Meet our adorable pumpkin Frankie! OMG
does he fit the role! This cute dude is 5yo
but still acts like a puppy. Maybe someone
got his age wrong or he was not told he was
growing up. Anyway Frankie is in the festive
Halloween mood on our front cover this

mummy material and keeping him still was
a big ordeal. He was very patient with us!
We even have showgirl Lilo and Jet as a

FEATURE Article THE BUILDING OF A
NO-KILL SHELTER:
DOGGIERESCUE.COM (PT 3)

Compiled by: Roland Briefrel

This month, we continue our series on the building of DoggieRescue over the last
30 years and how long-time volunteers have contributed to its growth and success
as the leading NO KILL shelter in Sydney, NSW and Australia. What becomes clear
in the stories below, is how volunteers have come to DoggieRescue in a variety of
ways and have contributed in so many unique ways to the well-being of the animals
in our care. What is common to all of them, however, is their love of the dogs and a
Compiled by Roland Briefrel desire to see them all find a forever home.

MARG IVESON As the old saying goes “when one door closes

another one opens”. This is exactly how I became
a volunteer feeder at Monika’s DoggieRescue.
Eleven years ago, I was contemplating retirement and
wondering how, after 50 years nursing, I could cope
with so much free time on my hands.

As luck would have it, around this time I happened
to come upon an article in our local Bush Telegraph
requesting volunteer feeders at MDR. The article
stipulated the area was in the care of “elderly and
special needs dogs”. I thought, I can do this and
applied immediately.

Volunteering at Doggie Rescue Shelter was one of
the best decisions I ever made… Over the years I
have fed, cooked, cleaned, transported and so much
more for these wonderful dogs. Because of my nurs-
ing experience Monika entrusted me to perform many
other duties such as suture removal, injections, eye
care, medications and even tube feeding new puppies
when a malnourished mother dog came to DR and
gave birth but had a poor milk supply. To my delight
the “special needs”, I soon found out, included mums
and puppies, rabbits and sometimes even guinea pigs.

As well as the joy of caring for and feeding these dogs
I met amazing likeminded volunteers and kennel
hands along the way. I could never have anticipated
how lucky I have been to have made more lifelong

Monika’s DoggieRescue.

Thank you, Monika, for trusting me
with your special dogs and best of all
for having entrusted my husband and
I with our very own rescue, our sweet
little man Remy to adopt and love
during his remaining years.

Now in my late 70s I no longer feed
the dogs, but life as a volunteer is far
from over. There is always something
else to do even if only collecting and
delivering donations of food and
bedding from my area to Ingleside.
Never a dull moment at Monika’s
DoggieRescue. Dinner time is the best time

MELISSA FISHER assisting Kennel Hands etc. the Kennel Manager
offered me and my sister jobs as Kennel Hands
which we delightfully excepted. My current job

consists of cleaning night kennels and day yards,
feeding, bathing, walking, administering medication,
general checks of dogs’/cats’ wellbeing and odd jobs
around the shelter. I also take care of the dogs’ food
requirements and monitoring of the dogs’ weights,
special diets and food stock.

As time went by, the shift in the size of dogs coming
into DoggieRescue began to change. More and
more larger dog breeds were being left in pounds
rather than the smaller ones. Therefore, Doggie
Rescue had to adapt by expanding their facilities to
accommodate these larger breeds. More exercise
yards were built on the vacant grasslands as the
original yards used to accommodate 4-5 small dogs
but would only hold 1 or 2 of the larger breeds.
An early photo of Melissa with two of the
most vulnerable rescues... Lots of improvements were being made around the
whole shelter. Climb proof yards were installed,

This allowed new volunteer roles to be developed such
as Feed & Play, Dog Buddies, KH1 & KH2 and
enrichment. All these new roles greatly benefited the
dogs and helped the Kennel Hands with their work.

Cats were also becoming part of DoggieRescue. They
were previously kept in foster care until a cat shelter
area was built. It started out in one room but quickly
expanded to two rooms and 3 outdoor enclosures
joined by a series of cat runs connecting all the areas.

My sister has since moved on from DoggieRescue,
but I still love working as a Kennel Hand with all the
beautiful dogs, cats, volunteers and colleagues.
DoggieRescue is always evolving to improve the lives
of the animals they look after until they find their
forever homes and I look forward to continuing to be a
part of the great work Monika and her team do.

GEARI ROSE
September 2004 was the first time my daughter Zelda and
I visited the Homebush DoggieRescue Shelter under the
railway bridge next to Parramatta Road. I had read an
article in the newspaper in 2003 about a lady called Monika
who had taken dogs from a pound and was finding homes for
these dogs. I was over the moon when DoggieRescue opened
a shop on Victoria Road, Drummoyne in 2005 as it was just a
short bike ride away from my house. I remember when it was
due to open I was asked what day I would like to volunteer. I
think I said, “every day please", as I was so keen to start.
Helen Sykes who was ringing around for volunteers to staff
the shop, was taken aback as most people were putting down
one day a week.

It was a huge daily undertaking for Monika as she had to bring
down 25-30 dogs every day from her home on the northern
beaches in the truck and take them home every evening as
the dogs were not allowed to spend the night on the premises.
Rain, hail and shine she would be at the shop 6 days a
week. It was a real labour of love for Monika to spend 2-3
hours in traffic each day to make sure dogs were able to be
viewed for adoption and dog walking. It was at this time that
the DoggieRescue Magazine began its first colour edition
which proved an immediate hit.

OCTOBER 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 17

The shop was an amazing success with lots of dogs, and accounting. It was an extremely hectic and

I have also been delivering the very
informative Doggie Rescue magazines
on my bicycle since 2005. Each month
I distribute about 250 magazines
around my area at bus stops, coffee
shops, pet shops, vets and the local
library. I see so many people pick it
up and start talking about it with me
or their companions. On total I would
have distributed some 49,000
magazines over the 17 years and it
remains one of my monthly pleasures
to drop the magazine off and have
a chat with the owners and staff of
these businesses.

I don’t plan to stop going to Doggie
Rescue and hopefully we can
continue to find good homes for
the dogs in our care.

As Marg, Melissa and Geari have illustrated this month, there is a huge variety and number of jobs to
be carried out at DoggieRescue, all of which are important in keeping to our unofficial motto: “We’ll
give them a bone, till you give them a home!”. Moreover, these volunteers have shared Monika’s vision,
over a significant period of time and deserve our applause and admiration for their commitment and
dedication. Thank you for your contribution!!

WHAT ARE THE PROS & CONS OF
LOCKDOWN LIFE ON OUR PETS?

Covid-19, I’m sure that you can agree
with me that it has changed all of our lives
in ways we could have never imagined even
in our wildest dreams, but what about our
fluffy (or feathery, maybe even scaly) side-
kicks? What have they thought of this
worldwide catastrophe? Loved it? Hated it?
Never even noticed the change?

Chloe with
Brigette

Starting with the Pet pros of this total life changing event:
Their humans are home more often, obviously a huge bonus in
the eyes of our adoring animals who are likely loving the extra
Buddy helping Chloe to study attention and owner time that they have been receiving. Our
pets have all been a little less lonely and have had a little more
opportunity to be both cute and incredibly distracting for those of
us working from home.
Chloe with
Brigette & The main cons of lockdown : Possibly an impact would be on the
Lonhro more active pets who wouldn’t have as much opportunity to get
out and exercise and meet up with their play buddies, especially
if they have little or no backyard. Then there is always the issue
of some of the more unfortunate families perhaps struggling
financially with access or being able to afford pet supplies such
as food, toys and anything else required for their little friend’s
happiness, health and overall wellbeing. The final con in the
eyes of a mischievous pet would be the inability to get into
mischief while the owners are out, although I am sure that most
pet owners would, let’s just say, not be hating that aspect of
staying home.

To sum it up, our loyal companions are probably loving the outcome of the Covid-19 outbreak, they get more time
to spend with their favourite humans which is all these loving creatures need to be calm, happy and at peace.

nothing to Marvel and at first, he just wanted to keep moving.
Then, he and I were teamed up as “buddies” on He was tireless. I was often exhausted. Then, I discovered, by
an enrichment programme to give suitable dogs accident, that my plaintive wail of “wait” as I stumbled to keep
the opportunity to get “off-site” and experience up had achieved a dramatic result. He would halt immediately,
new places and experiences. sometimes turning to stare. And he would stay still until told he
could go on.

We built up a network of places to visit, often enjoying new
experiences. Two of the trails we follow have streams to cross,
or better still, stop and play in. There are animals to stare at.
Passers-by to observe. The equine arena at the St Ives
Showground has a couple of flat-topped obstacles that horses
jump on to, then off. Marvel aces it every time. Standing happily
on the top, tongue lolling, head cheekily on one side. He has
now added a speedy “sit, paw, down” to the performance.

Under the guidance of Nathan, Monika’s fantastic trainer,
Marvel and I started using a front harness. It’s been quite a
transformation. He is much calmer, often walking on a loose
lead. He is more inclined to interact with the landscape, foraging
in the hedges and verges he previously shot straight past in his
dogged determination to get there.

Perhaps best of all – for both of us - is that he has learned to
actually relax. Now, he will sit calmly beside me, leaning in,
actually happy to be still. He loves being cuddled and having his
fabulous soft spotted ears stroked.

OCTOBER 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 25

A few months ago, a fellow walker, the super-fit Bas offered
to take Marvel “for a run”. He meant it literally. The two of
them now regularly head off running for an hour or so, and
even Marvel arrives back properly tired.

Marvel loves people and loves meeting other dogs, he has
some great buddies he can play with at the shelter. Now, most
times we go to the Showground, he doesn't even notice the
cars he once reacted to. On busier roads, with reassurance,
he is mostly fine except with some trucks.

Marvel hasn’t been adopted yet, which makes me so sad as
he has such a lot to offer a loving individual or family. But even
I can recognise it’s not necessarily an easy fit. He needs a lot
of proper exercise. Whoever adopts Marvel will need to be
willing to take him out often. Preferably twice a day. And if
possible, access to walks where he is away from too many
vehicles.

And, like all working dogs he needs mental stimulation
whether it’s a game of hunt the treat, or regular agility work.
In return, they will get the best, smartest, funniest, most loyal
and loving buddy you could have.

The Fabulous

Miss Zali!

I remember walking into the shelter early August and being told there was
someone I had to meet, her eyes were on me the second I hit the driveway.
Those emotive loving eyes really pull you in! The moment I entered her yard
and sat down for her to come and say hello she was in my lap, no time for for-
malities with Zali it's always cuddle time.

Zali is deaf but as I have seen with other deaf residents this doesn't seem to
bother her, she is learning to play with other dogs (she has a good friend in
Rufus who is teaching her to be a dog) and enjoys her walks with the public. She

Zali is now one of the first yards I go to
when I arrive at the shelter and she knows

Because of her energy level (and her love
of zoomies) Zali needs a home with a
garden so she has room to move but she is
fairly content with her own company so
would suit a full time worker. She does need
a handler who understands she is deaf and
can work with this.

Training in the Spotlight!
Featuring “ WILLOW ”

“ This month I have decided
to focus on a dog whose
improvement I am very proud
of, Miss Willow. When Willow
arrived, she was very reactive
to other dogs and easily over-
stimulated or over aroused.
Willow is a young female Staffy x
Written by: NATHAN ARNEAUD, who like many rescue dogs has
On site dog trainer at not been socialised which has led
Monika’s DoggieRescue
to her reactivity at the sight of
other dogs.”
Our first session we had to work on building a relationship so she
knew she could trust me. The next step was teaching her to calm down,
an overstimulated dog cannot focus and therefore cannot learn. Willow
learnt that when something was going on around her and she looked at
me and engaged with me on her “yes” marker she would be rewarded.
Disengaging with her environment and focusing was difficult for a dog
so young with such little experience but we slowly built up the duration of
time she could focus on me while in a distracting environment.

Once Willow was comfortable ignoring the busy
“ shelter environment and focusing on me it was time to
forming a
positive association start allowing her to see other dogs and see if she could
focus on her handler instead of them. Willow and I
to other dogs remained in a yard with a view of the shelter while all
” the resident dogs were running to bed, she reacted to
through treats…
the first two dogs running past with their handlers, so I
increased the distance between us and the dogs being
run past and then she regained focus and engaged with
me instead. When she has a handler in her yard she
can disengage from her surroundings and focus on
them making her much calmer in the shelter
environment. When there is no handler and she’s on
her own she can still react, but this will not change in
this environment.

The focus with Willow was distance, duration, and
distraction. She could watch the other dogs from a
distance and we slowly desensitised her by building up
the time she could watch the dogs with no reaction
through forming a positive association to other dogs
through treats, if there was a reaction we worked on
redirecting her focus on to the handler (helped with
her response to the “yes” marker).

to allow her to focus on those instead of
what may cause her to react outside of the
home, these will help her relax and focusing
on them will reduce her reactivity. In a non-
shelter environment Willows reactivity would
be much less prevalent, a reminder the
shelter is a high stress environment so it’s
not surprising dogs show signs of anxiety,
reactivity and stress here but that can
change in a home environment with the right
training.

Once Willow was comfortably
desensitized to seeing other dogs
we decided to try and introduce her to
some similar aged and sized dogs, slow
introductions by placing them in yards next
to each other so they could see each other,
smell each other and engage a little through
the fence line had positive results. When
Willow and Marvel (18-month-old Cattle x
Kelpie) first met in the Freedom Park it was
hard to believe she had ever been reactive
to other dogs!

Willow is learning to play and has a few
friends at the shelter including Marvel and

In July we celebrated Mojo's 5th gotchya day. She was fun at the park. While we (and select family and friends
called Jodie when we rescued her, and had come from she has learned to trust) can snuggle her, she is still
a domestic violence situation. When Monika sent me
her picture I wasn't interested because she looked really wary of others and bares her teeth or nips if you get
timid in her pictures, but she brought her out to see us close enough. We have to be really alert around kids
anyway, and when we met her she walked on leash and dogs (loves some, hates some) but it's all worth it
perfectly, obeyed commands, and let us pet her. So we for her massive personality and the love she brings to

POSTCARD FROM…. BUBBLES RUMSEY “ Hello to all my fans at DoggieRescue!”

Hi Everyone,
I can’t believe it has now been four years since I left all
my friends at DoggieRescue. Life is great with nothing
much changing since I was adopted – I still go out for
one or two walks each day, I still have a bed in every
room of the house, I’m spoilt, and even though I’ve
managed to get a few more treats in this lockdown
period, I still don’t get as many as I would like :(

One thing which has changed though is that I’ve come to
realise how important my role as a companion is. While
in lockdown I’ve played a crucial part in keeping my
owner sane, ensuring she gets exercise, enjoys the
outdoors daily, I make her smile, and when times are a
little difficult I give her a cuddle and cheer her up.

As you can see in the attached photo, I’m very happy
and am pleased I can help my owner in these difficult
times and repay her for giving me my forever home.

SPOTLIGHT Within a short time we bonded and I have been walking her regularly
since then, including offsite to beaches and parks. ”

THERE’S NOTHING

SWEETER THAN HONEY!

Honey is an extremely loyal, affectionate girl who loves human companionship.
For this reason she would suit someone who is home more often than not. Like
many rescue dogs she has her challenges so being patient with her and taking
the time to understand her behaviour is essential. She loves to be loved and will
return it 10 fold.

Honey is a Bull Mastiff X and is a large girl. She walks well on a loose leash and
she is strong so this would need to be factored in when considering adopting her.
Here are some interesting facts about Honey:

• She loves the water but hates her bath!
• She loves her walks and time away from the shelter. She is just as happy
being close to her human companions as she is on a walk.
Written by: Sam Waters • She is intelligent and well trained. Training will need to be continued to
assist with her socialization.
DR Volunteer Walker
• She loves dogs but can be choosy, especially with smaller dogs
• She loves her car rides!
“ Honey is incredibly
loving and will thrive in
the right household
with nurturing and
positive reinforcement.
Quite simply she is a
wonderful girl.” Sam
