Members and Friends of Calvary Baptist Church,
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ! We are honored to serve as co-chairs
of this 25th Pastoral anniversary celebration,
commemorating 25 years of Pastor and People. We
are filled with gratitude for Pastor Carter and for each
of you who are sharing in this celebration.
This is indeed a momentous occasion for Calvary Baptist Church. In our 126 years as a
congregation, Pastor Carter is the only pastor to have reached this 25 year milestone. We must
honor this occasion with praise and thanksgiving for the journey and the blessings God has
granted us thus far. However, it is also important to look forward to the future gifts God has in
store for us as Pastor and People. Our lineage provides a solid foundation as we prepare to do
great things as a ministry. Our 2015 church theme, “Embracing The Not Yet”, encourages us to be
alert and present so that we can accept what God has destined for us as a congregation.
Thank you, God, for giving us a Pastor after your own heart. Thank you for a Pastor who labors in
the Word of God to preach and teach so that we can grow spiritually. Thank you for a Pastor who
prepares us to do ministry that glorifies you. Thank you for a Pastor who prays with us and for us
as we seek your direction. Thank you for a Pastor who encourages us to embrace the not yet and
to actively engage in our individual and collective destiny. Amen.
Thank you! We hope you enjoy this evening. Cherish the memories and welcome the future!
Warmest Regards,
Joe and Donna Wilson

CHURCH HISTORY
It was on the first Sunday in March 1889, that nine baptized
believers in Christ met to consider the possibility of forming
a local church. Under the leadership Rev. Albert M. Lowery
they organized Calvary Baptist Church.
In 1895, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. George Edmund
Morris, our 5th pastor, a new church building was erected.
“The church cornerstone was laid on October 3, 1895.”
Rev. Morris was succeeded by the Rev. Samuel S. Crockett who
took charge of the work in June 1914. During his pastorate the
Church purchased a parsonage on the corner of Willow Street and Evergreen Avenue (now Martin
Luther King Avenue) and two extra lots on December 7, 1914.
During the pastorate of the Rev. James Coleman, our 10th pastor, an Official Building Committee
was formed. Land for a new parsonage was purchased and a new one was constructed in 1955.
The property that had been the old parsonage and two extra lots purchased in 1914 became the
site for the new building.
This committee, chaired by Rev. Coleman with Trustee Ryland Anderson and others, moved fast.
The old parsonage was demolished and construction of the two-story addition was begun in
1959. The Rev. Jerry Matthew Carter, Jr., our 14th pastor, continues the legacy of a church building
being much more than a place where a congregation gathers for worship on Sundays through his
Vision initiatives.
Calvary is a place of community service. Our church has long been noted for its involvement
in the community. Because of our vision for the community, we have expanded our physical
facilities, including the educational wing with numerous rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen with
excellent cooks, a 500-seating capacity fellowship hall and much more. We give thanks for a
well-managed blessing of paying off all indebtedness and canceling the mortgage as of December
14, 2001. “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised for His mercy endureth forever”.
Today, we find that this present “place of community service” again does not provide the physical
space to house our senior Pastor’s vision. Therefore, this season involves a look backward and
also a look forward. Our church is becoming more diverse racially and ethnically. How does this
affect church programming? How does it affect church location? The facts and questions go on
and on. Our challenge is to ever be in touch with the mood and mindset of our world. We pray
that God will help us to minister to the present age.

Rev. Jerry M. Carter, Jr.
hails from Columbus, Ohio, and has served
since 1990 as the fourteenth pastor of the
Calvary Baptist Church of Morristown, New
Jersey. During his tenure, numerous ministries
have been initiated, and many lives have
been changed and committed to Christ.
Rev. Carter’s influence extends beyond
Calvary. A lecturer at the Hampton Ministers
Conference, he has served as adjunct
professor of preaching at Drew Theological
School and an instructor of homiletics at
Princeton Theological Seminary’s Summer
Institute. A number of preachers have attended his “How Shall They Hear” preaching conference,
which is designed to impact preachers who impact churches that impact the world. Indirectly, he
has inspired others through his published works in the New Interpreters Handbook of Preaching,
Oxford Sermons Volume III, Evangelizing the Black Male in the 21st Century, The African American
Pulpit, and his recently released book, The Empowered Life: Living Well in the Spirit. Locally, he
serves on various community and clergy boards.
Rev. Carter received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from Denison University in
Granville, Ohio, and completed the Master of Divinity degree at Princeton Theological Seminary
in Princeton, New Jersey. Continuing his education, he earned a Ph.D. in liturgical studies with
special emphasis on homiletics from Drew University.
Rev. Carter is married to Melisa Rooks Carter, and they have been blessed with three children,
Jerry M. III, Zachary Daniel, and Camille.

Reverend Jerry M. Carter, Jr.
Reverend Carter,
We rejoice with you and the Calvary Baptist Church congregation in celebrating
this milestone.
People say that one person can’t make a difference in the world…but we know that
isn’t true, because we’ve seen the difference you make in the lives of those around
you.
Faith is making yesterday a stepping stone, today a new beginning, tomorrow
a limitless possibility. Thank you for your expression of faith.
May your paths be filled with simple joys and blessings without end and may you
and the Church continue to be “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the
work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
(1Corinthians 15:58)
Reverend Robert C. Rogers, Pastor
Pastor Carter,
Melany and I want to wish you and your wife best wishes on this most wonderful event. As the very first Son of
Calvary to be licensed by you in 1993, I owe you so very much. Therefore, I honor you on this very special day
for investing and developing me along my ministry path.
Although, the Emmanuel congregation has never met
you, they feel as though they know you as I often quote you and talk about the great ministry leadership from
Morristown, New Jersey.
