“ LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH ” - A NO-KILL SHELTER

Last month we had some amazing adoptions of our long
termers notably Crumpet, Chilli, Dakota and Casper our
longest term resident who was enjoying life with his
foster family until they finally decided to adopt!

Being spring it is allergy season for people and dogs
alike and Jen talks about our staffy breeds with little hair
on their underside that are prone to rashes and itchy
skin whilst Roland talks about puppies and the demands
they have on you – are you ready for the challenge?
Check his puppy needs list.

This month in Kidz Club we have amazingly generous
young people Orli and Oscar, who donated years of
pocket money just to help the dogs. Gorgeous Jester is
trying so hard to count it all (p22).

The dog’s primary sense is smell,

Here’s a few fun facts that illustrate this

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT PEYTON

“ I chose Peyton for this interview because like my
own staffy she has skin that is prone to allergies,
that short hair tendency to lie on their bellies in
the grass means they can develop rashes and
allergies to seeds in the garden!”
It's quite common for staffies to have allergies so
always watch your dog when introducing them to
new foods or environments. Peyton was very
gentle and interested in what was going on for the
photos we took, she is a very nervous creature so
we took things slow and spent lots of time building
a bond before we went out to take the photos.
She is quite social with other dogs, she really
likes to play with Poptart, they often go on walks
together, but she doesn't like dogs getting into her
face. She is spooked by sudden movements or
loud noises particularly trucks. She was watching
me closely while we were out, so she always knew
what I wanted from her. She will need a home

Puppies

Compiled by Roland Briefrel

It has never ceased to surprise me as an
observer of people and dogs, how many
humans feel they need to adopt a puppy when
they decide the time is right for dog ownership.
Whether it is arrogance, hubris, ignorance or
quite frankly stupidity, adopting a puppy is
actually hard work.

Very young puppies are so cute, it is hard to
imagine that within a few months, they will
graduate from their "I-just-want-to-please-you"
stage and enter their "You-can't-stop-me!"
stage. As with children, testing boundaries is a “ Your job is to keep the worst temptations out of your

So if you are thinking of getting a puppy there 3. It is essential to teach your pup to like people and

SEPTEMBER 2020 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 17

Although we love our puppies like children, they are
not children – they are baby dogs, and dogs do
things that their human family members often do
not understand! What is normal for a puppy and works
perfectly well within their canine family is often not such
a good fit once they are in their new forever home. So,
just because certain puppy behaviour is 'normal' in the
canine world that does not mean it is okay or that you
should not discourage it.

For example, many common puppy behaviours such as
biting/nipping, growling, chewing, whining when alone, Many puppies withdraw into themselves during the first
submissive urination, jumping up to lick faces (to name few days and may sleep more than usual and/or lose
but a few), are perfectly normal for a dog - but they can their appetite.... they may even lull you into thinking that
cause havoc in your home. It is important to let you they are models of immaculate behaviour. BUT, this is

Because he's a tiny baby and leaving his mother and also worth knowing that many puppies are especially

(in the nicest possible way of course!) people, pets, pack animals they instinctively know the importance of
smells, sounds etc. is very scary and traumatic for him. staying in a group when their survival is at stake. But
allowing 'velcro-puppy' syndrome can lead to separation
anxiety and other behaviour issues, so it is important to
get the balance of love and attention and alone-time
right.

It is natural for a pup to be a little anxious and scared.
There are a huge number of different dog breeds, and a
potentially infinite combination of mix breed options.
Each breed was designed with a specific purpose in
mind and has its own set of strengths and weaknesses.
Certain puppy behaviours are more obvious in some
breeds than others. For example, puppies from the herd-
ing breeds tend to be more stubborn about, and dedi-
cated to, biting and nipping. Terriers that were originally
bred to hunt vermin can be incredible 'diggers'. Grey-
hounds cannot resist chasing small, fast moving animals
(or objects).... and so on.

The more you know about your puppy's heritage the
easier it will be for you to understand their behaviour
and figure out how to reshape it in a way that will
keep you both happy.

This article is not designed to scare anyone away from thinking about adopting a puppy. In fact there are
probably as many opinions on puppy ownership/training as there are puppies! It is however, a reminder that
puppies are hard work and require your time and attention. Cuteness and pester power should not be the
sole determiners in puppy ownership – they are HARD work. Be reasonable in your expectations of them
and generous with the time you spend training them, or, consider an older dog.

HEY
& Exercise KIDS!

Do you have fun with your dog? My favourite type of
exercise is running on bush trails. It is so much more fun
with a dog that loves running. It is a wonderful feeling to
bound along the trails and be totally connected with a four
legged buddy. Dogs love to play & exercise with their
family. Seeing their pure joy when they see their favourite
toy or know they are going for a run is so special.

Monika’s DoggieRescue. Olive was my weekly running buddy
before she was adopted. We had a lovely weekly 8km circuit
with a stop at halfway for a drink and to share an apple ( see
photo at right). Atticus ( above photo ) is my walking buddy. He
loves hiking on bush trails and playing. He is waiting for a home.

But the very best thing of all...is having fun with your four
legged mate in the great Australian outdoors!

ADOPTION UPDATE

PEBBLES : 2015

FLASHBACK!

Hey Kids,

We have wanted a dog for ages but Mum said
we didn't have a big enough yard and we
already had enough animals. It seemed like
we were the only family in the neighbourhood
that didn't have a dog. One day in the summer
holidays Mum saw a post on Facebook about
volunteer walking the rescue dogs at Monika's
DoggieRescue and that we should totally do it.
We loved the idea. We went as often as we
could and we walked Pebbles 3 times, she
seemed to "adopt us" and every time she
looked at us like - are you taking me home this
time? In the end Mum couldn't resist that cute
little face and sad pleading eyes and surprised Check out
us one day by saying we should adopt her. my SMILE!

Pebbles was so happy to finally come home
with us and fitted straight in, she didn't care
that the yard isn't huge after all we have a
great dog park on our street and she gets to MEET OUR DOGGIE “PEBBLES”
go walkies 2-3 times every day and when we
are at home she loves to cuddle up on the
lounge or on our beds with us. She is just the I love taking Pebbles to different places on the weekend and
best dog ever and she loves us to death. cuddling up with her in bed in the morning before I have to get up
to go to school and the way she jumps all over us when we get
home in the afternoon because she is so excited to see us. We
love Pebbles so much. Charlotte and Gemma X0X0

OUR DOG PEBBLES
FASTFORWARD TO 2020
By Charlotte Asbridge
“ It’s a ruff

life chilling in Hi Everyone,
bed all day!”
This is Pebbles who we adopted in 2015 now after five years
of being a part of our family. I wrote the story above with my
sister for the KIDS CLUB PAGE of September 2015 magazine,
shortly after we adopted her. Pebbles has turned into the most
loving yet crazy dog we ever could ever have asked for!

SEPTEMBER 2020 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 27

This was one of the first photos taken of Pebbles with
me when we first adopted her. She has grown to be a
much more confident dog than when we first got her
and has almost no fears now. This is fantastic as
when we adopted her she was scared of almost
everything including walking into our house!

Pebbles favourite activities include sleeping in our
beds, running after the big doggies at dog parks,
exploring the beaches and bushes of the northern
beaches and going to PetO to pick out treats!

We love her chaotic energy and could not have
asked for a more perfect doggo to join our family!

LARGE CAR AND...HAVE A LOT OF FUN!

Hello Readers,

After the terror of the fires during Christmas and
New Year, and then the arrival of the COVID-19
virus early in 2020 the stress started to tell and I
needed a break but...I did not want to leave my
two dogs. I thought it would be difficult to find
suitable destinations to stay, but I was wrong! I
have included details of my trip away and also

Hi Everyone! When travelling with dogs there are a few
important things to remember…
I wanted to do a shout out in the magazine for

• When travelling with dogs it is a good idea to take
your own bedding (if your dog sleeps on your bed!)
and also covers for the lounge/seating area to make
sure that no dirty paw prints or dog hair remains
behind when you leave.

• It is also a good idea to google secure dog free

a break from the car to stretch their legs, relieve
themselves and have a drink of water.

• When leaving double check everything is spotless

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
WITH “ TOAST MOLONEY ”

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be :
a huge Doberman. In my mind,
I'm a huge dog that protects the
house, and I take my duties really
seriously. Honestly, I'm just happy
being me though.
When I heard I was to star in
DoggieRescue magazine I : did a
whole load of zoomies all over the
house.
It took a while but : I'm finally
starting to become more friendly
with other people and dogs. My
very best friends are Donnie who
is a large puppy (he lets me chase
him!), and Coco, who is nine and
very wise is teaching me to sniff

Food that makes me drool is:
lamb and abalone fancy dog treats
that my mum uses to bribe me to
be more social. I would do anything
for one! I also love chicken, sweet
potato, and all kinds of food. Once
we were out for dinner in Newtown
and the waiter snuck me a piece of
ham that was as big as my head!
My happiest moments are: I've
been kayaking, tagged along to
ceramics class, to the office, I go
out for lunch, and to Sydney Park
every day to play fetch, but my ADOPTED &
happiest moments are when we're LOVING LIFE!
snuggled up at home cuddling.
My nicknames are: Toasty Snack,
The Snack, and Snack Attack!
If love makes the world go round
them I’m : probably 99% love and
1% dog because I make my mum's
world go round for sure.
My favourite place in the world is:
A toss-up between mum's lap but
preferably... on my mum's lap,
while also in bed having cuddles.
It was a significant achievement
to : overcome some of my anxieties
about strangers!
My tail wags most when: we goof
around in the mornings! I like to get
my belly pats in before I start the
day, do some zoomies, and play
wrestle a little bit. My tail wags like

When Spring is in the air I: like to
run around in Sydney Park playing
