Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 4 The Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society In 2003, the Government of Canada declared that the historic Sheringham Point Lighthouse was no longer needed to ensure maritime safety in the Juan de Fuca Strait. Advances in technology meant that the Lighthouse could now be discarded — torn down, sold off for other uses or, simply, left to rot and eventually to fall apart. In response, a small group of neighbours gathered to form the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. They were determined that the Lighthouse, which had stood for almost 100 years as a symbol of their community, would not be lost. For the next twelve years, the Society’s volunteers worked extremely hard to fight for the Lighthouse’s protection, doing everything they could to raise awareness about the threat to their community heritage. They rallied their community, local businesses and other groups, lobbied and strategized with all levels of government, raised funds and, eventually, put forward a plan to take on the responsibility to care for and conserve the Lighthouse themselves. In 2015, the Society’s efforts were successful. The government agreed to transfer the property to the Society and also, at the same time, they officially designated Sheringham Point Lighthouse a “Canadian Heritage Lighthouse”. As the new owners and stewards, the Society worked for the next seven years to restore the Lighthouse to its former glory, and to make sure it will always be accessible for the public to enjoy and appreciate. The Lighthouse is now protected and is open to the public as a community heritage park.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 5 Children today have a greater range of opportunities open to them than at any time in recent history, and greater freedoms than ever before. Thriving in this chaotic environment requires an ability for all children to be able to find a strong foundation from which they can build their lives, achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. For most of us, that foundation starts with the family, and extends outward into the community. Just as a tree needs deep roots to grow tall and strong, so does a child draw nourishment and vitality from his or her own roots, from the comfort of belonging, from having a place to call home. Understanding and, in particular, experiencing their own connections to the people and places around them is invaluable for children in so many ways. Learning about their own and their community’s history provides a base from which they can explore their world and help them answer that most fundamental of questions: “How did this come to be?” Our history is not just an academic pursuit to be left to historians. It’s not just about dates and far-off locations, nor is it just about great battles, world-shaking events, the comings and goings of kings and queens and presidents. It’s also about the lives of the people who lived here before, their struggles and triumphs, their thoughts and ideas that nurtured their families, built their communities and shaped their world. It’s about the stories our grandfathers told us, and those from our neighbours. We all have stories in our lives and they are, in their way, as full of drama and intrigue as any of the great sagas of our history classes. It is our stories that shape us, that make us who we are. Our history – our heritage – is best lived and experienced, understood through the things we can see and touch and feel, and passed on in a way that warms our hearts and feeds our imaginations. It’s why we need to work hard to conserve, appreciate and celebrate our heritage — not just the castles and stately mansions, but the cottages and the old lighthouses as well. Those remnants of our past have stories to tell. “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” ~ Albert Einstein Exploring the Lighthouse Saseenos Elementary Division 9

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 6 ...The Program To help children in the local area strengthen their connections to their own community, we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to visit Sheringham Point Lighthouse, to learn about its history and operations, to appreciate its significance and understand why it is being conserved. It was also our hope to inspire them – and, through them, their families and friends – to take a personal interest in further exploring their community and helping to protect and celebrate their heritage and the future of the Lighthouse. We developed this short program, called “Exploring the Lighthouse”. This program has several parts: 1. History and Operations – we provide a short presentation outlining the history of the Lighthouse, and also talk about how lighthouses work and their role in maritime safety and community development. 2. Visit to the Lighthouse – the students visit the Lighthouse to see firsthand what it’s all about, and to experience its remarkable character and ambience. 3. Reflections – we ask the students to creatively express their impressions of the Lighthouse site by: • Taking photographs while they are at the site, focusing on the features that capture their attention/imagination. • Writing a story (either fictional or non-fiction) about a Lighthouse. 4. Commemorative Book - we compile the students’ photographs and stories into this commemorative book, which is being provided online to all the children, their families and the whole community. Exploring the Lighthouse It is the Society’s hope that we will be able to find the ongoing resources to make this project an annual event, and to make it available to all the elementary schools in the local area, with the result being that all children growing up in this part of the world will have the opportunity – through their visit to the lighthouse – to better understand and appreciate the community they call home. Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 7 A Brief History of the Lighthouse... Sheringham Point Lighthouse was built in 1912, and illuminated for the first time on September 30 of that year. The Lighthouse was built in response to the tragic wreck of the steamship SS Valencia, on January 22, 1906. En route from San Francisco to Victoria and Seattle, late at night and in rough weather, the Valencia missed the turn into the Strait of Juan de Fuca and steamed directly on to the rocks near Pachena Point. Of the 173 people aboard, 136 were lost. Creation of the Lighthouse began in 1911, with the purchase of 4 acres of land from Shirley resident Edwin Clark. The following year, the lighthouse tower was built, along with a small boathouse and a house for the lighkeeper and his family. The first lightkeeper, Eustace Arden, arrived in September 1912, and continued at the site until 1946. The light itself was a 3rd Order Fresnel Lens. Originally lit by oil lamps (and later by electric lamps), it was made up of many prisms which focused the light into a powerful beam that could be seen up to 25 km away. The lens Exploring the Lighthouse Under construction - 1912 Newly completed - ca 1912

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 8 rotated through a clockwork mechanism of pulleys and weights – each about180 kg – that had to be re-wound every three hours. Because of the size and weight of the lens, it was seated in a bed of liquid mercury, to allow it to turn without much friction. In 1925, a fog-alarm building was added to the site, and a new “diaphone” (two-tone) fog-horn was installed. Originally a wooden, peaked-roof building, constructed in front of the tower, this building was replaced in 1976 with the concrete block building that is still on site. The diesel engines that provided power for the site were also located in this building. A number of other structures were added to the site over the years, including radio towers and sheds, a fallout shelter (that was actually never used as such, but came to be used to grow mushrooms instead), other utility buildings and, in 1964, a new, more modern house for the Lightkeeper. During the 1980s, the Lighthouse was automated and it was finally destaffed in 1989 when the last lightkeeper left. Except for the tower and the engine room (fog-alarm building), all the other structures on site were taken down, or deliberately burned, to avoid vandalism. Left largely unattended for the next thirty years, the Lighthouse began to deteriorate and was in danger of being lost forever. Then, after many years of lobbying by the local community, in 2015, it was transferred to the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. It has now been restored to its former glory, and is open to the public as a community heritage park. ...A Brief History of the Lighthouse Exploring the Lighthouse Following construction of the fog alarm building - ca 1926 Following construction of the boat house - 1912

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 9 Exploring the Lighthouse “The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” ~ Dorothea Lange, Photographer Reflecting what you see... Photography is a powerful tool for exploring the world around us. It causes us to focus more intently on what we are looking at, to look more closely, pay attention to the details, and take nothing for granted. It creates an intimate connection with the subject and with the environment that surrounds it. While it’s a very personal process, the end result is universal. To appreciate a photograph requires no ability to read, no language in common, no prerequisite level of education or life experience. Just an ability to see and to feel, and a willingness to participate. For this part of the program, we provided each student with a cell phone camera and some basic instruction in its use, as well as a brief overview of the art of photography. Then we asked them to take photographs while they were at the lighthouse, focusing on the things that caught their attention and/or their imagination. When we returned to the school later, each student chose his or her favourite photo, and explained why they chose it. There were lots of amazing photographs – creative and insightful! The following pages showcase their chosen photographs. Enjoy! “Photography represents the world we know, and suggests a world beyond what we can see. Creativity is the gap between perception and knowledge.” ~ Emmet Gowin, Photographer

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 10 Exploring the Lighthouse “Tell me the facts and I’ll learn. Tell me the truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” ~ An old First Nations proverb “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” ~ Rudyard Kipling, Author Telling your stories... Story-telling has always formed the underlying basis of human communication. Our stories are the ways that we connect ourselves to one another and to our communities. They help define who we are and where come from. Children naturally understand the power of story-telling, and we wanted to provide them with tools and strategies to explore and expand their own story-telling abilities, to share their own stories and to learn from others. Author Kathleen Arnason spoke to the students about the basic elements of creative writing, focusing on getting the children to explore their own feelings and values and to think about what is important and has meaning for them. Each student was asked to write a story (factual or fictional) about a lighthouse, incorporating what they had learned and what they had seen throughout the day. The following pages contain the results of that work, and they speak for themselves. Kathleen talks about the importance of storytelling and creativity. Ian tells the story about how the Lighthouse was built.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 13 Addison’s Pages (continued) UNDER THE OCEAN by Addison Welcome to the ocean where the fish play all day and where we play in the sun. Today we’re learning about what lives in the ocean at Sheringham Lighthouse. Let’s look at some fish. Look at the yellow fish, so pretty. Look at the red green blue orange purple and pink fish. Let’s look at some seals, they’re so cute. Enough about the ocean, let’s look at the lighthouse. Look at the lighthouse so tall. Now let’s look down at the view, soooo pretty, and pretty cool huh? Now I’m gonna tell you a tale of a whale, a lighthouse and three friends who risk their lives for the lighthouse. Do you want me to tell you? Okay, it started when their class, Div 9, were going on a field trip, when “boom” the school bus flipped over. One person died, but I’m not getting in to that. Anyway, half the class was bleeding, the other half was crying, but one thing’s for sure, everyone was scared. From then, they had to walk on foot cause the bus driver broke his arm, plus we got kicked out. Sadly, we are 50 min away so we had to walk and walk and walk, til we finally got there. We all ran to the place and we begged for food and water. We all looked at the lighthouse and decided to leave. But some of the class wanted to stay, so we decided to stay. Me, Layla and Oakley went in the lighthouse and climbed the stairs, and then someone closed the door. The three girls were scared, but they continued to climb till they reached a light. The light was purple and magnetic and it was poling. The girls toured it then “boom” , someone shot the door open and the light was gone and the girls had to run. They went back with the class and went back to school, and kept on thinking about the strange light THE END.

The first thing that he had to do when we arrived was follow the adult down the path. When we were at the bottom, we had to sit on the ground and listen to the adult. The adult was talking about making a story that had a lighthouse in the story. We had to make a story that had the lighthouse. After all the talking another adult gave the whole class a google phone (I think it was a google phone). We had to take pictures at the lighthouse place and make that picture into the story logo. Some of us went to the lighthouse to take pictures and went to a cliff to take pictures. After that, we had to go up the trail. It was hard but I made it up. We waited for the bus to come, but we had to go to another trail and we were all tired (I think). When we were at our location, we waited for the bus to come. When the bus finally arrived, we went in the bus and finally were back at the school.

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 17 Ava’s Pages (continued) THE CRYSTAL by Ava One day there were three dragons: Blaze, Cactus and Stingray. They saw a Lighthouse on their way through the forest. It was a very nice lighthouse. There were tons of fresh berries, mangoes, strawberries, blueberries, dragon fruits, you name it. With a grassy field and water to cool off in, from the hot day. It was a perfect place to be! They stayed there day after day. But one day Cactus saw something weird, something suspicious. She saw three dragons that looked like guards, in a far distance, just watching. Cactus thought “Should I tell the others? No, I shouldn’t, maybe they’re just watching something!” She went off and looked for some berries. Stingray and Blaze walked up to the water, and Blaze saw something. It was a blue/white shiny thingy. “What is that?” Blaze said. Stingray is a sea wing so she used her vision to look at it. She picks it up and says “It looks like some type of crystal.” “Oooh!” Blaze says, as her eyes widen. Blaze looks at the crystal and remembers something from her dream she had the night before. “Hmm, it looks so familiar.” Blaze goes for a walk to get berries, but still is confused about why it looks so familiar. “Eh, whatever!” she says as she grabs some berries. It was night and Cactus came back with some sticks and stones to make a fire. Stingray grabbed some berries to roast on the fire. Soon it became dark and they all went to sleep. BLAZE’S DREAM CHAPTER 2 IN BLAZE’S DREAM: Blaze was walking to the ocean since it was a hot day. Then she saw something. It was the crystal. She went and picked it up, and thought “Isn’t this the crystal I found earlier?” She flew up to a tree to sit, and looked at the crystal. “Hmm, this is weird.” She went to throw it, but then heard a BANG! It was the guards that she saw earlier. And a lot of dragons flew down. Blaze hid in the leaves of the tree. There was a big dragon. She looked mean. She said “Guards , I know someone’s here. I can smell cont...

Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society Page 18 Ava’s Pages (continued) it.” Blaze tried to be quiet. Blaze lost balance and almost fell out of the tree. Which caused a lot of noise. The dragon heard Blaze. “I hear somebody. If no one is going to look for this dragon then I will,” she said angrily. Blaze woke up. Blaze thought “that was a weird dream and it had the crystal in it!” Blaze got up and walked around for berries, Cactus and Stingray . “Hey Blaze,” Stingray said, “I’m going to get some berries, want to come?” “Sure,” they said, and they walked over to get some berries. A while has passed. Blaze went to walk to the ocean. It was a really hot day. She walked up to the water and saw a crystal. “This happened in my dream,” she said. She picked it up and flew into a tree. She looked at the crystal and heard a BANG! “This also happened in my dream. That only means….there’s dragons coming!” She yelled and warned Cactus and Stingray. “What are you talking about?” “You’re about to find out.” The guards came and the big red dragon with bright red eyes came. “Well, well, well,” the dragon said. “Who are you?” Cactus said. “I’m Queen Scarlett, and I’m afraid you’re going to have to leave.” “No, we don’t want to leave this place. It is amazing.” Scarlett’s eyes widened as she started to look mad. “Guards,” Scarlett said, “ATTACK!” The guards walked up with their weapons and started to attack. Stingray used her freezing powers as much as she could, but she couldn’t do it for long. The guards got out of the cold and started chasing. Blaze yelled “Cactus you’re good at distracting, can you buy me some time?” Cactus yelled “I’ll try!” Blaze flew to find the crystal. She found it and picked it up. She thought in her head “this crystal is here for something, it must be able to do something.” She flew down to the ground and yelled “HEY! Come get me!” The guards looked at each other and nodded as they started walking up to Blaze. “Please work, please do something.” Nothing happened, and she lost hope. Then the crystal rose into the air and took Queen Scarlett and the Guards, and they were gone. They lived happily ever after. The end. THE CRYSTAL (cont.)

Ben D. wanted to go on a boat owned by a company called Finkelbergs Boating Company. Ben X. wanted to go on a boat owned by Brettanas Boats. They finally decided to use a boat from Finkelbergs Boating Company. Before they left, the sailor told them to be careful not to fall overboard. They said that they wouldn’t, but he still warned them to be careful. Shortly after they left, it started to get windy, but the Bens didn’t take it as anything. As soon as they couldn’t see the island anymore, a storm started to form, getting windier and rainier, until they couldn’t see ahead of them clearly. The captain of the boat said that they should turn back, but they didn’t want to. Eventually both Ben X. and Ben S. wanted to turn back but Ben D. didn’t want to, so they started fighting. But it was a small boat and Ben D. was much stronger than the other Bens. He started pushing the other Bens backward until they both fell off the boat. Ben D. tried to save them, but he wasn’t fast enough and they fell off the boat. None of the Bens knew how to swim, so nobody could save them. When they got back to the island, Ben D. told the other Bens’ parents what had happened. They were all very sad and Ben D. didn’t stop apologizing to the other Bens’ parents for weeks. They always told him that it wasn’t his fault, but he still felt that it was. So he decided to surprise them by getting them a new car. The End

They made islands as soon as they hit the water. Ben B got an idea and he thought he should be the king of both islands. He wanted more though. He wanted to live in a lighthouse. The thing is, he didn’t want to build it. Thankfully for him, he knew science and he knew how to make things come alive. He built an army of sand people to build his lighthouse for him. They started building and, before long, they were done. He wanted more though, and he told them to build more and more. They kept building until he was happy. He climbed the tallest lighthouse and got to the moon. This was very exciting for him, he always wanted to eat moon cheese. He sat down in a crater and started eating. That is how he stayed for millions of years. Nowadays, if you see something on the moon it is probably Ben B eating some cheese. The end

They all gazed up at the lighthouse. “Wow, it looks so beautiful and cool” said Brooke. “What is that sound?” said Emily.” “What sound? I think you’re going crazy,” said Brooke. “Let’s go up and check it out,” said Phoenix. “OK,” said Brooke. “I don’t wanna go up,” said Emily. “Why, are you scared?” said Phoenix mockingly. “Oh my god shut up,” said Emily.” “Let’s go up now!” said Brooke. “Guys…I wanna go back down,” said Emily. “NO!” said Phoenix. “OMG I HATE YOU!” said Emily. *pushes Phoenix off the lighthouse* “AHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….. !” “NOOOO, YOU KILLED HER!!!!!” said Brooke. “I-I’m sorry,” said Emily. “WHATEVER, DON’T TALK TO ME EVER AGAIN!!” To Be Continued…….

One day there was a problem…Erika’s hair was too messy and it was all tangled. So they decided to try to brush her hair. That ended badly. The brush got stuck in her hair. Then they tried wetting it, but the shower head got stuck in her hair. So they tried cutting her hair and, once again, the scissors got stuck in her hair. So after all those tries, they sat down and relaxed. “Oh what are we going to do?” said Lucy. “I don’t know,” said Ava, “could always shave her head.” So they got to it. They shaved Erika’s head. After that, Erika was bald. But she was okay…she liked it. So that was the story of Hair Lighthouse. The End.

Cinder looked at the Skywing dragonet and said “This is what a queen looks like.” They decided to call the dragonet Jewel. They raised Jewel till she was ready to become Queen of the Skywings. They all bowed to their queen and had a happy life. Till one night…they heard a big crash down in the dungeons. Queen Jewel said to her guard to go see what that big crash was. When the guard went down to the dungeons, he had a shock on his face. The bars of one of the cells had been smashed open. He hurried back up to queen jewel to tell her what happened. “WHAT” she said. ”WHO WAS IN THAT CELL?” “It was a Nightwing, your majesty,” the guard whispered. “THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!” Queen Jewel shouted. “I want all my guards to find that Nightwing,” she said with anger in her voice. “I don’t want that Nightwing stealing my treasure again,” said Queen Jewel. “Yes your majesty,” said the guard. “I want you to ask the other prisoners what they saw,” said Queen Jewel, with smoke coming out of her nose. The guard got all the other guards together for a meeting. The commander guard (which is the guard Queen Jewel talks to) went down to the dungeons to question the other prisoners. He reported back to Queen Jewel. “Your majesty,” he said, bowing. “What?” she said with a tone still in her voice. “I have questioned the prisoners and they said that they saw a black ball of smoke and then it vanished,” the guard said. “Very well then, bring me the prisoners…all of them.” The guard went back down to the dungeons and dragged up many other dragons that weren’t just Skywings…there were Rainwings and Icewings and Sandwings and Mudwings…but no Nightwings. As the Queen also questioned the prisoners for herself…little did they know a Skywing named Garnet was tracking down the Nightwing. Garnet was on the same track as the Nightwing, and then saw something black with white spots in the distance…IT WAS THE NIGHTWING. Garnet flew up into the sky and did a surprise attack on the Nightwing. Garnet pinned him to the ground and took the treasure out of his talons. Garnet dragged the Nightwing all the way back to the castle, clutching the treasure in his talons. When Garnet finally got to the castle, he dragged the Nightwing up the stairs to the throne room, still clutching the treasure in his talons. Queen Jewel had a big shock on her face and clapped her talons excitedly. “GARNET HAS DONE IT!” she said with pride. The treasure was returned to the Queen and the Nightwing was thrown into the Nightwing Volcano. THE END THE SKYWING TREASURE (cont.)

All of a sudden, a lighthouse appeared out of nowhere. It just sat there for a couple of days. Meanwhile, under the sea there was a tiny starfish, a fish and a big fat blob. They all lived on a coral reef together. One day they all decided to go on an adventure. They found this weird mysterious big portal. They decided to go in it and then, all of a sudden, they ended up in the lighthouse. They got freaked out and they tried to find a way to seek help in the middle of the desert. Then they started to try to find materials to build a big army structure around the lighthouse just in case anything tried to come in. And then, the other side of the day saw this big wave from miles and miles away. So they did some research and the big wave is going to be hitting in 3 weeks. So they started gathering all the stuff that they could find all around the lighthouse. They built a big barrier, and they planted grass and put a little hole through the barrier so they can grow a big huge garden. And then, all of a sudden, it was one day away. They started preparing for all the resources they could find and then when they finally finished they only had one hour left. It was coming closer, minute by minute, and then all of a sudden it hit. And there was a big “whoosh.” Only a little bit spilled over, but the rest was okay and they had running water resources. But the weird thing is that it wasn’t saltwater, it was regular water… They built this mother big space, that had a big water park and there was salt shakers, water slides and all this cool stuff and they lived happily ever after. The end

THE HAIR LIGHTHOUSE by Erika and Lucy Once upon a time, there lived Ava, Lucy and Erika. They lived in the Hair Lighthouse. The End.

We live in a hole in the ground. Bob, Bill, and Bobby go looking for food. Apparently, they see a lighthouse in the distance. They know there’s people at lighthouses so there would be food! They crawl over to the lighthouse and go inside. The door closes! They climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse. The lighthouse keeper chases them around with a broom. The roaches climb the stairs and jump off the top of the roof! They land on the soft moss below. They find ants and decide to eat them instead! Suddenly the lighthouse keeper comes and smacked them dead! The End.

She was 34 minutes into her 1 hour long run, when she noticed the door to the lighthouse was open. She was curious and went in. As soon as her two feet were in, the door SLAMMED shut, and the lights turned off. It was pitch black. She was only 24, and she was so scared. It’s been 5 minutes and she’s still trying to get out. Then she hears a horn, almost like a ship horn when they’re about to crash. Leslie finds herself in the middle of the ocean. The lighthouse was detached from the ground. The waves were so strong she couldn’t do anything except for cry, so she did, for hours and hours. She heard a helicopter and broke the window. She waved her hands as high as she could. A wave came and knocked her over. The lighthouse flooded as she took her last breath. The same helicopter let down a line. She grabbed it and got pulled up to the helicopter. She was fine…a little out of breath, but fine.
