A SPECIAL BOY CALLED “JIMMY”
Dear Monika,
Six years ago I adopted Jimmy from you. I'm heartbroken to tell you that 3
weeks ago it was time for Jimmy to leave us, he had reached thirteen years
old and five months but I was so hoping he'd reach fourteen years and six
months so that I'd had him for more than half his life and could be safe in
the knowledge he'd definitely been loved longer than he possibly hadn't.
My friends used to say that he'd won the lottery coming back to live with me
but I felt that I had got the best dog in the world, he could be exceptionally
stubborn but he loved his Dad more than his food and boy he loved his
food. It took a while for him to love his Dad as I think his broken heart or
previous experiences had made him wary of attachment but he settled into
the house well and after a year he was totally obsessed with his Daddy.
It was such a hard decision for me to make in the end but his heart had got
worse not better despite the medications, I could tell he was in pain from his
arthritis despite increasing the dose of his medication and he was beginning
to get anxious and depressed. However he was still eating and I decided
that him losing his appetite was one place I didn't want to get to as he loved
his food so much.
I just wanted you to know Jimmy found his forever home, could never have
been more loved and looked after and as it should be has left such a hole in
my heart.
Very best, Marc

POSTCARD EASTER GREETINGS FROM
LULU REILLY
Hello from Lulu,
I appeared in the last Easter edition of
DoggieRescue magazine. My wish then was
to find someone to love me and it did not
take long! I was adopted in April 2019 and
am happily settled into the next chapter of
my life.
Dad gets up early in the morning and takes
me for walks, while mummy gives me all the
kisses and tummy scratches I need. In the
past year I have been on many weekend
adventures to the beach, to the bush and
visiting Grandma.
“ My favourite memory has been being
a part of Mum and Dad’s wedding.”
It took a while for my sister to warm to me,
now we can both share the bed with Mum
and Dad. I still struggle with anxiety and
don’t mix well with other dogs, but I’m
getting better. Safe to say I’m one spoilt
little girl.
Happy Easter to all my friends, Lulu

EASTER HAZARDS
COMMON
EASTER
HAZARDS
FOR PETS!
Easter is a happy time as we enjoy short holidays,
fun Easter Egg Hunts, hot cross buns and most of
all— chocolate. Easter Eggs come in all shapes and
forms. It is so easy for your pet to ingest the wrong
foods and before you know it become very sick. On
these two pages I have listed some of the everyday
hazards which could harm your pet….
1. CHOCOLATE: Chocolate contains a
derivative of caffeine called theobromine. Dogs have “Dear Easter Bunny..Could you please fill my Easter
trouble digesting theobromine and ingestion leads to eggs with forever families and deliver to all my friends
hyperactivity, tremors, panting and a racing heart, needing homes at DoggieRescue this Easter!” Crumpet
vomiting, diarrhoea, and seizures. Theobromine
ingestion can be fatal in some dogs. As a general American Staffy x 5yrs 27kgs Male Sponsor: “ In loving
rule, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is. memory of Elle! ” Malki & Chandra
2. EASTER BASKETS: They are a lovely gift
idea and are great for kids as you can put small toys and
other treats in there. Unfortunately, problems happen when
pets want to get involved in the fun too! Small toys, foil
wrapping, and filler material like straw and plastic grass are
easily swallowed by pets. This is likely to cause digestive
obstruction, which can lead to expensive surgery! If you
think your pet has swallowed an Easter basket item, get in
contact with your vet as soon as possible.
APRIL 2020 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 25
3. HOT CROSS BUNS: We all love a hot cross bun
over Easter, especially smothered in butter! However,
this is also a treat we can’t share with our fur family.
This is because they contain raisins and other dried
fruits, which cause kidney failure in both dogs and
cats. Kidney failure classically causes increased thirst
and urination; however symptoms are usually seen
weeks later when the secondary effects of
reduced kidney function kick in.
Yum, yum!
4. ROAST DINNER: roast pork….
A tasty roast dinner is one of the best parts of Easter Sunday
(not including the chocolate of course!). It may be tempting to
share some of your roast with your pet; they’re part of the
family too right? But giving them scraps of fatty roast pork or
ham can allow for a whole host of problems, such as bloating,
abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy,
dehydration, fever and in more serious cases pancreatitis.
So if you want to treat your pet at dinner time, a couple of
their favourite pet treats will be a much healthier option!

Happy Easter Ezra! How are you settling in to DoggieRescue?
It’s all very new! There are lots of dogs, things to do, people to see but I
would prefer a couch of my own and humans of my own. I do like the kennel
hands and volunteers, they spend time with me and make me feel
comfortable, then go home to their own dogs every night and I stay here.
You are just a pup, only 12 months old, what do you like to do for
fun? I like cuddles and kisses, I am quite bouncy (some people are tall I
have to jump to give them kisses!). Out on walks everything is new but I
am learning quickly from the volunteers that walks are fun! There's so many
things to sniff, like this tree we are sitting on! I would like to learn to play,
I think balls and squeaky toys are interesting but I'm not sure yet.
You are a handsome little guy, your ears are so eye catching! What
do you wish you could whisper to your forever home? I'm ready! I know
you've been waiting for the right pup and I'm here! I'm sweet, gentle and
affectionate. I'm ready to explore your world with you, please let me!
What are you looking for in your forever home? I'm only young, so I
need someone around a lot so I can learn from them. Although I fit
perfectly into any lap I do need some space to run around in so maybe a
home with a garden? Most importantly I need someone to love me.

ARE YOU really
READY TO ADOPT?
Compiled by Roland Briefrel
with thanks to the
American Human Society
BUT…
ARE YOU REALLY READY TO ADOPT?
Far too many animals in Australia are
initially loved and then neglected, abused
or abandoned over time, because owners
decide... too late... that caring for pets is
more responsibility than they actually
want. The truth is, adopting a dog is a huge
step – one that will affect your lifestyle for
many years.
• Have you thought about how a pet
will be completely dependent on you
for his or her entire life?
• Some smaller dogs now live for
20 years plus. Where will you be in
20 years?
• What will happen if you decide to
move?
See Gracie
again on p10 • And have you considered whether
your lifestyle and personality really
qualifies you to become a dog

lose interest or move away?
The point I am making here is that the adoption of a dog is much more complex than many people realize. It
ought to be made using logic and a realistic appraisal of you and your family and the changes to your lifestyle
that dog ownership will bring about, not emotion. With a sensible appraisal of your readiness for adoption and
seriously listening to the advice of our adoption officers, your love affair with dogs, similar to those in this
magazine can begin…An affair which should last a lifetime!
Remember, the dogs in this
magazine know the fear of
abandonment or the loss of
everything familiar and loved.
Some have felt the terrible
insecurity of having no home, or,
just suddenly becoming past their
use by date for no good reason. Or
like poor Tommy (pictured) been a
spur of the moment adoption with
no thought to their long term future.
When the novelty wore off they
become an unwanted liability to be
mistreated ,yelled at and then
abandoned.
Catch up with Tommy and
see how much better he looks
now on page 18
Adopting a dog is possibly the BEST decision you will ever make, but it is not something to
be taken lightly, or to be made on the whim of the moment or through a child’s pester power!

AN INTERVIEW If I wasn’t me I’d like to be : A
human I think! Their food looks so good,
I keep trying to get it!
When I heard I was to star in
Doggie Rescue magazine I: Was so
happy – I told my sisters straight away
and they were as excited as me!
It took a while but : Now I don’t freak
out so much at the everyday household
sounds. The first time mum turned on the
coffee machine and ceiling fan, I freaked
out! I definitely will never like the vacuum
cleaner…
Food that makes me drool is :
Bones! Chicken, Kangaroo, Lamb – any!
And I also love my Granny Smith apple
that my sisters cut up for me each day
and the Greek yoghurt I get in my dry
food sometimes.
My tail wags most when : My family
talk to me! I just LOVE them, so much
that I want to go everywhere with them!
Even the toilet!
My happiest moments are : When all of
my family is together and we are playing,
and when I play with my best friend Axle.
I often wonder : Where my other
Monika’s friends are. And when mum will
let me have another bone.
My favourite place in the world is : On
any of my family’s beds, with them.
My greatest achievement is : How gentle
and loving I am to all children. They are
my favourite people in the whole world.
You should adopt a rescue dog
because : We have so much love to give,
but need your patience while we learn to
trust you, and accept that you will keep us
safe and love us, for the rest of our lives.
If I impersonated a famous star I’d be :
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Zoolander. My blue steel look, is amazing.
WITH LEXI GROVES Training my humans has been fun
because: They give me more food when I
do what they want! And they giggle so
much – I love the little humans giggling.

we both turned and walked away. I wonder
if I’ll ever catch one again and what I’ll do
next time… poor mum didn’t know what to

My favourite position on the lounge is:
Any position, so long as I have physical

The Easter Bunny is bringing me:
Hopefully more lamb shanks!
At Easter time I will be: Almost 2 years old.
