17 APOTHECARY MEETS PERFUME ART VISIT OUR STORE NEXT TO THE HOTEL ENTRANCE A restoration at the heart of the KMSKA At the end of September 2023, the KMSKA launched a special project. The restoration of ‘Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints’ by Rubens. An altarpiece measuring no less than 6 metres high and almost 4.5 metres wide. Due to its gigantic size, the restoration of the masterpiece necessarily has to take place in the museum room. The KMSKA made a virtue out of necessity and created a special setting for it: Studio Rubens. For two years, you can watch the conservators at work live in the Rubens Room, the heart of the museum. After Antwerp University thoroughly scanned the canvas with an XRF scanner and a first careful cleaning of the surface, © Fille Roelants a new phase in the restoration started in January: removing the varnish. Six conservators will be spending several months working with solvents and cotton swabs. A very meticulous work. A special restoration phase in which surprising details are already emerging. Follow Studio Rubens closely via the website www.kmska.be/nl/evenement/ studio-rubens, or visit the KMSKA and see the conservators at work. News
Botanic magazine Each of our pralines equals 12 grams of culinary excellence BR A ND -NEW NEUH AUS CEO ISA BEL BA ERT SPEA KS A BOU T CR EAT I V IT Y, EXPANSION AND COMING HOME
19 In November 2023, Isabel Baert assumed the position of CEO at the leading Belgian chocolate company. Having served as the commercial director for several years, she brings a well-defined vision for the future direction of Neuhaus. Delighted to share her strategies with Botanic Sanctuary magazine, Isabel elaborates on her plans for advancing the esteemed chocolate brand. How were your initial months as CEO of Neuhaus? They were intense, but I am very happy with my new role in the company. Time has flown by. I started during the end-ofyear period, the busiest months of the year, so I had to jump and swim right away. Despite the initial challenges and busyness, I find that this new role energizes me. Each morning, I wake up eager to dive into the day’s tasks. The prospect of international expansion adds to this drive. My aim is to propel Neuhaus beyond Belgium’s borders in the years to come. You have a background in both business and fashion management, having worked in the past at Hugo Boss and the group around lingerie brands Marie Jo and Prima Donna, among others. Do you find that same mix of creativity and management at Neuhaus? Especially in my previous position as Commercial Director at Neuhaus, creativity was very important. We always say: each of our pralines is 12 grams of culinary excellence. We explore the harmonious blends of flavors, observing what resonates in the market. Our focus extends beyond mere chocolate sales; we market concepts. Innovation is at the Isabel Baert CEO Neuhaus NEUHAUS is de epitome of refined indulgence in the finest Belgian chocolate. This praline brand invites you on a voyage through elegant flavours and delightful textures, culminating in a harmonious burst of taste sensations. Text: Dorien Ooms core of our approach, constantly seeking to introduce new ideas. Moreover, we are dedicated to enhancing our packaging, striving for sustainability to enrich the unboxing experience. How do you harness that creativity in your current job as CEO? In my current job, I have to distance myself more from the creative processes and entrust those to the teams. But that doesn’t mean I don’t deal with certain issues creatively. For example, how can we best accommodate the work of a sick colleague with the people available? Personally, I always look for creative solutions for different situations. When I feel we are stuck I can say ‘why don’t we try this’. By thinking out-of-the-box, you free yourself from ‘constraints’ and arrive at an innovative solution. How do you refuel your creativity with a busy, international job and a large family? Remaining open-minded, I believe, is key. My curiosity about the world propels me to devour numerous articles and stay updated on trends, not only in gastronomy but across various industries. I’m constantly observing developments, colours, and emerging patterns. This broad perspective enables us to identify trends that we can integrate into Neuhaus. As CEO, do you have a clear path for the future of Neuhaus in mind? The vision for Neuhaus is crystal clear to me: we aim to share the pinnacle of Belgian chocolate excellence with the world. This statement encapsulates our core values. → Back then, in the bustling Brussels of 1857, Neuhaus’ very first boutique opened, in the beautiful Galerie de la Reine. It was not a praline shop then, but a pharmacy where medicines were carefully covered with a fine layer of chocolate. The ethos of care and customer-centricity remains deeply embedded in the Neuhaus brand experience to this day. In 1912, the grandson of pharmacist Jean Neuhaus introduced a delectable filling, replacing the medicinal content. This is how the very first Belgian praline was born in the family’s workshops. Meanwhile, Neuhaus chocolates are loved and enjoyed around the world, as each one is made under the watchful eye of the Maîtres Chocolatiers in Vlezenbeek, Belgium.
Botanic magazine Our pursuit of excellence requires constant innovation and exploration of new ingredients. Our priority is to continuously elevate our quality standards before expanding our reach. Maintaining our Belgian identity, with our headquarters in Vlezenbeek, is paramount. Chocolate remains our essence and focal point. We aim to leverage this strength and distinctiveness as we gradually expand our global footprint, one step at a time, keeping our mission in mind. How big is the world of Neuhaus today? Belgium continues to be our primary market. In Europe, we operate our own stores in Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. Moreover, we place significant emphasis on airports across Europe, Asia, and the US. Because of our landmarks there, our brand becomes widespread. Notably, we boast multiple stores in New York. The association of Belgian chocolate with quality holds particular significance for us, especially in Anglo-Saxon markets. Furthermore, we strive to ensure that each of our stores, regardless of location, offers a distinctive and memorable experience. One of the things you want to do is further develop Neuhaus as a premium brand. What are the plans there? Step by step, customer by customer, city by city. We don’t think in terms of: ‘we are going to conquer the German market’. No, we want to grow from our strengths and our ecosystem. That’s why we think city by city. From there, we can build an ecosystem in the region by displaying our products in our own shops and those of independent operators. We also want to boost Neuhaus online. Neuhaus is a brand with a strong and recognisable identity. What values do you associate with Neuhaus? Neuhaus stands for caring, innovation and excellence. Caring (The gift of caring) for the end consumer is very central to all our endeavours. We frequently invite our customers to collect gifts from our boutiques, offering them an early opportunity to get the first taste of our novelties, while we gather valuable feedback. As pioneers in praline creation, it’s imperative that we excel in our core strengths: innovation and continuous invention. This commitment is essential for maintaining our standard of excellence and our relentless pursuit of improvement. Neuhaus organised the launch event of their 2023 Easter collection here, featuring the Botanicals Limited Edition by Gert De Mangeleer
21 What kind of experience do you aim to provide customers as they enter any of the 90 Neuhaus boutiques? Most importantly, they should feel welcome. We tell our shop staff to welcome someone into the shop just like they would at home: give them a warm welcome. In addition, people should feel compelled to taste everything. Knowledgeable staff is therefore essential. We give them the tools to give our customers a unique boutique experience, where you feel good and welcome. You have travelled and worked abroad a lot in your life. How important is it for you to have a familiar place somewhere? Honestly? It’s incredibly important. When I have a positive experience, I’m inclined to return to the same hotel. I prefer sticking with what’s familiar rather than experimenting with different options each time. It imbues every visit with a sense of familiarity, almost like returning home. I feel comfortable, welcomed, and at ease, allowing me to go about my business peacefully. Have you stayed at Botanic Sanctuary yourself? Absolutely, I’ve visited numerous times, both for work and personal reasons. I truly believe it’s an incredible experience. Stepping into this establishment in a bustling city like Antwerp instantly brings a sense of tranquillity. I attribute it to the blend of materials, colours, and fragrances they employ, creating an atmosphere conducive to relaxation. Naturally, the location and architecture play a role, as well as the opportunity to indulge in delightful culinary experiences. Neuhaus is a partner of Botanic Sanctuary. What does the cooperation look like at the moment? It actually started very small with gifts for the hotel’s VIP guests. Subsequently, we began exploring ways to expand our efforts. This led to the installation of the showcase in the entrance hall. And after that we found each other again for specific events, such as Easter. We brought chocolate statues. This was followed by Easter brunch at Botanic Sanctuary with an easter egg hunt in the garden, with Neuhaus chocolate. On the other hand, we organised the launch event of our 2023 Easter collection here, featuring the Botanicals Limited Edition by Gert De Mangeleer (chef of Hertog Jan, on the Botanic Sanctuary site, ed.). In addition, we were introduced to the hotel’s turn-down service. This gradually brought us closer together, organically, step by step. Why is it such a strong partnership? It works very well indeed, and if you think about it, both partners go to great lengths for customer experience. For both Botanic Sanctuary and Neuhaus, providing customers with a premium and exceptional experience, including in terms of gastronomic excellence, is their top priority. And at the same time, we show the world the best Belgium has to offer. I hope we can grow even closer together in the future. Finally, Isabel, do you personally enjoy having some chocolate? Absolutely, I can enjoy it immensely. At the headquarters in Vlezenbeek, during an initiation meeting of new creations, we regularly sample all kinds of things. But I like it best just after lunch. That’s when I take one praline, and when I enjoy it the most. • www.neuhauschocolates.com
Botanic magazine For more than five centuries, ANTWERP has been the largest and most reliable diamond centre in the world. Antwerp controls as much as four-fifths of the rough market and half of the cut diamond market and has no less than four exchanges, of which the ANTWERP DIAMOND BOURSE is the largest. Text: Ingrid Dircken A beautiful place
23 Trust and respect The Antwerp Diamond Bourse is so much more than a place where diamonds are traded. It is the place to network with leading diamond dealers, brokers and jewellers. The place is built on trust, friendship and respect. Whatever the nationality or origin of its members. That’s why David Gotlib is rightfully proud to be president of this special place. “What the world doesn’t seem to achieve, appears to be no problem at the Antwerp Diamond Bourse: dealing with people of a different nationality, origin or religion with the utmost respect. The Bourse members have no less than 180 different nationalities, and they can all sit around the table together in harmony. That aspect alone makes the Antwerp Diamond Bourse a very special place. The Bourse was established in 1904 aimed at conducting business in a safer and somewhat more structured environment. Before then, diamonds were simply traded on the streets or at café Petit Duc in the Pelikaanstraat. The Antwerp Diamond Bourse is not the only diamond exchange in Antwerp, but it is the largest one. The fact that a city has several diamond exchanges is quite exceptional and once again confirms that Antwerp has been the centre of the diamond trade for more than 500 years.” Why Antwerp? “Due to its central and extremely convenient location, Antwerp has always been a place of unlimited opportunities. At the end of the 15th century, the city became the centre of the diamond trade. Until then, Bruges had been the hub of the industry because, at that time the rough diamonds that were imported to our regions came from India via Venice to Bruges. After Vasco da Gama discovered the direct overseas connection to India in 1498, Indian diamonds were brought directly to Antwerp from the 16th century onwards. From the very beginning, the diamond trade has mainly been in the hands of Jewish traders and there is a logical explanation for this: these precious stones are very valuable but take up little space. That makes the diamond trade a mobile business. Something that was – sadly - of great importance at the time; any day, action could be taken against the Jewish population. Not only the favourable geographical location but also the very well-organised import and export activities made Antwerp the diamond centre. To help regulate the inflow and outflow of diamonds to and from Antwerp, the Belgian government created the Diamond Office customs office in the Antwerp diamond district in 1945. This aimed to make the diamond trade as smooth → © Ilan Tache
Botanic magazine as possible with as little interference and red tape as possible. And of course, the four diamond exchanges also play a big role.” Safety first “The main task of the board of directors of the Antwerp Diamond Bourse is to promote and protect the interests of its members. And even though the fair is built on trust, strict security rules apply and not anyone can just join. Access to the exchange can only be gained upon approval of your membership. To become a member, strict rules and procedures apply. First, existing members have to put you forward as a candidate. After all, being a member of a diamond exchange is a privilege and proof of responsibility and knowledge. And each member is committed to upholding the traditions and principles of mutual trust, respect and friendship among stock exchange members worldwide. Upon entering the building, everyone is subjected to identity and security checks. The building is also strictly monitored 24/7 and the necessary measures have been taken inside the building too.” From mine to finger “Today, almost every diamond in the world passes through Antwerp, 86% of all rough diamonds and 50% of all polished diamonds worldwide travel through Antwerp. That’s a whole lot of diamonds. Yet only a very small number of these end up in jewellery design studios in Antwerp. And that is too bad because there is certainly no lack of talent in our city. It’s my aspiration to see the Antwerp diamond industry transition further from a B2B model to a B2C market. This shift would create increased opportunities for young jewellery designers and transform Antwerp from merely a waypoint in a diamond’s journey to its ultimate destination.” • The Antwerp Diamond Bourse is so much more than a place where diamonds are traded: it's built on trust, friendship and respect. © Ilan Tache

27 Antwerp as a diamond city is not just an economic story. It is also a story of craftsmanship and creativity with many talented jewellery designers who have set up shop in Antwerp. A great example is jewellery brand ELLIOT & OSTRICH, founded five years ago by JENNIFER ELLIOT, Antwerp-based with South African roots. Text: Ingrid Dircken Elliot & Ostrich, handmade in Antwerp UNIQUE AND TIMELESS The brand stands out not only with elegant creations featuring special and rare diamonds and gemstones, but also with its very own philosophy: create a unique and timeless piece of jewellery for every customer. In the words of Elliot & Ostrich, jewellery should be ‘unique yet timeless’. To achieve that, Jennifer plays with colours and shapes. As a gemmologist, she personally selects all diamonds and gemstones. She also makes the conscious choice of working only with suppliers who have a heart for quality and ethical sourcing. All Elliot & Ostrich jewellery is crafted by experienced and passionate goldsmiths from the →
Botanic magazine Antwerp diamond industry. The brand was therefore quite rightly awarded the Antwerp’s Most Brillant label. This is the quality label awarded by the city of Antwerp and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC). The label offers customers the assurance that the jewellery shop is reliable and meets strict quality standards. COCOON EXPERIENCE Elliot & Ostrich’s home base is ‘The Nest’. Not your standard jewellery shop with display cases but a magnificent, jewellery lounge hidden in the artistic heart of Antwerp. It’s a very special place where customers live a unique experience. It all starts with an introspection and from within the resulting calmness the search for the right colours, shapes and details starts, letting your jewel tell a personal story. The interior of ‘The Nest’ exudes the jewellery house’s DNA in every detail and is inspired by Jennifer’s African roots. MEANINGFUL MOMENTS Elliot & Ostrich’s jewellery line consists of rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings intended to celebrate all of life’s meaningful moments in a unique way. The different pieces can easily be combined and can also be personalised. The designs are available in white gold, yellow gold and Yosé, a gold alloy designed by Jennifer. It is a warm tone of yellow gold but softer and more timeless than rose gold. A colour that goes very nicely with lighter skin tones. The price for an Elliot & Ostrich collection piece starts at €500 and varies depending on the gemstones and design. The price for the ‘bespoke’ service depends on the customer’s requirements. At Elliot & Ostrich, we work by appointment only. Ordering online is always possible. • www.elliotandostrich.com

Botanic magazine There is something wonderful about nature, and I am lucky to be abundantly surrounded by it. Although our lunch restaurant Het Gebaar is located in the heart of the city, every season touches me intensely. The botanical garden - ‘Den Botaniek’ - that surrounds our establishment breathes the atmosphere of eternity and writes another chapter of history every season. The ancient trees and more than 2,000 plant species are a special piece of nature appreciated by both Antwerp natives and visitors to our beautiful city. The metamorphosis that unfolds every time in the first half of the year is phenomenal. The dark winter months have to make way. The cold earth is showing the first signs of life and you can see it in the garden. The colourful crocuses, daffodils and tulips come peeping and happily nod good morning. That’s when I know: spring has arrived. The first flowers herald an exciting time. Because when the first rays of sunshine break through, the gates of heaven open again for the team at Het Gebaar. Time to set up the outdoor seating area, so we can welcome and indulge our guests in the garden. Nothing is nicer than retreating to our patio and enjoying a tasty lunch in the shade of the century-old trees. As a chef, I find my inspiration in the seasons, and with the botanical garden surrounding our restaurant, I just have to step outside for inspiration. Our menus are always inspired by the wonderful seasonal produce of the moment. The aromatic ramson that comes up, and later the flowers of the borage. And then there is the magnolia, which buds in April... Since Botanic Sanctuary came to the monastery site, there is always something new to experience. With the completion of the hotel’s monastery gardens, the estate has transformed into a genuine fairy tale setting. These new additions infuse the site with a lively energy, and I, along with the entire city, am delighted and proud of this transformation. We recently celebrated our 30th anniversary with Het Gebaar, and we are really proud of that. Being the only lunch restaurant in the Benelux to open only at lunchtime, it is a credit to the entire team that we have part of the culinary top for so long. (Het Gebaar has 1 Michelin star) We didn’t just look back. Just like Den Botaniek, I also keep renewing season after season. I recently launched a very special product: my Tea Vinegar. I worked for four years to get this beautiful and healthy product to market. This vinegar is actually the secret to my desserts, providing the perfect freshness and sourness to any dish. I am so happy to finally share this with the world. Everything is always in movement and nothing is forever. Every spring, the magnolia flower buds thicken, suddenly revealing their intense colour and fragrance. All my life, I have been seeing the first flowers around my birthday on 18 April. A yearly gift from nature. However, nature evolves, and in recent years, it has been blossoming earlier, sometimes as soon as early April. I perceive it as a homage, as April 9th was my father’s birthday. He’s been gone for two years now, and it still pains me. But when the magnolia blooms, my mind drifts to him. The magnolia tree in our garden holds a profound significance for me. Could you make sure to look up as you walk past it? Enjoy the beautiful flowers, the shady foliage and all the other beauty in the garden in all its splendour. I wish you a wonderful stay! • ROGER VAN DA MME ‘The magnolia blooms’

Renowned author and city guide TANGUY OTTOMER, recognized as one of the top guides globally by US CNN, has curated a list of ten must-visit sites and activities within walking distance of the hotel. → Text: Peter Briers © De Westelinck Photography
Botanic magazine 1. Opera The city has no less than two opera houses: the Bourla, which today houses the Toneelhuis, and the Flemish Opera on the Leien. The Bourla was intended for the French-speaking audience, the other one for Flemish fans. Both buildings have impressive interiors. Two opera houses in one city is quite extraordinary, especially for a small city like Antwerp. In the neighbourhood of the Bourla theatre, sometimes called the Latin Quarter of Antwerp, shopping is nice and you’ll find renowned shops such as Chanel, Breitling, Louis Vuitton and Delvaux, the oldest leather and Belgian luxury handbag brand worldwide.” Opera Ballet Vlaanderen Frankrijklei 1, 2000 Antwerp www.operaballet.be Bourla Graanmarkt 7, 2000 Antwerp www.bourla.be 2. Central Station Central Station, one of the most beautiful, impressive stations in the world, used to be the gateway to Antwerp. The building dates from 1905, when the city was experiencing its second golden era. Just by considering all the marble that was used, it is clear that money was no object for the Board. Upon close examination, you can discern dozens of distinct varieties of Belgian marble. Nowadays, the building has 40 exits; back then, there used to be only one. Be sure to make the effort to walk through the monumental hall, the former entrance and exit, and today still the epicentre of the station. Stand in the middle and look up at the dome. In the middle you can see an opening with a roof above it, inspired by an example from Rome: the Pantheon.A walk through Central Station can easily be combined with a visit to the Zoo, one of the most beautiful and oldest zoos in Europe. Koningin Astridplein 27, 2018 Antwerp www.zooantwerpen.be 3. Cathedral The Cathedral of Our Lady, at 123 metres high, is the tallest structure in the city. No other building is taller. Like so many other cathedrals in Europe, this building was never finished as envisioned in the original plan. The cathedral was initially designed to have three towers; in the end, it got just the one. After 170 years of building, the town council felt it had had enough. The entrance to the cathedral is not free. Ticket sales are used to maintain and restore the building. In exchange for their money, visitors can admire some works by Peter Paul Rubens, with The Descent from the Cross being one of his absolute masterpieces. That work later became the centrepiece of a completely different story, i.e. Nello and Patrasche. In the square in front of the cathedral, you will find a white marble statue of Nello and his little dog, the two protagonists of the world-famous story ‘A Dog of Flanders’. Near the cathedral, you will find many effigies of Mother Mary and her child Jesus. Mary is the patron saint of Antwerp. That is also why the city celebrates Mother’s Day on 15 August, the day Mary was caught up into heaven.” Groenplaats 21, 2000 Antwerp www.dekathedraal.be © Piet De Kersgieter

Fashion Museum (MoMu) The roots of the Fashion Museum lie in the 1980s, courtesy of The Antwerp Six, a group of six fashion students who simultaneously graduated within the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently made a name for themselves worldwide. The collective consists of Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee. Because the individual names were difficult for foreigners to pronounce, they were christened The Antwerp Six. While fashion in the 1980s had been mainly colourful, these designers opted for black in a minimalist style. This caused an international shockwave in the fashion industry. Antwerp gradually expanded the fashion story with Modenatie, of which the Fashion Museum is a part. The museum houses a cafeteria and bookstore, the permanent and varying collections, and a fashion library. The top floor houses the fashion academy. Nationalestraat 28, 2000 Antwerp www.momu.be 4. Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) The original idea was to build this museum in the City Park, but in the end the town council chose a neighbourhood that had just been built, and where a World Expo had previously been organised - in 1885. The museum originated from the collection of the Guild of Saint Luke, an Antwerp fraternity of artists and at the same time the fourth oldest art school in the world. Unlike other world cities, where palaces were turned into museums, KMSKA was built specifically to house art. At the museum, you will find art that spans seven centuries and no less than 40 per cent of the works were donated. The building houses some 9,000 pieces, some larger and more impressive than others. You can also find works by Peter Paul Rubens, Ensor and Anthony van Dyck, to name but a few. Leopold de Waelplaats 1, 2000 Antwerp kmska.be 6. Vrijdagmarkt (Friday Market) “The Friday market, not coincidentally on the Vrijdagmarkt square, is the last weekly folklore market on Antwerp territory. In addition to art and antiques, furniture is often sold there by auction.” “On all other days, the square is a melting pot of the so-called ‘brown cafés’, agreeable outdoor seating, wine and cocktail bars, highly regarded catering establishments and the most important museum on the planet. Botanic magazine 8. Vlaeykensgang This charming, private corridor from the 16th century was saved from ruin in the 1960s by decorator, art collector and antique dealer Axel Vervoordt. He still gives tourists the chance to visit this historical showpiece for free. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon - at noon sharp - you can sit on a bench in this corridor and enjoy the carillon concerts, performed in the cathedral tower. During the summer months, you get an extra concert on top on Monday nights. Vlaeykensgang, 2000 Antwerp 9. Godshuis Bontwerkersplaats The Bontwerkersplaats is one of the most enchanting spots in the city. You are not allowed to enter the private courtyard, but you can admire the picturesque houses. If you visit this place, be sure to also explore the neighbouring bistro Goddaard, a venue that oozes love for wine. Wolstraat 37, 2000 Antwerp Bistro Goddaard Grote Goddaard 30, 2000 Antwerp www.wijnbistrogoddaard.be 10. The Eilandje district (Little Island) Once an integral part of the port, The Little Island gradually transformed into an abandoned area of the city following World War II. Today, it hosts a plethora of trendy restaurants and cafes, as well as the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS), established in 2011. This urban revitalization has elevated the Eilandje district to become the most affluent neighborhood in Antwerp. The MAS offers visitors a free chance to admire the city from the roof. The panoramic view of the metropolis is breathtaking. The museum can also be visited in the same breath if you wish. Not far from the MAS is the Red Star Line Museum. During a period of sixty years, this place was the starting point - for two million Eastern Europeans - of their journey to the United States. The Red Star Line ships were making the crossing. The museum is an emotional venue. You won’t find art here, but stories of people who were either allowed to embark or coldly refused. Exotic market / Bird market At the exotic market on Theaterplein (Theatre Square), you will find mostly fruits and vegetables, and you can taste a lot of delicacies at different stalls. The word ‘exotic’ primarily refers to the multicultural nature of the city. Together with New York and Amsterdam, Antwerp is in the top three cities with the greatest diversity of officially registered nationalities. Antwerp alone unites more than 170 different nationalities.” “The exotic market takes place on Saturday, the Bird Market on Sunday, at exactly the same location. After training as a physiotherapist and osteopath, Spa Director Xavier Le Clef earned a doctorate in Chinese medicine and acupuncture. He runs his own practice specialising in therapies that colour outside the lines of conventional medicine. “And yet: I am not a science sceptic,” he says. “Science is essential and should always be the basis. The same applies to what we do at Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp.” The Health Spa, which was awarded a Star Award for Best City Spa in 2023, is something special. To what extent was that always the plan? “From day one, our intention was to not create another classic hotel spa, with massages, saunas and pools, but to provide a platform that would give us room to grow into a medical spa. We start by screening the health capital a person has, by using measurements based on certain technologies. Once we have the results, we provide targeted advice on possible therapies, such as acupuncture, osteopathy, physiotherapy or comprehensive frequency screening.” What relevant information can such a screening provide? “Our body is made up of cells. The mitochondria - the electrical parts within a cell, so to speak - have a certain frequency. We are going to measure those accurately. Sometimes the frequency may be too high, in other cases too low, indicating inflammation. Just to be clear, a screening does not result in a medical, but an energetic diagnosis.” “What can we do to improve an anomalous frequency?” is the next question. At best, we can calm the inflammation, which can have an immediate effect for the patient. It gets even better if we can intervene before the frequency starts fluctuating. Preventive work and prevention are even better than cure.” Suppose a low frequency is measured. What could that mean? “That the cell works less efficiently. In that case, we can outline a concrete treatment to return the frequency to normal. Such a treatment plan may include acuPioneer in preventive medicine XAVIER LE CLEF is a man with a mission: upgrade BOTANIC SANCTUARY ANTWERP’S HEALTH SPA to a medical prevention centre. Not for the happy few, but for everyone who needs it. “With our holistic 360° vision of people’s health, we are true pioneers. A treatment tailored to each patient? It does exist.” Text: Peter Briers
47 puncture or osteopathy, either or not combined with a session with our beautician or exercise therapy in our gym. In the near future, we also intend to start working with blood analyses and vitamin supplements. For those interventions, we will rely on classical doctors. But that’s for later. We want to learn how to walk before we start running.” Some people are already calling it pioneering. Is it really? “Absolutely. What we are doing is similar to what Swiss spa resorts have already been doing for some time. We want to walk the same path, but still stand out with the technologies we use at the hotel. We are advocates of a holistic approach and diagnosis, a 360° view of health in general.” CREDIBLE Preventive medicine has always been a sensitive topic. For every believer, there are at least two non-believers. Or, have the times changed? “That is still true today, unfortunately. Unrightfully so, because preventive medicine is the only answer to the current problems within Belgian and European healthcare facilities. Our medical practice is among the absolute best, no doubt, but it is becoming increasingly unaffordable and is too often based on existing symptoms. On healing when the harm has already been done. We need to spend more time and energy looking for the causes of those symptoms. If you find problems in time, early intervention is still possible in many cases. We want to further expand the offer of preventive medical care at the hotel.” → Science is essential and should always be the basis.
Botanic magazine This may eventually involve other medical disciplines. How far are you willing to go, as a Spa Director? “The ambition is to accommodate all major medical disciplines at the hotel. For example, if a test reveals an abnormal heart rate and treatment at the hotel cannot correct the problem, we should be able to share the results with a cardiologist. In the long run, we want to bring all that knowledge together in one place.” What does this ambition mean for the existing luxury offer, such as massages and facials? “Those services will remain available. There is nothing wrong with pampering people, but it should not stop there. That is why we work with specific therapies and also have quite a large gym.” Everything depends on the credibility of a project. How is that going? “Credibility has been and still remains a big challenge. This is why we deliberately choose to bas all our activities on scientific knowledge. And there’s good news when it comes to that, the new generation of classical doctors is paying attention to our views. And we are sure more and more of them will soon follow.” ACCESSIBLE The former St Elizabeth Hospital was open to a all strata of society, which was a deliberate choice. To what extent does Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp follow that philosophy? “Our target audience is also broad: from guests at the hotel and regular members of the gym to people who visit the spa from outside and want to have a screening. Our initiative is not just for the happy few, but for everyone who needs it. Everyone is welcome. That’s also why we are keeping the price competitive, despite the advanced technology we use. A screening costs €170.00, a fraction of the price people pay elsewhere.” No better advertisement than excellent references. How are the initial reactions? “Very positive. Most of the conditions we have treated so far are burnout, chronic conditions and back pain. Some patients feel that no more treatment is available for them in conventional medicine and then come to us. It is very gratifying when we find that we can help them. Getting many more people the right treatment is what we are all about.” Whether Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp will make history with its medical spa, the future will tell. In all modesty, what do you think? “History is in the making here, no doubt about that. We are not inventing the technology, but with our 360° view of the whole body, we can give people the right treatment. Unfortunately, we will not succeed in making people live longer. But we are already succeeding today in making people grow older with a better physical condition.” • We are advocates of a holistic approach and diagnosis, a 360° view of health in general.
