A TRIBUTE TO A DOG

George Graham Vest (1830-1904)
served as U.S. Senator from
Missouri from 1879 to 1903 and
became one of the leading orators

delightful speech is from an earlier
period in his life when he prac-
ticed law in a small Missouri town.
It was given in court while repre-
senting a man who sued another
for the killing of his dog. During
the trial, Vest ignored the testimo-

present a summation to the jury,
he made the following speech and

Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and
become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove
ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our
happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has,
he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may
be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their
knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice
when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

A Girl with

her old

friend….

Background: I first met Bear when he
arrived at DoggieRescue Shelter in
2016. He had lived outside as a guard
dog in his previous home and was not
easy to handle. Just the simple task
of putting on a lead or a harness was
a scary endeavour. But after a lot of
gentle bonding and getting to know
Bear he became my absolute “Even when Bear was adopted the first time I still felt that one day
favourite dog at the shelter! he would be living with my partner Luis and I.”

Two years ago I visited Bear in his
old home. It was a happy and a
sad feeling at the same time. It was
lovely to see him thrive in a home,
but it just didn’t seem right that he
wasn’t ours. Bear was then
returned to the shelter again, after
already spending more than three
years there, and it was fate. We
had to take him.

Despite being a sometimes grumpy,
stubborn, food-snob who can be
very picky with what he eats, Bear
is now very loved and spoilt, and he
will live out the rest of his life being
the centre of attention as he
deserves. Huskies just make the
best pets!

FEATURE Article A SPECIAL AND MUCH LOVED BOY CALLED ANGUS OWES HIS LIFE TO A FRIEND….

Can your

dog be a

life saver?

This month's article will be a little different, regular
readers will know I usually focus on a dog who has
Lexi captured my attention in a shelter full of special dogs.
This month I want to write about the dog who captured
saved my attention several years ago, who changed my world,
Angus’s who recently had a near death experience and how
life... another ex Monika's dog saved his life.

Angus is my Australian Terrier X, depending on which
piece of paperwork you refer to he's somewhere between
12-14 years old. He recently became extremely unwell
and required major surgery at Northside Emergency
Veterinary Service (NEVS) in Terrey Hills. During the
surgery there was a complication and he required a life
saving blood transfusion, I will be honest here - dog blood
donations isn't really something I'd ever thought about
until one saved Angus. This is where the story gets a little
special, it's very possible the blood donation that saved
Angus came from a Bull Arab X called Lexi, Lexi was a
DoggieRescue dog who attended lots of events with me
during her time at the shelter, her Mum also now
volunteers for the shelter regularly.

AUGUST 2022 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 27

While Angus slowly recovered from surgery and further complications (he doesn't
do things by halves my boy!) I started to look into canine blood donation, speaking
to Lexi's Mum and also Angus's vet Dr Joshua Bool (NEVS) it became clear this
was something most people weren't aware was even possible! So let's start with
the basics, what are the requirements of a dog to be considered to give blood?

• 1-8 years old
• Over 25kg
• Have a good temperament
• Be up to date with deworming (including heartworm) and vaccinations
Written by:
• Never received blood donation

• Not on any medications Jen Barbour

SENIOR DOGS NEED
HOMES TOO...

Maria Dallwitz
(Harnessing Volunteer).

“ A distinguished
gentleman. If there was
one sentence that sums
Theo up it would be this.
Full of joy, well mannered
and beautifully tempered
Theo is nothing but charm
wrapped up in a coat of
chocolate coloured fur.”

He has proven to be a favourite
among walkers, with many
returning back from their time
together explaining how well
behaved he is. Or perhaps how
gentle he is or how joyful he
was to spend time with. It
seems his charm readily wears
off on them too, not surprisingly.
Always keen for stroll he’ll take any opportunity
to lean in for a cuddle or a gentle stroking of his
fur along the way. Being an older boy, and one
that may have unfortunately had his fair share of
sleeping on hard surfaces, he enjoys his elbows
being massaged with coconut oil in order to
soften the skin that has hardened over time. He
has no complaints of this and is happy to let you
do what you need to do, relishing the praise he
receives when the task is done.

Theo like any of the DR dogs is so deserving of
a loving family to call his own. Preferably a
family that will include him in their adventures,
dote on him and provide him with a soft bed to
rest in. And what he will give you in return will be
a kind soul to find comfort in, companionship
and likely more affection than one’s used to,
because to be honest he really does just love to
love. And how wonderful is that.

M EM O R I A L S “ R av e n, a v e r y br av e g i r l t o t he e nd. . . ”

Raven, an 8 year old sweet natured Rotty X came from the
pound. She was growly and grumpy when the pound vet
tried to examine her. She reportedly had some hip issues.
Upon examination we soon learnt that she most likely had
a bone cancer called osteosarcoma, a painful aggressive
cancer that is common in Rotties, in her left leg.

Treatment of bone tumours usually involves amputation
and chemotherapy. This would probably have given her
some two years of life. In her case, she had very arthritic
hip joints so it was not a favourable option. Additionally she
had a high grade mammary tumour which was removed
with dirty margins – an independent problem. We decided
that palliative care was the kindest option for her and were
so lucky to find a foster home for Raven to spend her
remaining months with lots of spoiling and rest.

Sweet Raven left us today and left all her pain behind. She
was a very lucky girl who had almost 12 months in
palliative care. The best thing was she had an amazing
foster family, Eimear and Stephen willing to care for her
and see things through to the end even when the going got
tough. Thank you guys, you have so much care strength.
The pain in her leg got worse as despite pain meds she In pain and misery,
still did not like anyone touching her legs.
Before I lost all dignity,

bone in her leg was just honeycomb and would break at You set me free,

Below is a letter from compassionate people who help in the way they can and also realise when they
are too old to manage pets themselves.... Thank you Judith for your kind donation.

Dear Monika,

The donation I sent was a thank you for our little dog we acquired from your
Drummoyne premises some 15 or 16 years ago. Unfortunately we had to put
him down a couple of years ago – I was up to the vet with him weekly - and
we still miss him. He was always great company and could be a bit of a
wanderer, but only to friends nearby. In our previous abode in Roseville he
visited a couple of properties who were always pleased to see him. We
moved into an Over-50’s apartment block in Pymble some 8 years ago. There
was another dog in the unit next door – a big black dog - and they were great
mates.

Unfortunately, age has caught up with us, so owning another dog is a not
possible. But thank you, for a very special and well-loved little dog. We will
always have fond memories of him. Thank you, Judith

RIP dear Jack nee Toddy, King of the toy mountain and will be running free at the rainbow bridge. His family
donated dentastix’s to the doggies on behalf of their beautiful boy Jack .

LOVE ANIMALS? MEET LIKE MINDED PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER...

Yesterday I went to Monika’s DoggieRescue in Ingleside (as I do often - I live in a unit and can’t have a dog, so I get
my pooch fix up there ). I walk dogs that have been saved from death row or rescued from people that shouldn’t have
animals. They had 27 beautiful Huskies all up for adoption (as a terrible human had over 80 in a small area on his
property where they were very neglected) so if you’re thinking of getting a pet, or would like to get your puppy fix,
head up and see the amazing volunteers. I know it makes my little one smile from ear to ear Oslow was such a
beautiful boy, so gentle with Maya and we can’t wait to go back again soon. Thanks, Byron DR Volunteer
