JUNE 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM CATS E- MAGAZINE 3

FROM MY DESK By Monika Biernacki

Monika with
Russell
Dear Readers,

Gentle Bryer introduces our cat section with
those appealing, loving eyes. So many adult cats
are looking for homes but cannot compete with all
the kittens. It’s winter and there is nothing better
than snuggling with your cat in front of a warm fire.
Adult cats are so easy to care for and are just
looking for the quiet life. Antonette has found some
amazing information on the different sounds that
cats make and their meanings. It makes me
appreciate that I need to tune into my cat a little
more! We also have postcards from beautiful Betty
and Camomile. Those pictures showing Camomile
on Day 1 and Day 7 show brilliantly the changes that
a cat goes through adjusting to a new environment
and that we need patience to let them work at their
speed.

Coconut hopped onto the front page of our bunny
section, introducing his mate Cottontail, and all the
other buns. Some have found mates whilst at Doggie “ I want to thank all our volunteers and supporters who

feral population has grown. OMG! their day.” Monika

Meet Evie
http://www.DoggieRescue.com/adoption_cat.htm

Evie is a pretty Tabby/White girl who at 10 years
of age has found herself homeless. She is a quiet,
calm girl who loves pats and napping. Evie also
loves to snuggle. With a large percentage of
adopters wanting to adopt a kitten the chances of
Evie finding another home easily diminish. Currently
living at DoggieWood Evie has a warm bed, and
good food but has to compete with much younger
cats for that most sought after forever home.

Did you know? Cats, if cared for and kept inside,
can live to over 20 years of age so with that thought
in mind Evie could be just half way through her life.
She needs and deserves to be loved. If looking at
adopting please consider giving an older cat a home.

So, what is the most popular adoptable age for a cat?
Most people want kittens from 8wks –12wks of age.
When kittens pass that age their chances of being

Cats have developed an elaborate communication system with hundreds of
vocalizations to tell humans what they want or need. And those of us that know By Antonette Diorio
our cats well will recognize some of these vocalizations: for example, we all CAT ADOPTION OFFICER

is an absolute delight and we are smitten with her - we love
her dearly and can't imagine our lives without her in it!

From the first day she came into our home she
was purring, eating well and using her kitty litter,

loves to sit on our laps and still purrs to her hearts

home – as I write this she is snuggled up on the

around the house and is very content to be inside
- loves looking out our windows and watching the

How much do you know about

rabbit history in Australia?

Did you know that rabbits first arrived in Australia with convicts onboard the First Fleet
in 1788? Then in 1859, 24 rabbits were released in Victoria for hunting purposes, and
because they breed so quickly and have many in their litters, just 25 years later the
feral rabbit population had reached NSW and QLD (see photo below). Now there are
By Tricia Curran over 10 billion feral rabbits across Australia!

In the 1900s WA built the largest rabbit proof fence at so they can't escape (and to keep predators from getting

also started releasing Myxomatosis in the 1950s which
is a viral disease spread by mosquitoes - and this killed Rabbits are illegal to have as pets in QLD but that is the

Why did they do this? Because rabbits aren't native
