Lesson 1: Putting Up a Retail Store

Retailing is an activity that involves selling
commodities directly to consumers. The
individual involved in retailing is the
retailer.He/ She is the one who sells goods or
commodities directly to consumers. These
items are purchased from the manufacturer

or wholesaler and sold them to the end- user
at a marked -up price.

Importance of Retailing

1. Retail stores help consumers with limited budget to be
able to buy the items which are badly needed in small
quantities at lesser amount.
2. Retail Stores offer personalized services like
gift-wrapping or free delivery to nearby customers.
3. Retail stores offer a wide range of merchandise like a
medicine that does not need a doctor prescription and
common household items such as nails,wires and pins,
4. Retail stores are open everyday from morning to
evening and are usually located within or very close to the
neighborhood.

Problems in Selling

1. Desire to easy and unreasonable profits.
2. Presence of too many competitors.
3. Buying of unnecessary supplies.
4. Uncontrolled debts
5. Mismanagement of capital
6. Lack of knowledge in operating retail store

Factors in Considering Putting Up a Retail Store
1. Capital - it refers to the amount of money to be spent in
order to put up a sari sari store.

2. Merchandise - this refers to the commercial goods that
you put in your store for sale.

3. Facilities - These are cabinets, shelves,tabkes,benches, and
other pieces of items that are needed to operate the store.

4. Location- refers to place like school,church ,town and plaza or
terminal buses,factories. On the other hand, it is not advisable to
put this up in a place near a market or big supermalls .Customers
have a notion that goods in big retail stores are better and cheaper.

5. Pleasing Personality- A storekeeper should win people.
He/She must be patient ,honest and friendly when dealing with the
buyer.
