Lesson 2: Different Kinds of ICT tools
For every job, there is the right tool. Make
sure that you are familiar with the correct
use of each a tool that is used for the
current task. Skilled use of tools and
software makes the job less difficult and
ensures that tasks are performed properly
and safety.
To complete hardware repairs, it is
important to have a tool kit that should
contain all of the needed tools. As you gain
experience, you will learn which tools to
have available for different types of jobs
Hardware tools are classified into
four categories:
Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools Short for
Electro-Static Discharge, ESD is one of the few
things you can do to damage or destroy your
computer or parts of your computer. Like the shock
you receive when rubbing your feet on the carpet
and touching something metal, ESD can occur when
working in your computer and can cause damage to
components.
1. Anti-static wrist strap is a strap that wraps
around the user's wrist like a bracelet and has a
cord or other connection coming from that bracelet
that attaches to the computer. The wrist strap keeps
the user grounded, which helps prevent
electro-static damage to a computer or any other
electro-static sensitive device.
2. Anti-static mat is a floor or table mat used to help
reduce the risk of electro-static discharge while working on
a computer or other electro-static sensitive device.
Hand Tools
A hand tool is a device for performing work on a material or
a physical system using only hands. Hand tools can be
used manually or electrically powered, using electrical
current. Most tools used in the computer assembly process
are small hand tools. They are available individually or as
part of a computer repair toolkit. Toolkits range widely in
size, quality, and price. Some common hand tools and
their uses are:
1. Flat-head screwdriver is used to tighten or loosen
slotted screws.
2. Phillips-head screwdriver is used to tighten or loosen
cross-headed screws.
3. Torx is used to tighten or loosen screws that have a depression
on the top, a feature that is mainly on laptops
4. Hex driver is used to tightening or loosen nuts in the same way
that a tightens or loosens screws (sometimes called a nut driver).
5. Slotted screwdriver is a good screwdriver with magnetic,
interchangeable bits and a comfortable handle. The magnetic tip
will prevent screws falling into the PC, and will let you get access to
drives mounted deep in your system case.
6. Nut driver is the really important one because this is the size of
nut most commonly used on PCs. These hexagonal nuts are used
as mounting hardware for motherboards, serial, and parallel ports.
7. Needle nose tweezer is useful for grasping small items
and for removing and replacing jumpers on circuit boards.
8. Soldering iron is essential for repairing circuit boards but
seldom being used and it is quite dangerous for improper use.
9. Wire cutter/stripper is for wire cutting and stripping
insulation on single, multiple, and fine stranded wire cables
with plastic or rubber insulation.
10. Spare part tube is used to hold extra computer
screws, nuts, and washers.
11. Part retriever is used to retrieve parts from locations
that are too small for your hand to fit.
12. Flashlight is used to light up areas that you cannot
see well.
13. Crimper is used to attach connectors to wires.
14. Punch-down tool is used to terminate wire into
termination blocks. Some cable connectors must be
connected to cables using a punch-down tool.
Cleaning Tools
Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when
maintaining and repairing computers. Using the
appropriate cleaning tools helps ensure that computer
components are not damaged during cleaning. Cleaning
tools include the following:
1. Soft cloth is used to clean different computer
components without scratching or leaving debris.
2. Compressed air is used to blow away dust and debris
from different computer parts withoutouching the
components.
3. Cable ties are used to bundle cables neatly insid ande
outside of a computer.
4. Parts organizer is used to hold screws, jumpers,
fasteners, and other small parts and prevents them from
getting mixed together.
