Mental Health Awareness Month
For 2021’s Mental Health Awareness Month NAMI will continue to
amplify the message of “You Are Not Alone.” We will use this time to
focus on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing
mental health and acknowledging that it’s okay to not be okay through
NAMI’s blog, personal stories, videos, digital toolkits, social media
engagements and national events.
Together, we can realize our shared vision of a nation where anyone
affected by mental illness can get the appropriate support and quality
of care to live healthy, fulfilling lives — a nation where no one feels
alone in their struggle.

Jesus said “Love thy Neighbor” and National Do Something Good for Your
Neighbor Day is celebrated on May 16 to express gratitude to those who are
closest to us. In fact, a neighbor is not merely the person who lives closest to
you but can be anyone with whom you share a kinship. Therefore, your
colleagues, friends, or fellow commuters also qualify as your neighbors! When
we get too caught up in our busy lives, we forget how much fun it is to hang out
with our neighbors and have a good chat with them.
.
May 31, we honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s
a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. The day actually
began as “Decoration Day,” following the Civil War, when mourners placed
flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Yes, Memorial Day
has also come to signify the “unofficial” start of summer, but let’s remember the
heroes who made it all possible.

Juneteenth
The freedom of African Americans from slavery in
the U.S. in 1865 is celebrated on the holiday
Juneteenth on June 19. Juneteenth is made up
of the words ‘June’ and ‘nineteenth,’ and it is on
this day that Major General Gordon Granger
arrived in Texas more than 155 years ago to
inform slaves that slavery had been abolished.
The proclamation declaring the abolishment of
slavery was issued by President Abraham Lincoln
on January 1, 1863, in the nation’s third year of
an ongoing civil war. Known as the Emancipation
Proclamation, it declared that ‘all persons held as
slaves within any State or designated part of a
State […] shall be then, thenceforward, and
forever free.’ Granger’s arrival in Texas was to
enforce this decree, which had originally gone
into effect two years earlier.
The news came as a shock to more than 250,000
slaves in Texas who were unaware of it.
