TOBY PURE WHITE
5MTHS MALE

VIDEO Toby arrived as a rescue from the pound about four
CLICK months ago. He was terrified, confused, dirty and
HERE sick and far too young to be away from his mum.
We also realised he lived in a silent world and is
100% hearing impaired. We made the decision to
see if we could put him with a mother cat who had
lost her kittens who was also seeking a home, Tia.

She initially looked at him with sad eyes and hissed
- he wasn't hers and he smelt weird. But within a
few hours she started looking at him with a softer
look in her eyes. He waited patiently, barely moving
a muscle. By that evening she started to groom his
coat back to its bright white and then eventually she
started to allow him to suckle on her warm milk.
Tia has recently been adopted and Toby, who is a
big boy of 5 months old now, is happily living with
other cats at our shelter at Ingleside.

Toby needs to be indoors not only because he is
white and prone to skin cancers but also because
he cannot hear he would not be able to avoid cars,
dogs and other dangers. Please share his story and
hopefully he will spend the rest of winter stretched
out by someone's fire or in someone's lap.

Please call us on 9486-3133 or email [email protected] for more details on any cat/kitten here.

First of all—DON’T PANIC!!!
If your cat has gone missing what
you’ll need is a plan of action.

When people go missing, rescue teams aren’t

Your search strategy will depend largely on

10 AUGUST 2016 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E-MAGAZINE

Dear People Who Surrender Their Pets

Congratulations on your new job, your new marriage, your new baby, or your new apartment. Surely
whatever it is that has changed in your life is going to make you extremely happy. Too bad your lifelong
companion and furry friend through thick and thin won’t be there to experience it with you. “ The pound
will find him a new home..” you say to your friends.

Because you decided to surrender your pet to a pound, he will spend his days alone, cowering in the
corner of a cold steel two-by-two-foot cage. While you’re cooing at your baby (remember when your cat
was your baby?) or cuddling your partner (remember how cute it used to be when your cat shared a
pillow with you?), your cat will be huddled in a litter box out of fear and uncertainty, desperately
wondering when you’ll come back for him.

The pound workers will pet him a little when they have time, but there are so many other cats in the
same situation and there just isn’t enough time to go around. Some people might come in to adopt a cat,
but they’ll walk right by yours because he’s old and scared—even though he was so sweet in your home,
where he felt safe.

Volunteers in the community will work tirelessly to network your cat’s picture on Facebook and Twitter,
along with his sad story about the person who heartlessly dumped him and how he deserves to get out
and have a second chance in life. I’m one of those people. I’ll lose sleep worrying over your cat and
spend hours trying to get him out of the pound and hope that a rescue group has enough room to fit him
in, and even offer my own money to help with costs.

Of course it’s not your cat’s fault that he’s there. He is a great cat, but even the greatest cats don’t al-
ways make it out of a pound alive. If he’s lucky, your cat will find a new home with someone who felt
sorry for him, and with that, is a better person than you’ll ever be. If your cat is lucky enough to find a
new home, it will be his forever home— unlike the home you gave him, which lasted only until circum-
stances changed and he wasn’t a priority anymore.

But if he’s not one of the lucky few, he’ll never know another home. Or even another day .. And if we fail
to get him out in time, we’ll cry as though he were our own but you will have moved on and never even
think of what happened to the pet you left behind who loved and trusted you.

Sincerely,

Everyone who works in rescue

A Volunteer comments: It's perfect ... and so sad :-( If only the previous owners knew or cared. This letter is so true.
The lucky cats are the ones that gradually show their true friendly selves. I've also seen cats shut down completely.
I believe that the owners who flippantly surrender their cats should be made to deliver their cat to the enclosure
themselves so they can see the aftermath! When I saw the two brothers Damien and Spot (2728 and 2729) for the
first time, they were frozen in fear, each cowering in a corner, and nervously licking their poor dry little lips. Damien
turned out to be a big smooch and was adopted. Spot is such a sweetheart, and will be a wonderful companion for
someone but unfortunately is still waiting. See story and photo o n page 11.

A Cat's Last Will and Testament

Before humans die, they write their last Will and Testament, give their
home & all they have, to those they leave behind.

If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I'd ask....
To a poor and lonely stray I'd give:

My happy home, my bowl & cosy bed, soft pillows and all my toys,
the lap, which I loved so much, the hand that stroked my fur & the sweet voice
which spoke my name. I'd will to the sad, scared shelter cat, the place I had in

my human's loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds.

So when I die, please do not say, "I will never have another pet again, for the loss
and pain is more than I can stand." Instead, go find an unloved cat, one whose life

has held no joy or hope and give MY place to HIM.

This is the only thing I can give....
The love I left behind.
