EVERY ABANDONED
DOG HAS A STORY

THIS IS NOAH’S….

Noah, meaning peace, came to us looking as you see
him below. He was abandoned at a railway station and
came to us under Duty of Care from the pound. We had
no shortage of drivers willing to bring him to our vets for
care! Our vet confirmed he was in this emaciated
condition from lack of food, being left in the elements
particularly sunburn, chronic fly bite and having no soft
bedding to lie on. His mucose membranes were pale
likely from chronic parasite infestation and the chronic
inflammation involving nail beds was likely from always
lying on hard surfaces.

Noah left the pound weighing 15.6kg and just in the 1.5
days he was at our vets it increased to 16.1kg. He should
be weighing 30+kg. Noah loves his food and we are
watching him put on condition. See how great he looks
in his photo shoot today!

FEATURE Article Keba: A Sweet Senior Girl
Looking for Love

Keba is a little different from the Staffys I normally
gravitate towards but this gentle soul draws you
in. At nine years old Keba is well past the puppy
chewing stage and is ready to spend her twilight
years on the couch binging Netflix with you (she BY: JEN BARBOUR
won't judge whatever you want to watch even if DoggieRescue Volunteer
it's for the sixteenth time!).

When Keba arrived to us she had an ulcerated mammary tumour which was
removed however it was cancerous and there's a likelihood it will re-occur. She's
a little stiff in her movements when she first wakes up or gets up after a lazy
snooze in the sun but the pure joy on her
face when she sees someone she likes is
heart warming.

Keba walks nicely on a loose lead, when we
went to take these photos she ignored the
dogs/kids/brush turkeys all causing chaos
around here and just paddled along next to
me without a care in the world. When we
sat down to take the photos she just leaned
in, occasionally giving me a kiss or resting
her head on my shoulder like she was
hugging me. She is so affectionate and has
the softest coat I could have spent hours
just snuggling and patting her!

Keba's wish is simple, she wants a home
with a garden so she has lots of space to
snooze the days away while she waits for
you to finish whatever you're doing, she
wants a gentle walk on days she's feeling
up to it. She would love someone who will
play ball with her! She does not mind
children and could live with kids 12+. Mostly
she just wants somewhere calm she can
call her own for her twilight years.

I would love to see Keba settled into her
home for Christmas, she deserves to be
with her family while they plan for the silly
season, while you put up the tree, and have
her first photo taken under it.
“ If you have room under your tree for our gorgeous Shepherd

NO-KILL SHELTER:
DOGGIERESCUE.COM (PT 4)

Compiled by: Roland Briefrel

In part 4 of our look at those people who have played a major role in the
building of DoggieRescue over a lengthy period, we see how involvement
in DR takes many forms and indeed occurs from afar. Moreover, we learn
how involvement and commitment to Monika’s vision has led to the
formation of rescue work internationally. Julie Hoskison shows us how
“from little things big things grow”. From tentative steps as a volunteer
Compiled by Roland Briefrel at Marsden Park, we see how Julie played a lead role in organising our

from anywhere in Australia and how merchandising has evolved to

A work friend had shown me the DoggieRescue Rescue into the organisation it is today. Along with some

afternoon to dog walk. Monika was located in a Homebush, set up the shop fronts in Drummoyne, and

NOVEMBER 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 15

We had several open days for Lifesavers which were fun and
presented Monika with a portrait when she achieved 10,000
adoptions. It was a fantastic milestone to celebrate.

Truthfully, DoggieRescue has given me more than I ever
contributed. I built a great network of committed rescue people and
made lifelong friends. Monika inspired and supported me to do
rescue work of my own in my home country of Fiji.
I don’t live near enough to be at Doggiewood very often
these days, but I notice I still say “we” when I talk about
DoggieRescue. I am always there in spirit!

MIKE GREASLEY and JIM REEVE … (As told by Jim)

“ We started in 2004 when Doggie
Rescue was at Homebush. We’re both
from the UK (moved to Australia in
2000) and are dog lovers but couldn’t
have a dog in our rental so we
thought it would be a good idea to
do some volunteer dog walking at
weekends to be able to enjoy
interacting with dogs and to get some
exercise at the same time.”

But thanks to some great persuasion by
the volunteer coordinator at the time
(Julie Hoskison) we very quickly became
involved in much more than just dog
walking!

With a marketing and communications background for and built a completely new website which included a

Perhaps the biggest thing we were involved in
was the launch of the LifeSaver regular giving
program. In 2009, DR was facing a funding crisis
and a real possibility of having to shut its doors.
As part of a small team, working with Monika and
others, in a matter of days we took the LifeSaver
idea to a working program with me setting up the
regular giving option online and Mike helping with
communications to get as many people signed
up as possible. It was a super busy and stressful
time, but it worked, and we now have a wonderful
base of regular givers providing a secure funding
base for the charity. When the DoggieRescue
calendar was first introduced, we set things up on
the website, helped with promotional activity and
managed the online sales side of things,
including packing and posting of orders.

In 2010 we relocated up to the Queensland
Tropics and now live a little north of Cairns. With
us now being in our own home, it meant we could
finally get our own dog. So Bluey, a rescue
ex-racing Greyhound, joined our family in 2011.
Sadly, he passed away in 2018 but after a year
or so of fostering several dogs for our local
Greyhound rescue group we ‘foster-failed’ last
year and now have the lovely Toby who spends
99% of his time spread out asleep on as much
of the lounge as possible! Even though we
physically moved away from Sydney and we A copy of the May 2009 DoggieRescue Magazine
couldn’t continue to do certain things anymore
we’ve remained very much involved with DR over
the last 11 years. I continue to manage online donations. Every Sunday I
process receipts and respond to queries, plus deal with the
online calendar orders each year (for packing and dispatch
by volunteers down at Doggiewood) and Mike still helps with
communications, assisting Monika with things like the tax time
appeal, the annual LifeSaver letter and other projects.

Over the years it’s been a great experience and we’ve
been able to meet some wonderful, passionate people.
We’ve watched the organisation evolve, grow and
mature but the one constant is Monika’s commitment,
compassion and determination which continues to inspire
us and keep us contributing where we can.
Mike and Jim pictured in 2010

In the words of Harvey Mackay, “None of us got to where we are alone. Whether the assistance we
received was obvious or subtle, acknowledging someone’s help is a big part of understanding the
importance of saying thank you.” On behalf of Monika and all at DoggieRescue, thank you Julie,
Mike and Jim.

FEATURE Update
KENAI—THE MOST Beautiful BOY EVER!
We were so privileged to be
able to adopt Kenai, who has
well and truly established
himself in our family and hearts.
We had a Chow Chow who
passed away at 14 years old
so Jason and I wanted to give
another older dog a loving
family to live out their twilight
years in her memory.

“ Kenai has been my shadow
whilst I work from home,
even deciding to sleep under
my desk as I’m working.”

Kenai looks forward to his daily 2-
4km walk in the nearby parks and
bushland, and a visit to Cronulla
beach on the weekend (when it’s
not too hot). He loves being around
our boys, Harry, Cobi and Benji,
and will often snuggle up on the
bed with them as an early morning
greeting. We’ve been having
regular vet visits to monitor his
autoimmune disease, but overall
he is going well and is a very active
and healthy dog who also loves
his pats and scratches at every
opportunity. We feel so lucky to
have him, he is the most beautiful
boy who just loves to be loved and
has so much to give us in return.

We feel grateful that Monika
rescued Kenai from the pound so
he had this second chance. And
we are so appreciative of the
support of the volunteers and
Kenai’s sponsors who ensured he
got so much love and the best vet
care whilst at the rescue.

“ Kenai’s Instagram account is
“kenai_our_husky” but I haven’t
added many photos yet, but will
do so soon.” Jaclyn and Jason

Written by: MEMORIAM TO CASPER
Sala Sawada
Casper passed away on 13th August, 2021. He was 18-20 years old
Dear Monika,

I have had three beautiful dogs
from you in the past. Sparky
(10+) and Casper (7-9) in June
2010 and Bela (now Bubbles)
in March 2012. Do you
remember Casper? He featured
as a calendar boy once…

Casper lost mobility in his
rear legs in May 2019. I went to
see the vet and the vet said it’s
his age, we can’t do anything.
Then I found a dog wheelchair
and Casper easily adapted it. In
September 2019, I went to see
another vet. He saw Casper
walking well with a wheelchair
but he suggested putting him
down because his lower part
was paralysed.

“ All we wished was for Casper to have some quality of life. I
wanted to support his life as long as he wished to live.”

Casper was very alert and still full of energy, he wanted to live!
I couldn't agree with this vet and never went back to him
again. One year later I found a dog rehabilitation centre and
Casper’s condition improved. The Vet and also the trainer at
Rehab called him ‘Miracle boy’.

Yes, he was a miracle boy. For the past 4 years, every summer
and winter, he seemed as if his time had come. Most of the day
he was asleep and only woke for walking, playing and eating. He
knew how to save his energy. There were so many times that I
thought Casper was dead. I poked him many times but he didn’t
wake up. My heart nearly stopped, then he opened his eyes
slowly and looked at me with innocent eyes. He did this re-
hearsal many times for me to get ready.

Many people who saw Casper said he inspired them. He walked
and ran with a wheelchair very well and made people amazed,
and hopeful. He had to wear a nappy but he didn’t mind at all,
never tried to pull it off which made him easy to look after. He
couldn’t walk but he could slide his bottom with front legs. But
Casper & his mate Bubbles usually, he sat up and looked at me and gave me a sign.

NOVEMBER 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 25

If he wanted water, he licked around his mouth.
If he wet his nappy or wanted to poo, he moved
a certain way. And if I forgot the time to give
him medication, he just stared at me sending
telepathic messages. He trained me very well.

Casper was mobile and ate very well until the
night he passed away. He enjoyed his life. Well
done Casper! We were living according to his
life routine in the past two years, so I have kind
of lost track of time now. Thinking about time to
medicate, time to change nappy then I realise
that he is not here anymore. It’s sad but at the
same time I remember funny moments with
him. There are so many beautiful memories
with Casper for 11 years.

Casper chose Bubbles 6 months after Sparky
passed away. Casper and Bubbles were so
perfect, and both cared for each other very well
for 9 years. I would like to adopt a dog for
Bubbles one day when this chaotic time settles. “ Let me share one story, Casper wasn't interested in toys but
loved his yellow lion. He had this one for 11 years! Bubbles, who
Monika, thank you for rescuing Casper’s life is a destroyer, respected Casper and never touched this lion.”
and giving me a chance to meet him.

not making eye contact to not spook him. As he began to trust me, he

REST IN PEACE BUNDY : 01/09/2021

Hi Monika,

I would like to let you know that Bundy was one special little
doggie who captured my heart. I remember she was a
favourite of many people at the time she was at the shelter. I
don’t know where she came from and I didn’t know where I
was going but she suddenly collided with me out of nowhere
and it soon felt like a small, lost piece of my heart I didn’t know
was missing had been found. When looking for goodness in
this often crazy world you can always find goodness reflected
through a dog’s eyes and this brings out the good in you as
well. Bundy was sweet and feisty; just the right amount of both
qualities which endeared anyone who met her. Just the right
amount of sweetness sprinkled about my day in the form of a
little Bundy-bundle. If you didn’t handle her gently enough you
would realise she’s the complete package! She was always
fair when laying the laws of Bundy-handling. By: Luis De Florio

She would spend hours playing with her toys, chewing
them and throwing them around entertaining herself.
Bundy
with Recently she was not able to play with her toys
Mum anymore and we had to carry her during most of our
normal daily walkie routes. She got the ‘Old Lady
Treatment’ as I would call it. VIP service being carried
from the front of the house to our front door saving her
the efforts of going down a flight of challenging stairs. I
really hope I did my best to provide her with a good life
and that her little spirit could forgive me for any times
that I was not observant enough or gentle enough.

Bundy was such a lovely little Bundle of Joy. How
I was happy that we were able to get her skin condition could such a beautiful thing exist?! How could it come
under control and have her enjoy life without constant and go so quickly? I will honour our time together
itching and redness. Unfortunately her little heart, as always as that special moment in time, passing like a
capable of feistiness as it was, was not able to continue shooting star that shakes you with amazement even if
and it was time to rest. She was a puppy, an ‘Old-Lady you only saw it briefly through the corner of your eye.
Puppy’ all the way until the end.

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be: Scooby-Doo with an
endless supply of doggy biscuits
When I heard I was to star in DoggieRescue
magazine I : did some zoomies on the beach!
It took a while but : I figured out how to use the
doggy door- I didn’t like having to push it open with
my nose but I have mastered it
My favourite place in the world is : the beach
My happiest moments are: going crazy on the
beach, playing with my mates at the dog park, being
fed, having my belly rubbed and being tucked up in
bed and wrapped in a blanket every night with kisses
and hugs from my human
My favourite position on the lounge is: well I don’t go
on the lounge as I have a luxurious bed with a mas-
Making ‘smoochy sive fluffy cushion and soft blankets, this is much

curling up but sometimes I lay on my back with my
legs in the air- so comfy!
My nickname is : Lady V

I thought I would : never be rescued after nearly 6 years,
even though I loved Monika’s resort, I love having a
family of my own
Food that makes me drool is : steak, roast beef,
chicken, pork and lamb – anything really except fish!
My tail wags most when : I am being fed or going for
walks, or having my belly rubbed or just having my
humans talk to me
I often wonder : what would have happened if another
family adopted me and if I would be so happy
My greatest achievement is : using the doggy door. But
I am also very proud that I have learned how to play with
various dogs at the doggy play park- gosh it’s a fun
place, I usually come home very knackered
If I impersonated a famous star I’d be: The Queen- I
am ‘Lady V’ after all
I am so excited : for my first Christmas with my family
I must tell you that I have a few: quirks, one in
particular, if I don’t want to go home, I am very good
at having a Mexican stand-off but my human
usually wins and I’m ok with that!
Training my humans has been fun
because: they are so deadest on making ADOPTED &
me happy which I am also ok with LOVING LIFE!
Everyone looks at me and says: Wow she
is a very majestic looking dog – they also
say “she’s a big girl”…hmmm I do love my

You should adopt a rescue dog because : they have
SO much love to give you and are just the best – they
are not spoilt and you make them so happy and they are
a lot of fun learning new things

POSTCARD FROM…. “ DAHLIA”

“ Hello to all my fans at DoggieRescue!”

Hey guys! I just thought I’d share a picture of my first ‘gotcha’
day with my forever family.

So much has changed in the last year, and dad says their
little family would not be complete without ME! They say they
have never had a dog with so much love to give, Dahlia sure
is something special! We had a “mince cake” to celebrate but
I couldn’t wait for Mum to get a nice picture and ate the whole
thing in 8 seconds flat...yummy, yum!

Thanks again for all the love and care you guys provided to
me for 3 years until my family found me. Love & licks, Dahlia

Yankee Whippet x 1yr 23.3kgs Male In all honesty, if I was in a position to adopt I would

Yankee is one of those dogs that embodies the saying “a stolen my heart. So if you’re looking for a best friend,
dog is man’s best friend”. For a dog who was dumped at the look no further cause Yankee Doodle is the perfect
pound by his previous owners he’s earned the right to be candidate.
picky with his people, but he’s not. Whether you’re great or
small, young or old, Yankee will want to be your best pal.

He has earned the nickname ‘Yankee Doodle’ but really it
should be ‘Yankee doofus’ cause he’s just a gangly, cheeky
young boy trying to find his forever family. As much as he
loves people, Yank can find the big world a bit frightening at
times, but with a little time and a lot of love he’s come leaps
and bounds. He’s a big fan of the water, so a bushwalk with
a swim at the end could be deemed his ideal first date.

His calm nature is wildly impressive for a young .Unlike
most dogs his way of showing he loves and trusts you is by
behaving, opposed to most dogs who will jump all over you.
He’ll never shy away from a game of tug, a lap to squeeze
on to or any form of attention at all.
