Dear Readers
Happy New Year to everyone! The New Year is upon
us and beautiful Bennet graces our cover with his
lovely smile. He has been waiting so patiently for his
family and we hope 2023 is his year. Such a well
mannered boy!
We look back on last year and most people will agree
they are glad it is over and we all hope this year is
better for humans as well as for the animal kingdom.
We may not have had a huge number of adoptions but
they are all special and it is especially exciting to see
some long termers and some of our mature dogs find
homes. Poptart comes to my mind as the adoption of
the year. He was the most difficult dog in our shelter
environment and we have left Kelly and Stuart to tell
the story (p8). It is a story of immense commitment
and love.

ADOPTIONS OF THE YEAR
By Sanjo Vita Fay Mokotow-den Hartog
Dear DoggieRescue Supporters,
As we embrace a brand new year I am looking forward to the challenges ahead. Our
goals for 2023 are to save as many animals as we can and find them forever homes.
In 2022 162 dogs were adopted. Some, especially the smaller breeds, came and were
adopted before we even got to know them very well but others, they became like family to
us. We loved them, cared for them and said goodbye as each in turn went to meet their
new families. On the opposite page are a few of the adoptions that stay in my mind. Dogs
like Chief, Willow, and our huge boy Tiny and of course who could forget dear Keba..
such a special family adopted her. There were dogs too, the long term ones like Wiggle
who was adopted by his foster mum, Bucky and Piper ( who was recently adopted ) to
name a few . Especially hard to adopt are the bonded pairs but our policy at Doggie
Rescue is that if dogs are bonded that they stay together and we saw pairs Ray and
Charles, Candy and Ollie, and also Zed and Moose, Samson and Delilah, and Scruffy
and Beau, all bonded pairs who were all adopted together. We saw many ‘seniors’
adopted too like Grace, Watson, Sweetie and Melvin ( see story on p24 ). Sophie, after
waiting so very long, finally found a mum to love her. Another long term girl who comes to
mind is Luna who stars in our “ Up Close & Personal’ pages 32 & 33. Our adoption of the
year is...POPTART. See his story on p8
But DoggieRescue is not just about RESCUE, it is also about REHABILITATION. Many
animals come to us broken, both mentally and physically, it can take many long months
for them to relax and feel happy. It can sometimes take even longer than that for abused
dogs to feel safe and to be able to respond to the human touch and learn to trust again.
Perhaps years. One such dog is Dougie, see his story on p26. There are many more
doggies, of all ages, shapes and sizes, waiting in pounds for that second chance at life.
Please, help us to give them that chance.
Monika

I’ll never forget the day when I was doing work
placement at DoggieRescue and the lead Kennel hand
said to me “come meet this new guy, you’ll love him”. I
was greeted by the sweetest, smoochy pup. I just
wanted to scoop him up and take him home.
When Poptart first came to the shelter he had a tibial
crest injury which healed itself with bedrest. Once off
bedrest he was introduced to gorgeous boxer x Peyton
and they became best friends. My husband Stuart
absolutely adored Peyton so we began to walk them
together. We nicknamed Poptart oompah loompah
because of his cute waddle.
Unfortunately shelter life became quite stressful for
Poptart and he wasn’t coping. He would become frantic
at the barking of the other dogs and it became difficult
for the kennel hands to move him around the shelter

There is a rescue show on television which I try hard not to watch but sometimes as I turn
channels I do see the end as there is a program following that I like to watch. Animals
rescued from very sad and dire situations, starved, with all sorts of medical problems, and
abused ...yes they are rescued...but, not to live. They are rescued just to die for if they do not
pass the ‘temperament test’ that is what happens to them. I find that really tragic and very
upsetting. It does not happen at DoggieRescue where all rescued animals are given time, love
and patient care to see them reach their full potential. Even with training it can take years for
an abused, neglected animal to trust again. That is what makes DoggieRescue so special.

REHABILITATION is an important word because of it many animals go on to find wonderful homes.
Many dogs come to DoggieRescue with massive medical issues, through long term neglect. In fact I
am sure they are dumped for that very reason—the vet bills are just so high that it is easy to dump
that dog and get a new puppy. Dogs like sweet Robbie who is overcoming his issues and feeling
much better these days, and Marley whose health is improving more than we thought possible .
Marley Bull Arab x 8mths Male Marley is a
friendly happy pup who loves to play with other

however he has a slight disability that does not
affect his life span. As he is growing he seems to
manage his balance better and it does not
interfere with his doggy play. Marley is also child

came from the pound in a very sad state. He was
blind and deaf and had a other medical issues as
well. He is slowing improving with the help of our
vets. Robbie is now on heart medication and his

infections are under control and his eyes are
under medication. He may even get some vision
back. He has arthritis and is on nutraceuticals.

LONG TERM DOG ALVIN—A small dog with a big smile
IN FOCUS By LESLEY DoggieRescue Volunteer Walker
Alvin can be a little timid (with strangers or in new
surroundings) but he is a very sweet boy once you get to
know him. It can be lovely just to sit and relax with him.
He has at least a friend at the shelter, Piper, who is a Kelpie
x Staffy and much bigger than him. He is happiest when he is
on an adventure with her, me and Sonya (another volunteer).
He is very fond of Sonya and loves walking at the side of her
leg. He and Piper are an interesting pair to watch in that he is
fairly quiet and shy, whereas she is an overgrown goofy
puppy at heart, who loves to sit on your lap (even if she
doesn’t fit). When the two of them walk together, it often
seems like they are trying to trip us up by constantly
swapping places. Like many dogs, he does like to stick his
nose out the car window – not too far of course in case cars
or tree branches are too close.
The first time we took Alvin to the water, he was not only
paddling with head held high, but at times running, full of
Alvin relaxing in the summer breeze excitement, like a small child seeing presents under the

You can see when he is happy as he

Sonya told Alvin that we had to go back
because she had other dogs to walk.
Without the slightest exaggeration, he let
out an immediate whimper, seemingly in
reply. I know animals can be perceptive,
but did he really understand what she
was saying?
Alvin shines when he is paddling in
water, so would love it if any prospective
family would take him to some shallow
water occasionally. Other than that, he
is just looking for a bit of patience and
understanding to give him time to warm
up to new places and new people. I hope
this gorgeous little boy finds a loving

CATCHING UP
WITH “ TEDDY”
Hi Kids,
Having a dog is great fun and I am loving being a
part of my new family. I was adopted in May 2022
and I wanted to let everyone now how happy I am,
and how loved…
I used to be called Peter Rabbit but because I look
like a Teddy Bear I am now called , of course
“ Teddy ”. I wanted to tell you about my new life...
My mummy says I have so many wonderful
qualities…
• I have no separation anxiety at all (yay!)
• I love being a lap dog
• I love lying on Mummy & Daddy and
listening to their heartbeats (see photo!)
I guess I am just the sweetest most loving little dog
ever. Not the brightest or bravest but I make up for it
with my immense cuteness!
I have learnt…
• Nothing bad ever happens in my new home,
no need to be afraid of umbrellas
• Sleeping in a crate at night next to mum is
awesome
• I don’t growl at the cat, she’s just curious
• There’s this thing called going on a walk on
a leash, and turning around to go home, and
sniffing every corner and tree then weeing
on it is super fun, plus I meet other dogs!
I have a little bladder problem and pee all the time so
DID YOU KNOW? I love wearing clothes and have a I am in nappies. I have quite a wardrobe of them, the
lot of cute outfits, like my New Year party hat!!!. tartan ones are my favourite!
Mummy says I have more clothes than she does!
MY NEW YEAR RESOLUTION : TO LOOK FOR MORE TREATS! I am on a special diet and live every day
for my dry treats which I get through the day ( leaving the home, bed1me in crate, walking on a leash
and distrac1ng me from a3acking a bigger boisterous dog!! Lead aggression… works a treat!)

Hello everyone, I've been volunteering at Monika's Doggie Rescue for almost
6 years now, 2 – 3 days a week in a variety of roles including; harnessing, dog
walking, enrichment and kennel hand duties. I love spending time at the shelter and
find it extremely enjoyable and rewarding. Each month it will be my pleasure to tell
you about some of the beautiful dogs patiently waiting for their forever homes.
JUST CALL ME “DOUGIE!”
I'd like to start with a senior boy; my old friend Dougie (officially named
BY JANELLE HOLLIS Douglas). Dougie is about 10 years old and a gorgeous mix of rough collie,
border collie, cattle dog, terrier and even some sharpei!

I first met Dougie when

in 2017 after he was
rescued from the pound.
He had been living rough in
bush land for some time,
having to fend for himself
and scavenge for food.
We think he had also
suffered some abuse.
Understandably Dougie
was frightened and hungry,
distrustful of people and
didn't want to be handled.
Dougie has come a long
way since then and is
very popular at the
shelter, but he is still
wary of strangers.
When Dougie sees his
friends the love just shines
out of his beautiful face.
It's almost as if his eyes
become heart shaped!
He jumps around like a
young pup and does a
lovely little happy dance.
He will sidle up close to his
friends and they can stroke
him gently. Seeing his face
always makes me feel
instantly happy.

Goodbye Elliot the Bankstown Brawler.
By Bradley Gray
You had 3 or 4 previous owners. Multiple instances
where you went off grid. There was a strong
possibility you were a stud dog at a puppy farm (you
certainly had an embarrassingly large donger for a
little guy). Then time as a street dog before
incarceration at Bankstown pound.
You came to us 6 years ago aged 12. You weighed
2.6kg and were obviously traumatised. You showed
an inordinate interest in blue sky and rain which
implied you hadn't spent a lot of time outdoors. We
fed you up to a still lean 4kg where you proved
yourself to be the Alfa Male no matter who the other
dog was (which wasn't always the smartest thing).
You were a great mate to our other dog George and
taught him many naughty things like how to knock
over a garbage bin to get more food.
You always made us laugh at your aloofness,
ambivalent attitude and disinterest in human contact.
18 years was a good run and we'll always remember
you. We miss you dearly and always will. “ You are my #1 dog of many great dogs. See
you on the other side little mate.” Bradley Gray
Three very different dogs who each in their own way made a huge impact on their families’ lives
with their amazing personali es. How wonderful that they were given a chance to live, and to love.

9 : Clear Out Old Toys
Just as we often declutter our homes of old clothes, toys,
and junk in the New Year, our pets need the same
service. Stop holding on to old, destroyed, germ-filled
pet toys and replace them with new, exciting, and
stimulating ones.
10: Try a New Activity
Just as we often get bored with predictable daily routines,
and so do our pets! Try something new with your pet in the
coming year. Choose a new activity that you can do
together, like swimming or hiking.
11: Start a Medical Log
Keep a medical log of your pet’s vet visits, medications,
and special needs. Keeping a pet medical log can be
extremely helpful if you have to make an emergency trip
to the vet for something serious in the future.
12: Visit the vet
Perhaps, one of the most important resolutions for every
pet owner to make this year, is to take your pet to the vet
at least once a year. As much as we think we know what
is best for our pet, there can be underlying conditions
going on that only your veterinary staff is able to diagnose.
13: Donate to a Rescue Charity
It costs a lot of money to rescue a homeless animal and
