PREFACE As one of the leading technical universities in Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) offers a broad range of facilities and expertise and services, some of which are state-of-the-art technical equipment. The facilities and services provide an important link in the innovation process between basic idea (idea generation) to production (commercial or public domain). To be precise, the facilities and services at our faculties, Center of Research (CoR) and Center of Excellence (CoE) support fundamental research, process and product development ation services such as process definition and flow development • Independent use of facilities with assistance from experienced technicians Accessibility to facilities and services Everyone has equal rights to access the facilities and services offered by the faculties, CoEs and CoRs. The access is not limited to educational institutions or specific (public) research groups. In fact, we also offer practical solutions for small and start-ups businesses and that need either fundamental or advanced research and/or production. Access to and use of the facilities can be can be arranged through the appointed Person in Charge (PIC) at each faculty, CoR and CoE. Access to the the facilities can be granted in various ways namely: Rates / tariffs, priorities & rules There are different rates of charges imposed. Faculties, CoR or CoE distinguishes between a public rate for users from public research communities (e.g. universities, research institutes) and a private rate for all other users. In case of capacity restrictions, the rule of thumb is that academic users have priority over commercial users. • Direct access to the facilities for researchers of any active research project . • Direct access to the facilities using a dedicated operator from faculties, CoR and CoE or other relevant party • Access to the facilities and users are permitted to use their own trained and expert operator to run the equipment.. Equipments & Services: We have the following equipments ready to be used to conduct test on parameters related to water qualities. We also conduct the services to teach/consult on the lab courses for water quality parameters for other institution such as Politeknik We use UV-Vis Spectrophotometer - DR6000 HACH to measure colour, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total iron, manganese, copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, chromium. chloride, free chlorine, total chlorine, fluoride, sulfate, sulfide, tannin & lignin (depending on its availability). Environmental Engineering Laboratory FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING & BUILT ENVIRONMENT DR6000 HACH is use to measure Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). While multimeter HQ440D HACH is use to measure the temperature, pH test, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). To measure salinity and turbidity, we use Pocket Pro Salinity HACH and Thermo Scientific TN-100, respectively. While to test on total solid, total suspended solid, total dissolved solid, we use vacuum pump with filtration set. For dry non-agglomerated particles, sieve analysis remains a cost-effective and precise measuring instrument. Separating particles by size is called sieving Specific gravity is a measure of the actual particles which make up the soil mass and is defined as the ratio of the mass of the particles to the mass of the water they displace. A knowledge of the particle density is essential in relation to other soil tests. It is used when calculating porosity and voids ratio and is particularly important when compaction and consolidation properties are being investigated. The majority of apparatus used for the various tests is general laboratory equipment. The California Bearing Ratio or CBR test is performed to evaluate the strength of soil subgrades and base course materials. Those who design highways, airport runways and taxiways, parking lots, and other pavements rely on CBR test values when selecting pavement and base thicknesses. Compaction test is used to establish the relationship between dry density and moisture content for a given degree of compactive effort and determine the value of maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of the soil. The results of a compaction test can be used when soil is used as a sub-base for a road, railway or airfield runway and earth dam. The test is conducted according to BS1377: Part 4:1990-3.3 (for standard proctor test) and BS1377 Part 4:1990-3.5 (for modified proctor test). The settlement values obtained by this test are due to primary consolidation only, which is 90% of the total consolidation. The results of consolidation test are very much helpful in the design of foundations and embankments on soft soil. Sand Replacement Test The sand replacement method is one of the common field density tests used to determine the in situ dry density of natural or compacted soil. Mackintosh/JKR Probe Test: The Mackintosh/JKR probe test is one of the simple methods to predict the bearing capacity of soil, especially soft soil. The total number of blows required to penetrate a distance of 30 cm is recorded and used as a measure of the bearing capacity of cohesive soil. The main purpose of this ‘slake-durability test’ is to evaluate the weathering resistance of shales, mudstones, siltstones and other clay-bearing rocks. Schmidt Rebound Hammer test is a Non-destructive testing method of concrete to find out the compressive strength of concrete using the Rebound Hammer as per IS : 13311 : 1992 (PART– 02). This test provides a convenient and rapid indication. pH Test is an electric device used to measure hydrogen-ion activity (acidity or alkalinity) in solution.
