“ LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH ” - A NO-KILL SHELTER

Dear sweet Polly, pictured at left with
me, is one of our sad cases who came
in very emaciated. There is nothing
wrong with her medically, she has just
been starved and she is currently on a few
feeds per day to build her condition. Polly
is so affectionate and sweet with people
despite what she has experienced. She
loves her food and it is rewarding to see
her grow in strength and weight.

In this issue you will find Sally’s story from
when she was saved from the pound
through to her current home. It is beautiful
to see the transformation that girl has
gone through. It is a pleasure to read.

Some of our volunteers share their
experiences working at DoggieRescue.
From adults to children, there is a role for
everyone. Dante (8yo) has been testing
our dogs to see if they are child friendly.
This is an important role as many families
who adopt dogs want a degree of comfort
that the dog they are adopting is good
around children. Amelia (12yo) writes
about Babs (nee Abbie) and what joy she
has brought into their family. How great is
that!

We are introduced to Grace’s current life

and skin issues. It is lovely to see she is

SAVING SALLY

THIS IS HER STORY By Angela Metcalfe

IN 2016 I SAW THE ABOVE POST ON FACEBOOK. I sent a text to Monika saying that I would be willing to
pick this dog up if DoggieRescue could take her. Monika agreed and I drove out to Wagga to get her.

Monika’s dog that I drove and fell in love with)
and I adopted Sally on 19th December and she is
my big beautiful baby.

Sally is amazing with the ball and loves rolling
around in the grass. She loves munching on a bone
and never gets upset when one of her siblings steals
it away. She runs in circles when I get home, always
has lots of licks and we all love her very much. On
the weekend I was in the yard mowing the lawn and
I saw Sally through the window inside, she saw me
and I waved to her and saw her tail wag. That was
awesome.

One month later and Sally has come a long way. It's so enormously rewarding to see small wins every day
and see her become increasingly more confident and her wonderful individual personality come through.

Hi there!
I’m Kelly and I am a

at DoggieRescue shelter.

“ You will often see me on the driveway meeting and greeting people on the weekend. I especially like
seeing familiar faces when people return multiple times to walk dogs. Come and say ‘Hello’!”

I also volunteer at events and at the Westfield Warringah Mall
pop-up. 2018 was the first year DoggieRescue have had a stand
at Warringah Mall. The Mall has given us the use of the space
for free every Sunday and it has been a great success, and there
are many generous people that we meet there, so more dogs
can be saved. Bonus...free doggie kisses (pictured at right Indi)!

I enjoy volunteering at Warringah Mall as it is an opportunity
to reach a new audience that perhaps haven’t heard of Doggie
Rescue before or don’t know what it means to adopt a rescue
dog. It is also a chance to showcase some of our dogs so
everyone can see that rescue really is the best breed. The
patrons at the mall have been so fantastic and have really
shown their support. Either by buying a toy or treat, making a “ I really believe in the work that Monika and

BRUISER

&

BUTTERS

WRITTEN BY
BRUISER
( with the help of my Mum, Venta )

My little tan brother Butters is too shy Hi,
to write, so I thought I’d give everyone it’s Bruiser
an update on how our new home and here….
lives are going.

We have been here for just over 6 months
and I can say life has been great. I hear
mum was so keen to adopt us, that she
rang Monika from Scotland where she was
on holiday to set up a meet and greet the
day after she returned.
Mum has kicked dad out of his study and we both now have our own
bedroom with comfy beds, pillows to laze on (Butters favourite place
to snooze), cooling pads, toys and lots of fresh water. Mum also
made dad install a ceiling fan for us and a doggie door to the front
balcony. We like to head out there to see the world go by. We are
very good guard dogs but we don’t like one big dog in particular.
This dog and her owner walk past twice a day and we bark really
loudly. She even doesn’t look our way but I think it’s because she is
secretly scared of how fierce we are. We cohabit with a big fluffy
ginger cat. We get really excited when we see him so he doesn’t
hang out at the house during the day but does come home at night.

Mum and dad feed us a yummy breakfast and we get a chew treat
for the day and get this, mum cooks us steak once or twice a week.
Sometimes even that is not enough and I can be found sneaking
food off the plates ( see photo at left ) I can reach!!! We go for daily
walks. I love them but Butters gets a little scared. He doesn’t like the
grass bindies, bull ants or all the sticks we have around here living
near the bush. We also go for drives.

“ Recently we went to the beach. I loved the sand, digging
away, and I thought I’d like to be a life guard dog but
realised I wasn’t a fan of the water. Butters had to be carried
as he was too scared.”

MARCH 2019 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 17

Now the sofa belongs to Butters
and I, dad sometimes sits on a
separate chair, because we have
made ourselves comfortable
stretched out under the fan. Dad
even lets me lick the last little bit
of his Weet-bix he has each
morning. He’s a softie and a real
pushover!

Better go, mum is calling, wanting
another cuddle ( sigh! ) and we
like to keep her happy ‘cause we
love her. She calls us her ‘little
prawn dumplings’. I’m not sure
why as I don’t think either one of
us looks like a prawn. “ At first dad told us we weren’t allowed on the sofa,
but we won him over with our charm.”
Love from Bruiser (and Butters)

• Adoption UPDATE AFTER 12 MONTHS WE CATCH UP WITH “ MISS GIGI ” aka Bea

Hi Monika and DoggieRescue Team,

A big Hello from Miss Gigi ( was Bea ) on my ONE
YEAR adoption anniversary! I thought I’d share some
photos of my happy life. I have settled in great, get
along well with Roy (who was adopted 10 years ago
from DoggieRescue). I do boss him around a little but
he loves it! I also get on very well with all mummy’s
ducks. Mum says “ Miss Gigi is a very special cheeky
little girl who loves her walks, the sun and sitting on
chairs ands bags and lots of other random spots.”
I am so loved by my Mummy & Daddy! Miss Gigi XXX

VALE PIPPY MOORE
By Amanda Moore

Pippy had become extremely fragile and high care in the last year
of his life. He couldn't be left unattended so he would go to his
grandparents house to be babysat when I worked. I was lucky
enough to have had the last 2 months at home with Pippy, where
we spent 24/7 together and pottered around the house and garden,
cuddled on the lounge, he snuggled in my arms every night and I
hand fed him his meals (partly to help him as he had co-ordination
issues, but also because he preferred his mummy to hand feed
him). I will treasure these last few weeks together.

“ Pippy aged very quickly and it was very clear that he was
ready to leave me. Pippy's whole family was there with him,
everyone who loved him. My parents, in particular my Mum,
absolutely adored him. Life without my little baby is especially
lonely and we are extremely heartbroken.” Amanda

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be – another
lucky girl who Aunty Monika had found a Written by:
good home John Bruce
When I heard I was to star in Doggie
Rescue magazine I – got my dad to book
me into the groomers as a girl needs to
look her best.
My most embarrassing moment was -
when Aunty Monika carried me out to meet
my potential new owner, and I saw my new
dad I nearly peed myself with excitement!
I took a while but- with the very keen eye
of Aunty Monika I found my perfect match
My very best friend is - Lady Penelope,
daddy’s pretty calico kitty and my sister.
We snuggle up and sleep the day away
while our dad is at work.
If I impersonated a famous star I'd be -
Nicole Kidman as I’m beautiful, slim and
have a great personality
I am so excited - to be in DoggieRescue
magazine! I can’t wait to show all my friends.
Food that makes me drool - dog choccies
My happiest moments are - when daddy is
home and I’m lying on the lounge next to him
My greatest achievement - finding my dad!
My nickname is - “Baroness”
My tail wags most when– my daddy
comes home from work “ Well Christmas has come and gone, New Year has come and
I often wonder - what my mates are doing. gone...now Valentine's Day has come and gone...the year is
Are they still at Monika’s or have they been passing and beautiful Rory is still looking for a home. We are
as lucky as me and found a good home? hoping for our New Year’s wish to come true so that she can settle
It’s Autumn and my favourite time of in with a new family early in 2019.” John
year to - get my winter coat started. I don’t
like the cold! WHERE’S RORY’S FOREVER HOME?
As the Autumn leaves fall I - love to roll in
the leaves and then ….daddy washes me!
Rory is 2 years old and has been at Monika’s DoggieRescue for
about 18 months. My wife and I have been walking Rory for eight
or nine months, on most weekends. She has an affectionate nature
and is very intelligent. She trots along happily during our journeys
through Ingleside. Her new owner will need to be patient, however,
as Rory gets agitated when she is on her lead and sees another
dog. With some patience and good handling this can be overcome.
Rory has a really lovely disposition and with the right person or
family she will blossom into a dog you’ll fall in love with forever.
She is strong and fit, so she'd best suit a family with older children.
If you have some time and commitment, adopting Rory will mean
