The Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society

In 2003, the Government of Canada declared that Sheringham Point Lighthouse was no longer needed to ensure maritime safety. Advances
in technolgoy meant that the Lighthouse was to be discarded – torn down, sold off for other uses or, simply, left to rot and, eventually to fall
apart.

In response, a small group of neighbours gathered to form the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. They were determined
that the Lighthouse, which had stood for 100 years as a symbol of their community, would not be lost. For the next twelve years, the So-
ciety’s volunteers worked extremely hard to fight for the lighthouse’s protection, doing everything they could to raise awareness about the
threat to the Lighthouse. They rallied their community, local businesses and other groups, lobbied and strategized with all levels of govern-
ment, raised funds and, eventually, put forward a plan to take on the responsibility to care for the Lighthouse themselves.

In 2015, the Society’s efforts were successful. The government agreed to transfer the property to the Society, and also at the same time they
officially designated Sheringham Point Lighthouse as a “Canadian Heritage Lighthouse”. As the new owners and stewards the Society is now
working to restore the Lighthouse to its former glory, and to make sure it will always be accessible for the public to enjoy and appreciate.

to appreciate its significance and understand why it is being conserved. It
was also our hope to inspire them – and, through them, their families and

We developed a short program, called “Exploring the Lighthouse”. This has
several parts:

that could be seen up to 25 km away. The lens rotated through a clock-
work mechanism of pulleys and weights – each about 180 kg – that had to
be re-wound every three hours. Because of the size and weight of the lens,
it was seated in a bed of liquid mercury, to allow it to turn without much
friction.

In 1925, a fog-alarm building was added to the site, and a new “diaphone”
(two-tone) fog-horn was installed. Originally a wooden, peaked-roof
building, constructed in front of the tower, this building was replaced in
1976 with the concrete block building that is still on site. The diesel en-
gines that provided power for the site were also located in this building.

A number of other structures were added to the site over the years, includ- Following construction of the boat house - 1912
ing radio towers and sheds, a fallout shelter (that was actually never used
as such, but was used to grow mushrooms), other utility buildings and, in
1964, a new, more modern house for the Lightkeeper.

During the 1980s, the Lighthouse was automated and it was finally de-
staffed in 1989 when the last lightkeeper left. Except for the tower and
the engine room (fog-alarm building), all the other structures on site were
taken down, or deliberately burned, to avoid vandalism.

Left largely unattended for the next thirty years, the Lighthouse began
to deteriorate and was in danger of being lost forever. Then, after many
years of lobbying by the local community, in 2015, it was transferred to the
Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society, and it is now being
restored to its original glory.

While it’s a very personal process, the end result is universal. To appreci-

prerequisite level of education or life experience. Just an ability to see and
to feel, and a willingness to participate.

For this part of the program, we provided each student with a cell phone
camera and some basic instruction in its use, as well a brief overview of
the art of photography. Then we asked them to take photographs while
they were at the lighhouse, focusing on the things that caught their atten-
tion and/or their imagination. When we returned to the school later, each
student chose his or her favourite photo, and explained why they chose it.

There were lots of amazing photographs – creative and insightful! The
following pages showcase their chosen photographs. Enjoy!

Author Kathleen Arnason spoke to the students about the basic elements
of creative writing, focusing on getting the children to explore their own

Each student was asked to write and illustrate a story (factual or fictional)

The Creepy Bus

One day divisions 2 and 3 classes went to Sheringham Lighthouse.
But when I looked out the bus window a chill went down my spine.
I saw a GHOST!!!
When I got off the bus it smelled like seaweed and flowers, but
mostly bacon. But back to the lighthouse. “I don’t feel safe here,” I
said to Blake. He asked “Why?” I told him what happened on the
bus. “WHAT!!!” Blake yelled.

Everyone stared at us. Blake asked me to sit down. It started to get
really windy. I got out of the driving wind. We went to the light-
house. I don’t know if the wind did it, but the glass on the light-
house shattered. Everyone backed up. It was kind of cool to see
that.
After we went to the lighthouse then we went up the stairs. Then
the stairs made a strange sound that went “Eerrrchh!!” I fell and
fell! I landed but I was not hurt. I almost hovered in the air and
then landed. The door slammed shut and it went pitch black.
“Hello?” I said.

Something or somebody said “Hello” back. A shiver went down THE ROCKY SHORE

door lock on its own?!” “Oooo aahhhhh AAAAAhh!” sounded
a strange noise. “What was that?” Alex asked. “I don’t know but
it’s creeping me out!” I answered. “Hello Alex and Blake!” called
a ghostly voice. “Today you are going to pay for making our ships
crash!” “What, we weren’t even there,” said Alex. “You two sunk
our ships!” “What! No!” I yelled. “Yes you did and now you will
pay!” said the ghost. The doors opened, the ghosts were coming in.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!” we both screamed. We ran up the
stairs to the light room. The windows were shattered. Alex spotted
bullets on the floor. We remembered that some people had shot the
lighthouse windows. “The ghosts are coming!” I yelled. “Quick, let’s
jump out the windows and into the water” yelled Alex. “Alright, let’s
go!” I said. We stood on the window sill. “One, two, three…jump!”
I yelled. We landed in the water and then the ghosts fell off the
lighthouse and into the water. Then me and Alex swam to the shore
and then climbed up the cliffs to safety. Then Alex said “Hey Blake,

the stairs and I saw it was the lighthouse light. I knew that, but
something was wrong with it? The light should not be flickering so
I went up some more and I looked at the light. It was still flickering,
and then it stopped. I could not see anything because it is so dark.
Then suddenly a shadow ran behind me! I looked behind me again
but it was not there! Then I remembered that shadows don’t move
on their own!? It had to be a GHOST! What am I going to do? I
will get out of here! What! The door just closed! How? How do I
get out of here!? Oh no! The ghostly shadow is back!!!! What is it
going to do to me!?!? “Aahhhhh!!!” It got me!!!! “Help!” Where
did it go? Then the door opened up. The door! Yay! I ran down
the stairs. Later I looked at the lighthouse and a girl came out. I
looked at her, she had all white eyes…

One day my class and I went on a trip to the Sheringham Light-
house. The weather was nice and it was windy. I smelled smoke
too. People say that the lighthouse is haunted. I got to eat some
crab cooked over a fire. It was good but then I saw smoke and I
heard the ground rumbling! Then a tornado happened! We all ran
towards the lighthouse. There was moss inside the old lighthouse.
It was scary! The tornado broke the lighthouse roof off! The torna-
do scooped my class up and me. We were carried up by the funnel
wind and many of us dropped into the water. My class and I are still
alive! Most of us were knocked out and the owner of the lighthouse
called the firemen and got us out of the water and trees. Later when
I got home from school I told my mom that I had the craziest day.

The end.

Once there was a lighthouse. I went in and it was so scary! I went
up the cold wet squeaky stairs. The door was open! Someone called
“Laylah is that you?” I started getting tears in my eyes. I kept walk-
ing up the stairs as the voice called “Laylah” once again. Then the
wind started blowing harder and harder. I saw a spooky black shad-
ow run across the room. The waves were getting bigger and bigger
in the ocean outside. I got more frightened and I ran down, but the
stairs were breaking. I kept running and running down the stairs.
When I got down the door was locked. Then I was looking out the
window. I saw the shadow of a woman, then someone opened the
door. It was a ghost! She had red spiky hair and a white gown. She
said “My dinner is you!” I was running, and then I woke up. It was
all a dream.

Once I went to the Sheringham Lighthouse in the dark. It was a
cloudy, stormy night. The wind sounded like howling ghosts in the
dark dreary night. I was going for a walk to see why the sounds
were coming from the lighthouse, which was close to my house.
I went in the lighthouse and it was all dark and spooky. Feeling
scared, I slowly climbed up the lighthouse stairs. I was so nervous
that I could feel my ears turning a boiling red. The stairs started to
break beneath my feet! It was a big windy storm. I ran to my house
but I got trapped when the gates closed. I found a giant boat at the
lighthouse. I drove the boat around the gates and then pirates tried
to steal my boat. I got off the boat and I found a submarine and
went under water. The pirates couldn’t get me and I got home safely.

climbed up the ladder!! It smelled like yucky fish; it was rotten! A
gust of wind blew me into the wall!! I dashed up the ladder, but
wait…he wasn’t there!? I felt someone grab my head and it knocked
me out! I woke up in the wait…BOATHOUSE!! It was soggy and
wet outside. It was a lightning storm! I saw the black figure again!
I tried to hit it. My hand went through it! It was a ghost! I tried
to run, but I saw another ghost in front of the door!! I scurried out
the window and ran. They looked at me as I ran! They looked…
sad? Wait, why would they look sad? They got to live by the ocean!
Not many people do or even can. I headed home and went to sleep!
I woke up and I saw them at my window. They whispered in my
head! Then I fell asleep and drifted off to dreams…

When I stepped out of the car I felt shivers go down
my spine. It was a beautiful sight. But even though
the lighthouse was brand new it felt haunted. I
looked at the news bulletin board and immediately I
wanted to go home. Then my best friend Ali called
my name. I told her to look at the bulletin board.
The headlines on the newspaper said “Thousands OUT THERE SOMEWHERE

The Field Trip

It was a normal day. We were going on a field trip in
an airplane but the airplane crashed on a place called
Sheringham Lighthouse. It was cold and gloomy. My
ears turned red and there was a man walking around
dressed in black. I said “Hi!!”, and he said “Hi” in a
deep voice. He asked “Did you bring help?” I said
“No.” We saw a lighthouse. The old man said “It’s the
old Sheringham Lighthouse.” It started to rain and we
went into the lighthouse. We turned on the light, but
the lightkeeper was out. We heard a noise and saw
a picture of one of the old lighthouse keepers James
Bob!! Lightning! Lightning! Thunder! Thunder! We
were all scared. A light started to spin from up stairs
but nothing was there!!!! We lit a fire and saw the old THE MYSTERIOUS LIGHTHOUSE

OVER THE WATER The Great Tornado
“I like the photo because it looks like a painting and I like the thin rock stretching
into the ocean with a tree, and the mountains in the background.”

Hi! I’m seagull. I live on the coast of Vancouver Island.
One night I could see a ferry. It was coming towards the
rocks and then it crashed. It was crazy! But then people
decided to build the Sheringham Lighthouse there because
of the crash. One day, it was hot weather, but there was a
very cold wind coming from the North. Because of that it
made a tornado and the tornado was sucking things up and
then spitting them back out. Then I saw the door of the
lighthouse was open so I went around and started to evac-
uate animals into the lighthouse. I evacuated every animal.
The tornado was almost on top of the lighthouse so I had
to fly as fast as I could. The tornado was right beside the
lighthouse but I just barely made it safely into the building,
and eventually the storm passed. So after that we went back
to our normal lives as animals. Eventually my great grand
seagull found a nice school class of humans coming to visit
the old lighthouse. In the class was a boy named Mitch-
ell and his friends and they were learning about the old
LIGHTHOUSE.

They all said “Yes.” Later we all went to the haunted light-

jackets. Suddenly a window shattered and there was crack-
ling and laughing. Curious, we went inside and went to see
what it was. We saw, standing in front of us, a see-through
shadow! The shadowy man had a beard, he had rusty chains
all around him. He started coming closer, so we started
yelling to stay back, but he would not. He just kept on com-
ing closer and closer. But then something weird happened.
The guy started muttering “The boat.” My heart was racing.
Then he said it again, but louder, he said “THE BOAT!!”

The Lighthouse War!

A long time ago at the lighthouse it was a stormy night! The 5 crew
members at my lighthouse were wet and cold. But then out in the
open water there was a boat! Then we saw one of the five men was a
sniper! The men did not know we were here. With a jump he shot
the old rusted window off the lighthouse! Another scary shot went
sailing near one of my crew members! My hair stood on end and
my stomach started to hurt. I yelled “Duck down!” It took a second
for Rylee to understand then she ducked down just in time too. The
bullet hit the light filled with mercury. It started to hail as if people
were crying. *BOOM*. “Lightning!” cried one of the strangers in
the boat. Lightning struck the boat and it was like Mother Nature
was angry at them. Finally the waves took them away. But then the
crew members and I got sick coughing and ill to our stomachs. It
was a bad night. Suddenly the weather cleared. Flowers grew and
the sun came up and warmed us up. The wind dried us like a blow
dryer. Soon everything was back to normal. The mud turned into
grass, and now every day the sun shines, and the weather is happy. LAND HO!
Soon the lighthouse will be fixed.

The Lighthouse of Hope

On a very wet and windy day four girls named Bre, Anna, Aman-
da and me (Sydney) were out at Sheringham Lighthouse on a field
trip with their class. The weather was sprinkling and the rain felt
like tears on my face. The wind sounded like screaming because
some people had died in shipwrecks by the lighthouse. Me and my
friends talked about an assignment our teacher wanted us to do.
I looked around and no one but me and my friends were there!
Then we realized the class had already left! Me and my friends ran
up the path faster than a cheetah running after its prey. We were
too late! The bus was just leaving after we got through the gate.
“NOOOO!!” we cried louder than a chimpanzee. We slowly walked
down to the lighthouse feeling miserable. When we go back down
to the lighthouse we started a little fire. And we built a shelter for
the night. Later that night it started raining cats and dogs. We ran
for cover because the shelter fell when we were putting out the fire.
We tugged the lighthouse door and it flung open. We dashed inside
and fell asleep. When I woke up I was in my own bed and I won-
dered “Was that for real?” THE LIGHTHOUSE OF HOPE
