JUST A DOG

From time to time, people tell

me as a rescuer,
“lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or

“that’s a lot of money for just a

second hand dog.”

They don’t understand the

distance travelled, the time
spent, or the costs involved in “ I may be nervous, but I love to
explore and am curious and slowly
saving the precious life of opening up.” Scooter
“just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments
have come through the

rehabilitation of “just a dog.”

Many hours have passed and

my only company was “just a

slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been
brought about by “just a dog,” and in

those days of darkness, the gentle touch

of “just a dog” gave me comfort and
reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,”

then you probably understand

So for me and rescuers like

me, it’s not “just a dog”

but an embodiment of all
the hopes and dreams of

the future, the fond

memories of the past,
“I’m a super sweet, super
affectionate pocket rocket Staffy and the pure joy of the

I hope that someday they

can understand that it is
not “just a dog”

but the thing that gives

me from being

So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog,”
just smile, because they “just don’t understand” that for

over 13,000 families lives have been forever changed and

enriched by those three precious words…”just a dog”!

IN MEMORIAM

VALE GEORGE COLEMAN: Ex DoggieRescue STAR
doggie, Facebook ICON, Magazine AUTHOR, POET,
and 1ST PRIZE WINNER of Australia’s 2014 TOP DOG
Competition but most of all, a much loved doggie.

There’s something

about George…

Written by: Yasmin Coleman, his Mum

My husband and I rescued George on 17 July 2011.
He was our first baby. We saw him on the cover of a DR
magazine in a Superman outfit looking quite unimpressed
and Jamie immediately knew he wanted to rescue him.
When we arranged to meet him, we were warned that,
after being at DR for 3+ years, George had “given up”
and to not expect him to engage with us.

“Superman” George in the 2011 issue of DR magazine

My heart broke for this little boy. As warned, when we
met him, he didn’t seem to care. It really did feel like
he had given up. For Jamie and I, we knew he was
for us. I will never forget the moment when Monika
told him we wanted to give him a forever home and
asked him if he would like that and his tail wagged
with happiness. Not only did we choose George, but
George also chose us.

It took George some time to settle in but once he
learnt to trust us, his beautiful and cheeky personality
shone through. Initially we didn’t let him sleep in our
room and so every night, he would get up to mischief
in the lounge room until eventually, after keeping
Jamie company all day while he was unwell in bed,
we let him sleep in the bedroom. We never heard
another peep out of him. It would be the first of many
times that George’s persistence and stubbornness
would win out.

JUNE 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 13

In 2012, we rescued Holly from DR and George
welcomed her. In 2013, Jamie and I welcomed
twin boys into the world. We’d come to realise
that George didn’t like children and were
prepared for a rocky period, but George George
accepted them (probably because children = with Dad
food and George loved his food), and wherever
we were, he was. In 2016, we welcomed our
daughter and our greyhound, Lucy. Once again,
George took it in his stride although I’m sure he
was thinking “What?? More??”

Through DR and because of George, we have formed
many wonderful friendships. A number of times when
we visited the Cottage Animal Hospital, strangers would
ask “Is that George?” So many times, people who knew
him would say “there’s just something about George”.
He was a beautiful soul with a cheeky, stubborn streak,
and he was delightful. It was obvious he held a place
in the hearts of many people.

Sadly, George became ill and passed away on 12 March, 2021
surrounded by love. I always knew how much I loved him but even I
never anticipated how painful it would be. In those first couple of
weeks, it was suffocating. This little dog that was saved by Monika
from death row went on to mean the absolute world to my husband and
I. He was our heart dog, our little shadow and the void is immense.

“ We were blessed to have him in our lives for almost 10 years
and I am certain that not a day will go by where I will not think
of him.” Yasmin

Neeve & The Reasons YOU

Should Adopt A Black Dog

I was looking back over previous DoggieRescue Magazines and started to wonder how
many dogs I'd written about are still at the shelter. I couldn't go past Neeve as she's
such a lovely girl. I last told you about her in August last year, she was nervous of her
surroundings and had only been at DoggieRescue for two months.

As you may know black dogs (particularly large ones) are over represented in pounds,
they are overlooked often the last to be adopted if they are given that chance. Neeve
was lucky Monika saw her and saw something in her so she became a DoggieRescue WRITTEN BY:
dog. Whilst I've yet to have the pleasure of adopting a black dog I spoke to some JEN BARBOUR
people who have to find out the best things about a black dog, see my list below. DoggieRescue
Volunteer

1) Black hair doesn't stand out on black
clothing! If you're anything like me you
often sit in meetings picking golden/
brown/white dog hairs off yourself
wondering how many you've missed.
2) They look good in any colour! Bright
colours, patterns, anything looks good
on a glossy black coat.
3) They always look clean! Unlike white
dogs or lighter coloured ones a black
dog hides the dirt until the smell gives
it away.
4) That black coat makes it easy to do
a quick vacuum when guests are
coming over! You'll see exactly where
the hairs are on your cream coloured
furniture (if you have black furniture I
can't help - sorry!)
5) Status symbol! We all know that black
diamonds and black pearls are the
most exclusive and expensive... Black
dogs must be the same!
6) They are good for your morale. Why,
well everyone knows black makes you
look thinner!

SO WITH SHELTERS, POUNDS AND
RESCUES FULL OF BLACK DOGS YOU
HAVE NO EXCUSES!

volunteers. You'll never have a dark day with this
girl in your life so please take a chance on a black
dog, you won't regret it!

Neeve does need a handler with rescue experience
to help her overcome her fears and insecurities, she
still does not like to travel in cars they make her
very anxious and it's safest she is in a crate when
travelling.

We are home to several black dogs such as
Ainsley, Bucky, Chuck, Hugo, Mabel and Yankee
so take a look at www.doggierescue.com and
you may find the one to steal your heart!

P O S T C A R D
I think the big guy is happy!
Hercules's new Dad especially rented a house with secure fencing
WRITTEN BY: so he could adopt this 50kg boy. How about that for commitment!
RICHARD BOLTON

I first met Hercules over a year ago, I
volunteer at DoggieRescue and walk the
larger dogs and was told there is one here for
me. I heard my name called and basically saw
a small horse with a harness on, that was
where my love for this dog started.

He was so affectionate, uncoordinated,
clumsy, lovable, I went in the dog run with him
and found out about his legendary zoomies. I
then was lucky enough to become his dog
buddy and we had amazing walks at MacCarrs
Creek, Bondi, Dee Why and Collaroy beaches.

The thought of adopting him was sparked but
living in a one bedroom unit this was not going
to work. Then a special moment happened
when I was walking another dog and Hercules
was out with another 2 walkers. As I walked
past him he laid down and basically began to
sulk and would not move. We swapped over
the dogs and Hercules was then happy to
carry on with his walk, that was the turning
point. I found a house in Terrey Hills with a
300m2 secured grassed back yard, I then
applied for the adoption and when it was
accepted I was happy beyond belief (might
have been a couple of tears).

JUNE 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 17

“ He has settled in so well, taking over
the sofa, destroying my yoga mat, I
cannot imagine life without him now..”

Hercules has brought so much into my world
and hopefully I have to his, even though he
looks goofy he is intelligent. His training is
going well, although nothing is safe on the
bench top or the top of the fridge freezer I
found out recently. I tell people the difference
adopting a dog can bring to your life, all for
the positive!

Not every person can love a dog
but every dog can love a person.

How to describe Luna… When she first arrived, we were warned by the pound
staff she was a “little reactive”. What an understatement. Luna was reactive to
strangers, dogs, animals she viewed as prey, anything she didn’t know. But the
key thing to note about reactivity is it is not necessarily driven by aggression;
most dogs are reactive out of fear. Whilst some people write reactive dogs off for
being “too aggressive” or even calling them “dangerous” this is incorrect. Shelters
are often home to reactive dogs because their previous owners let them down
and they ended up in the pound. A reactive dog is not the end of the world! It just

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

WRITTEN BY:JANELLE HOLLIS

I’d like to tell you about Tessa, one of my favourite girls
at the shelter. Tessa is a Shar Pei /Kelpie cross and we
met when she first arrived at the shelter. We became
friends and have been walking together once or twice
a week for the last 18 months or so.

Once you get to know Tessa and she’s comfortable
with you, you discover a very sweet little girl. She really
loves getting out for her walks and gets very excited,
especially when there are yummy treats involved. She
always gives me a very enthusiastic and affectionate
greeting when I arrive at the shelter!

I find Tessa an absolute pleasure to walk. She walks
on a loose lead and at a good pace and is quite easy to
handle. She doesn’t react to other dogs or people (as
long as they keep a polite distance from us of course!)
She’s also quite a character and has a cheeky way of
getting me to give her extra treats on our walks (not
that I need much encouragement!) I have to admit she
has me pretty well trained.

JUNE 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 31

One of her favourite things to do on her walk is to
hurl herself into the grass for a nice back roll. She
enjoys it so much she jumps back up with a burst of
excitement (asks me for a treat), skips ahead and
does it all again. She also really loves the water and
will always head for the deepest puddles so she can
have a dip. I get a lot of enjoyment seeing Tessa
happily run and frolic when we’re out together.

Tessa’s other favourite things are chasing the
tennis ball (which she loves to do when she gets
into the freedom dog park at the shelter) and trips
in the car. Tessa and I recently started taking short
car rides around the neighbourhood and although
she was a little unsure at first, she relaxed fairly
quickly and now seems to really enjoy it.

So why is Tessa still waiting to be adopted? Well,
I suspect she had a very rough time before
coming to the shelter which has made her
wary and sometimes fearful of people.
Understandably, she needs time to get “ When I look at
to know and trust a person before she Tessa, I see a lovely

When meeting new people she can little girl who desperately
appear aloof (common to Shar Pei’s) wants a loving and

certain situations if she feels afraid or
uncomfortable.

Because of this, Tessa will need an adult home and
someone experienced and confident in handling
anxious / fearful dogs. Importantly, she also needs
someone who is willing to spend some time building
a relationship with her (such as taking her for some
walks and giving some yummy treats).

Once she gets to know and trust you, she’s a very
loyal, funny and affectionate girl and would make a
wonderful companion. I believe she would thrive
in the right home and I dearly hope the right person
will come along soon and give her the chance of
happiness she deserves.

Note: Thank you to Tessa’s ‘boyfriend’ (Stuart
Mooney) for taking the lovely photos.

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be : My brother, Alfie. He's a
Labradoodle and very big and strong and healthy.
When I heard I was to star in DoggieRescue magazine I :

I must tell you that I survived : Being in Bega

A life packed with adventures & love!

Hi Monika

About 14 years ago I had the pleasure of getting two
wonderful dogs from you. They were actually on the
cover of your magazine in April 2007 ( see front page
at right) . I had a friend who volunteered at the Shelter
and she suggested that Donnie and Marie might be
for me, and they were, a perfect part of the family.

Donnie and Marie were wonderful dogs, we lost Marie
4 years ago and Donnie last month. I have attached
some photos of them. The photo of Donnie below is in
his last days. Still having a fun and looking for a walk.
For the last 3 years Donnie has come to my Dad’s
nursing home where he was the home favourite. I will
be in to find a new family member when I feel am
ready.
Thanks you for your Rescues, Steve

On 13th May we had to say
goodbye to Jane. She lost her
battle with cancer but we said
farewell on a high note.

Jane was tipped into a rural pound
when she was pregnant. All her pups
were sold there and when no-one came for Mum, she got
a “due date” and time was running out. DoggieRescue
heard of Jane’s plight and came to save her. It was days
before Christmas 2018. She was a big strong girl who did
not know what pats or gentle hand movements meant. She
had learnt to avoid people. With us she learnt about gentle
handling, lead training and fun outings. Jane had been with
us some 2 years when she developed lumps that were
diagnosed as lymphoma. Jane started chemo treatment
whilst we were searching for a foster home. Sadly we did
not find one but we had a few people who took her for day
