1. (10 p oints) C hoose a concept from C hapter 2 pages 2 3 - 40 “Managing Your T ime” a nd give
a specific example of how y ou c an use t hat c oncept to manage your time a nd r esponsibilities
more e ffectively. One o f t he m ajor d ifferences that I have already f ound b etween h igh s chool
and c ollege is the estimated a mount of of time t hat I will be studying. A nother r esource I never
really u sed i n high s chool w as a c alendar/planner. A fter reading t he t extbook and a ll t he
deadlines i n the s yllabus in a ll m y c lasses, I have the f eeling that I w ill n eed to g o o ut a nd buy
one. I have l earned t hat staying o rganized i n my assignment w ill h elp m e b e successful. By
reading t his c hapter, I h ave also come t o the realization that I really do h ave c omplete control
of m y t ime. I d o i n f act m ake t he c hoice of how m uch t ime I sleep or how m uch time I study,
this i s s omething t hat I n ever m ade a h abit o f in h igh s chool. A nother thing that I n ever r eally
did in high school w as keeping t rack of m y e nergy levels. This i s s omething t hat I would simply
brush o ff in h igh s chool.
2. (10 points) U sing t he information f rom c lass and f rom D 2L d efine the t erm “ emotional
intelligence” i n your o wn words. Review the r esults from y our emotional intelligence
assessment a nd select y our weakest competency/skill. T ell w hat y our goal w ill s et for
yourself in order to strengthen. Explain e xactly w hat s pecific s teps you can t ake i n order t o
strengthen this c ompetency a nd a chieve that goal. (HINT: Look up your notes on SMART
goals.) Explain t horoughly how y our plans are:
Sp ecific
Measurable (How you w ill you know y ou have a chieved y our goal?)
Attainable ( Can you actually a ttain/accomplish this goal?)
Re levant (Does this g oal m ake sense and i s i t something you need to w ork o n?)
and anchored t o a T ime p eriod ( By exactly w hat date w ill you h ave a chieved t his g oal?
Emotional intelligence can b e d efined as t he ability t o r ecognize emotions and a cting upon
them i n a n a ppropriate m anner. SMART s tands f or Specific, M easurable, A chievable, R ealistic
and T ime-Based. S pecific means being d etailed. For example i nstead o f s aying: “I’m going to
be m ore h ealthy.” Think o f i t more a s “ I a m g oing to eat more fruits and vegetables i n my d iet.”
Measurable means y ou a re able t o determine or figure o ut that you have hit your t arget.
Achievable means that i t i s a g oal w ithin reach. I t i s not j ust a v ague dream Realistic stands f or
the p ossibility t o t o the task w ithin a f ixed a mount o f t ime. B ecause come on, y ou obviously
will n ot be able to l ose 2 00 p ounds i n one week. S o i nstead, pace y ourself. Set a r easonable
goal. A nd finally, Time b ased means t he goal i s n ot o pen ended but t here i s a t ime f rame. Like
taking small s teps t o complete your goal by a s et d eadline.
3. (10 p oints) Choose a c oncept f rom Chapter 4 “ Getting the M ost o ut of C lass” a nd describe
how y ou can use that c oncept t o be a more fully e ngaged s tudent. After h aving r ead t his
chapter, I f eel that I h ave g ained v ery useful s trategies f or both n ote-taking, a nd i n class
participation. One o f those s trategies i s a sking question d uring class. “ Most o f t he time t he
questions y ou have are q uestions t hat will h ave the w hole c lass.” (Watts, pg 74) A lot o f t imes
when I g et stuck I t ry t o avoid a sking t he t eacher for h elp. I a m a fraid that t he instructor m ight

see me a s a fool o r a n a nnoying student. This m akes m e realize that I a m not t he o nly one
who has these feelings. M any o f m y classmates, like me, have the s ame q uestion a nd are a
afraid o f rejection. Another h elpful s trategy i s t o t ake g ood notes. “Don’t t ry t o write d own
everything - some f irst- year students t ry t o d o just that. T hey Stop b eing t hinkers a nd b ecome
note t akers.” ( pg.86) T aking n otes I b elieve i s a c rucial p art of the s uccess o f a ny s tudent. This
is why I am starting really focus on t he l ecture and o nly j otting d own t he m ost important p oints.

relationship b etween median w eekly e arnings a nd l evels o f education. D iscuss w hat this
relationship means to y ou as a college student working on y our n ext l evel of e ducation.
My p urpose for attending L one Star College C y Fair is to create a s tarting p oint in furthering
my e ducation. With L one Star C ollege being so c lose t o my home, I a m a ble to keep m y p art-time j ob
and h elp o ut m y f amily. O ne o f tmy o ther purposes for attending Lone S tar is to l earn t o manage my

Career Exploration
After having s pent years o f deciding w hat I w ant to do a s m y career as a kid, I have
finally landed on become a Marketer; Specifically in digital a dvertising and media. One o f t he
big reasons I have d ecided t o pursue t his career i s because b ack in H igh S chool, w hen I was a
member o f the O rchestra I w as e lected as the Langham C reek H igh S chool O rchestra Marketing
Officer. I was i n charge of advertising, m aking poster, flyers, a nd other a nnouncements to our
school f or our e vents. Needless to say w e did h ave a n increased overall amount audience by the
end o f the year a nd I f elt very accomplished. T his i s s omething that I felt v ery proud of and I
enjoy d oing.
One of t he m any reasons w hy I e njoying d oing advertising i s because o f t he c areer my
grandfather h ad. I r emember h e w ould spend hours on t he kitchen t able d rawing and creating
designs that h ad t o catch p eople by t he eye. I t i s something that is simply m agnificent to s ee
something t hat you c reated influence a d esired target and s ee y our p lan actually w ork. A nother
person that i nspired m e t o pursue my Marketing career i s my mom’s friend, Juan. Juan owns a
graphic design shop n ext t o my m om’s b usiness. There, he can d esign t s hirts, f lyers, b anners a nd
posters and s ell h is design to a company o r for a group e vent. Juan has a b een a huge i nspiration
and a friend w hen i t comes to m y d ilemma o f deciding m future c areer. A t hird person whom a

inspired me t hroughout a ll these years to p ush f orward i n my s tudies and p ursue m y c areer.
Given the f act t hat I am t he first generation i n m y family to a ttend college in the United S tates
inspires m e a nd gives m e great a dvice.
My DWYA r esults state that I a m “ Retiring, quiet, friendly, sensitive, kind, a nd m odest
about m y abilities. S hun d isagreements; d o n ot f orce m y opinions o r v alues o n o thers. U sually do
not care to lead but are often l oyal f ollowers. O ften relaxed about getting things d one because I
enjoy the p resent m oment a nd do n ot want t o s poil i t b y u ndue haste o r e xertion.” I find t his t o be
slightly true d ue to t he f act that I d o c onsider myself a q uiet person. I strange a s that m ight
appear, I indeed do not like c onfrontation a nd I avoid conflict. I a lso agree to the f act that I do
not usually consider myself a leader. Now, one o f the q ualities I a m not entirely sure that i s t rue
to me i s t hat I a m a ctually n ot too q uiet. S ure, I l ike to avoid confrontation b ut I a lso l ike
socializing a b it. I enjoy t alking to people and g oing places w ith friends and even m eeting new
friends.
