A MESSAGE FROM

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

As I embark on my first year as the Head of School at Albert College, it is my pleasure to present the Donor
Impact 2018-19 Report.

Albert College cannot accomplish all that we do without the support of the AC community, and I want
to thank you: our students, teachers, staff, parents, alumni, past parents, Board members, and greater
community for your generous support. Whether you made a monetary donation, volunteered your time, or
shared your talents, I want you to know how much it is appreciated; this is what makes Albert College the
amazing school it is.

At Convocation, the Class of 2019 tossed their graduation caps in the air and all 35 graduates went off
this past September to the post-secondary schools of choice. These students – like all of our graduates
over the past 163 years - left Albert ready to face the next chapters in their lives as confident, courageous,
collaborative, creative, and compassionate young adults. They carry with them the experiences from Albert
that will continue to shape them for many years to come.

These experiences are only possible because of the dedication of the Albert community and its commitment
to our vision of, “providing academic excellence and developing courageous global citizens within a close
family environment.” During the 2018-19 school year, our focus was on implementing the first year of the
2018-23 Strategic Plan: Small School • Open Minds • Bright Futures. Your generous donations have helped to
make our strategic goals a reality.

I hope that you take a few moments to read this report and know how much we appreciate the generous
support of our AC community.

With gratitude,

Mark Musca, Head of School

A MESSAGE FROM

THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The 2018-19 year at Albert College was one that brought us hurdles to overcome and opportunities to grow
and evolve. With mixed emotion, the Board of Governors accepted that our long term Head of School,
Keith Stansfield would retire at the end of the academic year. A Head’s Search Committee was formed and
successfully recruited and hired our new Head of School, Mark Musca.

Albert College’s Board Chair, John Barritt, also finished his two-year term as Chair, and I have now taken
on this leadership role. During 2018-19, we worked through the first year of the 2018-23 Strategic Plan: Small
School • Open Minds • Bright Futures and the creation of a Financial Strategic Plan to support our goals. It was
a challenging and rewarding year. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Mr. Stansfield and Mr. Barritt ’68
for their hard work, loyalty and dedication. Change is always hard and they both stepped up to the challenges
and made it seamless.

It is my pleasure to serve as the new Chair of the Board of Governors at Albert College. I will work with
the Board to strengthen the mission and vision of Albert College and to position the school for the future
by continuing to implement the 2018-23 Strategic Plan. There is more greatness on the horizon at Albert
College, to continue to provide our students with the people, places and processes integral to the goals that
will move Albert College forward and have our students thrive. Your financial support of these important
initiatives by contributing to the Annual Fund or supporting upcoming special projects is greatly appreciated.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I would like to thank you for your past and continuing support of
Albert College and I hope you enjoy this Donor Impact Report.

Sincerely,

Alison Gilbert, Chair of the Board of Governors

A MESSAGE FROM

THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

GRATITUDE
Thank you. These two words are the inspiration for our first Annual Donor Impact Report. We wanted to
show the gratitude that is felt for all that is given to Albert College. Our community of students, families,
alumni, staff and friends give their time, dedication and financial gifts to ensure that we provide a school
environment that embraces academic innovation while strengthening our commitment to our core values
and vision.

TRANSPARENCY
Albert College is an independent school, which means it is a not-for-profit charitable organization that
operates with a volunteer Board of Governors. Albert College is a registered Canadian charity and complies
with the regulations set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). We wanted to show our donors how we
devote our resources to inspiring excellence in the 5 ‘A’s: Academics, Arts, Athletics, Active Citizenship and
Adventure. Every year, our community helps us to further our mission by making financial contributions to
Albert College through our Annual Fund and this past year, for the Memorial Chapel and Ackerman Hall
Accessibility Project. This Report illustrates where the money comes from and how it is spent.

IMPACT
While tuition funds our mission and vision, donations provide Albert College with additional resources that
enrich our programs and allow us to go above and beyond. The gifts that you have given have helped us to
implement the first year of our Strategic Plan, focusing on our people, places and processes. Please take a
moment to flip through this Report to see the impact your donations have had on inspiring, balancing and
attracting our students. The impact of your investment in our school is enormous and we want you to see
that impact for students today and in the future. Your donations help us become the school we aspire to be.

So, back to the two words that were the inspiration for this Report. Thank you. They may be simple words, but
we hope they express our deep appreciation for your generosity and support.

With sincere gratitude,

Helen Walsh, ACFRE, CFRE, Director of Advancement

ENDOWMENT

OUR SAVINGS ACCOUNTS

Our school’s endowment funds are its savings accounts. The endowment funds provide long-term financial
stability for the school, ensuring that it has the resources to plan for the future. The Albert College
Endowment Funds are managed by an independent financial organization and overseen according to the
investment policy statements approved by the Board of Governors.

Gifts to endowments are invested and only a portion of income generated each year is used for
specific purposes such as scholarships and bursaries, professional development, chairs in music, musical
performances and facility and program enhancements. A named endowment fund may be established with
a gift of $25,000. In 2019, $140,000 (2018 - $140,000) was transfered to the Operating Fund to support
scholarships and bursaries as well as all specific Endowed funds.

Investments are managed by investment managers who are under the direction of the Finance Committee
reporting to the Board of Governors. The College has an investment strategy with the objective to maximize
the rate of return on all funds entrusted to it while preserving capital. The funds are managed by Burgundy
Asset Management Ltd.

LEGACY GIFT

ACCESSIBILITY PROJECT

In May 2019, The Memorial Chapel and Ackerman Hall Accessibility Project was announced to honour
outgoing Head of School, Mr. Keith Stansfield. Mr. Stansfield has always been very passionate about the
traditions of Albert College and ensuring that services such as our lovely Candlelight Ceremony of Lessons
and Carols at Christmas, Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day continue to be held in our beautiful Memorial
Chapel.

As well, AC hosts a variety of other events including drama and music productions, public lectures, guest
performers and the Quinte Rotary Music Festival Concert of Stars, where many local students showcase
their musical talents to hundreds of people each year. We also host Canadian Citizenship ceremonies,
welcoming our newest Canadians to the Quinte area. Paired hand in hand with the Memorial Chapel,
Ackerman Hall is a traditional gathering space for many events including the Gala, winter concert, Christmas
banquet and many more celebratory meals.

We embarked on a campaign to raise $450,000 to provide a lift and an accessible washroom to ensure
that everyone, no matter their challenge or disability, would have access to these spaces. Whether it is
older alumni who can no longer manage the stairs, family members who are wheelchair bound, or disabled
community members wanting to attend an event or visit this lovely historic building, it was time to make the
heart and soul of Albert College accessible to all.

We are happy to say that Mr. Stansfield’s dream is almost a reality. By June 30, 2019, over $244,000 had
been raised and as of Oct. 31, 2019, we have $350,000! We are still working hard to raise the additional
funds needed to finish the job and know that the Albert community will step up and ensure we can complete
this much needed project.

PLAY KITCHEN & LIGHT TABLE
IN PRE-KINDERGARTEN

“The Pre-Kindergarten class is excitedly anticipating the arrival of their new play kitchen. Dramatic play,
including a play kitchen, is extremely important in child development in the early years, fostering skills in
creativity and imagination, language and communication, social skills and teamwork, life skills, independence
and self-confidence, problem solving, numeracy and fine motor skills.
The children are also looking forward to their new light table. At present we have a small one in the classroom
which is extremely popular but does not allow the opportunity for cooperative play due to its size. The light
table also has many benefits for children of pre-kindergarten age, including development of critical thinking,
problem solving, math, science and literacy.” - Mary Almeida, Pre-Kindergarten Teacher

KEYBOARDS IN MUSIC CLASS

Ms. Paul is thrilled with the arrival of two new Yamaha Clavinovas keyboards. These new digital keyboards
have replaced 20-year-old digital pianos in the vocal music classroom, the Memorial Chapel and Ackerman
Hall. Technology is wonderful and, our students and their teacher, are excited about what our new pianos can
do.

“One of the many benefits of these keyboards is the ease of use when incorporating technology. I can easily
record and layer tracks for students through the USB port, and can create accompaniment tracks to share as
mp3’s with students. The built-in bluetooth speakers are also terrific allowing students to pair the keyboard
with their smart phones and laptops to play or sing along to existing recordings!”

- Erin Paul, Florence Meta Moon Chair in Vocal Music

PARLAY SOFTWARE SYSTEM
IN THE SENIOR SCHOOL

Parlay is an online learning program that puts
students and their unique perspectives at
the heart of learning. From secret identities
to digital hand raises, Parlay increases
student voice and encourages a diversity of
perspectives.

Parlay is benefiting students at the Senior
School by ensuring deep and intentional
discussions online and in person, inside and
outside the classroom.

ATTRACTING

NEW SCOREBOARD
IN THE SENIOR SCHOOL GYM

The Senior School gymnasium has a new LED scoreboard that is being enjoyed by fans and players this athletic
season. We now have great peace of mind as our scoreboard provides pro-level scoring. The scoreboard is
complete with a new precision control, LED lights and protective enclosure. This new scoreboard was funded
through donations to the Annual Fund and the Class of 2019.

BOOKS FOR FOREST OF READING

The Forest of Reading program is a critically acclaimed reading program from the Ontario Library Association.

It features new books from Canadian authors and illustrators, and puts them into the hands of students who,

after reading and discussing them, participate in a province-wide vote to crown the winning author, the best

of the best in Juvenile Literature. Thanks to the Annual Fund, students at Albert College have been enjoying

the Forest of Reading program for 12 years. 19

EQUIPMENT IN MAKERSPACE

“The MakerSpace movement has swept North America, and Albert College, in recent years. ‘Maker’
cultivates innovation and creativity outside of a structured, graded classroom environment. Our students
are exposed to materials, including low and high-tech tools to explore new ways to capture and fabricate any
idea that they can imagine.” - Mary Hartling, Library Services Coordinator

PROJECTOR
IN THE MEMORIAL CHAPEL

“The new, more powerful, professional-level projector that
we are permanently mounting in the Memorial Chapel will
be a huge step forward when presenting videos as part
of morning announcements, or for formal performances
such as the Shewfelt Memorial Lecture. It will provide
a much brighter, clearer image, and will be completely
wireless in its operation. Presenters can connect remotely
to the projector and control their presentations in a much
simpler fashion, with a better image being presented.”

BALANCING

HEALTH & WELLBEING
WITH DR. GREG WELLS

2018-23 Strategic Plan: Small
School • Open Minds • Bright Futures. We were pleased to welcome Dr. Greg Wells to Albert College in June to
to bring Dr. Wells to Albert College came from the McCullough-Andrews Teaching Fellowship, donations to
Head’s Initiatives from the Annual Fund and an individual donation.

Support for professional development is impacting students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12
at Albert College through our Food Services lunch and snacks program. Reduced sugars and more

have been reduced and new healthier alternatives were introduced in September.

Support for professional development is impacting students in Grade 4 and 5. With the lights dimmed
and students comfortably seated, a melodious voice fills the air taking students and teachers through
inner awareness and regular breathing for seven-minutes. Mindfulness programs help students feel
calmer, improves focus, helps students self-regulate, and strengthens relationships.

“Albert College truly caters to the boarding community in an amazing way. Every time anything has come
up, the school has been quick to respond, quick to help out and fast in helping us resolve. We are so thankful
and so lucky that we made the decision to send our son here! He loves the environment, has made amazing
friends and his time there will be forever remembered!” - Ana Lemus, parent of Eugenio Lemus ’19
