5. Pulverize: to demolish or crush completely
Example: It’s weird being alone with a teacher, especially Mrs.
Dodds. Something about the way she looked at the frieze, as if she
wanted to pulverize it.

6. Shriveled: Wrinkled or withered often from age
Example: She was a shriveled hag with bat wings and claws and a
mouth full of yellow fangs, and she was about to slice me to ribbons

7. Contaminate: to make harmful or unusable
Example: My lunch must have been contaminated with magic
mushrooms or something

8. Squall: sudden violent gusts of wind, often with precipitation
Example: One of the current events we studied in social studies
class was the unusual number of small planes that had gone down

The Lightning Thief Vocabulary: Chapters 5-8

1. Gingerly: With extreme care or delicacy
Example: “He took the empty glass from me gingerly, as if it were
dynamite, and set it back on the table.

2. Pseudonym: a fictitious name used when a person preforms a
particular social role
Example: I’m afraid that was a pseudonym. You may call me
Chiron.

3. Metaphysical: Relating to things that are thought to exist but can’t
be seen.
Example: God – capital G, God. That’s a different matter
altogether. We shan’t deal with the metaphysical.

4. Endeavor: an attempt to achieve a goal; to try hard at something
Example: Ah, gods, plural, as in, great beings that control the forces
of nature and human endeavors: the immortal god of Olympus.
That’s a smaller matter.

5. Convergence: The occurrence of two or more things coming
together.
Example: Well now, there’s Mount Olympus in Greece. And there’s
the home of the gods, the convergence point of their powers,
which did indeed used to be on Mount Olympus.

6. Obliterate: To do away with completely, without leaving a trace
Example: The gods are part of it. You might even say they are the
source of it, or at least, they are tied so tightly to it that they
couldn’t possibly fade, not unless al of Western civilization were
obliterated.

7. Mausoleum: A large burial chamber, usually above ground
Example: The pair of cabins at the head of the field, numbers one
and two, looked like his-and-hers mausoleums, big white marble
boxes with heavy columns in front

8. Emphasis: special importance or significance
Example: Out of all the cabins, eleven looked the most like a
regular old summer camp cabin, with emphasis on the old.

9. Saunter: To walk leisurely with no apparent aim
Example: The big girl from the ugly red cabin was sauntering toward
us.

10.Gawk: to look with amazement; look stupidly
Example: Outside, Clarisse and her friends were sprawled in the
mud, and a bunch of other campers had gathered around to
gawk.

11.Consist: to be composed of
Example: …and the climbing wall, which actually just consisted of
two facing walls that shook violently, dropped boulders, sprayed
lava, and clashed together if you didn’t get to the top fast enough.

12.Carnage: the savage killing of many people
