Ittefaq Silenced
166
On March 25, 1971 the Daily Ittefaq office was bombed and burnt down by the Pakistani army
as a part of Operation Searchlight. The entire press and all the machineries were destroyed.
The Pakistan army occupied the Daily Ittefaq and resumed publishing the paper on May 21,
1971 from the Daily Pakistan Press under Pakistani surveillance.
The Daily Ittefaq resumed publishing under its own control on December 17th, 1971 after
Bangladesh’s victory in the Liberation War.

Victorious:
December, 1971
On December 16, 1971, Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi
and the Pakistani generals stationed in East Pakistan
surrendered to the allied forces of Bangladesh and India.
At the time of their surrender, only a few countries granted
diplomatic recognition to the new nation state of Bangladesh.
As the fight in pursuit of liberation continued, the Daily Ittefaq
persevered; capturing this most brutal chapter in Bangladeshi
history as it unfolded on the front pages.
Ultimately, the coverage culminated in the news of Bangladesh’s
victory.

The Birth of
Bangladesh
In the dawn of a new year, on January 1st, 1972, Awami League
leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected the second Prime
Minister of Bangladesh. Heralded as the father of the nation,
Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was widely regarded as a
war hero - the architect of a young, independent Bangladesh.
Under his leadership, Bangladesh was built on a foundation of
secularism and Bengali nationalism. The constitution, written by
Kamal Hossain in 1972, formed the basis of a liberal, democratic
parliamentary republic, influenced by socialism.
As the new government began to shape the future of this newly
independent nation, their actions were reported in the pages of
the Daily Ittefaq – the primary source of news for the population.
Post-independence, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman conducted his first
official visit as Prime Minister with Indira Gandhi, on February
8 th, 1972. The two leaders met as Indira Gandhi flew from the
capital of New Delhi to greet Bangabandhu at Dumdum Airport in
Calcutta. Gandhi later visited Bangladesh for the first time at the
invitation of Sheikh Mujib, in March 1972. As the two neighboring
countries formally announced their alliance, Suhrawardy Udyan
had waves of people in attendance, bearing witness to the historic
moment.
On that day, the two leaders signed the 25-year Indo-Bangladeshi
Friendship, Cooperation and Peace Agreement. The Daily Ittefaq
was testament to this significant moment between the two nations.
