Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 51 Lucas B’s Pages (continued) SCARY STAIRS by Lucas Once upon a time, there was a baseball game in 2024. It was the Braves versus the Phillies. The Braves were the home team. In the bottom of the ninth, the Phillies were winning 5-2 with two outs, and Ronald Acuna Jr. was up to the plate with the bases loaded. Acuna unloaded on a ball to center field. It went 3,000 feet. When the ball landed, it was in a lighthouse. People went crazy because it was historic. When people got to the lighthouse, the door was so small they went in single file. Everyone died as soon as they walked in. It turned out there was a person who rose from the dead 50,000 years ago named Jeff. Jeff ate the baseball—well, that’s what people said. People heard about the rumor, and some said it was real, and some said it was fake. Years later, no one dared to step in the lighthouse. After 40 years, it was 2064, and still, no one had stepped foot in the lighthouse. Until three brave boys named Billy, Joe, and Bob decided to go in. When the three boys walked in, it was quiet. The first step on the stairs cracked, and then the next stair. Bob’s foot went right through the stair. After Bob got his foot out of the stair, the three boys looked around and saw the baseball. They knew how much that ball was worth. Billy ran right to the ball and picked it up. The one mistake Billy made was he made too much noise, waking up Jeff. They couldn’t see Jeff, however, they could hear him. They grabbed the ball and ran out of the lighthouse and closed the door. The three boys knew the right thing to do, so they shipped it to the baseball museum. About 10 years later, the lighthouse burned down, and Jeff died. THE END

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 53 TWO FRIENDS by Lucas Lucas C’s Pages (continued) One time, there were two friends named Lester and Kai, who liked to play soccer. Once, their ball fell into a pipe, so they had to go get it. They fell into the pipe and into a place with a lighthouse in it. They decided to explore around the lighthouse and found a caution sign near the edge of the lighthouse. They made sure to be careful, then they kept exploring. They found a place to stay and went inside. They found out it was very luxurious, so they decided to sleep in. When they woke up, they kept exploring and accidentally tripped into the ocean. They saw a boat near the lighthouse and decided to hop in the boat. They suddenly got lifted up and brought to the top of the lighthouse. They hopped onto the lighthouse and took a leap of faith, hoping they could survive. They had a plan to grab on to the doorframe of the lighthouse and swing into the lighthouse, and when they tried it, it worked. They went to the top of the lighthouse and directed the light towards a boat coming towards the lighthouse, and when the person came to the lighthouse, they thanked the two friends and invited them to his shed. It was more luxurious than the one from last night, so they thanked the man and they kept scavenging for the soccer ball, and then they found it in the lighthouse. They picked it up and went into the shed that the man had introduced them to. When they woke up, the ball was missing. The two friends wondered for a while, then Lester had an idea. The soccer ball was a very expensive one, so it had a tracking chip on it. It was also his, so Lester figured they could go back in the pipe and get his phone. When he tracked it down, they got the soccer ball and went back home. The End.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 54 Maddison’s Pages THE DARKENING LIGHTHOUSE “I like this photo because it captures the lighthouse and the forest. I chose this photo because I think it will go well with my story.” Maddison’s Photo Selection: THE HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE by Maddison Once, there were two girls named Kila and April, both 10 years old. One day, the girls went to an old lighthouse for a field trip with their class. The lighthouse was really old, and the people who owned it, also quite elderly, nicely enough, opened the lighthouse. Kila and April decided to go inside the lighthouse and went upstairs. Eventually, April started to hear a mysterious moaning noise, and then so did Kila. Suddenly, everything went cold, and a ghostly voice said, “Hello, children. Welcome to the lighthouse.” Cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 55 Maddison’s Pages (continued) The girls were suddenly terrified. “Who are you?” asked April. “I am the ghost of the old lighthouse keeper’s daughter. My name was Eleanna. Now I haunt this place,” the voice replied. Kila looked at April and said, “Um, April, we should go now.” “Yes,” said April. Then Eleanna looked at them with an evil grin, “Now, now, children, you will not leave yet. My story is not told!” April and Kila looked at each other, terrified. “Um, well, we can listen to your story, I guess,” said April. “April… I guess we could,” said Kila. April was terrified, and so was Kila. “Okay, this is how it happened. I had been visiting San Francisco and was coming back to Vancouver Island. It was a cold and stormy night; you couldn’t see anything, even if it was your nose. The captain missed his turning point, and we sailed off course, far, far away from land. Eventually, we hit hard rocks, and the boat started sinking. I drowned on the second day of sinking. Now I am here, eternally, never to sleep or eat, for my anger will not stop ’till I have revenge!” April and Kila looked at each other, then tried to run away. “Not so fast, you will not leave now!” shouted Eleanna. “Why did you say after your story we could leave?” asked April. “Things change,” said Eleanna. Then Kila said, “No, we should leave!” “No, you will not, because I eat CHILDREN!!!” Kila, grab your bag. “Okay, why?” April looked at Kila, in a way that said, ‘Are you serious?’ Suddenly, Eleanna opened her ghostly mouth so she could swallow their souls. April and Kila ran to the window and started hitting it with their backpacks. “Not so fast!” said Eleanna, then April screamed, “HELP!” Then so did Kila. The girls kept hitting the windows with their backpacks. They kept screaming for help and running from Eleanna. “Kila, behind here,” whispered April, so they ducked behind part of the stairwell. “YOU CAN’T RUN FROM ME!” screeched Eleanna. April and Kila looked at each other in fear. When Eleanna wasn’t looking, they started hitting the windows with their backpacks. Eleanna noticed them and tried to suck their souls. Kila broke a window, so she and April jumped out of it into the cold, dark ocean. Thankfully, someone from their class saw them and told the teacher. The girls were helped out of the ocean. Their teacher wanted to know what happened, so the girls told their story. “We went into the top of the tower and saw a ghost, an ACTUAL ghost. She wanted to tell her story before we could leave, so we listened,” said April. “After her story, we tried to leave, but she tried to EAT US. Then we tried to hide. When she wasn’t looking, we broke a window and jumped out to here now!” said Kila. Then the teacher called the police because she didn’t know what else to do. They all lived happily ever after. The End! THE HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE (cont.)

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 57 Phoenix’s Pages (continued) THE HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE by Phoenix The grade 4 and 5 class from John Muir went to a lighthouse near Shirley Delicious in a big yellow school bus. We finally got to the lighthouse, but something was wrong. Somebody was in the lighthouse. We checked inside, and a monster suddenly scooped Ledger up. We called and screamed to help him, but no one could get inside. Finally, our teacher called the police. When they arrived, they checked the lighthouse, but there was absolutely nothing there. It was completely empty. Zarrin was looking around the back of the lighthouse, and we heard him scream. When we got there, he was sitting down below on the rocks, and his leg was broken. The paramedics went to rescue him, but when the students looked back, they vanished. And then suddenly, Zarrin vanished, and then EVERYBODY VANISHED but PHOENIX. I was standing there in shock. I couldn’t move. But then I tried and turned off the power. Everyone was free, and Zarrin was back. THE END

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 59 Sasha’s Pages (continued) THE ROBINS AT SEA by Sasha You may know the robins that live in forests, but this robin is different. Acorn the robin lives by the old lighthouse in Shirley. She is friends with everybody in the forest. She loves exploring the fields and beaches by the lighthouse with her friends and family. One day, Acorn, Sofia the Sandpiper, and Salty the Seal went to the lighthouse. They explored the inside, the outside, and the roof. After that, they went to the cliffside to look at the waves. Then Acorn slipped and tumbled down to the water. Later, she woke up on a raft. No one was there, but she decided she would try to find the land and get resources to build a shelter, but for now, she would go to sleep. In the morning, she found a nice little island. She looked around and saw a lot of wood on the ground and decided to gather it and make a shelter. “I will sleep here tonight,” she thought to herself. Two weeks later, she finally saw the lighthouse and was able to quickly fly to her house. She realized she could have flown home the whole time. A month later, she went to the lighthouse with her daughter, Seed. She told her about the time she fell into the ocean and warned her not to go too near the cliffs.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 61 Zarrin’s Pages (continued) THE CRAZY LIGHT MAN AND THE FIVE KIDS by Zarrin One day in 1984, two men came to a lighthouse, THE lighthouse. They opened the door. Nobody was there, as he says, but then a thump comes from the top of the lighthouse. Then bang, man number 2 says, “What was that?” and then they see the crazy light man coming at them. Then the men that were at the lighthouse are gone just like that. 40 years later, it’s a nice day, a sunny day. Five men who have been friends for 11 years just got out of school and are going to check out a lighthouse, THE same lighthouse where the two men were last seen or heard of. They all are pumped up in the car. As they get out, James says, “I don’t have a good feeling.” Jay, Jimmy, Josh, and Solo all say, “Shut up, James.” James says, “Okay…” “It’s like home,” Jay says. “Solo, you’re the biggest, go in first.” Solo says, “No, James, you go in first.” James walks in and opens the door, and they all walk in just like last time. Then bang, they all get chills, and then… Solo is gone. Same with James, then Josh, all gone. The twins, Jimmy and Jay, say, “Come out NOW,” and then the light man comes out. As he floats down saying, “Your dads were not with you in childhood,” Jay says, “No, don’t tell me…” as the light man says, “I murdered your dad and then his friend.” Jay hits him in the head, and the light man hits back as Jimmy hits him with a can in the head, taking him down. Then Jimmy and Jay get Solo, Josh, and James as they see the light man get away. Solo grabs him and puts him through a window. He comes out and then gets hit with a can and then is shot 8 times. They all are happy, but they don’t see the light man get up as he grabs the gun. Then he gets weak and falls in the water, and then the friends stand tall at the end.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 63 Exploring the Lighthouse A Big Thank-You And finally, but most of all, we want to thank Principal Cory Meausette and Teachers Paul Pepin and Katie Spriezl, and in particular the students at John Muir Elementary School for making this project so enjoyable. We want to thank Tom Harris - Telus, for donating the cellphone cameras for the students to use. Without this support, the program would not have been possible. This project was carried out by the Society’s partners: Change Canada Consultants Ltd. Our thanks to them: Ian Fawcett (coordinator & photographer), Kathleen Arnason (author and story-teller) and Bill Turner (for helping develop and implement the program). This project was conducted in partnership with the National Trust for Land & Culture (BC), who provided technical assistance and equipment throughout the project. Our thanks also to SPLPS volunteers for helping at the site and with the setup of the program, and to the Society’s members and supporters who provided the financing for the program. Our thanks to the District of Sooke for providing a Community Grant to help finance the program.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 64 Exploring the Lighthouse Raising Funds to Protect the Lighthouse And finally, something a little different... Just like our heritage...don’t discard it, look again! Projects such as the protection and restoration of Sheringham Point Lighthouse depend upon the generosity of people who care about what we are trying to accomplish, and who want to help. Much of the funding for this project so far has been provided by individuals who have stepped forward to make a donation. However, in order to ensure that the Lighthouse can be well cared for in the future, and to enable us to continue providing educational opportunities at the Lighthouse - such as this program - we need to raise additional funds. Can you help? We have set up a fundraising page on the Society’s website to make it easy to donate (all donations over $10.00 will receive a charitable tax receipt). You can find it at: https://sheringhamlighthouse.ca/get-involved-2/make-a-donation/ THANK YOU! Anyone who takes photographs knows that things don’t always turn out as planned. A click at the wrong time, a shake of the camera or a wrong setting can produce something entirely unintended. Often, the results of these situations are simply discarded. But sometimes, with a bit of luck, and with a willingness to look again with a fresh eye and an open mind, the results can be startling. We’ve collected a number of the images created by the children during their visit to the lighthouse that didn’t quite turn out as intended, but that struck us as beautiful abstract images nontheless. We’ve called this collection “UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES”, and we hope they will inspire you to look again at our heritage treasures like Sheringham Point Lighthouse, and make a donation to help us ensure its conservation. Take a look at these few samples on the next page, we think you’ll be amazed!
