To communicate clearly when you are speaking in English, it’s important to stress
the correct syllables in each word. This is called word stress, which means pronouncing
one syllable of a multisyllabic word with greater emphasis (stress) than the other
syllables in the word. Here are four general rules to keep in mind about word stress as
you practice pronunciation:

One syllable - Stress the first (and only) syllable.
Two syllables - Stress the first or second syllable.
Generally, two-syllable nouns, adjectives, and adverbs stress the first syllable,
First syllable examples: happy (HAP-py), little (LIT-tle), and running (RUN-ning).
while two-syllable verbs stress the second syllable.
Second syllable examples: record (re-CORD), combine (come-BINE), and insist
(in-SIST).
Three syllables - Stress can be on the first, second, or third syllable, depending
on how the word ends.
Stress the first syllable on words ending with -er (ballplayer), -or (monitor), -ly
(frequently), or -y (library)

Stress the second syllable on words ending with -tion (reception) -sion
(expansion) -ic (strategic), or -al (persanal)

Stress the third syllable on words ending with -ee (referee) -eer (pioneer) -ese

Four syllables - Stress can be on the second or third syllable, depending on
how the word ends.

Stress the second syllable on words ending with -cy (transparency), -ty

Stage 4 Evaluation and Making Decision

To communicate clearly when you are speaking in English, it’s important to
stress the correct syllables in each word. This is called word stress, which means
pronouncing one syllable of a multisyllabic word with greater emphasis (stress) than
the other syllables in the word. Here are four general rules to keep in mind about word
stress as you practice pronunciation:

One syllable - Stress the first (and only) syllable.
Examples: dog, cat, day, rain, etc.

Two syllables - Stress the first or second syllable.
Generally, two-syllable nouns, adjectives, and adverbs stress the first syllable,
First syllable examples: happy (HAP-py), little (LIT-tle), and running (RUN-
ning).
while two-syllable verbs stress the second syllable.
Second syllable examples: record (re-CORD), combine (come-BINE), and insist
(in-SIST).

14

Three syllables - Stress can be on the first, second, or third syllable, depending
on how the word ends.

Stress the first syllable on words ending with -er (ballplayer), -or (monitor), -ly
(frequently), or -y (library)

Stress the second syllable on words ending with -tion (reception) -sion
(expansion) -ic (strategic), or -al (persanal)

Stress the third syllable on words ending with -ee (referee) -eer (pioneer) -ese
(legalese), -ette (vinaigrette)

Four syllables - Stress can be on the second or third syllable, depending on
how the word ends.

Stress the second syllable on words ending with -cy (transparency), -ty
(fraternity), -phy (philosophy), -gy (geology), -al (political)

Stress the third syllable on words ending with -tion (constitution), -sion
(apprehension), -ic (supersonic)

Sentence stress occurs when we say certain words more loudly and with more
emphasis than others. In English, we stress content words because they are essential
to the meaning of the sentence. In general, shorter words or words that are clear from
the context don’t get stressed.

Content words include nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Negative words
such as not or never also get stressed because they affect the meaning of the
sentence. Modals, too, can change the meaning of a sentence. Here is a list of words
to stress in an English sentence:

nouns (people, places, things)
Example: The kids are students.

verbs (actions, states)
Example: I am running.

15

adjectives (words that modify nouns)
Example: The dog is cute.

adverbs (words that modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or entire sentences)
Example: She speaks slowly.

negative words (not, never, neither, etc.)
Example: She does not know the answer

modals (should, could, might, etc., but not will or can)
Example: You should go to bed.

yes, no, and auxiliary verbs in short answers (e.g., Yes, she does.)
Example: Yes, she does.

Wh-Question words (what, where, when, why, how, etc.—note that what is often
unstressed when speaking quickly because it’s so common)

Example: What time is it?
