FROM MY DESK “ LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH ” - A NO-KILL SHELTER

“ Together we have achieved a lot for our
dogs, cats and bunnies, but as Dr Dee
says: We long for a world where there is no
such thing as a homeless kitten - but sadly
every year the problem grows.” Monika

Scarlet our Boxer girl who is undergoing chemo is
spending her first Christmas with her foster family.
Knowing she is loved and well cared for is such a
relief for me. It is all that I wish for her! Quinn is also
spending her first Christmas with her foster family
after being quite a few years at the shelter. She is
relaxed and happy and has fitted in, even with the
mature Min Pin and a couple of cats. Santa has
made her feel special at her foster home.

Reading Janelle’s story just lightens my load. She,
like so many others spend time with some of our
long termers making them a little less scared, a little
less anxious and nervous and a little more confident
and relaxed. These are the slow steps to recovery,
letting the dogs heal.

You can see our parade of Christmas dogs with their
very special Christmas wishes they have sent Santa
on p8-12. They are all special dogs to us and all so
hopeful of a home this Christmas.

Dear Readers,

It is nearly Christmas and amidst the hustle and bustle of
getting all the gifts and food for the festive season we
also try to do some gracious, generous deeds. Our
smiley Willow, our cover girl is looking her part for
Christmas but in her eyes you can see a great longing
to be part of a family who will share Christmas and
forever with her. She has been waiting a long time.

Our 2019 calendar has just come out, packed with
beautiful stars who have found their forever homes.
What a great gift – a gift that continues to help others in
need. At only $15 it is an ideal corporate gift, Kris Kringle or
stocking filler. Thank you Karen for bringing this calendar to
life. Without your dedication it would not exist and to IVEO for Oscar &
their creativity and providing it yet again on a pro-bono basis. Molly

Willow is one of the longest term doggies at the shelter. Willow’s story
began around Christmas time a few years ago, and this heartbreaking photo
of her emaciated body with her tail tucked in as far as it would go was how
she looked when we first met her. Her story is a sad one for she was starved
and mistreated but that was in her past. Willow has put all her past begin her
and is now glowing in health, even for an older girl of 11 years. This brave
girl needs a future, and a family to love her.

Willow is much loved by everyone at DoggieRescue, but needs and
deserves a home of her own. Where is her forever family? With her bright

SCARLET IS FOSTERED!

“ The look of love on Scarlet's face to her new foster parents is just beautiful ” Monika

BACKGROUND: Scarlet a 9 year old Boxer X was
saved from the pound recently with a tumour on her
ankle. It came back with the worst possible result –
an osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer. We
had to amputate the leg immediately but to give her
some quality of life we needed to put her through
chemo treatment in the hope we get at least 12
months with her.

We immediately started searching for a foster family
to take on this formidable task. Nothing was coming
forward but we had no choice but to move on the path
we had chosen for her. Her amputation healed well
and we started the chemo treatment. Still no foster
carer. We did social media campaigns. We had an
article in the Manly Daily to help spread the word in
the local community.

Scarlet is the most adorable dog. Everyone who meets
her is taken by her gentle, loving and happy nature. “ Scarlet loves to play with soccer balls and sometimes
She is obedient and so quick to learn new things.
she gets carried away and forgets she has only 3 legs
and falls over. She picks herself up, has a shake and
continues to play! Such an amazing girl!” Monika

Today we found a foster person who wanted to help. She
had recently lost her old small dog and was still grieving
however she wanted to do something special. She was in
awe of Scarlet. There was no doubt in her mind she had
the courage to see her chemo treatment through and
spoil her for as long as she has on this earth.

Scarlet at 9 years of age has had to adapt to so many
changes in her life. From being abandoned, being at the
pound, coming to our vets, surgery and now to a foster
home. Here is a photo showing how she has settled in the
first night at her foster home on the northern beaches.
She has a taste for the lounge and looks quite relaxed.
You would not think she just arrived hours ago!

“ Anyone who wants to help with Scarlet’s chemo costs can call Collaroy Veterinary Services on 9971 8487
or donate online at www.DoggieRescue.com. Donations are tax deductible. Thank you for your compassion.
Scarlet is a dog who leaves an indelible imprint on your heart once you have met her.” Monika

“ I feel love for every dog at the shelter and just
being around them all makes me feel happy.”

Spending time with them individually, having a cuddle or pat (not to
mention dispensing a few treats), playing a game, running around in the
Freedom Dog park, harnessing them ready for their walks and moving
them around the shelter from day to night kennels etc, is a wonderful
way to spend the afternoon. It’s important to me to show each dog how
special they are, and helping a frightened or nervous dog start to relax
and be happy is a great feeling.

Matilda has the
biggest SMILE! “ Willow loves attention...
I just love her... and treats!” Janelle

However, at this time of year I
think of all the dogs at the
shelter still waiting for that
special someone to come
and take them home.

Dogs who were here last Christmas
and are still waiting for their forever
homes such as Tabby, Tara, Matilda,
Khaleesi, Angel, Willow, Spike, Olive,
Rex, Sally, Nelson and Dahlia.
Gorgeous, sweet, beautiful dogs, all
full of love and waiting for someone
who is loving, understanding and
patient. Someone willing to work at
the dogs own pace and accept them
as individuals. That person will be
rewarded with the most precious gift
of love and trust in return.

On the next page, and throughout
this magazine are highlighted
dogs all hoping for a loving home
for Christmas.

For those who would like to do something different this Christmas, or feel a little melancholy during the
season, or are spending Christmas alone why not come out to the shelter on Christmas day. You can walk
a dog or just sit and have some cuddles. You will feel good and help make Christmas day a happy one
for all the dogs! DoggieRescue is closed on Christmas Eve but is open Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Dear Santa, you forgot us last year

Every year Santa Claus receives many letters, mostly from children, but this year he was very sad to see that some
doggies from DoggieRescue had sent him their photos. Why was he sad? Because they are the dogs he forgot last
year. As he looked at the beautiful faces of the homeless dogs Santa had a heavy heart because it is not so easy to
find homes for ‘long term dogs’ at a shelter. But he is going to try very, very hard this year, with your help….

Dad brought it in the other day

really pretty with lots of stuff like
coloured balls and shiny tinsel.
They even put a star on top -

Mum’s put a barrier around it so I can’t

look at it my tail just wags and wags.
No more going out in the wet and
cold anymore and I can use it day

By Liv & Ian Adams

Piper & Penny were a wonderful pair. We lost Penny on
26th May this year to complications of kidney disease. She
had been doing so well with treatment from the specialist but
she just got really, really sick one day and we had to say
goodbye. I miss the little rascal so much.

In September we decided to adopt another DoggieRescue
dog and Saffy, a long term dog, came to stay. She has
changed so much from when we brought her home, she’s
coming out of her shell! Saffy was a scared, timid little dog that
has flourished in a couple of months into a bit of a kind hearted
rascal. She is still shy of things although always comes out
of her comfort zone to try new things which she sees Piper
doing. They have become great friends and love to go for walks
together. Our favourite time of day is coming home and
opening the door to see who comes through the dog flap first -
normally they both squeeze through and charge up the hall
then remember they forgot their snacks…. and charge back!

“ Saffy is doing so well and we are all looking
forward to Christmas this year, it will be Saffy’s

A DOG IS NOT JUST BASIL’S
FOR CHRISTMAS ADOPTION DAY :
BUT FOR LIFE! October 2014

Hello Readers,

When we adopted Basil from Doggie
Rescue in October 2014 he was not the
preferred advertised dog we planned to
adopt but after our meet, greet and
walkies he fell asleep in our daughter's
(Eve) arms whilst we debriefed with
volunteers after his walk....and who
would have the heart to wake a sleeping
pup. Hence, home with us he came.

Sleeping remains one of Basil's main
hobbies - either sleeping on the couch
when his family is home, sleeping out-
side with his sister-cat, Mavis, when the
family is out, and finally sleeping on his
human-brother's (Ruben) bed at night.

Lazy days are spent guarding the yard
with lots of attitude from any noises that
may eventuate into something real;
taking breaks to chase Mavis-but mostly
being chased by her; accompanying his
humans on lots of walks through the
neighbourhood; making sure that he is
front and centre at meal prep times
because food does seem to magically
fall from the bench from time to time;
greeting his doggie-cousin, Marley, on
weekends for some play time; getting in
the car to help mum do the pick ups
from after school activities; and most
enjoyably helping to dig holes in the
garden only when his humans are
gardening- as a helping paw never goes
astray.

So it would seem that falling asleep in
a young girl's arms proved to be a
smart tactic for Basil, and we
have never looked back. Valeria
LOOKING FORWARD TO CHRISTMAS DAY
Wishing everyone a very happy December 2018
Christmas from Basil & his family.
