• Feature DOGGIERESCUE GIVE THANKS TO VETERINARY CLINICS ….

A Christmas message to all the
wonderful veterinary practices who

support DoggieRescue...

This is the second year that DoggieRescue has been
involved in rescuing cats and kittens from Death row in
pounds surrounding Sydney. While our rehoming
facilities are still growing we can only keep a small
number of kitties at our shelter in Ingleside. This is
where the support of all participating veterinary
practices is so invaluable. These vets take kittens and
cats that DoggieRescue is unable to fit in and care for
them, especially the very young kittens, many of whom
have begun their lives in such trauma and come from
the pounds in a fragile state. Working together with the
vets, DoggieRescue is able to stretch its resources to
help many more than we would be able to.

Queen’s Christmas message “ Thank you to all the kind-hearted vets who have
helped us this year, it is impossible to list you all, but
I am deeply touched by the selflessness of everyone who without your invaluable help many precocious lives
has been trying to find me a forever home this year. 2016 would have been lost. Especially at this time of the year
has been my second year homeless, but it has been one when it is not unknown for over 20 cats/kittens to come
of great celebration for the many lucky kitties who have into a pound in one day. Your dedication, care and
been adopted into loving homes. I feel great joy but also kindness is truly appreciated and with your help we will
sadness that I have not found my forever family as yet. It continue to save more lives!” Monika
is especially important at this time of the year to reflect
on the many kittens and cats currently on death row in Telephone:
pounds and homeless in shelters and to reach out to 9890 7220
keep them supported, comforted and safe. I wish you all
a very happy Christmas. Her Royal Highness Queen I 16 Ross Street,

Are you counting down the days until Santa comes? Way too many kitty-cats find themselves
either lost or abandoned at a pound, very sadly some are left at a pound by irresponsible
owners who choose their own holidays over long term commitment to their feline friends.

Arranging alternative care: If you are going away Also a stay-cation provides more time at home to better
over the summer season, then please provide a bond with your kitty – have you ever tried a small
Christmas pressie for your beloved fur-friends and container with cool water and a few ping-pong balls that
ensure while you are away they are properly looked float around in as a kitty amusement centre . Your kitties
after. You may choose family or friends, or try some of will get only a little wet. Try adding a small single leaf of
the free (or paid) pet sitting services: just do an internet cat-nip or cat-mint.
search to see who is local and their requirements, and
booking early will be a good idea.

Ensure you stock up on all your fur-friend’s favourite
meals to minimise the change for them, and over the
really hot months ensure the kitties have plenty of fresh
clean water and cool areas to lounge and snooze. Also,
ensure your contact information is up to date on the pet
register (https://www.petregistry.nsw.gov.au/#/), think
about who will be contacted while you are away, and
also consider notifying your vet, all “just in case”.

Stay-cation: a win for everyone! On the other Perhaps a little gardening for your kitty: cat grass, cat
hand, with a stay home vacation you can organise lots mint, cat nip… there are plenty of plants to add interest,
of days out or “leisure” days at home (mmm... banana and you may take your “harvest” inside to enrich your
lounge in the garden looks good for you and the kitty), kitties inside play areas.
and then there is very little change for your kitty and you
can ensure it is always in “safe hands”: yours!

My Top 5 Christmas pressies for kitties…

In no particular order…

• A NEW CLEAN CARDBOARD BOX – the kitty-joy! Be

generous and give them more than one!

• CAT GRASS – yum-yum! and good for them (moisture and for

digestion - see photo page 42), also try cat-mint (mild) or
cat-nip (strong: only one leaf is needed)

• PING-PONG BALLS – great for chasing - you may get about 24

for under $10, these are great across a wooden or tiled floor

• A CAT HAMMOCK – try making one yourself from a rectangle or

triangle of fabric which can be attached under a chair or table
inside or on a patio/veranda or deck, somewhere in the shade
which receives a breeze will be every kitty’s favourite spot

• A CATICO – any sized area that is enclosed and provides a

very safe outside area, just for your kitty or kitties – needs shade
during summer and then all the usual comforts: lounging areas
(chairs, hammocks), fresh food and water, and the view will
entertain them all day long! Inexpensive netting is available at
hardware stores, or you may try cat-mesh professionally
installed – depends on your budget and your handy-person skills.

kitty, family and friends a safe and fun time this summer" Deb

Each year 1,000’s
of abandoned pets
in pounds around
Australia spend
their Christmas in
a cage….

Through out this E-Magazine we have highlighted some pounds where the caring pound staff and
volunteers are desperately trying to save lives. It is early December and these faces you see now will by
Christmas, be gone. Hopefully all adopted but some, the older and the very young, the plainer looking
and especially the timid and scared ones, may not. Their space will be quickly filled by other equally
frightened, dumped cats and kittens.

It seems a never ending battle to try and save these precious lives
but YOU can help.

4 WAYS YOU CAN HELP SAVE LIVES!

1. ADOPT—DON’T SHOP Are you seriously wanting a KITTEN / CAT this Christmas? Are
you committed to caring for your new pet for the next perhaps 20 years? If the answer is YES then
please...adopt a homeless kitty from a pound. They are just as beautiful and their lives are equally
precious and worth saving.

2. CAN’T ADOPT THEN NETWORK On these two pages are links to large pounds. Scroll
down the lists of kittens and cats looking for homes—SPREAD THE WORD! There are thousands of
cat lovers on TWITTER and FACEBOOK. Send these links to all of your friends.

3. VOLUNTEER Contact the pounds on these pages (or your local pound) and ask them how
you can help. Donate your time and resources.

4. FOSTER A KITTY If you are really serious in saving a life enquire about rescue groups in
your area. Do you have a secure environment where a kitten/s or a cat could be cared for and a few
weeks/months to spare?

If everyone helped a little many more lives would be saved

but by ignoring the problem thousands of rehomeable cats and kittens simply perish….

Dear Santa,

I don’t yet have a name but I am one of many kitties in Campbelltown Animal Holding Facility. I am
only 12 weeks old but no longer tiny and super cute as many 7-8 weeks old baby kittens are. I am
growing into a handsome big boy with beautiful markings and a fluffy tail. The bigger I grow though the
less chance I have of being adopted or rescued. In my short life I have not known love, or had a home.
I don’t like living in a cage please bring me a family who will love me for Christmas. Imp. 5210

SANTA’S
GOT MAIL!

Dear Santa,

My name is Logan and I am a homeless kitty
at The Cottage Animal Hospital. I am 8
months old and I’ve never had a home.

I have three wishes Santa…

MY 1ST WISH would be for a family to love me
but you see it is hard because I am FIV+. Not
sure what that is but it seems the reason
nobody wants to adopt me. Dr. Dee has told
me not to lose heart, that someone will realize
just how special I am one day, but I feel sad.

MY 2ND WISH is that could you also bring a
home for the other homeless kitties here with
me at The Cottage Animal Hospital.

MY 3RD WISH, and I know you are magical,
so you can probably read my thoughts!!!
DoggieRescue 2017 Calendars make great
Christmas gifts and the sale of them saves
the lives of desperate kitties in the pound.
Could you put a few in your sack as we need
to sell them all before the end of the year.

One more thing..If I don’t have a home will you
still find me? from Logan, a very good boy.

Please call DoggieRescue on 9486-3133 at Ingleside or fill in the Adoption
form for cats on www.doggierescue.com/adoption_cat and email it to
[email protected]
