

It was a horrible decision, but
the right one we feel. We were
contemplating finding another
rescue dog and couldn’t decide on
getting a puppy or older dog when
Madden ( now affectionately known
as Mr Fox ) presented himself on
the DoggieRescue website. He
was 16 years of age and homeless.

Madden’s face reminded me of my
old girl Akira and after reading his
story of abandonment we made the
drive to Sydney that afternoon and
brought him home as no dog
should ever be alone in their final
years.

Knowing we would be
heartbroken if we knew Akira
was lost to us and left in a
shelter we decided that although
Madden’s time with us will be short,
we will do our best to make sure it
is as peaceful and loving as we can
make it. Which will be very easy as
he is the sweetest little heart
melter I have ever met.

NOVEMBER 2018 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 29

Madden has made himself at
home and prances around after
the cats and happily greets us at
the gate everyday after work. The
steps were a bit much for him so
I built a ramp to the yard ( see
picture at left ). He’s a little
trooper.

Kind regards,
Trevor and Jessica Connell.

It has been the best
decision we have ever
made to adopt him and our
little Mr Fox has made us
“We actually found out that Madden is 17 and a bit
years—so super, super senior!” Trevor incredibly happy. ”
