FROM MY DESK By Monika Biernacki

Monika with
Russell
Dear Readers,

Russell (pictured with me) is our beautiful cat cover
boy for July issue. He is so gentle and serene. We
are hoping that with time ticking away he will find his
forever home soon. He has been through enough.

In our cat feature Antonette focuses on dental care
for cats and looks at ways to slow down dental
disease. We catch up with George (nee Cornflake),
recently adopted, who spent a number of months
with us. Wow he has settled in quickly and looks so
content. Can you believe he is being clicker trained
like a dog? Read his story! Amazing!

Brothers Cottontail and Coconut have hopped onto
the cover of our rabbit section for some limelight
and Tricia this month explains about rabbits being
crepuscular (active in twilight) and the reason
behind this.

I was deeply humbled to receive the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to animal welfare but
excited to know that the work of DoggieRescue is recognised for saving lives at council pounds. Without you,
DoggieRescue would not be what it is today and I want to thank you all for your contributions and support.

Together we have saved more than 13,000 dogs, over 500 cats as well as rabbits and guinea pigs.

recently passed and is finding it hard to adjust atm.
She has a big build at 5.75kg and is in search of a
quiet forever home, with no other pets or children.
She is best suited to a single person or couple who
have lots of time to spoil her and help her overcome
her loss. Cosmo was known to be very affectionate
and loved to be the centre of attention with her
special person.

Cat’s Dental Care!

We’re spending more time with our cats. They’re on our laps or on our beds
more often during the colder seasons and we’re noticing their bad breaths. With
all the boutique types of wet food our cats are eating, more attention ought to
be paid to oral health. Tinned food makes cat’s teeth rot and their breath smell
yucky. And, it has to be said that for the average kitty, the most expensive vet
visits are for dental checkups and maintenance or corrective dental work.
By Antonette Diorio
Cats are very good at hiding pain -– to cats, if they show pain it’s a sign of CAT ADOPTION OFFICER

weakness and that makes them feel vulnerable. That’s why when we take our Antonette has her Certificate II
cats for their annual checkup and the vet has a look in kitty’s mouth, the vet can in Animal Care and Certificate
see the infection, or the rotting tooth or teeth, or tartar buildup when we didn’t III in Captive Animals.
have a clue. Of course, astute owners may notice their cat chewing on only one
side of their mouth, but this subtle sign is more likely missed.

Brushing your cat’s teeth is good if you can do it ( or teach them like this very clever fellow above!) , but
cats don’t tolerate this very well and if their mouth is sore already they are not going to let you get that
brush near the affected area. And, anyway, with everyone’s busy lifestyle how likely are we to brush our
cat’s teeth daily or regularly even if we could?

JULY 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE 7

In my opinion, and I say this to THE STAGES OF PERIDONTAL DISEASE
everyone who applies to adopt a cat
from Monika’s DoggieRescue when I
am assessing their applications and
talking to them about cat care, the
number one way of keeping your cat’s
teeth clean, preventing infection where
possible (unless there is an underlying
medical reason), reducing tartar
build-up, and avoiding expensive vet
treatments that include anesthetic,
removals and cleaning, is to feed
them a special dental biscuit.

All the good brands of oral biscuits are
available from your vet or specialty pet
stores. Cheaper brands are available
at grocery stores. They work in two
ways: as a mechanical brushing action
and as a mouthwash clean. When
your cat bites through the biscuit,
which is a little bit bigger than normal
dry food, the biscuit will hold its
shape. As the cat’s tooth goes through
the biscuit, it will brush bacteria off
the teeth. Also, the biscuits have
ingredients that are like a mouthwash,
helping to keep their breath clean.
There’s another product that your vet
is likely to recommend if you don’t
want to feed your cat an oral biscuit
one meal per day, and that’s a powder
that you sprinkle on your cat’s food
once a day. It combines with the saliva
to get rid of the bacteria on the teeth,
but in my opinion it’s easier and a
faster routine for you, to feed an oral
biscuit.

Next time you go to the vet, ask
your vet to show you how to check
your cat’s teeth for decay and tartar
build-up. You’ll be surprised to see
a fine red line between the teeth and
the gum – tartar -– if they haven’t
been having an oral biscuit.

Another option for keeping your cat’s
teeth clean is to feed raw bones, eg
chicken necks, which also can help OPEN WIDE!!!! This kitty proudly shows off his clean teeth
with tartar control. and it is easy to see that his mummy gives him oral biscuits!!!

“ George loves preying on and catching his favourite toy ‘Ribbon Fishy’ (now lovingly destroyed and to be
replaced already), often taking it out of his toy box and dropping it at our feet when he wants to play.” Emma
Hello Antonette, Monika and the team! We knew when we adopted George that he was going to
be a shy boy who needed lots of reassurance and love.
Jamie and I would like to give you an update on our After we got him home, he went straight under our bed
adopted feline friend, Cornflake, who now goes by the and didn’t come out for 24 hours (except to use his litter
name of George! trays in the ensuite).
He would let us softly stroke his
cheek, but would back up and
reposition himself in the centre
of the bed where we couldn’t
reach him when it became a bit
much. We left him alone and
visited every half an hour or so
to let him know we were there if
he needed. We were convinced
and prepared for George to be
the type of cat that never
wanted our attention or
affection - which would have
been okay with us as we just
wanted him to know he would
be safe and cared for.

JULY 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE 9

Day two of our adoption, we visited our newborn
niece in hospital and came home to an entirely
different cat. Jamie put his hand under the bed
and George responded by smooching, purring and
licking Jamie’s hand! He even rolled on his back
and offered his tummy for pats before happily
coming out to (tentatively) explore his new bed-
room. Ever since, George has been one happy boy!

George now greets our hand with his nose and we
*boop* hello, he then asks for a cheek rub, and
lastly does what we now call a “floor flop” where he
rolls onto his back, stretches out and requests a
tummy tickle. We can’t believe he has progressed
this far; from the incredibly shy, timid cat at the
shelter who didn’t want our pats and was quite
frightened in general, to a cat that verbally requests
pats with a cute little chirp, and now even struts
around our downstairs living area (a place that took
two weeks for him to feel comfortable to explore).

We are so impressed with how eager George is
to learn and play as well. We learnt how to use
treats and a clicker and George can now sit on
command, go to bed when asked, knows his
breakfast and dinner whistle, understands “come
here”, and we are currently in the process of
teaching him to hug (done by having him put his
front paws on our chest while we kneel on the
floor). He absolutely loves his daily training
sessions and seems very stimulated.
When George poses on his new

favourite things to do is bird and people watch from
our windowsills. He’s always very entertained by

RUSSELL 5yrs Ginger/White Male FIV+

This month’s cover boy, Russell, was rescued with some discharge
from a non-functioning eye and is FIV positive. But, that didn’t stop
this sweet 5-year-old ginger and white boy from finding his way into
everyone’s hearts at the shelter and at the vets. Some animals have
an indomitable spirit and Russell is a fine example of a cat that lives
life happily despite overcoming health issues.

Initially at DoggieRescue we were putting hot compresses on his
eye to clean the discharge. Over time, the lower lid developed what
looked to be an ulcer. It was treated with antibiotic cream and did
not improve. Vets were concerned that the ulcer could be a type of
cancer and suggested enucleation.

Enucleation is the removal of the eye that leaves the eye muscles
and remaining orbital contents intact. They tested the lesion after
Russell’s eye was removed and it was cancerous, but the operation
totally removed all the cancer and he needs no further treatment.

Russell has recovered really well and is now ready to be adopted.
Monika says, “He is a stoic little man! So easy to handle and lovable
but would like to be the only cat in the household.” Could your home
be the one to be rewarded with such a delightful household member?
Why not follow the 5-steps to adoption and fill out the Adoption
Questionnaire.

Rabbits FEATURE THINKING OF ADOPTING A RABBIT?

Crepuscular,
that’s me...

By Tricia Curran

“ Jet ”
DO YOU
KNOW THAT...

RABBITS ARE CREPUSCULAR!

Do you know rabbits are CREPUSCULAR? Do
you know what that means? Here’s a clue - The
word ‘crepuscular’ is Latin for ‘twilight’.

It means they are most active at dawn and dusk
and tend to lay low during midday. Scientists
believe this adaptation may have evolved to avoid
predators, and since rabbits are prey animals
that makes sense!

The light at the time of dawn and dusk is
challenging for nocturnal and diurnal predators
to see - making it a good time for crepuscular
animals like rabbits to be out searching for food.

You probably have heard of the word nocturnal
but maybe not diurnal. Diurnal refers to animals
that are most active during the day and sleep at
night - which makes you diurnal! (Unless you’re
like me and like to sleep during the day and are
crepuscular just like the rabbits too!)

This photo of Cottontail was taken early afternoon
when he was catching up on some shut eye.
Perhaps he has a busy night ahead….
