Hello Readers,

You want a puppy? Aw, come on. Aren’t you a little more
discriminating? Pets, like fine wine, improve with age.
When I think about all the dumb things I did as a puppy, I
just want to howl with embarrassment! But now I’m older
and wiser. I may be a little slower, but I’m also smarter
and calmer and less likely to drive you crazy. I’m ready to
be your friend and bed-mate, to share long walks and
evenings in front of the fire. I’ll romp like a puppy some-
times, but not all the time. Believe me, that’s something
you’ll appreciate at three in the morning. So go check out
the puppies, and then, when you’re ready for a mature
relationship, come back to me. It takes a long time to get
this sweet and I’ve got a lot of love left to give. Please
consider adopting me. Love from Misty.

DOGGIERESCUE UNLEASHED AND DANGEROUS

Compiled by Roland Briefrel

“ For over thirty years I have campaigned in opposition to the live animal
export trade. My attitude is always quite simple: the moment the animals
leave our shores, we have no meaningful control over what happens to
them and how they are treated. Unfortunately, when it comes to our
Federal politicians, the ones who can actually change things, my
concerns have always fallen on deaf ears. A few have tried to intervene,
but then the animals exposed to this trade do not vote.” Roland

THE CRUEL LIVE EXPORT TRADE - PART 2

Tens of thousands of sheep and around 1,000 cattle are reported to die each year on live export ships
(though these figures are 'self-reported' by the Master of the vessel and are in reality likely to be higher).

http://www.daff.gov.au/animal-plant-health/welfare/export-trade/mortalities

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn once wrote that the line separating evil is something foreign to us. However, it has a way
good from evil “passes not through states, nor between of creeping into every complacent society, through
classes, nor between political parties either – but right every complicit heart. Evil is there in the practices of
through every human heart”. In other words all of us are the live animal export trade and we are deeply
capable of evil. It may be a lot easier to believe that implicated, as the following statistics demonstrate.

SEPTEMBER 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 13
Below are some statistics from the years 2002-2014

• 2014: February 2014 - The Ocean Drover left Fremantle, WA in late January (20/1/14), but experienced engine

problems near Cocos Island and stopped for 3 days for repairs. The engine then operated at reduced capacity, extending
the voyage and causing extra fodder to be procured from Israel and loaded onto the ship off Djibouti in mid-February. The
ship unloaded some animals in Eilat, Israel on 21 February (a 33 day voyage) before further unloading in Jordan. A DA
investigation is underway as the mortality rates among the 42,000 sheep (at least 1630 dead - 3.89 per cent) and 6000
cattle (165 dead - 2.75 per cent) exceed the 'reportable rate'.

• 2013: August-September 2013 - 4,179 (5.53%) sheep died due to heat stress on the MV Bader III on a voyage from

Adelaide and Fremantle to Qatar and the UAE (exporter LSS). Severe temperature and humidity affected the animals on
day 21 of the voyage. The voyage was delayed a further week whilst 4,000+ carcasses were dumped in open sea, then
the remaining sheep were offloaded in the UAE on day 32. Most deaths occurred on the fully enclosed decks.
Temperatures in the assembly feedlots in SA and WA ranged from 0 to 19 degrees, and the temperatures on the ship
ranged up to a wetbulb (wb) reading of 38 wb degrees (a combination measure of heat and humidity – adult merino sheep
experience heat stress over 30 wb degrees and die at 35.5 wb degrees

• 2012: June 2011 - 72 cattle died on the MV Ghena voyage from Portland to Turkey (1.43%) primarily due to pneumonia,

but also including from septicaemia and inappetence. The AQIS report says many cattle had winter coats which were
'liberally coated with faecal material' (prior to loading). The animals endured 'heat stress' for some 17 days of the 37 day
voyage, a longer voyage due to avoidance of pirates, shipping delays in the Suez canal, a direction to join a search and
rescue operation, and then inadequate numbers of trucks during unloading.

• 2010: July 2010 - 1,914 sheep dead (3.67%) due to heat stress and enteritis/salmonellosis on the voyage from Portland

to the ME, and a further 527 sheep dead (2.08%) from the consignment form Adelaide to the ME (on the same shipment).
A total of 2,572 sheep (note - a further 131 sheep were found dead, but it was not known which port they loaded) died on
this ship.

• 2009: August 2009 - 756 sheep dead (2.19% due to heat stress and enteritis/salmonellosis on the voyage to the ME &

November 2009 138 sheep died (7.36%) during a live export flight by air to Malaysia. The ventilation on the plane was
inadequate and the sheep died due to high temperature, humidity and ammonia levels in the hold of the plane.

• 2008 February 2008 - 15 cattle (0.85%) had to be euthanased due to injuries sustained when the ship ventured into the

path of Cyclone Nicholas note that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority 'considers' the master of the vessel may have
chosen better options to avoid the cyclone.

• 2007 January 2007 - 3,500 Australian cattle were caught up in an Israeli agriculture and veterinary workers strike in

January. The cattle were delayed, then unloaded into quarantine feedlots, but without standard veterinary health checks.
Half were destined for Israeli slaughterhouses, and the rest were to be transported to the Palestinian Territories.

• 2006: February 2006 - The MV Al Messilah loaded 786 cattle in Portland (Vic.), and then loaded 71,309 sheep in

Devonport (Tas.) for the trip to several Middle East countries including Kuwait. Thousands of sheep were rejected at the
feedlot prior to loading due to 'pink eye' infections and other problems. Fully laden the staff resources were not sufficient to
treat all the cattle (6 died) and sheep that became ill - 1683 (2.36%) of the sheep died due to heat stress and failure to
eat, exacerbated by pink eye and other problems.

• 2005: The MV Maysora was delayed fully laden with 80,000 sheep in Fremantle harbour when engine problems

occurred. No animal welfare authorities were alerted.

• 2004: The MV Maysora delayed in Aqaba port in Jordan with 3,300 cattle languishing on board for almost a week whilst

importers argued about feedlot space.

• 2003: Saudi Arabia rejects the MV Cormo Express (allegedly on disease grounds) in August, with 57,000 sheep on board.

No other country would take the sheep; up to 12 countries approached declined. The Australian Government bought the
sheep from the original Saudi importer and it was late October before Eritrea agreed to offload them (and were provided
with a $1 M fee for doing so. Ten percent, around 6,000 sheep, died during the three month-long voyage. Australia
suspended all live export to Saudi Arabia (the trade resumed in mid-2005).

• 2002: In July and August four shipments of sheep recorded high death rates during export to the Middle East, and

a total of 15,156 sheep died during the voyage and discharge phase.

Hello Readers,

My name is Robyn, also to some known as the Doggie Tin
Lady! About 4 years ago I adopted little Albert who of course
has become the light of my life. It is such a joy and privilege to
own a Rescue Dog that I began to think about how I could help
such a wonderful organisation as Monika's Doggie Rescue. Due
to health issues I could not offer physical exertion such as dog
walking or bathing etc. so I decided to try and get money tins
into local businesses for donations. Every community has a
large dog loving population and many local businesses are only
too happy to accept a DR tin as part of their overall community
focus. For my part it doesn't take much time or effort and I
usually visit my clients once a month to check on tins and
deliver the latest DR magazine. ALL that is needed is more

Hey Kids,

We have wanted a dog for ages but Mum said
we didn't have a big enough yard and we
already had enough animals. It seemed like
we were the only family in the neighbourhood
that didn't have a dog. One day in the summer
holidays Mum saw a post on Facebook about
volunteer walking the rescue dogs at Monika's
DoggieRescue and that we should totally do it.
We loved the idea. We went as often as we
could and we walked Pebbles 3 times, she
seemed to "adopt us" and every time she
looked at us like - are you taking me home this
time? In the end Mum couldn't resist that cute
little face and sad pleading eyes and surprised
us one day by saying we should adopt her.

Pebbles was so happy to finally come home Check out
with us and fitted straight in, she didn't care my SMILE!
that the yard isn't huge after all we have a
great dog park on our street and she gets to
go walkies 2-3 times every day and when we
are at home she loves to cuddle up on the
lounge or on our beds with us. She is just the
best dog ever and she loves us to death.

I love taking Pebbles to different places on the MEET OUR DOGGIE “PEBBLES”
weekend and cuddling up with her in bed in
the morning before I have to get up to go to You can follow the adventures of Pebbles on
school and the way she jumps all over us [email protected] or
when we get home in the afternoon because
she is so excited to see us. We love Pebbles [email protected]
so much and can't imagine life without her.

WHEN WILL MY KITTEN BECOME A CAT?

AND WHEN DOES MY CAT STOP BEHAVING LIKE A KITTEN?

By Deb Rouse

Life stages for cats have been redefined recently by the International Cat
Care Organisation (formerly the Feline Advisory Board founded 1958).

Is redefining the life stages
based on cats now living longer
and in better health as is
happening to humans?

These stages are in consideration of Spice Velvet
the physical aging health of a cat,
rather than how it looks (they seldom
go grey) nor how it behaves. We used
to expect cats to live only to 12 years,
now I often indicate 15 years plus is
not that unusual – the oldest cat I
owned lived until 19, several friends
have cats 19 through 21 years old,
and a friend recently fostered a 24
year old male tabby.

And at the other end of the extreme, Missy Sugar
many people only consider a kitten
as a kitten when it is very small: 6 to
8 weeks. Once a kitten starts to grow,
and they grow quickly at 100gms or
more per week, then these young
ones become less desirable in some
people’s minds... and they may only
be 12 weeks old but perceived as
getting “big” and therefore not that
cuddly little kitten anymore – how
sad for those people and the kittens!

Unfortunately many people have a Winter with her babies

is around 2 years old. So very young-
at-heart while it has rapidly grown into
adult-size by 9 months of age, and
then continues to be young-at-heart
for another year or two.

SEPTEMBER 2015 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 45

So, when will my kitten become a cat? Well ICC Cat Life Stages:
from what ICC tells us, sometime in its
second year of life. And when does my cat Kitten: 0 to 6 months, growing rapidly, a kitten
stop behaving like a kitten? again from what at 6 months is similar to a human 10 years old
ICC tells us, probably after 7 years of age,
when they finally “settle down”... maybe. Junior: 6 months to 2 years, reaches full size &
learns about life, similar to humans 12 to 24 years
But these are generalisations and, of course, the
individual personality of the cat and its “catitude” also Prime: 3 to 6 years, mature physically &
should be taken into consideration. Just like humans behaviourally, similar to humans 28 to low 40’s
there are introverts and extroverts, quiet and steady
friends who most enjoy a cuddle and silent time together, Mature: 7 to 10 years, similar to humans
and some may be energetic and mischievous and want from mid 40s to 50s
to play all their life!
Senior: 11 to 14 years, similar to a humans
Regardless of its age, a kitty can be enjoyed at every from low 60s to 70’s
stage – you don’t discard your own children do you as
they grow? No, take pleasure in the next stage of life Geriatric: 15 years and over, and may not show
as there is much to be mutually enjoyed with these any signs of being “old” at all, and similar to
changes. humans in mid 70’s through 100 (when the cat
is 21 years old)
Give the cats saved from the pounds a chance
– embrace & love them regardless of their age.

Watch me leap,
See me run..
I’m pretty as a picture
& just a bundle of fun!

FIV-POSITIVE CATS

MAYBE YOU SHOULD CONSIDER
ADOPTING ONE!

“ Being involved with cat rescue alongside Monika's DoggieRescue
we are finding a number of cats we screen are FIV positive. This

means they are carrying the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, and this
scares a lot of people and so these cats get overlooked while their
FIV negative friends get adopted.” Dee

A close member of my family recently Fergus (with his Mum Carole) is now living a happy, spoilt life...
adopted a 3 year old FIV positive boy
named Fergus. He is healthy, and they the facts are;
love him to bits. Luckily I was able to
talk to them at length about FIV and 1. FIV is not transmissible to humans!
they adopted him without hesitation 2. FIV is about as transmissible as HIV - not very. Cats in the

These cats become less adoptable

special health considerations and 3.
because it’s a disease that’s
transmissible to feline housemates
via skin puncturing bites.

FIV-positive cats can live a long time
without suffering any related illness.
That’s why many veterinarians,
including the feline medicine experts at
the American Association of Feline
Practitioners (AAFP), suggest
owners never euthanase based on a
positive test alone.

some special health considerations. The
AAFP’s FIV experts offer the following PROOF THAT FIV CATS ARE ADOPTABLE!
recommendations:

• FIV-positive cats should see a vet “Chester Big Lion King Boy Erbenova”
twice a year for an exam and some STAR ON THE RISE
blood and urine checks.

• Whenever they’re off colour, FIV

• FIV-positive cats should be autographs after I

diseases (for example, raw food

diets should be avoided).

We think our FIV positive cats deserve a
loving home. These cats are listed as
special needs and, as such, we are happy
to advise and guide you through any
concerns.
