DON’T BUY FROM A PET SHOP
ADOPT FROM A POUND!

Give a homeless CAT/KITTEN a forever home

Good news from the BAHF
with another happy adoption!

Kevin and Jenny came to
adopt one cat but when they
found out Megs had lived with
Gizmo previously, and that
they had been surrendered to
BAHF together they asked to
meet him. Kevin said "we
don't separate families, we
keep them together" so they
adopted them both. How
good is that?

Nothing beats the joy of
actually being able to save
a cat’s life and give them a
forever home. Come and
meet your next family
member at Blacktown
Animal Holding Facility.

ADDICTED TO CATS

One cat is no trouble,
and two are so funny,
The third one is easy,
the fourth one's a honey
The fifth is delightful,
the sixth one's a breeze.
You find you can live with
a houseful, with ease.
So how 'bout another?
Would you really dare?
They're really quite easy,
but Oh Lord, the hair!

PEBBLES NEEDS A PLACE
TO CALL HOME!

“Old age comes to us all. In the pound system I
have seen cats surrendered when their elderly
owner passes away or enters aged care. Over-
all its just a sad situation for the elderly person
and their beloved pet which has for years been
a loyal companion to someone who would have
lived alone if not for them.” Jeanette AWL

Some families simply don’t think twice at
dropping Mum or Dad’s best friend at the local
shelter but there are people who do care and
go that extra mile to ensure the cat (or dog )
has a second chance to find another family
to love. Today I happened upon one such
person. While at the vet a lady asked could she
place a flyer up in the waiting room. We spoke
about the situation.

Pebbles Mum’s daughter was going from vet to
vet in the area placing up her poster in the
hope that someone will love Pebbles like her
Mum does. She told me that Pebbles will not
be surrendered to a pound and is still living in
the family home until it is sold but she really
needs a home with people to love.

CAN YOU OFFER PEBBLES A LOVING HOME? Pebbles is 12 years young and
has been a friend to a senior lady who has now entered aged care and as in many of the
facilities for the aged, pets are not part of the life style and must be left behind. Pebbles poster
tells me that she is well mannered, house trained and most importantly she has a lovely caring
nature. Pebbles is very relaxed & well behaved, in good health, micro chipped & desexed.
Pebbles wants everyone to know that she would be very grateful to find a loving home where
she can be safe inside and her first priority is to give her new parent/s lots of love. It is not
known if Pebbles is accepting of other cats at this stage.

Everyone…its time to rally again and help another senior girl find that home she deserves in her twilight
years. Please contact Jeanette if you are able to give Pebbles a safe home to spend her twilight years in.

WHAT IS A POUND?

Compiled by Corinne Daw

I googled “what is a pound?” and what came up the most was that a pound is a place for LOST AND FOUND
PETS. A place where they are cared for until they are claimed and reunited with their owners but in reality the fact is
that pounds are holding facilities responsible for the LIFE OR DEATH of 1,000’s of our most vulnerable animals.
There is a huge RESPONSIBILITY of the Council and the Manager/Staff of each pound for the level of CARE,
COMPASSION and EMPATHY given to these abandoned pets... and to their ultimate fate.

The basic purpose of the Code of Practice for the HOW IMPORTANT
Management of Dogs and Cats in Shelters and IS THIS CAT’S
Pounds is to support the welfare of those animals LEVEL OF CARE
which may require temporary housing pending TO YOU?
release to their owners or, if unclaimed, a decision
on rehousing. The Code exists to help ensure that
a person reclaiming his or her lost pet from a pound
finds the animal healthy and sound. The Code does
this by specifying the minimum requirements for
staff of establishments, minimum husbandry
conditions including nutrition and vaccination
requirements, and minimum hygiene, security,
exercise and housing requirements.

Recently 20 cats ( some pregnant, others lactating mothers with tiny kittens ) and many healthy young
kittens were euthanized in the one day at a local pound. For horrified Rescuers this was the last resort.

These questions need to be asked: High on the list as a requirement for all pounds is…

• WHY IS THERE SUCH A WIDE DISPARITY Staff training - ensuring ALL staff members have a baseline
OF CARE IN DIFFERENT POUNDS? standard of training and demonstrate the capacity to have
empathy towards animals. There should be a transparent level
• A NATIONWIDE SURVEY SHOWED THAT of engagement with the community (including animal welfare/
25% OF DOGS AND 56% OF CATS WHO rescue groups) that is courteous and polite at all times.
ENTER AUSTRALIA’S POUNDS EACH
YEAR ARE KILLED. WHY IS THAT? POUND - SHELTER - ADOPTION

• SHOULD POUNDS BE DOING MORE
TO IMPLEMENT PROGRAMS AND
SERVICES TO SAVE LIVES?

• IN EVERY POUND ARE HYGIENE &
CLEANLINESS PRACTICES PUT IN
PLACE TO ENSURE THE NON
TRANSFERRAL OF CONTAGIOUS
DISEASES?

• IS IT OKAY TO EXPECT RESCUERS TO
TAKE MOST OF THE RESPONSIBILITY
FOR REHOMING?

• DO ALL COUNCILS OFFER PROGRAMS
SUCH AS FREE AND SUBSIDISED
DESEXING AND MICRO CHIPPING?

• DO POUNDS USE THE POWER OF
SOCIAL MEDIA ENOUGH TO SAVE/
ADOPT/SPREAD THE WORD?

• MANY AUSTRALIAN POUNDS TAKE Domino ( above ) went from being a skinny, terrified and
NO PROACTIVE MEASURES TO abandoned kitten to a little purr machine. The happiest days
REUNITE LOST PETS WITH THEIR are when an unwanted stray turns into a pet—it’s magic!!!!
OWNERS . WHY IS THAT?
WORKING TOWARDS NO-KILL: For a LOST/ABANDONDED/
• EUTHENASIA - IS IT THE NORM AFTER SURRENDERED pet ( many of whom are young and healthy )
THE HOLDING PERIOD IS ENDED …. going to a Pound should not mean a death sentence.
OR THE VERY LAST RESORT?
“Public awareness and expectations have changed a lot in the
“Councils stand behind tired old cliches for last decade. Communities no longer want our pounds and
killing, while failing to implement evidence-based shelters to act as an extension of garbage collection and
programs that save lives (like comprehensive disposal. They want pets to be respected, protected, treated,
adoption programs, medical and behavioural rehabilitated and given a second chance. No Kill is the aspiration
programs, proactively reuniting lost animals with of every pet-loving community.” Pet Rescue
