Staffies are certainly a misunderstood breed and greatly
over bred by back yard breeders wanting to make a fast
buck. The result is pounds and shelters overflowing with
them. Staffies are not for everyone. They are amongst the
most energetic breeds and need a handler who takes
training and obedience seriously as an ongoing practice
throughout their life. Staffies have power and strength

Bull breeds are powerful dogs and need aware and responsible owners who can optimise their many, many
positive attributes. It is important to train them kindly, and manage their considerable potential towards their
natural inclination to love and obey. Staffies are highly intelligent, affectionate and eager to please, giving you a
lifetime of devotion. Sadly people don’t always associate the breed with these qualities.

JUST A STAFFY CROSS
Taken from a poem by Trudie James
Today is just another day – to me they’re all the same
I have the worst of genes you see, I bear the “Staffy” shame.
The shame is in our numbers, there’s thousands with no home.
Thousands just like me you’ll find, in kennels all alone.
My mum was “just a Staffy”, my father – well who knows?
Mum, too, became unwanted, as the last puppy goes.
And then begins the process, of money-making deals
A life of “moving on” unfolds, who cares how the Staffy feels?
If you have the cash to hand, the Staffy pup is yours
But that pup is getting bigger now, just look at those big paws.
You bought me for your image,
thought I’d make you look more tough
But you’ll find my boisterous nature has already got too much.
If you had thought to train me, with kindness and with praise
You would have had a faithful friend to share your darkest days. “ Lucy”
I would lay down my life for you, but you simply cannot see
You make sure you get your money back on what you paid for me.

Have you ever thought to wonder, “Where is that Staffy now?”
The “Staffy” has another name; she’s become a “stray” somehow.
Me, I was put into a car and driven far away
The door held open, I jumped out, I thought to run and play.
It was with joy and happy heart I turned to look for you
You drove away with all my trust and a piece of my heart too.
I wandered round for many days before I was brought to a pound
Where I would wait, and wait ...sadly I was lost...but not found.
Seven days is all I had you see, seven days for you to claim

“ MILES”
Miles is a perfect example of the
unconditional love that dogs give and
their ability to trust humans when
previous owners have caused
unimaginable trauma for them.
As a large Staffy, Miles was used as a
guard dog. Without proper training from
his previous owners Miles is confused
and doesn’t know how to act around
new people and is protective of those he
trusts. In a testament to the true Staffy
nature, once you’ve gained Miles trust,
he is the biggest softie. He is always
begging for cuddles, belly rubs and
loves any form of affection or attention
(even including a bath!).
Miles’ lack of trust in the world has taught him some
valuable skills, he is now muzzle trained and every
day is getting better at loose lead walking and lead
reactivity. Miles previously had (now adopted) a
doggie pal Ivy but prefers his own space and to be
the centre of attention.
“ I believe that if Miles could talk the
stories he would tell of his life would
bring us to tears….”
My wish is that for his remaining years some special
person will bring him nothing but joy, comfort,
security and love. Miles is a great example of the
sayings “no bad dogs” and “rescued isn’t broken”
because in spite of years of trauma he still wears
his heart on his sleeve and trusts in people. If you’re
looking for a true love bug of a dog who will never
limit his love to you and truly deserves to live as a
pampered pooch, then look no further.

In the 1990’s, operating a NO KILL animal welfare organisation was
believed to be impractical, too expensive and impossible to achieve.
After all, it is quicker, easier and cheaper to euthanize animals than
bother to rehome them. So, it would take an extraordinary individual,
like Rod, who has been there in the background from the start, to help
build a fledgling Monika’s Rescues into the DoggieRescue we know in
2021.
A quiet, compassionate, yet determined intellectual Rod, as Monika’s
partner, soon learned that his life would be destined to be shared with
hundreds of companion animals as he supported Monika’s vision.
Although unassuming, Rod has been a steely backbone to Monika
and DR providing a highly logical and perceptive level of thought to all
the challenges of the past 30 years faced by DR, reflecting his science
background. Rod has been there through all the various iterations of
DR. From humble beginnings in Turramurra, to Duffys Forest, to
Homebush, Harbord then Drummoyne and now Ingleside, Rod has
been the quiet achiever, motivator and critical friend behind the
building of DR, especially when things got difficult during the GFC
(Global Financial Crisis). Rod provided sage advice, a steadying ROD ELVISH
hand, negotiating expertise and did not panic (at least in public) which
helped DR make it through.
Moreover, it has been Rod and his support of Monika, that has in many ways, allowed the dream to be developed
and Monika to devote her life to her important work. In many ways, Monika’s OAM is shared with her partner who
has always supported her vision and without whom DR may very well not be in existence today.

Whilst the precise year Ron and Ellen joined DR is not known,
we do know that they did a lot of washing of dog bedding for

Meet the Wiggliest
Staffy - Atlas!
Atlas has only been at DoggieRescue a short time but he has wiggled his way into
many hearts in that time! At only 12 months old this little one has a lot to learn and
can’t wait to get out there and explore. But this is where his story gets tricky, Atlas
has bilateral cataracts and at time of writing is scheduled to see an eye specialist.
WRITTEN BY:
JEN BARBOUR
DoggieRescue Volunteer
Atlas doesn’t let his disability
affect his enthusiasm for life, just
taking photos was tricky he was
wanting to sniff everything! He
wants to explore his way which
is with his other senses - his
hearing is brilliant even in a busy
noisy shelter he can hear people
approaching and “looks” in the
exact location of the person or
animal. He also manages to find
treats very easily! He found my
treat pouch and proved his
sense of taste is also heightened
- no cheap treats for him he only
accepted the dried chicken!
Whilst we hope we can improve
his vision Atlas does not seem to
mind he cannot see, he feels the
love he gets from walkers and
kennel hands. He smells all the
exciting scents while out on
walks and doesn’t hesitate to
jump into puddles or go for a jog.
He does love and respond to a
treat it just needs to be placed
near his nose so he knows it’s
there.

It's Bozo's 18th Birthday today, and we wanted
to let you know, that he's still going strong and
still the best boy ever. The last few months have
been exciting because Bozo got a little human
brother 12 weeks ago, and he's very protective and
confident with him, which is just wonderful to see!
“
Bozo's hind legs and his memory/cognitive
skills are more and more of a challenge to him,
but we're sure he's still a happy little chap and
he's definitely loved very, very much. ”

Training in the Spotlight!
Featuring “ MOE ”
Meet Moe, a three year
old brindle and white
Staffy male who has
been at the shelter for
Written by: NATHAN ARNEAUD, about 15 months.
On site trainer at DoggieRescue
Moe tends to be reactive to other dogs, he gets very anxious around
lots of other dogs in a shelter environment. He walks well on lead
provided there are no other dogs around. To help with easily moving
Moe in and out of the shelter to walk with some of his favourite
volunteers we needed to muzzle train him.
I want to stop here and touch on the benefits of muzzle training, they
are in no way harmful for a dog when used correctly. A dog can still
pant, drink, and eat while wearing one. In order for Moe to become
comfortable wearing a muzzle we built a positive association with the
muzzle allowing him to sniff and investigate the muzzle before feeding
him treats through it and eventually placing it loosely on his face while
still giving him treats. A muzzle is a great tool to ensure the safety of
the dog, the handler and other dogs.
AUGUST 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 29
“ Moe is best suited with Muzzle training Moe: This was a slow
process and not one to be rushed. It is
a family who have had much harder to muzzle train when a dog
has had a negative experience. Once
unsocialised dogs and live Moe became comfortable wearing the
in an area where he can muzzle, he barely noticed it was there
be walked on lead without and it’s become a part of the routine
that he knows means he’s going out for a
” At the moment I am working with
encountering many dogs. walk to explore!
Moe on: learning to ignore other dogs,
currently he responds to the sight of
another dog by barking, lunging and
pulling his handler towards the other dog.
I’m teaching Moe to become more reliant
on his handler and to trust that the handler
will not put him in a situation where he is
at risk of harm. This will help with his
current habit of internalising his fears and
stresses until they become too much.
How are we training Moe? Firstly with
desensitising and counter conditioning.
When Moe sees another dog out on a
walk he responds as I mentioned before,
what I am working on is having him
respond to a cue of “yes” he then sits he
can glance at the other dog but he then
has to look to me for a treat. This is
teaching him that there’s a positive
outcome from seeing another dog and
that I am, or his handlers are with him and
supporting him. Working on building Moe’s
trust in his handlers is also crucial here.
Next on the training schedule for Moe :
Basic manners, as well as obedience such
as sit and drop all of which are useful for a
shelter dog to know for the kennel hands
to be able to handle them easily.

CELEBRATING OUR 1ST BIRTHDAY!
A D O PT I O N U P D AT E S
POSTCARD—DEE
Dee has had a wonderful day
celebrating her birthday and she
personally picked out her favourite
new toy from the pup store, then out
for a big bushwalk! She has just
been an angel and we couldn't
imagine our family without her. She
is just full of love, fun, energy and
cuddles and has such a kind heart.
We're so lucky she came into our
lives, thank you so much for every- “ DEE”
thing. What you do for these pups
is just incredible. Adrian & Ellen
POSTCARD—LOUIE
Eddy/Louie is such a sweet and
playful boy who is showered with
love and companionship every day,
thanks to me working from home.
Louie loves it most when he’s
surrounded by family and also
EATING TIME! Louie’s a pretty trust
worthy dog but we’ve learnt not to
leave food on the bench top as he’s
stolen a few loaves of bread and a
dozen eggs too! But all is well, just
a few stinky farts for the next day
or two.
Thank you Monika’s Doggie
Rescue for loving Lacey and all her
pups and most of all, giving us the
opportunity to welcome and love
Louie. Our hearts are full and our
home just wouldn’t be complete
“ EDDY” now….. “LOUIE” without him. We love him to infinity
and beyond! Maria

“ BEE” now…“BOWIE”
POSTCARD—BOWIE
Bowie is a beautiful bundle of happiness and energy
and has grown into an incredibly loving affectionate
dog. She loves hanging out at home for cuddles on
the couch, and playtime with the hundreds of toys
she has in her special toy basket which she knows
to go and choose a toy out of. Every day Bowie goes
to one of her favourite parks where she’s used to
playing with her doggy friends, and especially loves
going to Clontarf or Curl Curl Beach where she
jumps straight in the water and swims! She loves
car rides and going on adventures with mum and
dad, and is used coming along to friends places
where she’s always the centre of attention.
Bowie has even been lucky enough to have a
playtime reunion with her sister Dee ( see photo at
left )! They played together for hours and had the
best time. She’s the centre of our world, and we are
incredibly lucky to have her in our life.
Happy first birthday to beautiful Bowie! Elodie
Happy Birthday to all my babies… Mummy “ LACEY”
As soon as COVID restrictions let up,
Mummy is planning for a play day for a
large number of my puppies (at least 5
of my 9 pups) to meet their Mum Lacey
again. I have not seen them since their
departure at 9 weeks! Might be an
idea for a future article in the magazine!
Meanwhile I relax at home in lockdown
with my family. Life’s pretty good and
Dad makes a great pillow.

“ CHIQUITA SPENCE ”
Mamma, tell me
the story about
how you adopted
me again….
If I wasn’t me I’d like to be : Jeff Bezos, then
I could buy all the ham I wanted
When I heard I was to star in DoggieRescue
magazine I : hogged the couch allll night
It took a while but : I figured out where
Mamma and Papa like me to go poops!
My happiest moments are: when I wake up
in the morning and realise it’s a new day with
my people
My favourite position on the lounge is: in
between Mamma and Papa, touching both
of them, under a blanket with a toy to chew
If I impersonated a famous star I would be:
they would impersonate me, I’m a true original
I often wonder : what time is dinner
My greatest achievement is : learning to sit,
shake, stay and leave it, and to catch a ball!
Love is: rescuing a Staffy
AUGUST 2021 DOGGIERESCUE.COM MAGAZINE 33
I thought I would : eventually find a nice family
who love me, and I did!
Food that makes me drool is: ham, sausage,
anything my humans are eating except
lettuce, bleh
Once you are owned by a Staffy you: will never
have any personal space ever again
My favourite place in the world is : when I’m
in between my Mamma and Papa, on the couch,
in the bed, in the car...
My nickname is : Lil Wiggle, Wiggletron,
Wigglemus Prime, Little BapBap, Beautiful Girl,
Caramel Cupcake, Daddy’s Little Caramel Slice,
Stop Chewing That
Everyone looks at me and says: how beautiful
and cute I am!
My tail wags most when : I’m getting cuddles or
licking my parent’s ears
Training my humans has been fun because: they
both work from home so can give me lots of love
and attention, and I get to go in Zoom meetings
I am so excited: when it’s sunny in the backyard
and we get to play, or when I get a new toy!
You should adopt a rescue dog because: they will
thank you every day with unconditional love

This month we had a visit to the shelter from
a lovely lady called Karen (pictured at left)
from Cherrybrook who came in with a couple
of baskets full of about 50 warm hand knitted
dog coats, wonderfully multi coloured coats
in all sizes.
On speaking to her she told me she has been
making these dog coats for DoggieRescue for
10 years and makes a yearly visit to the shelter
in the winter time. Karen explained how a friend
of hers (Roland Briefrel) was passionate about
helping DoggieRescue. She decided to help the
doggies too by knitting some warm dog coats,
and has been doing it every year since. In fact
Karen has already started on next winter’s batch.
That’s dedication!
