The Royal Montreal Golf Club

The Gazetteer
End of Season 2012

Pro Shop

by Bob and Peggy Hogarth

In the words of another Bob, “Thanks for the
memories”. As Peg and I reflect on our years here
at Royal Montreal, many emotions flood over us.
The first is gratitude. We are grateful that we had
an opportunity to participate in the history of this
great golf club. We are also grateful that, when
we arrived in 1992, we were received graciously.
We were guided, gently yet firmly, to honour not
only the traditions of Royal Montreal but also the
subtleties of social grace that is the backbone of
this club. Thank you to those Members.

As the years unfolded, we felt privileged to have
shared your perseverance in mastering this
complicated sport. We have felt your frustrations,
celebrated your accomplishments and laughed at
many of your exploits as you strive to conquer this
humbling game. I thank those Members who have
allowed themselves to be the brunt of my somewhat embellished Saturday and Sunday morning stories. It was all in the
name of fun.

To those Members who have supported our endeavours in the Pro Shop, a huge “thank you.” The times are changing,
making it difficult to compete against the retail giants. For those of you who support the “little man”, please continue to do so.
They are the ones who mentor your children and help you every step of the way as you pursue your golfing dreams.

Finally, to those Members who have invited us to be part of their personal lives, we have enjoyed the births of your children
and grandchildren. Over the years, we have experienced pride in watching them grow into, not only competent golfers, but
also Members of which Royal Montreal should be proud. I have had the honour of mentoring many Juniors along the way. I
am filled with pride to see the worthy adults they have become. To those of you who have shared their sorrows and hardships
with us, you will always be in our hearts and prayers.

As we prepare to leave; your handshakes, hugs and best wishes for our happy retirement from Royal Montreal are deeply
appreciated and heart felt. In return, we wish all of you triumphs with your game and the creation of many fond memories of
this Club, such as the ones we are taking away with us. We leave you with Peg’s Dad’s favourite blessing:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
May the good Lord hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Sincerely,
Bob and Peggy

From the Red Tees by Ken Morrison

Following a cool start in May, we have enjoyed a long, hot and dry Summer. It has been a good year for our Seniors,
although attendance at the Thursday Scrambles can be described as only moderately successful. We hope that moving
the time back to 9:00 a.m. and changing the format modestly will result in greater participation in 2013.

From a social standpoint, our two Senior Member-Guest Days were resounding successes as was our visit to the Senators
at Kanawaki. We look forward to next year when we receive the Senators at RMGC. We enjoyed a good competitive
golfing season through the Swedish Bowl, the Lovett Trophy, the C.R. Murray Trophy, the Senior and Super Senior
Championships. The quality of the competitions in these events sets our Club apart from most others.

Once again, the Senior Interclub Team provided us with one of the year’s highlights. Our twelve-man team defended
their Group I Interclub title against teams from Hawkesbury, Kanawaki and Summerlea in style, taking 52 of a possible 60
points. We have won the Group I title for three consecutive years and 6 of the last 8 years. We will be defending our title
next year at Summerlea.

One last item; after much contemplation, we have come to the conclusion that playability of our Courses from the Red
Tees can be enhanced with only a few minor changes – relocation of the tee blocks on 2 holes and the construction of
2 new tees. These recommendations will be passed on to the Permanent Course Committee before the end of October.
Have a great Winter – we hope to see all of you next Spring!

Junior Report by William Mitchell

The 2012 Junior Golf Season at Royal Montreal was filled with
many wonderful memories, achievements and experiences.
Attendance at our Wednesday Junior Days was the strongest
in recent years. Our younger players enjoyed complimentary
instructional clinics and play on the Dixie Course, while our
more accomplished players participated in both competitive and
friendly play on the Red and Blue courses. New for 2012, were
the informal “Solheim” matches. These friendly events were
organized by Heather Doucet and were popular with our teen
girls.

2012 Junior Interclub Team On the competitive side, our Royal Montreal Boys and Girls
competed in the Junior League matches versus other Juniors

from Beaconsfield, Summerlea and Whitlock. The primary goal of these matches is to introduce our young golfers to a competitive

environment while placing a strong emphasis on representing Royal Montreal with Pride, Integrity and Sportsmanship. Following

the four field days held throughout July, our Boys’ Team finished in second place while our Girls’ Team finished third.

Other team events for 2012 included the Coupe-du-Traversier matches versus Laval-sur-le-Lac and the Montreal District Junior
Interclub matches. In the Laval matches, the Ryder Cup style competition was closed out on the final hole of play with Royal
Montreal winning the Cup for the third straight year. In the Junior Group 1 Interclub matches held at Beloeil, our boys from RMGC
brought home the title with a near perfect performance. Through the eight individual matches versus Juniors from Beloeil, la
Vallée du Richelieu and Bellevue, our Boys secured an incredible 44 out of a possible 48 points. What a show!

The Junior Program at Royal Montreal is, without a doubt, among the finest anywhere. This level of excellence is a direct result
of the support and encouragement received from our Membership and the dedication of our volunteer parents. On behalf of
our Junior community, I would like to thank the Board of Directors, our Ladies’ and Seniors’ Branches and our fellow Members
for their continued support. In addition, I would like to thank our Clubhouse Staff, our Professionals Ryan Ellis, Tyler Cooper,
Lindsay Wilson and Ryan Rinneard, and Junior Co-ordinator Devin McKinley for their enthusiastic contributions. In particular,
our many thanks to Peggy and Bob Hogarth for their wonderful support over the years.

In closing, I would also like to recognize and thank the Junior Committee members who volunteer their time for the benefit of our
young golfers: Heather Doucet, Sheila Jablonski, Julie Piers, Wayne Bews, Paul Desjardins, Bob Robinson, Rob Tyndall and
Marc Vallée. Thank You all for your dedicated work.

Food and Beverage Committee by Stan Jablonski

The season is coming to a rapid end and we are preparing for the Fall events which will mark the end of another successful season
here at Royal Montreal. It is important that we start this report with a note of significant gratitude to Chef Robert Boisvert, Derek
Patino, Dino Bassanese and all their hard working staff who provided service with a smile; the Food and Beverage Committee;
and last but not least, Denzil Palmer, who was a great source of sage advice in my first year as Committee Chair. One thing you
learn very quickly is that it is not easy to please all the people all the time and that there is not one correct answer for many of the
problems that are being faced on a day to day basis.

The most significant change that we undertook was to create a “Feedback” system that was accessible to all Members. Many
thanks to all of you who used this system to let us know what was on your mind. The critical comments were just as important as
the many positive comments that we received. We realize that this area is a moving target and needs constant attention. This can
only be achieved by an involved Membership. In many areas, we were able to see an overall trend and every effort was made to
adjust what was being offered to reflect Members’ needs.

Here are a few examples of changes that were driven by the Membership:

• children of all ages were welcomed to the weekly Sunday Family Buffet in The Grill and 19th Hole;
• Members’ Corporate Days relaxed their dress code to make it easier to entertain your special customers;
• we expanded the number of Special Guest Saturdays which provided a perfect venue to entertain your guests and showcase

the Club at a very reasonable cost;
• Intermediates were encouraged to participate and their Member-Guest Day was a great success (good work Niraj);
• the Menu was changed during the course of the Season to provide more variety and the Chef provided some great specials

every week;
• pricing is always a concern; and we listened to what was being said by removing or reducing any item over $30;
• double digit beer pricing also proved to be a note of grave concern and was adjusted accordingly; and then we added to

the spirit of events such as the British Open and Canadian Open by providing additional reductions.

These are just a few of the changes that were introduced and we hope to do more in the coming year. We are already looking at
our schedule of events and working on spreading them out during the course of the Summer so that more people can attend next
season. If you have ideas, please send them in and we will look at them all. How about a more casual Seafood Night?

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who supported our Club throughout the Season and then take the time
to give us your important feed back. With your help, we will continue to make improvements where necessary.

Buildings Committee by Jeremy Bolger

Kitchen and Staff Service Area Expansion

Throughout the off-season of 2012-2013, the Downstairs Kitchen area will undergo an extensive renovation. The plan calls for
updating and expansion, also including the creation of an expanded Staff Service Area on both the 1st and 2nd Floors.

The project to renovate and redesign the functionality of the Kitchen was initiated for several reasons, including:

• A significantly increased volume of food service from the Downstairs Kitchen. The Kitchens originates from a 1959 design
intended to serve light snacks only. Originally, most meals were served in the Dining Room on the 2nd Floor.

• Safety. Some features of the existing Downstairs Kitchen do not comply with current Building Code standards and it is
necessary for the safety of Staff and Members to make the changes.

• A need for storage area expansion. Currently there is, bar, refrigeration and other equipment stored in the kitchen corridors.
• Much-needed 2nd Floor Staff Service Areas and additional storage will be added above the renovated Downstairs Kitchen.

The planning process for this important renovation has been ongoing for the past two years. The project was tendered last Fall and
multiple sealed bids were received. The bids were reviewed and the project was deferred for one year to provide for its completion
within a specific timeframe and to ensure a superior result at the most reasonable cost. The funds for this venture have been
allocated from within the Club’s approved Capital Budget and will not detrimentally impact any of the Club’s other requisite or
planned capital expenditures.

Construction began after Thanksgiving Day, on October 9th, and is proceeding as scheduled with a projected completion date of
March 29, 2013.

All Members are invited to follow the progress of the renovation by viewing photographs that will be posted on the RMGC website
throughout the construction period.

Artifact Display Program by Alan Lindsay

Recently, the Club’s artifact display program received from
Dr. Jonathan L. Meakins an exceptionally generous gift of a
1774 McEwan wooden driver in excellent condition, complete
with a display case. It is one of the oldest McEwans in the
Club’s collection.

The club was originally given to Jonathan’s grandfather, Jonathan Campbell Meakins, by his department in Edinburgh where he
had been recruited from McGill to be The Christison Professor of Therapeutics. In 1924, Dr. J.C. Meakins returned to McGill as
Chairman of Medicine and Physician in Chief at the Royal Victoria Hospital, hence the parting gift from his department at Edinburgh.

We are pleased that Jonathan thought of Royal Montreal’s archives as a home for his grandfather’s treasure. Representatives of
the Meakins family have been long time Members of the Club. Jonathan’s grandfather was a Member in 1915, his father in 1936,
and Jonathan himself since 1963. In addition, the father-in-law of Jonathan’s grandfather, Fayette Brown, was Club President in
1902-1903.

The Club is most appreciative of Jonathan’s generous gift.
