WISHING HARD

AT CHRISTMAS! I’m standing under the
mistletoe, I wonder if
he’ll notice...

Everyone has a Christmas wish, whether it is something we
especially want, or perhaps just a hope that one day the world
will go back to how it used to be. How many of us took for granted
the freedom we all had? Dogs in a shelter do not understand
Christmas but they do feel the excitement it brings. Any of these
dogs could be your dog...my dog...they should all be loved and
their lives have a meaning. Sadly ALL have been ABANDONED. It
is terrible when a life means nothing. Get a dog, if it does not turn
out the way you want it to be, throw it away and get a new one.
Every dog featured here has a story to tell. Every dog here has a
wish and Christmas is a time when those wishes could come true.

DOGGIERESCUE UNLEASHED
AND DANGEROUS
WRITTEN BY ROLAND BRIEFREL

FROM HOMELESS TO HOMEWARD BOUND –

CONFESSIONS OF A FAILED FOSTER CARER!

It is one of the best things you can ever do. It routinely saves lives. Yet for many, they will be a total failure at it –
and that is a good thing!! If you love animals but cannot make a long-term commitment to adopting a pet, fostering
may be worthy of consideration. Taking in a stray or homeless pet on a temporary basis can be incredibly rewarding,
and helps sensitive or special-needs animals find their forever home with minimal stress and suffering.

What is fostering all about? Time and time again
DoggieRescue launches appeals concerning the lack
of space available in their adoption kennels at Doggie-
Wood. Pets that are lucky enough to find a place in a
shelter kennel do not always thrive there as evidenced
by my own dog Cooper (who I had for 101/2 years).
Whilst DoggieRescue goes to great lengths to ensure
all their dogs are well cared for, many animals will not
transition well into kennel life. The longer a pet spends
confined with minimal human interaction, the more likely
they are to develop behavioural or temperament issues
as a result. Even the best-behaved dog or cat may be
vulnerable to the stresses of living in a shelter, not to
mention the effect on pets already shy, nervous or
frightened. Unsurprisingly, this can be detrimental to
a pet's adoption chances and thereby increase their Christmas
length of stay at the shelter. Elf needs a
home...
Foster carers help ensure that pets have the best
chance possible to find a new permanent home. By
allowing pets in need to live in a normal household
environment, the fosterer takes special care to ascertain
that their charge is well adjusted and ready to be with
the right family forever. It is the best way to keep Atticus Labrador x Mastiff 2yrs 30kgs Male Sponsor:

homeward bound with the assistance of a foster carer.
What are the costs associated with fostering?
Expected costs vary from animal to animal, but generally
medical care is covered by DoggieRescue especially in
an emergency situation. Other expenses MAY be
reimbursed, however fostering should be viewed as a
commitment to looking after the dog which unsurprisingly
means you will incur costs – food, grooming etc.

What challenges might I face as a foster carer? For
many, the most difficult part of fostering is saying
goodbye. You should be mindful of the fact that some
fostering situations carry on for months, and during that
time you may form a strong bond with your foster pet. It
is important to always remember that fostering is meant

P O S T C A R D “ Lilly Carpenter ” Where is
she now?

Hi Monika,

Lilly joined our family on New Year’s Eve 2019, it's
like she was always a part of the family.

She loves to wake us up in the morning by jumping on the
bed for cuddles and kisses. She can sense when it's time
for us to get up, she taps us and tries to keep us in bed.
She will often rest her head on our pillows and her body
under the quilt - she is a real character. She is an
absolute sweetheart with the kids, they adore her and she
is incredibly gentle and kind natured. Lilly even has a
boyfriend next door called Marshall, so it's meant to be.
Christmas 2019: Lilly starred in our “ Christmas
Merry Christmas from Darryl & Sonia
Wishes” feature of DoggieRescue Magazine. Did Jake - 13, Ava - 9 and Braxton - 7
she find a home for Christmas? Well, not quite, …….and Lilly
but very shortly after. Here is her update….

“ We are so grateful to Monika's
and all the work that you do.
Thank you for our fur baby!”
Darryl and family

Dear DoggieRescue,

Spike’s the most beautiful boy in our world, and we’re
so grateful we found each other. He’s doing great!!!
He’s so sweet, affectionate, fussy, alert, smart, all at
once! Spike doesn’t go to bed without at least a 100
cuddles and kisses everyday, 3 walks per day, and
lots of naps in between. Check out our matching PJ’s!
He makes us laugh at least once every hour and he’s
constantly our centre of attention... we’re completely
dedicated and in love with him.

Spike’s Christmas wish came
true, may all the doggies at
DoggieRescue find forever
homes this Christmas too!

Dear DoggieRescue,

Dot came into our lives in January this year and we
are so thrilled to have her as part of our family. We
love her so much! She is so cuddly, gentle, loving
and very clever. Dot loves life here in Maroubra
and enjoys her walks around the local area and
“JIMMY”
down to the beach. There is nothing she likes more
than getting together with our extended family,
particularly when her DoggieRescue cousin, Archie
is around.

We can’t believe our luck in finding Dot and love
having her as part of our family. We'd like to thank
Monika and everyone else over at DoggieRescue
for looking after Dot and helping us to find her.

FEATURE PAIRS

INTERVIEWER: about adopting a pair!
JEN BARBOUR

DoggieRescue sometimes gets
dogs arriving in pairs at the
shelter, after spending time with
them we often decide to rehome
them as a pair as it would be
unkind to separate them. One
such pair is Chris & Sasha.
These two have spent over 12
months with us and have become
firm favourites amongst the staff
and volunteers.

When Chris & Sasha arrived,
Sasha was still lactating from
recently giving birth with no
sign of the puppies and Chris
was understandably on edge.

They settled into their new home and routine fairly at the shelter. Sasha is gentle with kids of all ages while
easily, both made friends with other dogs but returned Chris tends to be more interested in the adults (they
to sleep side by side each night. Chris is special to me as have the treats!) but he enjoys a play and a cuddle.
he was named for a friend of mine who loved Staffys as
much as I do and tragically lost his life in an accident just Chris can be quite chatty when he sees another
before these two arrived, I had asked Monika to name a dog but its just his way of saying hi, and letting them

company and would suit a full time worker, both are great own pace. She’s happy to let Chris do all the exercise
with kids and popular with the families who come to walk and she’ll take all the belly rubs and ear scratches!

tip... have your photo

Why two can be better taken with 2 larger
than one… dogs. It makes you look
‘super skinny’
If you’re looking to add a
dog to the family but are
worried about it getting
lonely while you are at
work or out and about, a
bonded pair might be the
solution for you! Whilst
Chris & Sasha are very
interested and engaging
with the humans around
them they are also happy to
hang out with each other.
Please don’t be put off by
their size or ages they are
so gentle with a fun goofy
side and deserve a loving
home. Both are food
motivated so they are quite
easy to train.

Yes two dogs means
double the food but they
walk happily together so
you don’t need to double
the exercise, they will
share a bed given the

THE INTERVIEW

QUESTIONS
& ANSWERS
WITH
“ AXLE CRAGG”

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be : Monika, so I could
help dogs like me find their families
When I heard I was to star in DoggieRescue
magazine I : was excited to share my story
I thought I would: be allowed to join Mum’s
soccer team as I know I would be a great asset
however apparently I am a ball hog…
If I impersonated a famous star I’d be: Skippy
the bush kangaroo as people often say I bounce
around like a kangaroo
Food that makes me drool is : whatever is in my
dinner bowl
It took a while but : I now understand if I give the
tennis ball back after I have retrieved it they will
keep throwing it over and over
My greatest achievement is : adopting my family

DECEMBER 2020 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 33
My happiest moments are: when my whole
family is home at the same time
My tail wags most when : any family member
returns home
I often wonder : where Mum goes on the days
she wears a funny uniform and is gone all day
My nickname is : Axe; Axe man; Axleton; Axie
boy; boo boo
My favourite place in the world is : The bush
at Red Hill where I walk every week with my ex
MDR friends, mother and son Bonita and Benji’
I’m so excited : when I see Mum and
Dad putting their walking shoes on
I must tell you that I have a new: girlfriend…
I have fallen for Lexi the girl next door who is
also a MDR graduate
Training my humans has been fun because: ADOPTED &
they are so enthusiastic and eager to please
My favourite position on the lounge is: in LOVING LIFE!
the middle, between Mum and Dad
Everyone looks at me and says: what a
gorgeous boy!
On Christmas Day I will: do parkrun (if it is
back on), go home to open presents, lunch
with the extended family and then a recovery
snooze late afternoon in a nice shady spot
I am so glad that Santa Claus: brings presents
for everyone
You should adopt a rescue dog because : we
will actually rescue you right back!!!
