‘LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH’ - A NO KILL SHELTER
By Monika Biernacki OAM

Dear Readers, Monika &
Maverick
Monika is
We are in the last month of winter and Raven pictured with

wondering what the future holds for them. adopted)
They are so innocent and sweet and have been
doing so well with their walking on lead and
socialisation. Anny’s pups are now 12 weeks and
their personalities are taking shape. Martha has
taken some candid shots of their favourite poses
with super cute facial expressions! See them
inside. It is so lovely to see some of her pups
move into homes, but please consider Anny as
well – such a gentle regal lady. P44

Maverick is helping me put thoughts together
this month. This gorgeous mature boy has
heartworm. We have started the treatment which
lasts about 3 months. He is such a social easy
dog who is great with children. He would slot into
a lot of lifestyles and does not ask for much. “ A very hear

Sponsoring pets in our magazine is a great way of keeping
in touch and helping that pet find a home. This month, long
term supporter Edina shares how she helps some of our dogs
find homes.

This month we are celebrating the life of Aurora, a mature Rotty
X girl fortunate enough to find a special family who worshipped
her and even gave her a holiday away, when the time was
near, so they had special moments to remember her by. We
wish this sort of home for all our dogs!

FEATURE

A Sponsor’s Tale…

Hello Readers,

My extended family first met Monika in Turramurra a lifetime
ago. We have adopted a range of pooches through her including
a Belgian Shepherd, Newfoundland x, Labrador and Schnauzer
x. Our average pack was 4 at any one time. All lived long, happy
lives and gave us a lifetime of love and happiness.

Starting 20 years ago I also raised funds for DR selling the
Entertainment Book, initially in hard copy, then in digital format
through the DR webpage. During the last few years we lost a
family member and 3 of our beloved dogs. We considered
adopting more dogs but our current rescues are very reactive
and some of the older family members now are too frail to
manage caring for a dog. As we all wanted to continue helping
rescues we looked at volunteering and sponsoring dogs in the
shelter. We now walk dogs at the shelter and know especially
the traits of the gentle huskies Autumn, Denali, Spirit and
Blizzard quite well. In fact they're lighter and easier to walk than
our own dogs! Its a great way to get free exercise and a joy to
see how much the dogs enjoy being out and about in the sun. Walking the huskies is a breeze as they
are so gentle, even taking treats!

As DR is a no kill shelter sponsorship has meant
we can all contribute to helping dogs stay
healthy and develop socially. This is very
important for those who haven't been treated well in
the past and who may take longer to trust and be
rehomed, like our sweet sponsor girl Lola. We also
currently sponsor the beautiful Alex and Fox
and follow their progress through the DoggieRescue
E-Magazine, and at the shelter when we volunteer
as dog walkers. I can't recommend sponsorship
enough. It's an ideal way to support rescues when
you may not be in the situation to adopt or foster an
animal.

about “ BONDED DOGS”. What
happens if two dogs are from the

being together they had to go to
separate families! Can you imagine
how sad they would be? Gross!

At DoggieRescue we never
separate doggies who love each
other but even though this is the right thing to do...for the dogs, it
can make them wait along time to find a family who wants to adopt
TWO dogs. I decided to make my photo smaller this month just so

Antonette has her I was telling my dad that I need to trim
Certificate II in my cat's claws due to how painful her
Animal Care and kneading was getting and Dad said,
Certificate III in "She's just practicing catupuncture!"
Captive Animals.
Cat’s Claws

Did you know that cat’s front claws are retractable and
dog’s aren’t? Well, if you look closely, a cat’s claws are not
totally within the paw, but they are in a resting position, up
off the ground. This makes it easier to creep up on their
prey, unheard. When they need to catch, scratch, claw,
hold and dig into something, the claws protrude.

Are a Cat’s claws like a Human’s Nails?
Cats' claws grow continuously just like human nails and
both are made out of a protein called keratin. But, a cat's
claws come out of the front of their toes whereas a human’s
nails are flat and lie on the tip of fingers and toes. Cat’s
claws catch and hold prey, tear meat from bones, are used
as a means of defense and for climbing.

Whereas humans have twenty nails, cats only have
eighteen toes and therefore eighteen nails: five on each
of their front paws and four on each of the rear paws. The
innermost, shorter claws on the front paws that would be
reminiscent of human thumbs are called the dewclaws,
and they are useful to cats in holding onto their prey.

Do cats use their claws when they walk?
Cats are digitigrade animals which means that they walk
on their toes. In contrast, humans are plantigrade walkers
which means that the sole of the foot is the walking surface.
Cats use their claws to help with balance. Because of
this, cats that are declawed can have trouble walking
properly. Declawing cats is illegal in Australia, but not in
all countries.

AUGUST 2023 DOGGIERESCUE.COM E-MAGAZINE 2 7

It is essential for cats to remove the dead part of their nails just
like we humans cut our nails when they get too long. In cats
when the nail has grown beyond the blood supply, the nail dies
and sits like an outside sheath on top of the newer, sharper nail
that is growing through. Cats must scratch to discard this outer
sheath. It is estimated that this happens to each claw about every
two to three months in the average housecat. Felines who never
scratch can require medical attention for nails that have grown so
long that they curl under and pierce the paw pads.

How can Owners Care for their Cat’s Claws?
Owners need to provide adequate clawing surfaces, such as sturdy scratching posts
or a regular outdoor floor mat in the cat’s favourite spot or cardboard scratching
surfaces. If a cat can’t find what you consider an acceptable scratching surface in
their/your home, they are going to scratch furniture and carpets. They have no
choice. They must rid themselves of their dead nails.

Clipping also aids the nail shedding process — cutting the excess nail off means that
cats don’t have to do as much scratching. To trim their nails, press the underside
paw pad and the claw will extend. Be careful to only clip the tip and not down to the
quick where the cats’ nerves are and blood is flowing. If you cut the quick, apart from
this being very painful for your cat (who will then scratch you and probably never let
you clip their claws again!), it will cause bleeding and your cat may get an infection.

I find that a human fingernail clipper is the easiest to use for clipping my cats Tsar
and Nik’s claws. The scissors-type is used if a toe-nail is so long that it is curling in
a circle. As mentioned above, long claws can grow into the toe-pad. If this happens,
take your cat to the vet.

DR kitty Pie If your cat’s claw or claws are a funny colour or circled by a red, engorged base, then
enjoying his they may be deformed -– that is, the claws are infected, rough, or scaly at the
scratchy pole base. The nail may also be pitted. This deformity is caused from an infection related
at the shelter.
to ringworm. Also, monitor kitty’s claws for embedded nails. In all cases, take your
cat to the vet.

Loving our updates from adopted pets!
It is wonderful to see them happy with
their families..

Hi Everyone,

Here is a photo of Stella and me for you
to see. She’s a wonderful cat and spoils
me with affection. I think my favourite
thing is that when she’s really energetic
she will do almost a forward roll to
tackle her toys.

Kind regards, Ashley & Stella

Hello from Onyx and his family,

Onyx is doing well. He came with us
holidaying in Jindy for the Easter break
and day trip to Blue Mountains. We
cannot take him to cafes yet as he is
reactive to dogs in close proximity. He
is happy and loved.

Cheers, Lili

Hi Monika,

I hope you and all the dogs are well. Marlo is 3.5 years

when she was a baby. I really want to thank you for
giving us an opportunity to have our girl. I can imagine
it’s so hard going through applications and trying to find
the perfect fit for the precious pups.

Marlo is absolutely amazing, she’s still our only child. Marlo loves her cuddles as you can tell

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WITH ZELDA BRYANT

You should adopt a rescue dog because :
They are so grateful in return if you do

I thought I would : Ask mum to keep my name as
Zelda when she adopted me because it suits me. I
look like a little Zeldy

If I wasn't me I'd like to be : Miss Piggy from
The Muppets

When I heard I was to star in DoggieRescue
magazine I : did zoomies around the lounge room

It took a while but : Me and my sister Josie
(Josie pants), from aunty Monika's are now good
buddies. She needed to learn I was the boss not her!

Food that makes me drool is : The smell of KFC
or Domino's pizza when mummy brings home

I am so excited : When mum puts me in the car to

My nickname is : Zeldy or Zeldy Pants

I o en wonder : What on earth mum is saying when
she talks to me

Training my humans has been fun because : I only
have to look at mummy when she's eating and then she
gives me some of her food. Because of this, she's
developed a theory of "what's her's is mine". I'm a very
lucky girl.

Everyone looks at me and says : How adorable I am.

My favourite place in the world is : Mummy's bed
where I can sleep on all day when she's at work

My greatest achievement is : Being adopted by my

If I impersonated a famous star I'd be : ALF from

I must tell you that I have a few : Actually more than
a few, admirers, 'cause I'm a celebrity wherever I go.

I like to think it’s a sign of how much she loves me but know its partly in

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

“Theo Van Camp”
Theo’s loving life. Has had a weekend away on the south coast and enjoys visiting wineries. Theo loves his car
rides and social outings, rolling in the grass and on the sand at the beach. He gets his photo taken all the time
because he’s so handsome, even at the Aesop store where he got a free bottle of Aesop dog shampoo!
moments in each day - definitely teaching us a lesson.
Theo’s wardrobe has expanded with a cable knit sweater We had a second opinion from SASH but decided not to
for winter and a couple of scarfs. Each weekend we pursue aggressive treatment - would rather he just lives
explore a different suburb and go for coffee - he just life to the fullest rather than having these last few months
loves sniffing and exploring new places He’s showing no recovering from surgery and chemo. Thanks again for
signs of slowing down and just seems happy to enjoy the introducing us to Theo. Kind regards, Louise and Dirk
