Ecole Poirier - Division 4.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 51 Katana’s Pages (continued) Lighthouse Keeper told everyone “No more going to each other’s lands!” Everyone was silent and slowly and sadly walked back to their own lands. Mermaids went back to the ocean, Wizards and Witches back to Hogwarts and Pokemon back to their meadows. 100 years later everything was still the same, except the King/Lighthouse Keeper had passed just after the big fight. So there was a new lighthouse keeper, a Queen this time, named Zenna , with her royal pet Snom. Queen Zenna was pretty young, because her parents had passed just after she was born. Anyway, in the land of mermaids there was the most beautiful mermaid in the land, named Violet. She was stunning. On her tail there were all sorts of purples, blues and greens. Luscious chocolatey brown hair. Her eyes were green like the meadows. Amazing glasses that had little seashells and pearls. Now to the wizarding world, there was an awesome witch named Katana. She was smart, kind, funny, but most of all she stood up for herself and Katana did not have any friends. Katana had dark brown hair with beautiful blue eyes. Now to the meadows filled with Pokemon, amazing creatures. There were two Pokemon friends, Furret and Vaporeon. There used to be three Furret, Vaporeon and Snom, but Snom got taken by Queen Zenna. Meanwhile, in the sea, Violet was in school wishing she had some friends. And you would think she would have some friends because she is the most beautiful mermaid in the land, but she was all alone. The night came soon and Queen Zenna had to turn on the lighthouse. Now in Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry Katana was having an awesome time playing wizard’s chess. She could beat everybody in chess. Soon she had played everybody in Hogwarts and she got bored playing the same people day after day. She really needed a new challenger. Anyway, Katana started wondering what if there are more lands out there besides Hogwarts. THE THREE LANDS (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 52 Violet was in school and started history. She hated history, but she went anyway. Her teacher started talking about how, one hundred years ago, there were two more lands that did not have mermaids in them. There were wizards, witches and even little and big creatures called Pokemon. The next day Violet’s class learned about different types of Pokemon, and the Pokemon she really wanted was a Vaporeon. The next day, Katana learned about history like Violet. Except they learned about Mermaids and Pokemon. So that night, Katana escaped her land. And she got an amazing idea to go get the huge dragon that guarded Gringotts, the Hogwarts bank. The dragon was named Gena, and had pretty cool silver and gold scales. So Katana went to see if she could find friends in the other lands. So she started her journey. That same night Violet had an idea to try going on land to see if she could see the lighthouse. One night Furret and Vaporeon started to miss Snom and wanted their friend back. What Katana,VioKatana’s Pages (continued) THE THREE LANDS (cont.) let,Furret and Vaporeon don’t know is that Queen Zenna was guarding all of the lands, to make sure nobody escaped their land. So that night everybody started their journey. Katana got Gena the dragon and rode the dragon to a land filled with meadows and Pokemon. Katana hopped off Gena and looked at each and every Pokemon there were some in the water, some on land and even some in the air. Then all of the sudden Katana saw something in the water bigger than all of the Pokemon. It almost looked like… “Ahhhhhh!” Katana screamed, as she saw the creature splash out of the water. Katana’s mouth dropped, it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. A mermaid. As the mermaid swam on to land, the mermaid’s tail transformed into legs. Katana said “Did you know your tail could do that?” The mermaid replied “Nope.” Katana then said “Hi, my name is Katana. I’m a witch. You are…?” “Violet, and I’m a mermaid, as you could probably tell.” cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 53 Katana’s Pages (continued) THE THREE LANDS (cont.) Katana and Violet talked for a bit until they heard, (CRASH,BOOM,BANG!!!). Katana, Violet and the Gena went to see if they could find the noise. They looked around in the meadows and they found a forest, so they looked inside and saw two Pokemon, Furret and Vaporeon. Violet screamed and ran to Vaporeon and gave Vaporeon a big hug. And when Furret saw Katana, Furret was jumping all over her. And it turns out Vaporeon and Furret looked like they were just getting ready for an adventure as well. But to figure out more, Katana used a spell with her wand (because she was a witch, after all). The spell let them be able to understand Furret and Vaporeon, so they could tell them what they were trying to do. Vaporeon sounded frightened and worried. Furret sounded like she was trying not to cry. Then Furret stopped and said “Me and Vaporeon are trying to find our friend, Snom. Queen Zenna stole him.” Then, all of a sudden, Violet and Katana could not understand Furret and Vaporeon any more. Then Katana said, the spell must have worn off. That night they set up camp in the meadows with Furret and Vaporeon. The next morning they woke up, gathered all of their stuff, and set off together. So, in one boat there is Katana, Furret and Vaporeon and swimming next to them was Violet. It started to get dark again and then, all of a sudden, there was a bright light shining just on them. And then somebody yells out “Hey! You’re supposed to be in your own lands!” It is the lighthouse keeper Queen Zenna. Vaporeon and Furret started going crazy. Violet said “Over there, it’s Snom!!!” Vaporeon and Furret started crying because they had just reunited with Snom. Then for some reason Queen Zenna started crying. Katana and Violet were confused, so they asked “What’s wrong?” Queen Zenna said “I’ve just been so lonely for so long, and have never had any friends except for Snom.” Violet, with her comforting words said “I have never had any friends.” Then Katana said “I have always been lonely, and it would be nice to have some friends.” Then they all said at once “Why don’t we all be friends?” And then they all laughed and became besties forever. THE END.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 55 THE MYSTERIOUS HILL by Kelly Kelly’s Pages (continued) Long ago, there was a hill. Before the hill, there was a lighthouse. On the hill, my grandma told me the rumor of the hill. My friend and I – by the way, my name is Duck – like to play soccer. And I’m kind, in my opinion, and we have a good relationship. My friend’s name is John, and he is tall and likes to play basketball. We have been friends since kindergarten. Let’s get to the story. While studying the hill, we thought there might be a lighthouse buried within it because after the lighthouse disappeared, it left no ruins or parts behind. So tonight, we’re going to start digging into the hill. We’re gonna use the newest shovels in town, the super diggers. When it was midnight, we met at my house. Then we started running to the hill. We saw the glamour of the hill. It was off of a cliff above the sea. And it was really mysterious. We began digging, and suddenly we saw the top of the dark lighthouse. Hurray! We found it, then all of a sudden, something rose and we felt a cold chill go down our spines. Out of the lighthouse— it was the Grim Reaper. We jumped. It had a long scythe and a black hooded cloak. It spoke a weird language. We started to run as fast as we could. We ran to my house, shut the door, and decided never to go back again and not to tell anybody. The End

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 56 Leo’s Pages ANT’S VIEW “I chose this photo because it looks cool..” Leo’s Photo Selection: SHINY WHALE AND THE LIGHTHOUSE by Leo One foggy night on a cargo ship heading to Vancouver, there was a man named Tom Massic, a mechanic who likes to fix things. He always liked tacos but he hated vanilla. As a kid, he liked fixing broken lego builds and drawers. He’s normally happy, but now he’s tired. He was on the upper deck when there was a massive “thunk” noise, followed by a siren and red flashing lights. He freaked out. He saw something shiny coming out of the water. While he was putting on his life jacket, BAM! Darkness. The ship turned over. One day later, he woke up on a beach. It was a nice beach. Out of the corner cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 57 Leo’s Pages (continued) of his eye, he saw a lighthouse. Cold and hungry, he walked to the old white lighthouse with red stripes and broken glass windows. Strong wind. And hail. It felt like a million small sharp needles chipping against you. Tom kicked the door open, sat down, and called for help. A few hours later, a rescue boat came. While riding back to Victoria on the boat, Tom asked “Do you have any food? I’m starving.” The boat driver passed him a granola bar. “Uhh! Vanilla,” Tom thought. Then he felt the boat shake. He saw a tail. It looked like a whale’s tail but was a shining gray color. It started to bolt towards the boat. He remembered the shiny thing he saw before his ship crashed. “Oh no! It’s going to flip the boat,” he thought. Surprisingly, it stopped right in front of the boat. For some reason, it looked friendly this time. He let his intrusive thoughts win and got on to the whale. The boat driver was still in shock. The whale let out an “Ouhhhh.” But instead of dunking him, the whale swam away with its back out of the water. “I can’t believe it. I’m riding a whale,” he thought. “Hey. Why did you flip the ship?” It let out another “Ouhhhh.” “I don’t know what that means, but I’m pretty sure it was a good reason,” he thought. When the whale was a baby, it got lost from its mom in a storm. It was washed up on a beach. Luckily, there was a kind old Chinese man named Zhang Liu (the lighthouse keeper) who rolled him back into the water, before giving him a bucket of small fish. Over time, they became friends. Zhang named the whale Jing. Every day at 6 PM, they would meet at the lighthouse to give Jing his daily bucket of fish. Zhang never had any children, so he saw Jing as a son. The townspeople now remember him as “the whale guy” or “the whale tamer”. The fishermen wanted him to befriend the whale, then catch it for caviar. He said no and that it was a horrible idea. Sadly, the lighthouse keeper died of old age, so Jing kept the lighthouse safe, in his honor. The cargo ship that Jing flipped was carrying bricks and metal, to tear down the lighthouse and build a factory. Jing couldn’t let that happen, so he flipped the ship. Then he saw Tom and thought of Zhang. Back to the present day. Now Jing has a new owner. Tom was still a bit angry, but when he’s riding Jing all his anger drains away like magic and he forgives Jing. Now they’re besties and eat chocolate chip muffins and fish by the beach every night. THE END. SHINY WHALE AND THE LIGHTHOUSE (cont.)

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 59 Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT by Lillian CHAPTER ONE One night, there was a 16-year-old girl named Valentina. As she was going to sleep, her phone rang. Valentina thought it was strange because it was eleven o’clock. She answered the phone anyway. A sigh of relief came out of her as she realized it was just her friend Tayla. “Tayla, you won’t believe this!” Valentina said. “What?” Tayla said, unfazed. “Seriously, Tayla, this is important,” said Valentina. “Okayyyyy,” said Tayla. “We just finished moving. AND WE LIVE BY A LIGHTHOUSE!” replied Valentina. “Cool! Who owns it? Can you go in? Is it tall?” asked Tayla. “My dad owns it. But we don’t get the keys until next Sunday from the old owners. So, no, we can’t go in yet. And yeah, it’s pretty tall,” replied Valentina. “When can I come overrrr?” asked Tayla. “Well, we haven’t unpacked yet, so not for a few days, but I’ll let you know,” replied Valentina. “Okay! Well, I gotta go now. My mum is yelling at me to go to sleep,” said Tayla. “BYE!” said Valentina as she hangs up. As she was going to sleep, there was a knock on the door. “Whattt?” asked Valentina tiredly and annoyed. “Go to sleep, Valentina,” says her dad, John. “I was, but then Tayla called me. And then… you came to tell me to go to sleep,” states Valentina, annoyed. “Oh. Goodnight, Val,” says John, and then he leaves the room. CHAPTER TWO The next morning, Valentina woke up to the harsh wind hitting her window. She checked her alarm clock, and it was only 5:30 am. She got up and cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 60 walked to the kitchen to get water. She looked out the window by the front door. And it was bright out. “Why is it bright out?” thought Valentina. She put on her shoes and stepped outside. The light came from the lighthouse by the rocks. “Huh, the lighthouse isn’t supposed to work,” thought Valentina. A brisk wind slashed across her face. Besides the cold wind, it looked like a summer afternoon. “It’s very weird. I didn’t know that lighthouses were so bright,” thought Valentina. She started walking towards the lighthouse. As she stepped foot in front of the glowing tower, she heard a noise inside the lighthouse. It sounded like a bird or a dog rustling in the bushes, but it was inside. Another cold brisk wind slashed across her whole body, giving her a harsh shiver down her whole torso. She quickly ran back to the house. She quickly slammed the door open, then closed. Valentina ran up the stairs to her dad’s room. She opened his door. “DAD?! The lighthouse’s light is on, and t-there was a rustling noise coming from the lighthouse. And the damn light woke me up. It’s sooooo bright,” said Valentina quickly. “Huh? Valentina, it’s so early. And slow down while you talk,” says her dad. “Ok, ok. The lighthouse is on with a very unusually bright light. So I went to check it out, and there were weird rustling noises coming from inside,” said Valentina at a normal pace this time. “It’s probably an automatic light. And the rustling noise is probably the wind. Now go back to bed, Valentina. I’ll call the old owners in the morning,” said her dad. “Okay, I’ll go back to sleep, and sorry for waking you up,” said Valentina, annoyed that her dad didn’t worry about it as much as her. Valentina left his room, and walked down three doors to her room, and quickly fell asleep after closing the curtains. She woke up at 7:30 am. She checked her clock and yelled, “DAD, WHY DIDN’T YOU WAKE ME UP? SCHOOL STARTS AT 8:15!” Yelled ValentiLillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 61 na throughout the house. “I THOUGHT YOU WERE AWAKE!” yelled back her dad. She made it to school at 8:10. CHAPTER THREE “VAL!” screamed her friend Tayla from her locker. “Haiii, Tayla,” replied Valentina tiredly. “Girl, why are you so tired?” asked Tayla. “Long story,” said Valentina. “We’ve got ti—” “RING!” “Guess we don’t. Tell ya at lunch!” said Valentina while slamming her locker door. Valentina’s first class was math. Valentina really hated math, not because she was bad at it, but because she hated some of the people in her group project. And she just found it annoying. Even if she was the 4th smartest person in the class. Her classmates didn’t think so because she was always drawing something on the back of her paper. “Hey guys,” said Valentina to her group. “Hey,” said her classmate Angelica. “Hi,” said another one of her classmates named Marco. “Where’s Mason?” asked Valentina. “I don’t know,” replied Angelica. “I heard he’s with his friends at McDonald’s, skipping school,” stated Marco. “With what friends?” asked Valentina. “I think it was Phill, Ren, Bailey, and Oakley,” replied Marco. “Really? I didn’t think Mason was friends with Bailey and Oakley,” said Angelica. “Me neither,” said Valentina. “Do I have to remind THIS group to STOP talking?” said their teacher, Mr. Winston, from behind Valentina’s left shoulder. “Sorry!” said Marco, Angelica, and Valentina at the same time. “I think they’re dating…. But it’s just a rumor,” whispers Marco. “NO WAY!” said Valentina. “Shhh,” said Marco and Angelica together. “Oh, and Marco, if it’s just a rumor, why would you believe it?” whispers Angelica. “Okay, anyway, let’s get to work,” said Valentina. After math, Valentina had art. While walking to the art room, some random kid walked up to her and gave her a note. It read: “From Tayla: I’m in the principal’s office. UGH.” Valentina was absolutely shocked. Tayla was the kind of person to never get in trouble. Valentina quickly ran up to Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 62 the principal’s office. To her surprise, Tayla was sitting at the principal’s desk, looking like she could cry. Valentina rushed into the office. “Hi…” said Tayla with a sad undertone. “Uhm, what’s going on?” asked Valentina. The principal gave her a sharp stare. “Tayla, why don’t you tell her what you did,” said the principal. “Uhm, okay. I-I was walking to the gym and I saw Liam bullying Quin. Since Quin is my step-cousin, I couldn’t stand just watching, so I may or may not have p-punched Liam. But just in the arm! And now I’m here,” said Tayla, ashamed. Valentina rolled her eyes. “What was Liam bullying Quin about?” asked Valentina. “About her weight,” replies Tayla. Valentina was shocked. “Mrs? Tayla only punched him in the arm after he bullied Quin about her weight. And now she’s in trouble?” asked Valentina furiously. “Well, boys will be boys,” replies the principal. Valentina was raging mad. “How long will Tayla be here?” asked Valentina. “For the next period,” said the principal. “Okay… see you at lunch, Tayla,” said Valentina, madly. At lunch, Valentina filled in Tayla about everything that happened the previous night. After school, Valentina took the bus back to her house. CHAPTER FOUR Once Valentina got home from school, she went into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. While stirring the tea, Valentina’s dog Bagel brushed up against her leg. Valentina smiled, took a sip of her tea, then went up to her room to study. Suddenly, two cars pulled up to the driveway. There was a knock on the door. She opened the door to her dad and his friends. Valentina hates, ABSOLUTELY HATES her dad’s friends because they weren’t good people. They all smoked and had probably robbed a store once. “Hi,” said Valentina. “Hey kid,” mumbled her dad’s friend, Weston. “Dad, have you talked to the old owners of the lighthouse yet?” asked Valentina. “Yes, they said that’s not normal and it’s never happened. It hasn’t turned on in 50 years since Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 63 it was abandoned. But it’s fine because we don’t really own it. But I did get the keys,” replied John, her dad. “Well, can I go i—” she said but couldn’t finish because her dad and his friends walked away to the garage. Valentina snuck into her dad’s car and took the keys to the lighthouse. As she was walking to the lighthouse, it started to rain and became very foggy. She walked in front of the lighthouse and put in the rusty keys. As she tried to twist the keys, they wouldn’t twist. She tried and tried, but it wouldn’t work. As she was about to give up, she tried one more time. “CLICK.” She couldn’t believe it when the door unlocked! But still, she tried to push open the door, but it was jammed. She tried again and again and again, but it wouldn’t budge. The rain poured down even harder. The rain was a brisk cold stinging feeling. After her 23rd try, the door opened with a slam, and the keys fell to the ground. “Geez, this door is ANNOYING, just Like my principal,” thought Valentina. As she walked through the door, a small picture was hung on the wall. The picture was a quite big painting of an old looking man. The man had gray, short hair with a hairline that runs away from his eyes. He had a really wrinkly forehead. “Geez I hope I don’t have THAT many wrinkles when I’m old,” thinks Valentina. She wiped off the dust on the painting and saw that the man looked really unusual. She looked around the rest of the room and saw that there was a journal sitting on a small rounded table. She picked it up and flipped through the pages of the journal. On about the 14th page, there was a note that read “The painting is great, but it acts like a gate.” “What the heck? This old man must be crazy,” thought Valentina. She looked in the last corner of the room and saw an old dresser. “What the heck would be in here?” She opened it and saw a candlestick. She carefully picked up the candlestick and placed it on the wooden table. She decided to walk up the stairs. With every step she took, the stairs creaked. Once she got upstairs, she could hear the wind howling against the lighthouse. While upstairs, she also found a smallLillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 64 er painting of a lady. She looked like Valentina but about 10 years older. The lady had blonde hair like Valentina. And green eyes, also like Valentina. She resembled Valentina’s mother who had died when Valentina was ten – so six years ago. But her mom was also older than the lady in the painting. Her mom was 41 when she died. Valentina didn’t think much about the painting, until she looked at the bottom left corner. “Delania” was written in the corner. “Is that the name of the girl?” thought Valentina. As Valentina was looking at the painting, she heard a voice in her head. All it said was “Open the paint- “ but then the voice disappeared half way through. Valentina felt very dizzy all of a sudden. She fell to the floor, and hit her head on a pointy tiny rock. Her sight went black, but before she couldn’t see anything, she saw a weird looking girl – who looked like the girl from the painting. She woke up after about an hour, in the same place she fell. As she gained her senses, she checked her phone. It was 5pm. She stood up and heard another voice in her head continuing the last sentence. “…ing.” Valentina put it together in her head and rushed down the stairs. Once she got to the bottom, she looked at the painting. And it looked really unusual. She checked her phone one more time. 5:15pm. “Shoot, my Dad’s gonna be looking for me soon. She rushed out of the lighthouse so fast that she didn’t notice the girl standing behind the dresser. She opened her dad’s car and put the keys back into the cup holder, where she found them. She quietly opened the front door and tiptoed to her bedroom. She opened her bedroom door, ran to her bed, and flopped across her whole bed. She picked up her phone and called Tayla. “HEYYYYY!” said Tayla. “Hii,” said Valentina. “What’s up?” asked Tayla. “Lots of stuff, butttttt I was wondering if I could come over to your house tonight?” asked Valentina. “Yeah, let me ask my parents,” said Tayla. “They said yeah, if your dad’s fine with it,” replied Tayla. “Ugh, fine, I’ll go ask him. He’s with his stupid friends,” said Valentina. Valentina put down her phone and walked to the garage. “Dad? Can I go to Tayla’s House tonight? Pleaseee,” askes Valentina. “Yeah whatever, I’m not dropping you off though,” Says her dad. “K Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 65 thanks,” says Valentina. “Yeah I can come, but can you pick me up? My dad won’t drop me off,” says Valentina. “Yeah of course. I’ll get my mom to pick you up,” says Tayla. CHAPTER FIVE “C’mon. Valentina!” said Tayla at her front door. “Coming!” replied Valentina. “My mom said I have to stay here, because she has a meeting, so we can’t go to my house,” said Tayla sadly. “Okay….” said Valentina. “My dad should be fine with that,” said Valentina again. “Oh yeah...let’s go to the lighthouse,” said Tayla. “Okay….” replied Valentina. “KK THEN LETS GOOOOOO!” says Tayla happily. “Uhm, about the Lighthouse. It’s a little weird. I fainted while I was in it about an hour ago, and I’ve had voices in my head,” says Valentina. “Uhm, later then?” asks Tayla. “Sure…” says Valentina, unsure. They walked into Valentina’s house. “Hey hold on, let me tell my dad that you’re coming over.” says Valentina. “Uh okay,” says Tayla. Valentina walked over to the garage. “Hey Dad. Tayla’s mom has a meeting, so can Tayla come here instead?” asked Valentina. “Yeah, whatever. As long as I’m not cooking. You guys can sleep in the guest room, and I’ll order a pizza,” says her Dad. “Tayla’s vegetarian,” adds Valentina. “Well… my friends are just leaving, so I’ll go get some microwave soup for you guys,” says her dad. “Okay….” says Valentina. Valentina walked back to the entryway. “SOOOOO?” asks Tayla. “He said yes. But… for dinner we’re having microwave soup. But don’t worry, I’ll cook some stuff to go with it. Maybe we can make cookies!” says Valentina. “Okay,” said Tayla. Valentina and Tayla were walking upstairs to the guest bedroom. While they were walking, Valentina’s cat, named Bean, and her dog, Bagel, were fighting. Tayla instantly scooped up Bean. “Beannnnnnn! I’ve missed you!” says Tayla, happily. Valentina swung open the door to the guest room. “We’re gonna have to decorate, since we just moved.” After about 30 minutes they were done decorating. Tayla said “Can we go to the lighthouse now?” “Why not,” said Valentina. Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 66 They walked down stairs and into the garage and opened the door. “Hey dad, we’re going into the lighthouse for the FIRST time. I’ll just go get the keys from the car,” says Valentina. “How did you know the keys are in the car?” asks her dad. “SHOOT,” thought Valentina. “Uhm, you said you left them in the car when you and your friends came over….” replied Valentina. “Okay go get ‘em,” says her dad. As they were walking out to the car, Tayla asked “Did your dad not know you went in today?” “No not really, But it’s not my fault, he just left when I asked him.” replied Valentina. They made it to the car and Valentina quickly opened the door to the car and grabbed the keys. Once they got to the lighthouse, Valentina and Tayla struggled with the door to the lighthouse for about 5 minutes. “Gurlllll get that door fixed!” says Tayla. “I know I want to, but we technically don’t own it,” says Valentina. “M’kay,” says Tayla. They got into the lighthouse and Valentina saw something she didn’t see before. There was a Necklace with a big green and blue crystal. “What’s that?” asks Tayla, while pointing to the necklace. “I don’t know, I didn’t see it before when I was here last time,” replies Valentina. She looked back at the painting of the old weird looking man. She realizes, while looking at the painting, that there’s a weird dent in the painting. The dent weirdly matches the shape and size of the Crystal on the necklace. “Hey Tayla, look at this necklace…it fits in this dent of the painting,” says Valentina. “Put it in deeper, instead of hovering it!” says Tayla. “While earlier when I was in here, I heard a voice in my head that said the painting acts as a gate,” says Valentina. “That’s weird, but just do it. We don’t know what will happen,” says Tayla. “Yeah you’re right, we should just do it,” said Valentina. Valentina slowly pushed the necklace closer and closer. Suddenly her hand started shaking randomly. “My hand. It’s not stopping!” says Valentina “Uhm here!” says Tayla, while grabbing the necklace and pushing it into the hole of the painting. “Tayla NO!” screams Valentina. “It’s too late!” says Tayla. The Lighthouse started shaking and they could Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 67 hear the wind from outside bashing against the walls of the lighthouse. “What’s going on?” asks Tayla. “I don’t know!” says Valentina, scared. Suddenly the windows on the lighthouse shattered, falling to the ground, and the painting opened. As the painting swung open, the shaking stopped. “What?” said Tayla, confused. They walked into the hole the painting had left. There was a long hallway with lots of doors. “What the heck!?” said Tayla. “Where are we?” said Valentina. Tayla looked behind them and saw that the painting was still open. “Hey Valentina can we go bac-” “NO!” says Valentina, after she cut Tayla off. “What! No Valentina, I’m going back!” screams Tayla. “NO!” says Tayla. “What do you mean no?” asks Tayla, furiously. Tayla looked back down the hallway. Valentina was slowly walking down the hallway. “Valentina, are you okay?” asks Tayla. Valentina kept walking, and turned into one of the doors. Tayla ran after her as fast as she’s ever ran. Tayla quickly turned into the room that Valentina went into. Tayla heard a slamming sound. She whipped her head around and saw that the painting was closed and the necklace had been left outside. Valentina fell to the ground crying. “Val, are you okay?” asks Tayla softly. “No, I don’t know what happened, but we can go back now. I don’t want to come back here ever again,” says Valentina. “About that, the painting closed…” says Tayla. “N-No, I’m going back. I can’t go back,” says Valentina while crying. “Don’t worry, please, you’ll be fine!” says Tayla. “NO LET ME BACK OUT!” screams Valentina. “No, we will be fine.” Says Tayla. “No you won’t… look around…” says a voice in Valentina’s head and then, quickly, Tayla’s head. “Did you hear that too?” asks Tayla. “Y-Yeah,” says Valentina. “Ok, look around slowly,” says Tayla. As they were looking around, they saw that there was a clock in the room, a desk and a lot of paper, and nothing else. Tayla turned around to open the door. They started to walk down the hallway into another room. The room was the exact same… “Tayla this lighthouse is some sort of labyrinth…” says Valentina. “I know. We need to get out of here,” says Tayla. “I’m so sorry, Valentina. I shouldn’t have made us go inside. Valentina Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 68 I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have!” says Tayla, sadly. “Thanks, but I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have let us come in here. Then I started acting really weird. I’m just so sorry,” says Valentina, crying. They both sat down and were completely silent with no noise, except for the ticking clock. “TICK TOCK. TICK TOCK.” A while later, there was a noise coming through the long hallway. It was like a knocking noise, coming from the painting area. They ran out of the room without thinking. They ran towards the painting and screamed “Please help us, PLEASE!” Suddenly, there was a big bang coming from outside. They could hear lots of tiny footsteps. They could also hear a dog barking. “Omg is that Bagel!?” asks Tayla. “I-I think so!!!” says Valentina. Tayla pulled on the back of the painting. They could hear Bagel trying to break the painting. The painting fell to the ground with a crash. The hole in the wall revealed not Bagel, but an alpha wolf. “Omg it’s the Alpha I saw in my dream!” says Tayla. “You had that dream too?” They were extremely happy and the lighthouse was closed for the rest of time. Tayla, Valentina, her Dad, and her pets lived happily ever after with the alpha wolf. Lillian’s Pages (continued) DEEP IN THE LIGHT (cont.)

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 70 Michelle’s Pages (continued) THE HIDDEN ROOM OF THE LIGHTHOUSE by Michelle Once upon a time, in a tiny village by the sea, there was a curious girl named Michelle. One sunny day, while looking for colorful seashells, Michelle found an old lighthouse standing all by itself. The door of the lighthouse was open just a bit. Excited, Michelle pushed the door open and went inside. It smelled like the sea and old things. She saw stairs, and she was curious to find something at the top. And she was excited. Twisting all the way to the top and climbing up, the steps creaking under her feet. At the top, instead of a light, there was a secret door hidden behind a picture. Michelle opened the door and discovered a tiny, dusty room that looked like a secret hideout. In the room, there was a small box. It was locked, but fortunately, the key was right there, hanging on a wall hook. Michelle unlocked the box and found colorful gems. She picked up a gem and it was glowing. She was so excited! Thrilled by her discovery, she had to decide what to do next, to keep the treasure a secret. She ran down the stairs, her heart racing with her secret. Outside, the sun was setting, making the sea look like it was sparkling. Michelle looked back at the lighthouse and felt happy and mysterious. She knew that she would come back to explore more soon!

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 72 THE HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE by Odin Odin’s Pages (continued) One foggy night I was walking past the old Lighthouse. Oh, by the way, my name is ODIN, and I live up the Hill from the old Lighthouse. So, I was walking past the old Lighthouse and the light was on. That was weird, because the Lighthouse was abandoned. So I went to check what was going on. When I entered the Lighthouse, the lights went out. The door slammed shut, and then cold hands grabbed me, but I got away. I ran to my house. Later that night I called my friends Kelly, Leo and Sami, and we went to the Lighthouse. And we saw a light in the Lighthouse. I had I plan, that I would be bait and my friends would jump him. So I went in the Lighthouse, and the light went out. Then I saw 5 bad guys, and that was weird because I thought that there was only 1. So they tied me up and blindfolded me and carried me up the hill. And then my friends jumped them. About 15 minutes later, my friends untied me. They said that they had captured 1 of the bad guys, and they had tied him up. And they had called the police to arrest him. So later, my friends and me went to my house and decided to look for the bad guys. So my friends and me split up in 2 groups. Group 1 went south, and group 2 went west. I was in group 1, and we saw footprints, so we followed the footprints and they led to an abandoned house. So I went to the door and put my ear on the door, and I heard the bad guys taking. So I told Kelly to call the police. 5 minutes later, the police arrived and surrounded the house, but the bad guys saw and they tried to escape. But the police captured them. So later we called the other group and told them the news. So that is the haunted lighthouse.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 74 THE POKEMON AT THE LIGHTHOUSE by Rory Rory’s Pages (continued) Avery is a lighthouse keeper who feels lonely and depressed. Her dreams were to be a Lighthouse Keeper. She came from a poor family. That is why she lonely and depressed. The lighthouse, located very far from the nearest town, named Ghostville, is surrounded by a spooky atmosphere, contributing to her sadness. Ghostville had a legend. The legend was that 4,000 people died there. Spirits live there. Avery has a secret talent, she uses it for self-defense: she can pick up a rock and make it float. One day, while using her talent, she sees a person. “OMG,” exclaims Avery as the person disappears. It turns out it was a Pokémon. She quickly becomes best friends with the Pokémon, because they bonded over their kindness and developed feelings for each other. They went on a walk on the Sandy Beach together. They find an egg and take it on walks. They take the egg on a bike ride down the beach . Then it hatches! It’s a white dragon, with a scaly neck and fire on its head. Avery’s reaction is one of surprise, and the Pokémon is even more astonished than Avery. The egg was scaly and cracked. After the excitement, Avery and the Pokémon ate Hawaiian pizza, dripping with cheese. They then went back to their beautiful, comfy bed.

Two hours later, I woke up at 3:00 a.m. I could not go to sleep because the boat was rocking side to side and up and down. My grandpa was still up looking at the sky. But I said to him “There’s no sky, it’s all dark.” And then he said “There’s going to be light in one minute.” So, I sat there waiting for the light. And there it was. “A lighthouse,” he said. And then he started to tell me about the rumor that the lighthouse was haunted, and that the lighthouse keeper died and he has been haunting it since 1924. He called him John. The reason they called him John was because when the police went to investigate the death they heard a little kid yelling “John! John!” After the news broke out everyone in the city was scared. Except me and my grandpa. We said that after we get back from fishing we would go investigate the old haunted lighthouse. When we got home, we started watching The News, and we heard that these two ghost hunters flew from Toronto to British Columbia. On the plane ride there, they booked a hotel. It was a really nice hotel, but in the description some people said that the hotel is haunted and old. And we heard that the ghost hunters were going to the haunted lighthouse. We decided to go with them. So we got in the car and started going to the haunted lighthouse. When we got there, we saw their car but not them. Turns out they were scouting out the lighthouse, and when they got back from scouting the place, they had two Coke’s in their hand. They said it will attract ghosts. We were ready to go ghost hunting, but I didn’t want to, so I told my grandpa I had a bad feeling about this place. So we went and told the ghost hunters that we were leaving, and when we got home, I put on the news. We could see the ghost hunters looking around, but there was nobody there. I called my grandpa to come see this. He came, and said the same thing. Nobody was there, so we called them and said “Is anybody there with you?” They said no and hung up. We started to go home because my grandpa was starting to get sick. And later, he died. THE END. HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE (cont.)

Then he hooked on to something giant. After a long, hard battle he finally got it to shore. As he was reeling it in, he realized it was a Pokemon. Not just any Pokemon, it was a Dragonite. Then, out of nowhere, Team Rocket came with a Wailord. They destroyed the lighthouse, so he had to one-shot them with his new Dragonite. The fisherman was still sad after his favorite place got destroyed. Then his Dragonite picked him up and brought him to an island with a Pokemon that would give him one wish. And the fisherman’s one wish was to repair the lighthouse. Then the fisherman remembered something from his childhood. He had a dream when he was a child that he wanted to be part of the master class of Pokemon. So then he began to battle his way up the ranks. Everything was going smooth until ultra class. His final battle in ultra class was with Lt. Surge, and it was a one v. one. Lt. Surge brought out his Pikachu and the fisherman brought his Dragonite. The fisherman’s Dragonite was losing to Lt.Surge’s Pikachu, then…the fisherman’s Dragonite summoned the Bidoof powers and one-shotted Lt. Surge’s Pikachu. And finally, he made it to master-class. But he has another dream, to catch every shiny Pokemon. The fisherman caught every shiny Pokemon, except one. BIDOOF! The strongest and rarest Pokemon and that’s when Dragonite mega evolved. Then the fisherman heard a beeping noise, and the fisherman woke up with three Pokemon next to him. Dragonite, Bidoof, and Tangela. Then the fisherman realized that the lighthouse was never destroyed, and it was all a dream. He only caught three shiny Pokemon, and he never got in the master class. The end. (bye)

The waves splashed against the rocks, the seagulls cried, and the smell of pine trees filled the air. A girl named Alba was in bed until a soft beam of light hit her arm. Alba’s one wish was to make a friend before her twelfth birthday, which was in two days. “Alba! It’s breakfast!” yelled her mother. As Alba walked down the stairs, she noticed that a new family had moved in across the street. The old white house finally had a family living in it. They had a mother, a father, and a girl about the same age as Alba, but breakfast was getting cold. Alba sat down at the table with her mom and dad. It was silent until her parents said, “Hey, sweetie, why don’t you go play with the neighbor girl?” “I- uh,” Alba’s heart started pumping like a race car. Alba often had social anxiety, so when she was asked to meet someone, she would get all nervous. “Could I just go play in the forest instead?” As her parents looked at each other, Alba knew they thought she’d never make any friends. So she took a deep breath. “I guess it wouldn’t hurt to say hi.” Her parents were shocked, and in some way, so was Alba. After breakfast, Alba went outside by herself, slowly walking to the new neighbors’ house. “I’m worried,” said her mother from inside the house. Alba got on the front porch of the neighbor’s house, it had a beautiful cottage core feeling. But before she could knock, the parents of the girl she saw answered. “Well, hello!” said the woman with a smile on her face. “You must be the girl that lives at the lighthouse. If you’re looking for Amaya, she left for camp,” said the father. “Is Amaya your daughter?” asked Alba. “She sure is! Why don’t you come back at 1:00?” Alba walked home, worried about the afternoon. A few hours had passed, and Alba forgot all about meeting Amaya, the neighbor girl. Alba was up in the lighthouse watching for whales when she heard footsteps walking up the stairs. “Hi,” said a soft and kind voice. “Your mother told me you were up here.” Alba stood in shock. “Who is here?!” thought Alba. Then Alba saw it was the neighbor girl, then she remembered. “Oh my, I totally forgot about coming to your house!” said Alba with shock and regret. Her face turned red like a tomato. “It’s okay. The next morning, one day until Alba’s birthday, Alba thought Amaya might be her only shot at getting a friend before tomorrow. “Alba, sweetie! Come down! You got a letter!” her parents called. At the table, there was a letter labeled ‘Alba.’ “Why don’t you open it?” said her father with a smile on his face. The closer Alba’s hand got to the letter, the more she worried about what was inside. “What if it’s a letter saying Amaya doesn’t like me? Wait, why would that be in a letter?” thought Alba. Silence filled the room as Alba opened the letter. “What does it say?” asked her father, in a worried but excited voice. A huge smile spread across Alba’s face. “Amaya invited me to a sleepover! I have a friend!” Alba was almost screaming with joy. Of course, she was nervous about the sleepover, but she had a friend! “It’s in a week, and other girls my age will be there too! Can I go? Can I?” Alba was so excited she wanted to punch the wall. “Of course, you can,” replied her mother. A few hours passed, and Alba was playing at the lighthouse near the ocean while her dad was turning on the light of the lighthouse. “Alba, hey!” It was Amaya’s voice! Amaya walked over, but before Alba could say hi back, her mother yelled, “Dinner!” “Amaya, could you stay here for a second?” asked Alba. “Sure.” Alba ran into the house and asked her mother, “Mom, could my new friend Amaya stay for dinner?” Her mother was shocked and overflowing with joy, but all she did was smile and say, “Sure.” That night after dinner, Alba did something she never thought would happen. “Hey Amaya, my birthday is tomorrow, and well, would you like to come over?” “Of course!” As they hugged each other, Alba knew she had at least one friend. The birthday was the greatest day of Alba’s life. They mostly played at the beach, but at the end of the day, Alba and Amaya got to turn on the light of the lighthouse. The day was over, and Alba walked Amaya home. “Thank you for inviting me today. I hope you had a great birthday.” They hugged, and Amaya left, but Alba had never been happier. Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 83 Zen’s Pages (continued) SECRET OF THE LIGHTHOUSE by Zen There once was a lighthouse, a very mysterious one. And there was a boy named Cale. He liked soccer, basketball and art. Cale was walking with his friends, Sunny and Clare. They both liked spooky stories. As they walked up to a beach, there was a lighthouse. It was strange that they’ve never seen it before. Cale said they should go inside, and Sunny and Clare agreed. So they went inside. Immediately they noticed cobwebs, and a creepy painting. Sunny saw a shimmering light that caught his eye. They all walked up to it, and they suddenly started getting sucked in. Cale grabbed both of their arms. As they were running out, Sunny noticed the light wasn’t there. Clare didn’t tell them. She couldn’t sleep that night. Suddenly she noticed another light. It crept closer, and then, BOOM! A big explosion. (AHHHHH! Oh just a dream). Cale said he would go get some water, and Sunny said he’d go with him. That meant Clare had to guard the camp. While Cale and Sunny were getting water, they heard a scream and they ran back. Clare was gone, and that only meant one thing… they looked at each other. The lighthouse, as they walked in it, was way bigger. It was like a mansion. In the center, they saw Clare. “It looks like she’s sleeping,” Sunny said. Suddenly something fell from the sky. “It looks like a shadow,” Cale said, but it just walked over to Clare. It started untying her. Then it walked over to them and it started to cry. “I think it wants to tell us something,” Sunny said. All of a sudden, something popped up in its mind. Blood, war, death…that’s all they saw. “Do you want help?” Cale asked. So they went back to camp and ate some candy and hot cocoa. They talked for a long time, around 2 hours, and they learned a lot from it. They learned that it’s the last survivor of its kind. And as the sun set, they talked about what they would do tomorrow. And they all lived happily ever after.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 85 Zenna’s Pages (continued) A GIRL WHO LOVES THE LIGHTHOUSE by Zenna Dalilah was lying on the floor. The carpet was fluffy and soft on her neck and hands. Dalilah was thinking quietly, dreading the new year of school to come. Dalilah was a shy and quiet girl, with a bright spark of curiosity. She had long, wavy brown hair and bright green eyes. She also had tortoiseshell glasses. The smells of dinner wafted tantalizingly from the kitchen. The sounds of her mother’s knife chopping veggies for their pasta dinner came into the living room. Dalilah was so, so very shy and school was miserable. She was too shy to participate in group projects and too quiet to speak up with the answer in class. Everyone teased her and called her “No Talk Kid.” The rhythmic sound of her mom’s knife chop chop chopping stopped as her mom washed some other veggies. Once the chopping had stopped, Dalilah was brought out of her trance of worrying. She still felt rather worried, so she did what she did when she was nervous. She went paddle boarding. “Hey Mom, can I go paddle boarding, please?” Her mom replied with a sigh, “Ok, I suppose you can go, but be back in time for dinner. It’s in one hour.” Before her mom had even finished her sentence, Dalilah was out the door. Their house was nestled on a charming four acres of Vancouver Island property. Their property had some trees that leaned down, blown by the wind, so none of the trees had grown all the way up. Their property was mostly moss-covered rocks and landscaped dirt. They also had a huge garden and a half farm, half rescue sanctuary for farm animals that had been abandoned and rescued from factory farms. Dalilah’s favorite animal was a Highland cow named Bessie. Highland cows were so fluffy, sometimes you could not see their eyes. That was the case for Bessie. Dalilah started running towards their dock where they kept the paddle boards. “Hey Bessie!” she said as she shot past. Their property was extremely rocky and steep, so you got momentum fast running down. It was dangerous for most to run down as fast as Dalilah often went. Except Dalilah ran down their property almost every day. She skidded to a halt at the bottom of the hill. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where are you going?” asked her dad, who was going up to the animal pens to feed the cont...

There was the garden hose, the sprinkler, the rake, the deflated beach ball, and much, much more. Finally, after much digging, Dalilah found the paddle boards. Hers was the smallest one, even so, it wasn’t extremely small. Dalilah had a turquoise and white striped board with bungee cords that crossed at the front of the paddle board. “Remember your lifejacket!” hollered her dad from the top of the slope. “Ughhh. Fine,” yelled back Dalilah, “Even though I don’t need it,” she muttered to herself. Even so, Dalilah obediently put on her lifejacket and picked up her paddle. She carefully stepped onto the family’s rickety dock, which was just a few planks of wood held together with nails and resting on the water. Wood logs that were vertical in the water kept the wood planks from drifting away. Carefully, Dalilah slid onto her paddle board and pushed off the dock onto the surface of the ocean. With care, Dalilah stood up on her paddle board and dipped her paddle into the water. Lap lap lap, the water sloshed against the side of the board as Dalilah paddled on. Her favorite place to go was a secret to everyone else. Her favorite place was the lighthouse. It was abandoned and forgotten, except for Dalilah. Nobody knew the lighthouse was even there anymore, except for Mira of course. Mira was a seal that lived on the rocks with her family by the lighthouse. She was Dalilah’s best friend. As Dalilah paddled slowly up to the lighthouse, the size and majesty of the place took her breath away. It always did. Not even her family knew about the lighthouse. A small splash broke her trance and she looked up hopefully. Mira swam under the paddle board. “Hey, Mira!” she called happily. Except, when Mira surfaced she looked all agitated. “Mira, what’s wrong?” Mira promptly turned and swam toward the rocks. Worried, Dalilah paddled quickly after Mira. Mira burst out of the water and onto the rocks and turned her nose towards the shore. Looking back intently at Dalilah, she waited for her to paddle up and park her board nearby. Then, Mira gave a short bark and turned her head up again. Now that Dalilah was closer to the shore, she heard loud machinery and the soft sound of whirring along with the smell of gasoline. Frantic now, Dalilah sprinted up the hill and stumbled onto flat ground, and had a small heart attack. The beautiful lighthouse, with its overgrown wildflowers and steep rock cliffs, was about A GIRL WHO LOVES THE LIGHTHOUSE (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 87 Zenna’s Pages (continued) to be destroyed. Huge machinery was slowly rolling in and there were people everywhere. People shuffling papers. People controlling equipment. People having snack breaks. People putting seals in cages. People— wait what?! Dalilah bolted over to the people who were—gently—stuffing seals into cages. Dalilah gasped softly. No! Thought Dalilah, her voice never worked in large crowds. Panicking, Dalilah struggled to speak; she would not give up. Then, she saw Mira, struggling to get free. Anger boiled inside her and she shouted at the people who held Mira, “Let her go!” she yelled. Suddenly, it got very, very quiet. Dalilah froze. All the machines stopped whirring, all of the people stopped speaking, and all the gulls stopped squawking. Dalilah was extremely still. “What is a child doing here?” asked someone who she assumed was the boss. His name tag on his vest said his name was Dave. “Let her go,” repeated Dalilah in a low hiss of a voice. She was startled by the coldness in her own voice, but she didn’t let it show. “Let who go?” asked Dave, genuinely confused. Dave looked like an average man with black, spiky hair and ordinary brown eyes. He had a superior face that Dalilah guessed was for show, since he didn’t seem very confident. Dalilah hated him already. “The seal, let her go,” Dalilah nodded at the cage with Mira in it. “Let her family go too.” Confused and startled, the people let Mira and her family swim away. With a twinge of sorrow, Dalilah watched her only friends swim away. “Now, stop breaking the lighthouse.” Dave was impressed with Dalilah’s courage and said, “Ok kid, you can have your way. EVERYONE, TIME TO GO.” To Dalilah’s alarm and delight, everyone packed up and began to leave until it was just Dalilah standing there. “Oh crap!” cried Dalilah. “I got to get home!” A short and very fast paddle later, Dalilah stumbled through the threshold, gasping for breath. “Where were you?” asked her mom with a sigh. “Ummm,” said Dalilah, thinking fast. “Uh, I…I was… I was swimming.” Come on, Dalilah! You can do better than that! Her mom took it, though. “Well, it’s time for dinner,” said her mom. Grateful for the excuse, Dalilah ran to the dinner table and sat down with her dad. Her dad didn’t ask questions through dinner or when she was brushing her teeth or when she clambered into bed. Things went downhill from there. She woke up, ate breakfast, and patiently waited for the bus, drove to school and got off. Dalilah’s school was a nice one, except for one tiny, tiny thing. It was the most boring, polite place ever. Everyone wore the exact same gray uniform and the whole school had a very stiff politeness to it. As kids, everyone wanted to run and play and tease each other, but nobody could. Dalilah surveyed the school. It looked the same as usual, with its A GIRL WHO LOVES THE LIGHTHOUSE (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 88 Zenna’s Pages (continued) perfectly even green field at the back of the school and its perfect boring playground equipment. They only had a set of monkey bars that were too high to reach and a VERY short metal slide that hurt to go down in the summer when it got hot. As though an invisible wave had covered Dalilah, her throat closed and she stood, silent, on the field. The bell rang and all the students walked slowly to their classrooms, Dalilah with them. Dalilah slowly stepped up the stairs to the classroom that would torture her for a whole year. The classroom was nice, bright, and airy. Desks were set up across the room, front to back, and her teacher’s name was neatly printed on a folded card in cursive. Miss… Dalilah squinted at the name in cursive; it was very hard to read. Miss…Joann? Dalilah thought it said Miss Joann. Alright, we’ll go with Miss Joann for now; she has to say her name at some point. Dalilah gave a little shrug and walked over to the cubbies and picked one at the end, as she always did. Then, Dalilah chose a desk in the middle of the back row of the classroom, as she always did. One more year, she thought. Then, I’m going to middle school. No more hiding there. If I get lost, I’ll need to be able to ask for help, and if I don’t understand, I’ll need to be able to raise my hand and ask. Lost in her thoughts, she didn’t realize that there was a person there who was watching her. The girl had dark brown hair that was well brushed. Even so, the girl’s hair was bursting past her restraints, the headband was buried far into her hair. The girl’s skin was tanned and her face was freckled. She wore a striped shirt and jeans that were ripped in a cool way. “Hi!” said the girl, giving Dalilah a heart attack. “Gahh!?” cried Dalilah, who fell off her chair with fright and confusion. “Woah, you’re really jumpy!” said the strange girl. “My name is Tulane. What’s yours?” “Uh, m-my n-n-name? It’s Dalilah,” she finished awkwardly. “Oh, that’s nice!” said Tulane. “Want to be friends?” “O-ok,” Dalilah said, still not sure how she was speaking AT SCHOOL. “Great!” said Tulane brightly, and moved a rather startled classmate out of their chair and plonked her stuff down right beside Dalilah’s. “Do you want to hear a story about the time I…” Great, thought Dalilah, I befriended a chatterbox. School dragged on. Weeks flew by in a blur. One day, something broke through the class’s perpetual barrier they all set up to help them stay sane and unaffected by the boring stuff everyone was learning. To Dalilah’s surprise, Tulane was a new student to the school and was unaffected by boredom and always gave teachers headaches. The thing that broke through the boredom was this: “The whole class is expected to give a presentation about the environment and what we can do A GIRL WHO LOVES THE LIGHTHOUSE (cont.) cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 89 Zenna’s Pages (continued) to help it out.” For a moment, nobody spoke. Then, “Miss,” said Tulane, raising her hand and speaking at the same time without waiting to be called on. “Miss, I think that we should pair up,” she said, casting a sideways glance at Dalilah. “Fine,” said the teacher, sounding detached from the conversation already. Everyone paired up and Tulane paired with Dalilah and immediately started talking. “Should we do—” before Tulane finished talking, Dalilah had started talking and was explaining about the lighthouse and how they needed to save it. So they worked very hard and pulled together a presentation. On presentation day, Dalilah was nervous and ready at the same time. The presentation went well and they fundraised a lot of money. The whole school pitched in to help purchase all the things for the repair and helped fix the lighthouse, turning it into a museum and opening it to the public. Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 91 Exploring the Lighthouse A Big Thank-You And finally, but most of all, we want to thank Principal Tess Vally and teachers Lynelle Ridewood, Kevin Pearson, Zach Thompson and Mikayla Little, and in particular the students at École Poirier for making this project so enjoyable. We want to thank Tom Harris - Telus, for donating the cellphone cameras for the students to use. Without this support, the program would not have been possible. This project was carried out by the Society’s partners: Change Canada Consultants Ltd. Our thanks to them: Ian Fawcett (coordinator & photographer), Kathleen Arnason (author and story-teller) and Bill Turner (for helping develop and implement the program). This project was conducted in partnership with the National Trust for Land & Culture (BC), who provided technical assistance and equipment throughout the project. Our thanks also to SPLPS volunteers for helping at the site and with the setup of the program, and to the Society’s members and supporters who provided the financing for the program. Our thanks to the District of Sooke for providing a Community Grant to help finance the program.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 92 Exploring the Lighthouse Raising Funds to Protect the Lighthouse And finally, something a little different... Just like our heritage...don’t discard it, look again! Projects such as the protection and restoration of Sheringham Point Lighthouse depend upon the generosity of people who care about what we are trying to accomplish, and who want to help. Much of the funding for this project so far has been provided by individuals who have stepped forward to make a donation. However, in order to ensure that the Lighthouse can be well cared for in the future, and to enable us to continue providing educational opportunities at the Lighthouse - such as this program - we need to raise additional funds. Can you help? We have set up a fundraising page on the Society’s website to make it easy to donate (all donations over $10.00 will receive a charitable tax receipt). You can find it at: https://sheringhamlighthouse.ca/get-involved-2/make-a-donation/ THANK YOU! Anyone who takes photographs knows that things don’t always turn out as planned. A click at the wrong time, a shake of the camera or a wrong setting can produce something entirely unintended. Often, the results of these situations are simply discarded. But sometimes, with a bit of luck, and with a willingness to look again with a fresh eye and an open mind, the results can be startling. We’ve collected a number of the images created by the children during their visit to the lighthouse that didn’t quite turn out as intended, but that struck us as beautiful abstract images nontheless. We’ve called this collection “UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES”, and we hope they will inspire you to look again at our heritage treasures like Sheringham Point Lighthouse, and make a donation to help us ensure its conservation. Take a look at these few samples on the next page, we think you’ll be amazed!
